She is also survived by Mathew Kreil and Shannon Leepart; one sister Katy of Medicine Hat; two of Rolly’s siblings Ralph (Dorothy) Kreil of Ponoka and June Mitzel of Foremost, Alberta; and her sister-in-law Carol Kreil of Rocky Mountain House. - ZELASEK
For those who wish to view the live-stream of Garry's Memorial Service, please visit the following link: https://teams.live.com/meet/9321961218299 With aching hearts and intense sadness we announce the passing of Garry William Zelasek of Morningside, Alberta. Garry passed away peacefully, in the loving arms of his wife Michelle, on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at the age of 56 years. Garry was born in Rimbey, Alberta on January 18, 1967, to Harvey and Sharon Zelasek, the eldest child and a brother to Greg and Michelle. Growing up, Garry and Greg were not only brothers, but were the best of friends. They spent time doing many things together: motorbiking, skidooing, fishing, hunting, and camping – just to mention a few. However, Garry always said the best times they had were when they went down to the river valley. Garry was a very competitive athlete and participated in many sports. He enjoyed an array of school sports, as well as golfing, slow pitch, and – of course – his passion for hockey! Garry played hockey all through his childhood, up to and including his time playing Junior B hockey for the Rimbey West Stars, and finishing in more recent years with the Senior Men’s League. He absolutely loved hockey; especially when cheering for his favourite team, the Edmonton Oilers, and when engaging in a fun rivalry with Greg, who is a Flames fan. For a couple of years, Garry was also an outrider on the chuckwagon racing circuit – racing for his chosen second family, the Mayans. Throughout his career, Garry was employed for various companies. He enjoyed his employment with the Rimbey Co-op, All Structures, Teak Oilfield, PCS, NAL, and lastly, for Tamarack. It did not matter what job Garry had, he always worked hard and was a great co-worker. He continuously said that he loved his job – and he really meant it! In 1990 Garry married his high school sweetheart Michelle Bushey, and shortly thereafter they were blessed with three boys Justin, Lance, and Nathan. He was very proud of his boys. Garry loved to tease them and make them laugh – and, oh boy, that laugh of his was contagious! Garry was the happiest when he was outside with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, playing with his granddaughters, or being competitive in any type of family game. In December of 2020, Garry was diagnosed with ALS. Even when he received this devastating news, he never let this horrific disease define who he was. Garry always had a smile on his face, a joke to tell, a poke to give, and a laugh beyond measure. He was the first person in Canada with ALS to volunteer for the Capture ALS Study – a study that is trying to find a cure by taking spinal fluid for research. Garry’s doctor told him that he was the pioneer for this project, and that his number would be, like, 000001! Garry just laughed! He never hesitated when they asked if he was interested in participating in a research study, he just responded with a “yes”! His thoughts were: “I might not find a cure for me, but maybe it could help someone else with a cure, or at least give them a longer life with a slower progression.” Garry was very selfless when it came to the ALS studies, and he was participating in as many as he could. Then he suffered a fall in 2022, and endured a brain bleed that needed to be operated on. After this unfortunate fall, Garry was no longer allowed to participate in the studies because they did not know if his progression was because of ALS, or due to complications of his fall. Garry was distressed that he could not continue with the research; however, even with all of the setbacks and his terminal diagnosis, he still maintained an optimistic view on life and never once did he say, “Why me?” Garry is survived by his ever-loving wife and best friend of almost 33 years, Michelle; and his sons Justin, Lance (Braelyn), and Nathan (Shelby); as well as five cherished granddaughters Scarlett, Harper, Sarah, Esmé, and Sophia – whom Garry loved beyond measure. Those little girls made him laugh so much, especially when they would rip off his slippers and tickle his feet! He is also survived by his mother Sharon (Johnny) Nobel; his brother Greg (Susan) Zelasek; and his sisters-in-law Melody (Bob) Hansen, and Myla (Brian) Hansen; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and many great friends. Garry was predeceased by his father Harvey; his sister Michelle; parents-in-law Wilfred and Amy Bushey; his sister-in-law Sharon Bushey; brother-in-law David Bushey; and his sister- and brother-in-law Winnie and Gene Norstrom. A public Memorial Service in Celebration of Garry’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Garry’s memory may be made directly to the ALS Society of Alberta, 7874 – 10 Street NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8W1 (www.alsab.ca). - DITTRICK
