  • LUNDSTROM

With unending love in our hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce that Agnes Elise H. Lundstrom (née Straarup) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, at the age of 85 years, on Friday, September 22, 2023, after battling several health conditions. Agnes was born in a farmhouse in the Last West District on September 13, 1938, to Danish immigrants Alfred and Mary Straarup. Shortly after her birth, the family returned to Denmark and remained there until WWII ended. Upon the family’s return to Canada, Agnes started her education at the Rimbey Elementary School and completed her schooling in Rimbey. Following high school, she was employed with Alpha Dairy in Calgary; returning to the Rimbey area to work at the Bluffton Creamery. It was during her years of working at the Bluffton Creamery that she met her lifelong soulmate, Clair Lundstrom, who farmed east of Hoadley. They were married on June 29, 1960. Agnes threw herself into farm life, working together with Clair and her in-laws to expand their cow/calf and mixed farming operation. In addition to farming, Agnes and her mother-in-law Greta Lundstrom grew a huge garden and preserved hundreds of canned vegetables and fruit every year. She prided herself on preparing meals for her family that were truly derived from “living off the land”. Agnes and Clair were blessed with their daughters, Candis and Tanya, who arrived in 1966 and 1968, respectively. During her time as a new mom, Agnes began partaking in events within the local farming community, especially at the Liberty Hall. Over the years, she became actively involved with the Liberty Hall Board, the Springdale Ladies Club, and the singing group, the Liberty Belles. Agnes loved the farming community, and she worked hard to contribute what she could to the community’s friendly and generous ways. As their daughters grew up, Agnes and Clair found time to add two more hobbies to their daily routine. During the summer months, they could be found on the “greens” at any one of the local golf courses; and during the winter months, Agnes was on the ice, curling. She became a curling enthusiast, with a competitive nature that helped their team land a position in the curling provincials one year. In 2004, with the completion of their child-raising years behind them and the arrival of their grandchildren, Agnes and Clair decided to leave the farm and retire to Rimbey. Agnes also loved living in town, as she enjoyed being able to surround herself with people and build a healthy social life. Everyone was always welcome at her kitchen table, as she served coffee and home-baked treats to family and friends several times a day. She also took great pleasure in hosting holiday events and preparing extravagant holiday meals. Agnes always made sure to add both the Danish, as well as the Swedish (Clair’s family) traditions to her holiday baked goodies. She also became the family’s official “hardtack” maker, which is a delicious Swedish oatmeal flat bread that everyone quickly devoured. Agnes loved her family and friends immensely, and leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and kindness. She will be forever remembered and deeply missed. Agnes is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 63 years, Clair; her daughters Candis (Richard) Edwards of Red Deer; and Tanya Lundstrom of Sylvan Lake; as well as four cherished grandchildren Jessa (Chris) Wilkinson; Kimberley (Dustin) Patapoff; Scott (Danika) Morse; and Carter Taylor; and three precious great-grandchildren Layne, Blake, and Ryder. She is also survived by her brother Kenny (Lucille) Straarup of Calgary; in addition to her close and dear friends, who she called her chosen sisters, Helen West of Edmonton; Helen (Carl) Coers of Rimbey; and Susan Grieshaber-Otto of Hoadley; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives; plus many additional friends. Agnes was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Anna Perry and Ellen McManus; and her brother Thomas. With respect for Agnes’ wishes, no formal funeral service will be held at this time. If desired, memorial donations in her memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Food Bank, c/o Family and Community Support Services, Box 404, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyfcss.com). • JACKSON

