- BAUER
It is with great sadness that the Bauer Family announces the peaceful passing of our beloved Charles Donald Bauer , at the family farm near Bluffton, Alberta, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at the age of 39 years. Charles was always about the adventure. He loved to spend time with the people he cared about; discovering the backcountry, and encouraging all kinds of shenanigans along the way. Charles loved the great outdoors; whether it was hunting, fishing, or country cruising with his friends… especially when it involved cold beer! He did his best to bury multiple machines in the muskeg; from mud boggin’ in a pickup, to an alleged incident in a D9 Cat. Charles also loved his job at the auction mart, where his favourite assignment was to run the skid-steer. Rumour has it he even frequented the Tim Horton’s drive-thru in the machine! Charles kept his circle small, but cared deeply for those he let in. His caring nature and silly demeanour will live forever in our hearts. Charles will be forever remembered by his devoted parents Donald and Marie; and his loving sister Linda. He will also be remembered by his grandfather Elmer Berg; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; several cherished friends; along with his beloved dog Coco. - ROBICHEAU
Cecelia Sephonia Robicheau (née Patton) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the age of 84 years. Cecelia was born in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to Francis “Frank” and Eleane (née Blair) Patton on September 27, 1939. She was the second child born in the family of seven children. Cecelia was united in marriage to John Benjamin “Ben” Robicheau in 1958. They moved to Red Deer, Alberta, and together raised their three boys. Cecelia joined the Women of the Moose Lodge, Red Deer Chapter 1460 on March 10, 1963. She earned the highest achievement of her College of Regents, as well as her Star Recorder Degree. Cecelia was a very proud 61 year member, being honoured with a lifetime membership. Known for her meticulous work ethic as an executive housekeeper at Michener Centre, in addition to being independently contracted throughout Red Deer, Cecelia was never afraid to get her hands dirty. Quite often she could also be found in her garden tending to her flowers, growing food from the “good, old earth”, and picking berries throughout Central Alberta. She taught others not to waste, as scraps are fertilizer for growth. Cecelia’s most treasured moments were when she was surrounded by her friends and family. She lived for making a connection with others; and she thoroughly loved a good conversation, a chance to share stories, and a tasty cup of tea. A good story was told by a traveller, and travel was something Cecelia also loved to do! She took in the sights of Canada from west to east, never turning down a road trip. Cecelia believed everyone needed culture in their lives. She once said, “If you don’t have the money to travel the world, then learn about it from the people around you.” Cecelia never wanted to forget a moment, a face, a date, or a name; capturing many of those special memories on video or on a notepad. She also adored the Royal Family, and in her downtime when she needed to unwind, you would find her engulfed in a book. Whenever she was faced with adversity, Cecelia would never give up. She was a fighter, as many would know her. She walked through life with the strength of ten men, and was never afraid of a challenge. Yet, under this lion was a gentle cub that always wanted to explore, learn, and grow. Her remarkable footprints will forever be missed. Cecelia is survived by her eldest son John (Debbie) Robicheau; her cherished grandchildren Sarah Robicheau, Amanda (Michael Henry) Robicheau-Henry, Luke Robicheau, and Mathew Robicheau; as well as her treasured great-grandchildren Kayla Robicheau, Jordyn Henry, and James Robicheau. With beautiful memories locked inside our hearts, our family announces the peaceful passing of Darlene L. Irwin of Gilby, Alberta. Darlene passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, April 19, 2024, at the age of 79 years. Darlene was born in Rimbey, Alberta on November 8, 1944, to John and Ruth Balan. Their family farmed in the Willesden Green area northwest of Rimbey. Darlene was the second child of seven children. She attended a local country school, and then lived in Rimbey with various families while completing her high school education. Darlene met her future husband, Albert Irwin, at a local wedding dance when she was fifteen years old. They were married on August 31, 1963, and together made their home and raised their family on the farm that Albert was raised on in the Gilby District. Darlene worked alongside her husband in every aspect of