With deep sadness and unending love we announce the passing of Wayne Kenneth Dittrick of Rimbey, Alberta. Wayne passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the age of 71 years. Wayne was born on February 26, 1952, in St. Catharines, Ontario to Mac and Joan Dittrick. He was the eldest of four children: Wayne, David, Delena, and Robert. Wayne had an adventurous childhood growing up on the Niagara Escarpment. The family spent lots of time camping and fishing. He talked of occasions catching eels and snapping turtles. Wayne and his brother David had many good times together exploring wooded areas around their home. At the age of 22 years, Wayne joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He, kind of, informally met his future wife Joan during basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, by accidently kicking a soccer ball in her face! After basic training, Wayne was transferred to Borden, Ontario for his trades training. He went through Borden at the same time as Joan, as they were in the same trade. After graduating the Air Frame Technician course, Wayne did not get any of his posting preference requests of Ottawa, North Bay, or Trenton. Instead he got posted to Cold Lake, Alberta, which a month later is where Joan got posted to. Fate ensured they found each other again, they started dating, and – well, the rest is history! Wayne and Joan were married in November, 1975. They spent 14 years in Cold Lake where Wayne was involved in Scouting, fishing, bird hunting, camping, and boating. Afterward, Wayne and his family received a posting to Trenton. He was assigned the task of setting up the inside of 707s to please Brian Mulroney’s lovely wife Mila. It was not a pleasant task! The family then spent nine months in Borden before Wayne obtained his discharge and they moved back to Alberta, settling in Sherwood Park. Their final move was to Rimbey, where Wayne and Joan were active members of the Rimbey Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as the Rimbey Fish and Game Association. Wayne continued to enjoy camping and fishing until the last year before his passing. Wayne leaves behind his loving wife Joan; one son Justin (Leanne) Dittrick and their family Trinity, Tyler, Sam, and Hudson; and one daughter Shawna (Matthew) Wecker and their family Jesse, Layne, Rylan, and Kacey. He also leaves behind his mother Joan Dittrick of Thorold, Ontario; two brothers David (Donna), and Robert (Angie); and one sister Delena (Peter), and their families. Wayne was predeceased by his father Mac in 2020. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Wayne’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Al Lewis officiating. Wayne was laid to rest in the Glenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Sherwood Park at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and NWT, #306, 10430 – 61 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T6H 2J3 (www.alzheimer.ca). While living and working in Virden, she met Danny Kurtz and they were married in 1955. During that union they welcomed two daughters Debra Jean in 1961, and Karen Michelle in 1962. Joyce and Danny were divorced in 1972. Joyce then met the love of her life, Leonard “Abe” Bennefield, and they were married in 1975. Sadly, Abe passed away in 1976 from cancer. Joyce was broken, but stayed strong to raise her two daughters. On January 23, 1983 she was united in marriage to Albert “Bert” MacKinnon. They farmed near Bentley, where Joyce loved the farming life and was a great farm wife. Bert passed away in 1996. After twelve years, Joyce sold the acreage and moved into a condominium in Bentley. It took her some time to readjust to town life again; however, Joyce loved her condo and resided there for ten years before selling it and moving in with her daughter and son-in-law. In her lifetime, Joyce never spent one day in the hospital. She was always extremely grateful for a long and healthy life, but the last 17 days proved to be too big of a fight for her. “You put up a good fight, Mom, and we are all very proud of you. You are missed dearly and will never be forgotten. We love you.” Joyce will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughters Debbie Jahraus (Greg) of Leslieville; and Karen Metro (Dave “Red”) of Bentley; as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Cody (Trisha) and their daughter Harper of Bentley; Krista (Mark) also of Bentley; Lacey (Brent) and their family Brayden and Brody of Drayton Valley; and Jace (Brianna) of Australia. She will also be lovingly remembered by her siblings: Doreen of Regina, Saskatchewan; Bob (Maureen) of Camrose, Jean of Whitehorse, Yukon; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. Joyce was predeceased by her parents; and her husbands Abe and Bert. A Graveside Service in Celebration of Joyce’s life was held in the spring at the Vig Cemetery, Bentley on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. If friends desire, memorial tributes in her memory may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 (www.stars.ca). “The Lord spoke to the heavy hearts that stood with hats in hand, 'Your sadness pains me deeply and I know you'll miss this man.'” - Baxter Black With immense heartache we share that John Rance Curtis of Hoadley, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the age of 69 years. John experienced an accident with his tractor in January and endured a lot of broken