Suddenly and sadly, our beloved Jesse R. Jackson of Rimbey, Alberta was taken from us far too soon at the young age of 27 years. He was doing what he loved, just as the beautiful sun was setting for the evening on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Forever race the rain, Jesse. Ride the wind. Chase the sunset. Jesse was born in Wainwright, Alberta on December 2, 1995. At the age of ten years, he moved with his family to Rimbey where he completed his schooling. Jesse possessed an enormous passion for life that encompassed anything to do with bikes, trucks, heavy equipment, fire trucks, and fishing. Jesse enjoyed his occupation as a heavy equipment operator in the oilfield industry. He especially appreciated anything that was built out of yellow iron! As long as it was a hefty piece of extra large equipment, he was thrilled! Jesse was also a dedicated member of Ponoka County Regional Fire Services, volunteering for the Fire Department in the Rimbey area. He respected his fellow firefighters, and strived diligently to obtain his Fire and Rescue qualifications and licensing. Mostly, he was excited to finally be able to boast being allowed to drive the pumper truck – or anything else that was big and available that he could get his hands on! In Jesse’s free time, he looked forward to the opportunity to venture out for a day of fishing. It was being in the comfort of nature, with a fishing rod in his hand, that he was the happiest. Nor could a day end until Jesse witnessed or imagined the splendor of a magnificent sunset. His greatest love above all was for his family, especially his son Dawson who was the biggest and brightest sparkle that completely filled Jesse’s heart. While Jesse is riding with the angels, he will be greatly missed by those he has left behind: his parents Brian and Cathie; and his son, Dawson, who Jesse adored with unending love and attention; as well as his partner Kiera Davick; longtime best friend Travis Adzich; his brother Clinton (Cassandra) and their daughter Lucy; and his brother Cody. Jesse will also be greatly missed by his maternal grandparents Tim and Sara Herman; his paternal grandparents Harold Jackson and Dale Baldwin; in addition to several extended family members; his cherished fire department family; and many close and treasured friends. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Jesse’s Life will be held at the Co-operators AgRim Centre, 4905 – 48 Avenue, Rimbey on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., with Chris Chabot hosting. Sharing time together in an arena filled with dirt, while wearing jeans, a buckle, and a pair of old boots, is an honest tribute to the down-to-earth, kind, and generous man that Jesse was. If desired, memorial donations may be made in his memory directly to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, 800 College Plaza, 8215 – 112 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2C8 (www.stollerykids.com). He also held a great sense of humour, often having those around him laughing – sometimes in wonderment at how he came up with things! He will be greatly missed. Aubrey will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Mary; his children Matthew (Lesley-Ann) of Edmonton; and Laura (Derek) Middleton of Blackfalds; as well as his cherished grandchildren Caitlin, Marley, and Clara. He will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings, several nieces and nephews, other extended family, and many friends. Aubrey was predeceased by his parents, Wilf and Rose. With respect for Aubrey’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A Family Gathering will take place at a later date. Aubrey will be laid to rest at a later time in the Columbarium at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was born on July 4, 1927, and passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the age of 96 years. From a pack-horse guide in B.C., to seismic and relief drilling of landslides for the railway and roads, Ivan eventually settled for farming in the Rimbey area. To supplement the farm income, he worked for CWS Petro Services running maintenance crews, and later, operations in the oil and gas industry. With retirement, Ivan and Annie moved into Rimbey to enjoy many years of trips, golfing, family gatherings, and friends. • MILLAR

Gordon “Gord” Kennedy Millar of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, after a short battle with leukemia, on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Gord was born on October 8, 1934 at Foster’s Nursing Home in Olds; the third child of Charles E. and Doris (neé Botham) Millar. He spent his early years near Sundre until the Millar family moved to Banff in 1936. Gord attended elementary school in Banff and spent much of his time in the mountains skiing, horseback riding, and fishing. In 1947, the family relocated to Calgary where he finished his schooling and started working for Canadian Pacific Railways as a messenger between offices along the line in Calgary. Growing up around horses, in his late teens and early 20s Gord had the opportunity to work as a trail hand with his father, Chuck Millar, a well-known guide and outfitter in the Canadian Rockies. In the mid-50s, he returned to the mountains to begin working as a timekeeper for Parks Canada in Banff National Park at Lake Louise. When the Lake Louise office closed and moved to Banff, Gord moved to Banff as well and continued working until his retirement in 1991. Since childhood, Gord’s greatest love was cars! Before he retired he built his home at Gull Lake, Alberta, with the most important part being a garage big enough for his ’80 Trans Am, ’89 Firebird, ’81 El Camino, and many more over the years. At family gatherings the question was always, “I wonder what kind of car Uncle Gordie is driving these days?” Gord moved to Rimbey in the early 2000s, and yet again bought a home based on the size of the garage that came with it! He spent the last years of his life at the Valley View Manor in Rimbey where he met his partner, Sandy, who was a great companion until his death. Gord is survived by his son Tom Millar; his sisters Gertrude Wiechula of Calgary, and Gail (Sig) Seidel of Winnipeg, Manitoba; and his brother George (Betty) Millar of Nelson, B.C. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Paul, Wendy, George, Ken, David, Colin, Nola, Jeannie, and Christel; as well as several cousins and many friends. Gord was predeceased by his parents Charles “Chuck” and Doris; and his sister Gwendolyn Bradley. A public Memorial Service in Celebration of Gord’s Life will be held at the Seniors Drop-In Centre, 5110 – 53 Avenue, Rimbey on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend George Bradley officiating. • ZELASEK

For those who wish to view the live-stream of Garry's Memorial Service, please visit the following link: https://teams.live.com/meet/9321961218299 With aching hearts and intense sadness we announce the passing of Garry William Zelasek of Morningside, Alberta. Garry passed away peacefully, in the loving arms of his wife Michelle, on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at the age of 56 years. Garry was born in Rimbey, Alberta on January 18, 1967, to Harvey and Sharon Zelasek, the eldest child and a brother to Greg and Michelle. Growing up, Garry and Greg were not only brothers, but were the best of friends. They spent time doing many things together: motorbiking, skidooing, fishing, hunting, and camping – just to mention a few. However, Garry always said the best times they had were when they went down to the river valley. Garry was a very competitive athlete and participated in many sports. He enjoyed an array of school sports, as well as golfing, slow pitch, and – of course – his passion for hockey! Garry played hockey all through his childhood, up to and including his time playing Junior B hockey for the Rimbey West Stars, and finishing in more recent years with the Senior Men’s League. He absolutely loved hockey; especially when cheering for his favourite team, the Edmonton Oilers, and when engaging in a fun rivalry with Greg, who is a Flames fan. For a couple of years, Garry was also an outrider on the chuckwagon racing circuit – racing for his chosen second family, the Mayans. Throughout his career, Garry was employed for various companies. He enjoyed his employment with the Rimbey Co-op, All Structures, Teak Oilfield, PCS, NAL, and lastly, for Tamarack. It did not matter what job Garry had, he always worked hard and was a great co-worker. He continuously said that he loved his job – and he really meant it! In 1990 Garry married his high school sweetheart Michelle Bushey, and shortly thereafter they were blessed with three boys Justin, Lance, and Nathan. He was very proud of his boys. Garry loved to tease them and make them laugh – and, oh boy, that laugh of his was contagious! Garry was the happiest when he was outside with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, playing with his granddaughters, or being competitive in any type of family game. In December of 2020, Garry was diagnosed with ALS. Even when he received this devastating news, he never let this horrific disease define who he was. Garry always had a smile on his face, a joke to tell, a poke to give, and a laugh beyond measure. He was the first person in Canada with ALS to volunteer for the Capture ALS Study – a study that is trying to find a cure by taking spinal fluid for research. Garry’s doctor told him that he was the pioneer for this project, and that his number would be, like, 000001! Garry just laughed! He never hesitated when they asked if he was interested in participating in a research study, he just responded with a “yes”! His thoughts were: “I might not find a cure for me, but maybe it could help someone else with a cure, or at least give them a longer life with a slower progression.” Garry was very selfless when it came to the ALS studies, and he was participating in as many as he could. Then he suffered a fall in 2022, and endured a brain bleed that needed to be operated on. After this unfortunate fall, Garry was no longer allowed to participate in the studies because they did not know if his progression was because of ALS, or due to complications of his fall. Garry was distressed that he could not continue with the research; however, even with all of the setbacks and his terminal diagnosis, he still maintained an optimistic view on life and never once did he say, “Why me?” Garry is survived by his ever-loving wife and best friend of almost 33 years, Michelle; and his sons Justin, Lance (Braelyn), and Nathan (Shelby); as well as five cherished granddaughters Scarlett, Harper, Sarah, Esmé, and Sophia – whom Garry loved beyond measure. Those little girls made him laugh so much, especially when they would rip off his slippers