farming; anything from spring seeding, haying, combining, hauling grain, and fencing. She helped build sheds and worked on machinery with Albert. When not busy in the field, there were cows to milk morning and night, pigs to feed, and chickens to raise and butcher. On top of all that, Darlene always planted a big garden. She froze vegetables, canned fruit, and made wonderful jams, relishes, and pickles. Darlene was also a fantastic cook, and could make a meal out of anything. There was always room at the table if someone showed up. Cake and coffee were always ready just in case company came for a visit. Darlene loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with all her heart. She would bake a special cake or treat for the person celebrating their birthday, and always knew their favourite! Darlene also possessed a love of flowers and enjoyed planting and tending to them; and had beautiful flower beds to show for all her hard work. She took great pride in keeping her yard looking neat and tidy. Darlene will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughters Brenda (Jesse) Dial of Rimbey, Jeanette (Kelly) Towle of Rimbey, and Angela (Darren) Lagace of Rocky Mountain House. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren Dustin (Megan) Dial, Casey (Dustin) Lethbridge, Bailey (Paul) Thijssen, Taylor Towle (Everett Bouchard), Spencer Lagace, and Carter Lagace; four precious great-grandchildren Moxon and Brynn Lethbridge, and Mason and Kysen Dial; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family members, and several close friends. And each day He gathers His blossoms. His heavenly home to surround. He gathers a few tiny rose buds, earth’s precious wee babies so sweet. The large buds, earth’s children and teenaged, in heaven to God are a treat. Our adults, His blossoms so radiant. With textures and colours untold. The flowers most full and most open, are earth’s precious aged and old. Its daily He gathers His flowers. He lovingly forms His bouquets. That day, as He gathered His blossoms, your loved one was taken away. But remember the beauty and fragrance; the colours, the petals, the thorns For now in the glory in Heaven, your loved one God’s home does adorn. Cremation Arrangements for the Late Diana Mary B. Douglas “Doug” Bruce Hall of Winfield, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Monday, February 12, 2024, just shy of his 85th birthday. Doug was born in Eckville, Alberta and spent most of his adult life living in Red Deer and working for Canada Post. He moved to Winfield in 1992 after he retired, and was soon joined by his best friend and companion, Annis Bovbjerg, to start building their retirement home together, and settle into their new community. Doug had many hobbies over the years, but his most recent passion was building hot rod cars. He would spend way too many hours at auctions, in car part stores, and scouring everywhere looking for car bits and pieces – that usually sat on the lawn much to Annis’ dismay! Doug would spend hours out in the shop tinkering, fixing, upholstering (with Annis’ help), and painting to create some pretty amazing cars. He was very proud of one car in particular; a 1938 Plymouth, four-door hot rod sedan in fire orange. Doug would take this beauty to parades, local Show and Shine events, and take his family and friends out for a rip. Doug will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughter Kim (Hank) Leonhardt of Victoria, British Columbia; grandsons Eric (Alexandra) Roy of Montreal, Quebec and Joel Roy of Gatineau, Quebec; and great-granddaughter Leia Sandu-Roy; as well as his two stepdaughters Annette (John) Cusworth of Ladner, British Columbia and Rhonda Bovbjerg (Bill) of Langley, British Columbia; and grandchildren Riley Bovbjerg, Caitlin Cusworth (Jesse), and Natasha Cusworth. He will also be deeply missed by many treasured friends, with extra thanks to his friends Albert Brandl, Kevin Johnson, and Judy Pentland who helped Doug so much during his final time. Doug was predeceased by Annis; his parents Gladys and stepfather Lyle Fidler; and his siblings Dean, Alberta, Keith, and Mona. With respect for Doug’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. As Written by Gwen Scheffelmaier Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, and sister Gwendoline “Gwen” Scheffelmaier (née Cole) of Sylvan Lake, Alberta passed away peacefully, with family by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on Monday, February 5, 2024, at the age of 94 years and 3 days. Gwen was born on February 2, 1930 in Coronation, Alberta, the daughter of Glen and Hilda Cole. She attended the Bonny Doone country school to Grade 9, and then obtained her high school education by correspondence courses at her parent’s home. During