bones. He put up a good fight, but his kind and loving heart wore out. John was born on August 28, 1953 in Red Deer, Alberta. He was the eldest of nine children born to Rance and Inez Curtis. John met the love of his life, Susan Tregunna, at a Saddle Club dance in Mount Forest, Ontario. They were married and their first child, Brenda, was born in Mount Forest. Their adventures out west began shortly after. The young family settled down in Hoadley, Alberta and their second child, Robert, was born in Rimbey. John then accepted a job at Burns Ranches in Calgary where they lived for a while, and where their third child, Derek, was born. In 1977 they relocated to Big Valley and John worked for Brian and Ione Butterfield. The family then moved again in 1992 to the Santee's Farm north of Crestomere, returning to Hoadley in 1994 where John took over the family farm and they would stay. Family was very important to John. He was extremely proud of his children, and he treasured any time spent with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was filled with pride to have both of his great-grandsons named after him in the last year. John also loved hunting, fishing, ranching, golfing, and rodeoing. In 2000 he embarked on another adventure that he adored, which was driving school bus. He loved the kids and the kids loved him! He also participated in a few bus rodeos, teaching some of the other drivers how to accomplish some of the obstacles. John was also the president of the Hoadley Hall Board and of the Hoadley Cemetery. As well, he served on the board of the Lacombe Feeders Association. In his lifetime, there were many things John was "always" known for. He was always ready to help whoever needed it, and he always included everyone so no one felt left out. And John also always had time for a visit - which is why he was "always" late! John will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Rest high on that mountain, cowboy. Your work on earth is done. John will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, Susan; his children Brenda Smawley (Lorne Wheeler) of Pigeon Lake; Robert (Charlotte) Curtis of Donalda; and Derek Curtis (Cheryl Frank) of Ponoka; as well as his grandchildren Darien (Madi), Jenna (Wyatt), Meghann (Cody), Ben (Roisin), Jed (Jesse), Jake, Rex, and Camryn; and his precious great-grandchildren Seara, Rylee, Easton, and Owen. He will also be forever remembered by his siblings Wilfred (JoAnne) Curtis, Alberta Kitchen (Rod Sawley), George (Dawne) Curtis, Marlene (Bruce) Phillips, Jenny (Richard) Parker, Colleen Pittman, Ken (Wendy) Curtis, and Sheila (Randy) Warner; in addition to many nieces, nephews, other special family members, and countless treasured friends. John was predeceased by his mum and dad Inez and Rance; a nephew Kevin; brother-in-law Kelly; and two nieces Kim and Jessica. A Memorial Service was celebrated in John's Honour at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Father Les Drewicki officiating. With sadness we announce that Charlesena "Charlie" M. Nachtegaele of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the age of 93 years. Charlie was born and raised in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. She began nursing training at the Saskatchewan Psychiatric Hospital, but did not complete her training after she married Victor Nachtegaele in 1949. They purchased a farm east of North Battleford and raised a family of three children Peggy, Larry, and Sheila. In 1963, between Christmas and the New Year, the family relocated to Bluffton, Alberta where they rented a small house for six months before purchasing a farm northwest of Bluffton. Over the years, both Charlie and Vic were active members of the Blindman River Hall and the Royal Canadian Legion in Bluffton. Charlie became a 4-H leader as well, and started a 4-H Sewing Club along with the co-leader Marge Brown. After their children moved out of the house and on their own paths, Charlie worked for a time in retail at the Robinson's store. In 1972 Charlie and Vic became foster parents, and three boys Erwin, Malcolm, and Trevor joined the family and came to stay with them. Before and after the family's journey to Africa, Charlie also enjoyed being a judge for sewing, knitting, and other handicrafts at many of the local fairs. Vic accepted a job in Tanzania, Africa as a field and crop supervisor and shop mechanic with the Canadian Industrial Development Association, together with NAFCO (National Food and Agriculture Corporation), to help grow grain atop the great rift wall. In 1978 the family packed their bags, and Charlie, Vic, Erwin, Malcolm, and Trevor moved to Tanzania. The boys were enrolled at an international school in Arusha, and Charlie learned that cooking meals there were back to the basics. Shopping for groceries was very different as there were no convenience foods available and many items were not always accessible. After three years, they relocated to Sudan for the same type of project for another two years. The boys then attended the international school in Thika, Kenya. They enjoyed many holidays to Dar es Salaam, the Seychelles Islands, and all the nearby parks. Upon returning to Canada and after the boys had graduated, Charlie and Vic sold the farm and moved to