and tickle his feet! He is also survived by his mother Sharon (Johnny) Nobel; his brother Greg (Susan) Zelasek; and his sisters-in-law Melody (Bob) Hansen, and Myla (Brian) Hansen; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and many great friends. Garry was predeceased by his father Harvey; his sister Michelle; parents-in-law Wilfred and Amy Bushey; his sister-in-law Sharon Bushey; brother-in-law David Bushey; and his sister- and brother-in-law Winnie and Gene Norstrom. He talked of occasions catching eels and snapping turtles. Wayne and his brother David had many good times together exploring wooded areas around their home. At the age of 22 years, Wayne joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He, kind of, informally met his future wife Joan during basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, by accidently kicking a soccer ball in her face! After basic training, Wayne was transferred to Borden, Ontario for his trades training. He went through Borden at the same time as Joan, as they were in the same trade. After graduating the Air Frame Technician course, Wayne did not get any of his posting preference requests of Ottawa, North Bay, or Trenton. Instead he got posted to Cold Lake, Alberta, which a month later is where Joan got posted to. Fate ensured they found each other again, they started dating, and – well, the rest is history! Wayne and Joan were married in November, 1975. They spent 14 years in Cold Lake where Wayne was involved in Scouting, fishing, bird hunting, camping, and boating. Afterward, Wayne and his family received a posting to Trenton. He was assigned the task of setting up the inside of 707s to please Brian Mulroney’s lovely wife Mila. It was not a pleasant task! The family then spent nine months in Borden before Wayne obtained his discharge and they moved back to Alberta, settling in Sherwood Park. Their final move was to Rimbey, where Wayne and Joan were active members of the Rimbey Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as the Rimbey Fish and Game Association. Wayne continued to enjoy camping and fishing until the last year before his passing. Wayne leaves behind his loving wife Joan; one son Justin (Leanne) Dittrick and their family Trinity, Tyler, Sam, and Hudson; and one daughter Shawna (Matthew) Wecker and their family Jesse, Layne, Rylan, and Kacey. He also leaves behind his mother Joan Dittrick of Thorold, Ontario; two brothers David (Donna), and Robert (Angie); and one sister Delena (Peter), and their families. Wayne was predeceased by his father Mac in 2020. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Wayne’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Al Lewis officiating. Wayne was laid to rest in the Glenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Sherwood Park at a later date. • PAYNE

With broken hearts we announce that Wilma Elizabeth Payne of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Acute Care. This beautiful, proud, witty, hard-working, humble, thoughtful, and strong lady went to join the love of her life, Roy, on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at the age of 91 years. Wilma, affectionately known as “Billie” by her family, was born a coal miner’s daughter in Drumheller, Alberta. Her charming accounts of her youth, and the long, full life she lead, were absolutely captivating! Wilma held a deep love for her husband Roy and her family, and was always supportive and encouraging. She continuously kept herself busy doing something, and never asked for anything. Wilma was fond of occasionally dabbling in a little gambling, and was a mega-huge sports fan! She absolutely loved hockey – especially Sidney Crosby – in addition to curling, baseball, and horse racing. She did not like to miss any game or race! In the summer, Wilma took great pleasure in either venturing to the local racetrack to watch her son Derrick burn down the drag strip, or spending a day at Century Mile watching the horse races – always placing bets on the horses her son Jodey trained. Anyone who had the pleasure to get to know and love her, soon discovered that she was a woman of integrity. Wilma will be deeply missed by her loving family and treasured friends, old and new. She made everyone’s lives so much better and brighter. We love you, Mom. Wilma will be forever remembered by her three sons Derrick (Rhonda) of Rimbey; Jodey (Sheri) of Millet; and Bradley (Deanna) of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; and her two daughters Wendy (Cliff) Reiling of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta; and Roxanne (Glenn) Waddell of Stony Plain; as well as sixteen cherished grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She will also be forever remembered by her sister Jean Warkentin of Drumheller; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Wilma was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2014; two sons Rory and Kevin; her brother Stewart; and three sisters Cathy, Essie, and Lolo. • MacKINNON