the teacher shortage, Gwen supervised school for Grades 1 to 9, riding horseback four miles from home. She was married to her school friend and neighbour, Albert Scheffelmaier, on December 29, 1951; and to this union were born two sons Ken and Larry, and a daughter Connie. Gwen enjoyed participating in sports such as ladies softball, playing on the Silver Heights ladies team for many years. She also took up curling when the Brownfield, Alberta rink was built. Gwen worked with the Brownfield Ladies Aid Group that held meetings, strawberry teas, and made quilts. When that group faded, she joined a group that made quilts for the Mustard Seed. Gwen professed her faith in Jesus in her teenage years, teaching Sunday School and helping with Vacation Bible School. Gwen and Albert lived on their farm for over 60 years. She loved gardening, planting trees, and landscaping the yard. She also cherished the coffee times that were spent with neighbours and friends. Gwen took pleasure in playing cards at home, or at the social events held in the Silver Heights and Brownfield areas. She and Albert belonged to the New Dawn Club, where they played various games that usually ended with lunch. They also enjoyed every holiday trip; whether in Alberta, the United States, Jamaica, or Mexico. Gwen and Albert moved to Sylvan Lake in 2011 to join some of their family; where they adapted well, meeting new friends and spending coffee time with them. They also joined the senior’s club in Sylvan Lake and attended the Alliance Community Church, enjoying the fellowship of their friends there. Gwen leaves to mourn, her husband of 72 years, Albert; two sons Ken (Randi) and Larry; and her daughter Connie (Dan); as well as ten grandchildren Andrea (Kelly), Brett (Lisa), Jonathan, Rebekah (Charlie), Stephanie (Rolly), Sasha (Eric), Julia (Matt), David (Anita), Cody (Alicia), and Brandon (Chantell); and seventeen great-grandchildren Kendra, Kyle, Alexis, Brielle, Sophie, Keira, Ezra, Darius, Forest, Arwen, Willamina, Aries, Hunter, Blake, Keaton, Kaden, and Adley. - HARTMAN
With sweet memories we won’t ever forget, our hearts ache as we announce the passing of Shelly-Lynn Hartman of Bluffton, Alberta. Shelly passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the age of 56 years. With the wind blowing through her hair and the sun on her back, Shelly has gone riding… On September 30, 1967, Shelly was born to Floyd and Shirley Hartman. Her arrival in this world was long-awaited, and they were so excited when she finally made her entrance. The young family lived in Calgary for a time, relocating in 1976 to Hoadley, Alberta where they operated the Hoadley General Store. Together with her parents and her brother Kurt, Shelly worked in the store as she grew up. Along the way, Floyd and Shirley purchased the Winfield Shop Right store, where again both kids helped with the day-to-day tasks of that business as well. Shelly attended the Bluffton School, relocating to the Bentley Christian Training Centre to finish her junior high and high school education. She was a very determined and able person, and was very keen to achieve great things. Whatever it was that she wanted to accomplish, she sure did! As a young person, Shelly figure skated at a high level of competition, and taught skating lessons too. She enrolled into a secretarial college in Regina, Saskatchewan, and that started a new adventure of employment opportunities that opened many doors for her. Shelly worked a couple of stints at Circle Square Ranch in Halkirk, Alberta; she worked for a few newspapers, the Rimbey Record and the Ponoka newspaper as a photographer, reporter, and a typesetter; and she also worked at the Sundre Round-up paper as a typesetter as well. The girl could certainly proofread and type! Shelly was always looking for any new opportunities, and she absolutely loved to learn. This desire then sent her to Red Deer College, where she took courses as an educational assistant. Returning back home, Shelly worked at the Bluffton School for a while, and it was during this time that she married and moved to Stettler, where her son Jackson was born. Her aspirations to move forward in life enabled her to later return to Red Deer College to upgrade her studies in the line of social work. Shelly further excelled in this endeavour, and took the bold step of moving with Jackson to Drumheller where she could perform her duties in the field of social work. Shelly then received an opportunity to further advance her education again, registering in many additional courses that would eventually gain employment as a probation officer. This was truly Shelly’s passion. Together with her son they embarked on a new journey, moving to Edson where she served in Alberta’s correctional services for