their property in Buck Lake. They had a lot of fun joining the Buck Lake seniors in holiday trailer convoys, and fall campouts at the Buck Lake Hall that were complete with an annual play and lots of games. Charlie was a busy lady that was always sewing or crafting, and she enjoyed belonging to many groups. She will be fondly remembered for spurring on lots of good laughs, as well as her keen ability to play a mean game of crib! Charlie will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her two daughters Peggy Mueller of Langley, B.C.; and Sheila (Rob) Budd of Bluffton; her foster son Malcolm Peigan of Edmonton; as well as eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; other family members; and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Victor in 2013; her son Larry; two foster sons Erwin and Trevor Peigan; son-in-law Norman Mueller; two sisters Shirley Kulyk and Vida Brunwald; and her brother-in-law Steve Kulyk. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. Service and Burial Arrangements for the Late Arthur Louis Schell entrusted to the care of The Life of Art Schell Art was born in Maryhill, Ontario and grew up on the family farm milking cows, doing chores, and working with and riding horses. He had five siblings that he played, worked, had fun, and fought with. Art attended Maryhill Separate School until age 14, after which he went back to help his dad on the farm. When he was 18 years old, Art and his cousin Gerry Kurtz decided to go west where they worked on farms and at the Blue Ridge Sawmill. They created memories that Art talked about right up until his passing. After a year they went back home to Maryhill, and Art helped his dad on the farm until he was called upon by his former employer to return to Alberta. When he came home again the following spring, Art met a young lady from Kitchener, Ontario by the name of Jean Metzloff. He chased her until she caught him! Two years later, in 1953, they got married and moved to Alberta. They worked on a farm near Calgary, but when Linda entered the world they moved to a farm near Rimbey, in search of one in the area to serve as a permanent home. They eventually settled on the location east of town. Art had no trouble befriending the neighbours, and they took turns trading labour and machinery. He spent many hours cleaning and repairing borrowed equipment. A few bad years left them destitute. Art was offered a personal loan from a wealthy individual, but with high odds of foreclosure he politely declined and went humbly into the bank and asked for help. The bank manager told him, "Don't you dare give up now", and saw him through the darkest times. They never saw a Christmas with no gifts. The family eventually grew to six kids, and the house began to shrink! Jean already had a floor plan ready, and in 1967 Art and Grampa built a new house - where Bill and Alma now reside. Art and Jean farmed another 33 years before moving into town. Once living in Rimbey, Art enjoyed volunteering at the local truck museum, and he was very proud of his service and membership in the Rimbey Knights of Columbus. For at least 30 years he also never missed an opportunity to donate blood, gaining special recognition from the Red Cross. Dad's Legacy The life skills that dad taught us were well beyond the confines of formal education. He instilled morals, values, and integrity; a handshake was a sealed deal. He maintained that, "If a man's word is no good, he's no good", "No lie can make the truth go away", and "You'll never be perfect; just do your best and nobody can ask for anything more." His wealth was his family. Dad despised laziness, deceit, greed, dishonesty, and arrogance, but he always took the high road when someone shafted him. Although Dad got really cranky if you didn't hold the flashlight just right, or if the truck didn't get back to the combine before the hopper was full, he had no problem shutting down the whole operation to go donate his rare AB negative blood ... "Because somebody might need it!" Dad would sacrifice anything for his family. The trust and good terms which he cultivated was exemplified when Kathy's husband passed away in BC. Dad dropped all of his harvesting to be a support to her, and the neighbours finished his harvesting for him in his absence. He was very fond of most animals, although he had to rename of his cows after five-year-old Linda recited their names in Show and Tell! Dad delighted in problem solving, inventing, and creating things; whether it be something for Mom, new contraptions to make farming easier - such as a wagon to stack round bales before such a thing was available - or something for his kids. He would pull a few pieces of wood or steel out of the scrap pile and disappear into the shop. As I say this I can still hear the hacksaw, welder, grinder, and his homemade drill press. He would emerge a few hours later with a new doll house, toy barn, bird feeder - complete with stand, or a perfectly-fitted bicycle hitch and trailer for his kids to collect bottles. He made those guys on Junkyard Wars look pretty lame. He loved tractors, reading, dancing, debating political issues, and A&W onion rings. At one point, a large portion of pasture and a quarter mile of fence became submerged in water