Our loving mom, grandmother, great grandmother, and JJ, Joyce M. MacKinnon of Bentley, Alberta, passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the age of 85 years. Joyce was born in Lorlie, Saskatchewan on May 28, 1937. She was the second child born to her parents, Bill and Tillie Webster, in a family of four children. Joyce loved her parents and siblings immensely and often told fond stories of her life growing up. After completing her schooling, Joyce went to work as a telephone operator in Virden, Manitoba. While living and working in Virden, she met Danny Kurtz and they were married in 1955. During that union they welcomed two daughters Debra Jean in 1961, and Karen Michelle in 1962. Joyce and Danny were divorced in 1972. Joyce then met the love of her life, Leonard “Abe” Bennefield, and they were married in 1975. Sadly, Abe passed away in 1976 from cancer. Joyce was broken, but stayed strong to raise her two daughters. On January 23, 1983 she was united in marriage to Albert “Bert” MacKinnon. They farmed near Bentley, where Joyce loved the farming life and was a great farm wife. Bert passed away in 1996. After twelve years, Joyce sold the acreage and moved into a condominium in Bentley. It took her some time to readjust to town life again; however, Joyce loved her condo and resided there for ten years before selling it and moving in with her daughter and son-in-law. In her lifetime, Joyce never spent one day in the hospital. She was always extremely grateful for a long and healthy life, but the last 17 days proved to be too big of a fight for her. “You put up a good fight, Mom, and we are all very proud of you. You are missed dearly and will never be forgotten. We love you.” Joyce will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughters Debbie Jahraus (Greg) of Leslieville; and Karen Metro (Dave “Red”) of Bentley; as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Cody (Trisha) and their daughter Harper of Bentley; Krista (Mark) also of Bentley; Lacey (Brent) and their family Brayden and Brody of Drayton Valley; and Jace (Brianna) of Australia. • CURTIS

“The Lord spoke to the heavy hearts that stood with hats in hand, 'Your sadness pains me deeply and I know you'll miss this man.'” - Baxter Black With immense heartache we share that John Rance Curtis of Hoadley, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the age of 69 years. John experienced an accident with his tractor in January and endured a lot of broken bones. He put up a good fight, but his kind and loving heart wore out. John was born on August 28, 1953 in Red Deer, Alberta. He was the eldest of nine children born to Rance and Inez Curtis. John met the love of his life, Susan Tregunna, at a Saddle Club dance in Mount Forest, Ontario. They were married and their first child, Brenda, was born in Mount Forest. Their adventures out west began shortly after. The young family settled down in Hoadley, Alberta and their second child, Robert, was born in Rimbey. John then accepted a job at Burns Ranches in Calgary where they lived for a while, and where their third child, Derek, was born. In 1977 they relocated to Big Valley and John worked for Brian and Ione Butterfield. The family then moved again in 1992 to the Santee's Farm north of Crestomere, returning to Hoadley in 1994 where John took over the family farm and they would stay. Family was very important to John. He was extremely proud of his children, and he treasured any time spent with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was filled with pride to have both of his great-grandsons named after him in the last year. John also loved hunting, fishing, ranching, golfing, and rodeoing. In 2000 he embarked on another adventure that he adored, which was driving school bus. He loved the kids and the kids loved him! He also participated in a few bus rodeos, teaching some of the other drivers how to accomplish some of the obstacles. John was also the president of the Hoadley Hall Board and of the Hoadley Cemetery. As well, he served on the board of the Lacombe Feeders Association. In his lifetime, there were many things John was "always" known for. He was always ready to help whoever needed it, and he always included everyone so no one felt left out. • NACHTEGAELE

With sadness we announce that Charlesena "Charlie" M. Nachtegaele of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the age of 93 years. Charlie was born and raised in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. She began nursing training at the Saskatchewan Psychiatric Hospital, but did not complete her training after she married Victor Nachtegaele in 1949. They purchased a farm east of North Battleford and raised a family of three children Peggy, Larry, and Sheila. In 1963, between Christmas and the New Year, the family relocated to Bluffton, Alberta where they rented a small house for six months before purchasing a farm northwest of Bluffton. Over the years, both Charlie and Vic were active members of the Blindman River Hall and the Royal Canadian Legion in Bluffton. Charlie became a 4-H leader as well, and