several years. As a probation officer, this was Shelly’s life’s work. She found fulfillment in the profession, and she was good at it. There were a couple of “near misses” that almost took her life, but that did not deter her. She was an independent woman, and she loved that attribute in herself. As a mother, Shelly absolutely loved following Jackson around with all of his extra-curricular activities, especially when pursuing his passion for basketball. She treasured having a house full of his friends, particularly when there was always a dinner table full of boys. Shelly loved every second of being a great mom. Shelly was also an avid traveller, and loved to venture on trips – some destinations that were planned – and others where she was just “winging it”! When Shelly’s mom passed away, they returned to Red Deer where she finished up her work for the government, and retired from the profession she always took the greatest pride in. From time-to-time Shelly would bring out “the badge”… and what a smile that would give her! Upon her retirement, Shelly moved back to Bluffton where she found a new passion, her Spyder! She purchased it outright after consulting with her brother and doing tons of research online. She even took a course in Red Deer to become a full-fledged, and fully-licensed rider. Shelly fell in love with letting the wind blow her hair back. Donning black leathers and a purple dew-rag, with a phone full of her favourite Post Malone rap music, “Shel Storm” was reborn. She travelled with her friends, Kim, Jodi, and Kristen, and nothing could stop her! She loved her ride and loved hitting the open road, even if it was simply going to Bluffton for the mail! She always joined in on family rides, and was thrilled to take her dad on Father’s Day for a “little rip”. Shelly was so happy to transport her passengers whenever it was needed, but mostly, her little niece Meg was her constant companion. Shelly had every reason to be proud of herself. This little baby girl that struggled her whole life with illness, accomplished many things in her short lifetime. She became a mentor and a force to be reckoned with. Shelly will be forever remembered and sorely missed by many. May she eternally rest in peace. “We love you, “Shel Storm # 4”! Shelly leaves behind her loving son Jackson Alm of Red Deer; her brother Kurt (Kim) Hartman of Bluffton; and her father Floyd (Judy) Hartman of Bluffton. She also leaves behind her niece, Kristen (Derek) Gully of Rimbey; her nephew John (Brandy) Hartman of Bluffton; as well as her great-nieces and great-nephews Nathan, Rebecca, Jordyn, Megan, and Cora; in addition to many additional family members and countless treasured friends. Shelly was predeceased by her mother Shirley in 2018. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Shelly’s Life will be held at the Hoadley Community Hall on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., with Kim Hartman hosting. Shelly will be laid to rest, together with her mother Shirley, in the Hoadley Cemetery at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in her memory may be made directly to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, #600, 3250 Bloor Street West, East Tower, Toronto, Ontario M8X 2X9 (www.cpff.ca). With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Yvonne Evelyn Watts of Rimbey, Alberta. Yvonne experienced a decline in her health in recent weeks, quietly passing away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, November 3, 2023, at the age of 89 years. Yvonne was born in Kelso, Saskatchewan on June 7, 1934, to Albert and Florence Pierlot. She was the third child of eight children raised on a pioneer farm through the Depression years. Yvonne’s family worked hard and continually aspired for a better life, eventually relocating and settling in Rimbey across the road from the Watts farm. Upon graduating high school in Rimbey, her plans of attending pharmacy school were soon derailed with the meeting of the love of her life, Bruce Watts. They were united in marriage shortly after on November 11, 1953. Yvonne and Bruce began a family and a farm. Together they raised their four children to understand the value of hard work, and the importance of a life full of experiences. Horsemanship, skiing, and enjoying the great outdoors of Alberta and British Columbia were their rewards. Sadly, Yvonne lost Bruce at a very young age, but through stoic vitality and perseverance she continued on. She raised their children with good sense and strength, and maintained the family farm for the rest of her life. Family, friends, her church, and the community were the cornerstones of life for Yvonne. She possessed a sense of duty and felt sincere enjoyment in helping others; volunteering was in her DNA. The