due to an enormous beaver dam. As a well-taught problem solver, Bill procured some dynamite and blew the dam halfway to Mars, draining the small lake in a matter of minutes. The next day we learned how to own a mistake, as Dad went straight to the neighbour to clear the air over a flooded hay crop. The farm was his career, passion, his hobbies, and his life. Dad was elated when Bill chose to take up the traces on the family farm, and he loved to hear how things were going out there, never hesitating to offer his opinion on how things should be done. A couple of years ago, Linda's husband Brad gave Dad a ride all around the farm in his helicopter. Dad would still be talking about that if he didn't have to leave us ... Here's to our good ol' Dad, Who always gave it all he had. Many years of selfless toil, Nurturing that rich Alberta soil. Good ol' Dad was always there, To show us what's right, and what is fair. You're never stuck, he would proclaim, That giving up was pretty lame. There's always a way, and he'd show us how, To fix what's broken, or catch a cow. He made sure we could help ourselves, To navigate problems, or build some shelves. Perfect he never claimed to be, But Dad cheating others, we'd never see. Dad has certainly done his part, Each one of his kids, is a work of Art.
- FODOR
Otto Dan Fodor of Bluffton, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Otto was born on October 15, 1934 to Mike and Helen Fodor on the farm by Warburg, Alberta. He was the fourth of five children. Otto attended Rainier School until Grade 8, and then continued to help on the farm. When he was 21 years old, he left home to go to work. Otto worked at a sawmill and on the oil rigs before finally finding a job with the Department of Highways building bridges for nine years. While working on a bridge by Donalda, Alberta, he met the love of his life, Vivian Rider, at a community dance and they were married six months later. They had two sons while travelling with the bridge crew and living in a 20-foot holiday trailer. In 1963, Otto and Vivian bought a farm north of Bluffton, and they built a house where their third son and first daughter were born. They had a mixed farm with dairy, beef, pigs, and grain. He was very proud of growing seed oats that he sold to many people. Otto and Vivian built a new house in 1968 with the help of good neighbours, and their final daughter was born there. Since Otto married a woman who lived by a lake, he learned that fishing was really fun! He enjoyed fishing from a boat even though he couldn’t swim, and liked fishing much better on the ice. Otto also loved auction and garage sales, and was known to find a lot of prizes at the bottom of a box. After selling the dairy cows in 1984, Otto and Vivian spent more time travelling and went to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, and the United States. They also took a bus tour across Canada. When Otto finally retired from farming, he and Vivian went to dance jamborees all over Western Canada. He loved a good polka! Otto also enjoyed floor curling and participated until last year. He was known to be a very competitive player. Otto loved his fifteen grandchildren. He taught them a love of fishing, cards, and was always good for a joke. He was also very proud of his three great-grandchildren. Otto will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Vivian; his three sons Leslie (Elaine) Fodor of Mirror, Alberta and their children Lisa (Graham), Kyle (Michelle), Michelle (Jesse), and Darin; Alan Fodor of Carvel, Alberta and his children Jack and Piper; and Harvey (Laura) Fodor of Red Deer and their children Cole (Emily) and Taylor; and his two daughters Darlene (Stephen) Went of Bluffton and their children Jeanine, Andrew (Rebecca), Chantel (Josh), and Ashley; and Joyce (Gerald) Willsie of Caroline and their children Brittany (Brodey), Erin, and Katelyn. He will also be lovingly remembered by his three precious great-grandchildren Jason, Lyla, and Luke; his sister Helen Proskurnik of Calgary; as well as several other relatives and many close friends. With great sadness we say goodbye to Kathryn “Kathy” Jenine Howse, our loving mother, sister, partner, and friend. Kathy passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at the age of 60 years. Kathy was born in Calgary on January 20, 1962. She spent her childhood days in blissful freedom; watching birds and frogs at a wetland, riding bikes, and hanging out with friends. Embracing that freedom, Kathy was a life force who jumped in with both feet. She was outspoken, confident, and had a great sense of humour. Her love of the outdoors continued throughout her life, as she was an avid camper who travelled all over Alberta and B.C. exploring as many lakes and campsites as she could. The greatest pride and joy for Kathy was her daughters. She loved them with such a big love; she embraced motherhood and considered every moment with them as a precious gift. Another love for Kathy was animals. This passion took her to Africa in her youth, and she had a lifetime of pet companions who were part of her family. A house full of kids, dogs, and laughter makes a home. Kathy had many friends that she made while living in Beiseker, Airdrie, and Rimbey. She was a member of