United Church, Meals on Wheels, and checking in on countless friends and family filled her days. She will be missed by many. Yvonne is survived by her children LeeAnne (Tim), Collin (Nita), Lyle, and Cherie; her grandchildren Marnie (Keith), Sheleen, Michael (Suzanne), Remi (Alexis), Reed (Shenelle), Tommi (James), Lazlo, Liam, Hanna, and Robert; in addition to her great-grandchildren Evie, Holden, Emma, Katie, as well as a baby boy, and a baby girl. Betty was born on the Door Key Ranch near Fort Macleod, Alberta on September 21, 1932 to Jim and Mary McNab. She had many happy memories growing up in the family of nine children. At a young age, Betty developed a love for the outdoors – and horses – as she worked alongside her dad. She carried that passion forward throughout her life. When Betty was a young woman she loved to dance, and that is where she met the love of her life, Gordon "Demps" Gregory, a young Air Force officer. With the heaviest hearts we announce the sudden passing of Mark Joseph Laczo of Bluffton, Alberta on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the age of 55 years. Mark was born on February 16, 1968, to Rosemarie and Dale Laczo in Rimbey, Alberta. He spent most of his life in Bluffton; a life that was a testament to his passion for farming, and an unwavering love for trucks, race cars, and his family. From the earliest age, Mark could be found on the farm, riding his motorbike and 4x4ing down at the river, and in any mud pit he could find. Mark worked as a directional driller on the oil rigs for many years, where he enjoyed his work and made many lifelong friends, all while still running his farm with the intention of returning to farming full time. Yet it was his enthusiasm for big tractors and farm equipment, big trucks and race cars that truly defined his character. Mark spent countless hours at Central Alberta Raceways, where he was the go-to guy for the racetrack for many years. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and his presence and spirit will be dearly missed by everyone in the community that he served with love and dedication. Beyond his passion for farming and racing, Mark was a devoted husband and loving father to Jessi, who was the light of his life, and with whom he spent many afternoons on various adventures around the farm. Mark will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 26 years, Donna; his daughter Jessi; parents Rosemarie and Dale; and his sisters Angela (Neil) of Hussar, Alberta; and Roxanne of Austin, Texas. - LUNDSTROM
Surrounded by family, Clair Ellis Lundstrom of Rimbey, Alberta took his last breath on Monday, January 1, 2024, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 86 years. Clair was born on March 1, 1937, in Rimbey, Alberta to Sven and Greta (née Norstrom) Lundstrom. He started his schooling in a one-room schoolhouse at Harmonien, and then attended Grade 11 in Bluffton before graduating high school in Rimbey. Following graduation, Clair joined his father Sven on the family farm east of Hoadley. Together, Sven and Clair raised Hereford cattle and in later years they started to sell more grain. Early in his farming career, Clair would venture to the Bluffton Creamery to pick up the milk cheque, and it was there that he met a bubbly blonde, Agnes Straarup. They were united in marriage on June 29, 1960. Agnes and Clair raised two daughters; with Candis arriving in 1966, and in 1968 Tanya followed to make the family complete. Clair was a kind, patient, and compassionate man, especially when it came to his animals. There were several times when his daughters would get home from school and they would find their dad in the barn. Clair would be found with a labouring cow’s head on his lap, and he would be stroking her head and telling her that everything was going to be fine. When the cattle were ready to be shipped to the auction mart, Clair could pretty much load the truck by himself. He would round up the cows and walk them down to the loading chute – he would never run his cattle. There was one autumn when they had sold their cattle to a buyer in eastern Canada. The train that was transporting the cattle to Ontario had derailed, killing most of the cattle. Clair was upset about that for months. He also had a soft spot for the family’s pets. On one excursion to the vet in Rimbey, the family’s yellow lab, Max, got extra snuggles from Clair. Since Max had never ridden in the front of the truck, and certainly had never been to town, with every passing mile he scooted closer on the seat towards Clair. Then with every passing vehicle he would bark directly into Clair’s ear. Upon arrival at the vet’s office, Clair said his right leg had fallen asleep from the weight of the dog cuddling on his thigh… and he could definitely hardly hear out of his right ear! But he did say that Max was very happy and popular at the vet’s office! Both Clair and Agnes were very active in the community. While Agnes tended to her activities with the Liberty Hall, the Springdale Ladies Club, and the Bluffton Parent/Teacher Association; Clair was not far behind her being “volun-told” to paint, clean, or repair something! Of which he didn’t mind a bit! At the beginning of July every year, the family would go camping and hiking to British Columbia, mostly in the Yoho National Park area. Clair would pick river rocks and driftwood for hours. In the winter months, several families in the community would rent the pool in Ponoka, and they would all go swimming. Clair was also an avid ice fisherman, and he would keep Agnes busy pickling fish. He did not eat pickled fish, but he liked to think Agnes enjoyed pickling them! One winter day when Clair and Agnes were out feeding the cattle, Agnes was chased onto the hay wagon by an angry cow. Three weeks later they ate that cow. Like a true Alberta beef farmer, Clair loved his steak and potatoes! As the girls left home and life became less hectic, Clair and Agnes took up golfing. Most often they could be found at the golf course in Breton, and they loved to share their golf stories with their family. While Agnes was curling in the winter, Clair was more than pleased to become the “official, unofficial coach”! Clair was completely in love with his grandchildren, and over the years he was their proudest spectator as he attended hockey games, baseball games, dance recitals, band performances, and cadet parades. He took the greatest pleasure in attending birthday parties, graduations, and most recently, the wedding of his granddaughter. He even attended the playschool’s, “Spring Fling”, to which he exclaimed he might never make that mistake again! Clair adored his grandchildren, loved listening to stories about the great-grandchildren, and he was so proud of them all! Our lives go on without you, but nothing is the same. We have to hide our heartache, when someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that loved you, silent are the tears that fall. Living here without you, is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, your heart was kind and true. And when we needed someone, we could always count on you. The special years will not return, when we are all together. But with the love in our hearts, you walk with us forever. Clair is survived by his daughters Candis (Richard) Edwards of Red Deer; and Tanya Lundstrom of Sylvan Lake; as well as four cherished grandchildren Jessa (Chris) Wilkinson; Kimberley (Dustin) Patapoff; Scott (Danika) Morse; and Carter Taylor; and three precious great-grandchildren Layne, Blake, and Ryder. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Kenny (Lucille) Straarup of Calgary; a nephew Gary (Teresa) Barr of Edmonton; and close family friend Susan Grieshaber-Otto of Hoadley; in addition to many close cousins, nieces and nephews, and dear friends. - SKEELS
With broken hearts the family of Delmer Skeels was left to say goodbye, upon his unexpected and sudden passing at home on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the age of 86 years. Delmer was born in the Bentley General Hospital on June 30, 1937, to his parents Lester and Alda Skeels. He was brought home to the farm where he resided for the next 86 years. As a youngster, Delmer enjoyed life on the farm with his parents and siblings Louise, Gerald, and Thelma. He always had a variety of animals to care for and nurture. Delmer attended school to Grade 8 at the Monte Vista School, riding to and from class on horseback. His education was complicated by health problems and hearing loss. As a young man – along with farming – Delmer did some carpentry work with his uncle Harold and Harold’s sons. In addition, he broke numerous horses to ride, and milked a countless number of cows. Delmer switched wells at the Rimbey Gas Plant for a while, and he loved dancing – privileged to be the best man at six weddings! In 1963 Delmer married Joyce Holosko and they moved about 200 feet into their new home. They continued to dairy farm with Lester and Alda until 1970; venturing into beef cows, transplant heifers, feed horses, as well as developing a fine herd of commercial Simmental-Limousin cross cattle. Delmer enjoyed participating in amateur rodeo, and served on the Rimbey Rodeo Board for 20 years. He also fulfilled roles with the Rimbey Agricultural Society and the Alberta Range Patrol program. As a family they were actively involved with the Bluffton 4H Beef Club, with Delmer spending some time as both an assistant and as the club leader. The Skeels Family was acknowledged with the Ponoka County Farm Family