the Beiseker Bullets hockey team, where she played for years and coached for the last eight years. Her teammates became some of her closest friends, and would frequently gather with the team. Kathy leaves behind her loving daughters Savannah and Hailey; her sisters Heather, Cindy, and Jennifer; and her partner Shawn, who joined her on her travels and heroically cared for her during the years of her illness. She also has several nieces and nephews, other family, and many friends who will miss her laugh and honest insights. Kathy was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Jenny Howse. A Gathering in Kathy’s Honour will take place this summer at the Red Lodge Provincial Park Campground, near Bowden, Alberta, to celebrate everything that was Kathy’s life and her love of the outdoors. Family and friends are welcome. She will be laid to rest in the Mountain View Cemetery, Calgary at a later date. - JOHNSON
Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Norman “Norm” B. Johnson of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Centre, Calgary on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the age of 66 years. Norman moved from Camrose to Rimbey with his parents and sister Lorna in 1961. Later that same year, his brother Leslie joined the family. In April of 1964, Sheila also became a member of the Johnson clan. The family lived in town until they bought a quarter of land where they built their house and family still resides today. Norman obtained his schooling, Grades 1 to 12, in Rimbey. In 1967 Norman’s dad bought property and a building in the town of Rimbey, which was known as the Rimbey and District Tire Shop. Norman would help his dad after school and on weekends. When he turned 18 years old, he worked there full time so that his dad would have more time to spend on their farm. Norman purchased the tire shop from his mom and dad in 1987. Norman worked hard all his life and was looking forward to the relaxing time of retirement. His favourite saying was, “I’ll do it tomorrow, and if tomorrow doesn’t come – then it don’t matter no more.” Norman met Lucille Jones on December 26, 1975. At the time, Lucille resided in Sorrento, B.C. and she didn’t know how their relationship was going to work. They started off writing letters to each other, and as the years went by they started phoning each other. Norman would come for a visit every long weekend, and Lucille fell hard for him! Her dad called him “the bull-headed Swede!” Following her high school graduation in 1978, Lucille moved to Rimbey. They were inseparable after that – where Norman went, Lucille went! They were united in marriage on May 10, 1980. Their first son Steven was born on February 14, 1982. That was the only year Lucille received roses for Valentine’s Day!! On December 21, 1983 their second son Terry was born. To their surprise it was only him, as they were expecting twins! On October 18, 1986 they were again blessed with their third son Derek, who was so eager to see the world that he arrived in 10 minutes! Raising three boys didn’t come without its challenges, but they wouldn’t have changed it for the world! As the boys grew older, Norman would talk about the things that these guys would do, or get into, and he would always have a smile on his face. When Norman and Lucille purchased the tire shop, Norman would work in the shop and Lucille would be tucked away in her office looking after the books. They worked side-by-side for thirty years until they retired in 2017. The first couple of years of retirement, Norman got caught up on his “honey-do list.” Then all he had to do was sit on the deck and watch the lawn grow! He took great pride in how the yard looked! He also spent a lot of time in his shop, his “man cave.” Several times Lucille would go down there and Norman would be sound asleep in his chair! Four hours later he would appear, and would comment that it was just a little “power nap!” Norman joked with Lucille, commenting that one day he was going to pave the driveway so that when they grew old together, they could have wheelchair races!! Norman had been struggling with his health over the past year and a half. On October 22, 2022, Lucille had to say goodbye to her husband of 42 years, her best friend, the father of their three sons, the brother to Leslie and Sheila, the uncle of many nieces and nephews, and the grandfather to two precious grandsons Emerson, who is five; and Daxton, who is three. They were the apple of Norman’s eye!! He was surrounded by his whole family. You will be forever missed by all who knew you. Thank you for all the memories. Thank you for all the years we had together. You may not be walking among us, but you’ll be forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace Norm will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife and best friend, Lucille; and his three sons Steven Johnson of Rimbey; Terry (Joyce) Johnson of Sylvan Lake; and Derek (Jennifer) Johnson of Red Deer; as well as two treasured grandchildren Emerson and Daxton. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brother Leslie (Donna-Lee) Johnson of Red Deer; and his sister Sheila Frayn (John Weisgerber) of Rimbey; in addition to many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and several close friends. Norm was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Mary; and his sister Lorna. An Informal Gathering of Family and Friends to celebrate Norm’s life was held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Rimbey on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Sonja McAlpin hosting. All were cordially invited to attend in Norm’s Honour, joining the family for a time of fellowship, a bit of chit-chat, and refreshments. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Norm’s memory may be made directly to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, 3942 – 50A Avenue, PO Bag 5030, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4E7 (www.albertacancer.ca). - NORSTROM