honour in 1987. As a young family, they enjoyed many memorable times with very good friends, the Riley family. They also enjoyed more than 20 years of trail riding in the mountains with family and friends, particularly the Muller and Jaburek crews; and they are fondly remembered working cattle with special neighbours Bob and Donna Pecharsky. Delmer even had a dandy fish pond built in the pasture to enjoy with his family – especially the grandkids! In 2007 Delmer semi-retired and sold most of the herd; blending the few remaining cattle with Dan’s herd, and he continued winter feeding right up until this year. He has always enjoyed staying active on the farm. Delmer and Joyce continued haying right into this year – in fact, he was hauling bales in October! Well into his 80s, on Delmer’s bucket list was a bigger “manure spreader” – of which he finally got! In June of this year, the Skeels family was recognized as a long-standing pioneer family of the Rimbey area at the annual Oldtimers Reunion. In later years, Delmer and Joyce were fortunate enough to take pleasure in many bus trips across Canada and the U.S.A.; creating many memories and friendships along the way. Their recent favourite pastimes included eradicating gophers; and road trips out west looking for wild horses, which they did just four days prior to Delmer’s passing. “He was a farmer, hardworking – straightforward – social and caring… Delmer will be missed, but his memory will live on.” Delmer is survived by his loving wife and partner of 60 years, Joyce; his sons Stan (Vykki), Wes (Leslie), and Dan (Karen); as well as his grandchildren Mackenzie (Corey), Garren (Trinity), Kesler (Korah), Tyler, Jodi, Chelsea and her son Keaton, and Jessie. He is also survived by his sister Louise Sanderson; his brother Gerald (May) Skeels; in addition to numerous additional family members; and many close and dear friends. Special mention to Rick and Evelyn Sanderson for allowing Delmer and Joyce to use their children Crystal, Kim, and Tony as practice grandkids; and also to honorary grandson Gary Waldron. Delmer was predeceased by his parents; his sister Thelma Galisky; along with many special aunts, uncles, other relatives, and good friends. With respect for Delmer’s wishes, an Informal Memorial Gathering will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, 5109 – 54 Avenue, Rimbey on Sunday, November 19, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If desired, memorial donations in Delmer’s memory may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance, Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 (www.stars.ca); or to the charity of one’s choice. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Shirley Alice Ford, of Rimbey, Alberta, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care, at the age of 87 years. Shirley was comforted by her daughters at her side, passing away surrounded by love on Thursday, October 19, 2023. Shirley was born in Haliburton, Ontario on June 9, 1936. She was the first of twelve children born to Norman and Lenita Hirons. As a young woman, Shirley met Gerald Tustian at the race track in Fort Erie, Ontario, where Shirley was a cook and Gerald was a jockey. They were united in marriage and moved to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan where they lived in a little cabin that had no power or water. Through the course of several years, they raised three daughters Joanne, Lynita, and Sandra. The family relocated to Cochrane, Alberta, where they resided for many years before selling their acreage there and moving to an acreage at Rimbey. After 21 years of marriage, Shirley and Gerald separated. Shirley later married Tom Ford of Rimbey, and after quite a few years they also separated. Eventually Shirley and Gerald found their way back to each other, and they moved to their daughter and son-in-law’s farm near Rimbey. It was during this time that Shirley endured a bad stroke, but was able to go back home following her rehabilitation. Sadly, Gerald suffered a heart attack shortly after that, so Shirley then went to live with her daughter Joanne for many years. Shirley subsequently relocated to the Winfield Seniors Lodge where she was a resident for a time before moving into Rimbey Long Term Care where she resided until her passing. Shirley had many friends and possessed an amazing sense of humour. She absolutely loved her old cat, Booties, who was her cherished furry companion. Shirley is survived by her two daughters Joanne (Cliff) Reynolds; and Lynita (Roy) Stevenson; as well as four brothers Dale (Peggy), Garry, Terry (Lou Anne), and Bobbie (Debbie); four sisters Donna (Jon), Norma (Rick), Sandy (Bill), and Cindy (Jim); in addition to numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.