With sadness we announce the passing of Gene Raymond Norstrom of Rimbey, Alberta. Gene passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Friday, October 21, 2022 at the age of 83 years. Gene was born in December of 1938 to Harry and Gertrude Norstrom, the middle of five children, on the family farm near Westerose, Alberta in the Battle River area. He started his education at the Lakedell School until the family moved to Bluffton in 1951. Bluffton is where Gene finished his schooling. He enjoyed playing sports growing up, with a special love for baseball and hockey. He played both sports for the Bluffton Bisons. Gene started his work career helping on extended family farms in different parts of the province. In the early 1960s he began working at the Esso Bulk Station in Bluffton. While working at the bulk station, he spotted the love of his life walking on the street. Gene overcame any shyness he had and asked Winnie Bushey for a date! Their first date was a movie in Rimbey at the theatre. In 1962 Gene and Winnie became engaged and were married in September of that year. The next chapter was a move to Rimbey in 1972 after the bulk station was scheduled for closure. Gene subsequently began his employment with Flint at the Rimbey Gas Plant. Pursuing new opportunities, he went on to work on a seismic crew for Pennington Drilling and Blasting. Wanting to be closer to home, Gene then finished his work career in the oilfield construction business for both Straightline and Parkland Oilfield Construction. Gene retired in 1998. In 1963 Gene and Winnie started their family with the birth of Raymond in February. Dean was next in July of 1964, Steven in February of 1968, and Brent completed the family in January, 1974. There were many treasured family vacations over the years. Most were to visit extended family, which was dear to Gene’s heart. He always spoke lovingly of how much it meant to him to spend time with family, especially those he did not get to see often. Gene loved to camp and took time to teach his boys to fish. He was also involved with the kids’ sports as they grew up, and spent long hours at the rink helping, which he loved. There was always room in the car during road trips for teammates, which made the trips so much more enjoyable. Gene was an avid collector, and as the family grew larger with grandkids he began his mission to build collections for them. Hockey cards and coins were his favourites. In 2020 Gene built a large collection of special-edition coins for each of his grandchildren. He was so excited to hand them to each grandchild! It meant the world to him, and now they each have a special collection that will always remind them of Grandpa. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. Cribbage and Smear were his games of choice. However, Gene would never say no towards learning a new game, so long as it meant spending time with his family. He also loved music and took great pleasure in going to dances where he could waltz and two-step to his favourite songs. Gene and Winnie always seemed so cohesive on the dance floor. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Winnie; and his children Raymond (Kathy), Dean (Jennifer), Steven (Bob), and Brent (Natasha); as well as his cherished grandchildren Jordan (Stephanie), Mitchell (Jacqueline), Connor, Kristin, Megan (Nic), and Logan; and precious great grandchildren Colter and McKenna. He is also survived by his sister Velma Capaniuk; brother Harvey Norstrom; brother-in-law Rick Gibson; sisters-in-law Melody (Bob) Hansen, Myla (Brian) Hansen, and Michelle (Gary) Zelasek; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins from both sides of the family. Gene was predeceased by his parents Harry and Gertie; brother-in-law Jim Capaniuk; his brother Dale and sister-in-law Dorothy Norstrom; sister-in-law LaVerne Norstrom; sister Rita Gibson; father- and mother-in-law Wilfred and Amy Bushey; and brother-in-law David Bushey. The family would like to thank Rimbey FCSS and the Rimbey Hospital staff. They would also like to express their gratitude to Dr. Imam and the staff at the Red Deer Regional Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion. A public Funeral Service in Celebration of Gene’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. Interment followed at 2:00 p.m. in the Iola Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Gene’s memory may be made directly to the Zion Lutheran Church, Box 133, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to the charity of one’s choice.