started a 4-H Sewing Club along with the co-leader Marge Brown. After their children moved out of the house and on their own paths, Charlie worked for a time in retail at the Robinson's store. In 1972 Charlie and Vic became foster parents, and three boys Erwin, Malcolm, and Trevor joined the family and came to stay with them. Before and after the family's journey to Africa, Charlie also enjoyed being a judge for sewing, knitting, and other handicrafts at many of the local fairs. Vic accepted a job in Tanzania, Africa as a field and crop supervisor and shop mechanic with the Canadian Industrial Development Association, together with NAFCO (National Food and Agriculture Corporation), to help grow grain atop the great rift wall. In 1978 the family packed their bags, and Charlie, Vic, Erwin, Malcolm, and Trevor moved to Tanzania. The boys were enrolled at an international school in Arusha, and Charlie learned that cooking meals there were back to the basics. Shopping for groceries was very different as there were no convenience foods available and many items were not always accessible. After three years, they relocated to Sudan for the same type of project for another two years. The boys then attended the international school in Thika, Kenya. They enjoyed many holidays to Dar es Salaam, the Seychelles Islands, and all the nearby parks. Upon returning to Canada and after the boys had graduated, Charlie and Vic sold the farm and moved to their property in Buck Lake. They had a lot of fun joining the Buck Lake seniors in holiday trailer convoys, and fall campouts at the Buck Lake Hall that were complete with an annual play and lots of games. Charlie was a busy lady that was always sewing or crafting, and she enjoyed belonging to many groups. She will be fondly remembered for spurring on lots of good laughs, as well as her keen ability to play a mean game of crib! Charlie will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her two daughters Peggy Mueller of Langley, B.C.; and Sheila (Rob) Budd of Bluffton; her foster son Malcolm Peigan of Edmonton; as well as eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; other family members; and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Victor in 2013; her son Larry; two foster sons Erwin and Trevor Peigan; son-in-law Norman Mueller; two sisters Shirley Kulyk and Vida Brunwald; and her brother-in-law Steve Kulyk. A Service in Celebration of Charlie's Life was held at the Rimbey United Church on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Marco Ste-Marie officiating. A private Interment Service took place in the Iola Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. Service and Burial Arrangements for the Late Arthur Louis Schell entrusted to the care of The Life of Art Schell Art was born in Maryhill, Ontario and grew up on the family farm milking cows, doing chores, and working with and riding horses. He had five siblings that he played, worked, had fun, and fought with. Art attended Maryhill Separate School until age 14, after which he went back to help his dad on the farm. When he was 18 years old, Art and his cousin Gerry Kurtz decided to go west where they worked on farms and at the Blue Ridge Sawmill. They created memories that Art talked about right up until his passing. After a year they went back home to Maryhill, and Art helped his dad on the farm until he was called upon by his former employer to return to Alberta. When he came home again the following spring, Art met a young lady from Kitchener, Ontario by the name of Jean Metzloff. He chased her until she caught him! Two years later, in 1953, they got married and moved to Alberta. They worked on a farm near Calgary, but when Linda entered the world they moved to a farm near Rimbey, in search of one in the area to serve as a permanent home. They eventually settled on the location east of town. Art had no trouble befriending the neighbours, and they took turns trading labour and machinery. He spent many hours cleaning and repairing borrowed equipment. A few bad years left them destitute. Art was offered a personal loan from a wealthy individual, but with high odds of foreclosure he politely declined and went humbly into the bank and asked for help. The bank manager told him, "Don't you dare give up now", and saw him through the darkest times. They never saw a Christmas with no gifts. The family eventually grew to six kids, and the house began to shrink! Jean already had a floor plan ready, and in 1967 Art and Grampa built a new house - where Bill and Alma now reside. Art and Jean farmed another 33 years before moving into town. Once living in Rimbey, Art enjoyed volunteering at the local truck museum, and he was very proud of his service and membership in the Rimbey Knights of Columbus. For at least 30 years he also never missed an opportunity to donate blood, gaining special recognition from the Red Cross. Dad's Legacy The life skills that dad taught us were well beyond the confines of formal education. He instilled morals, values, and integrity; a handshake was a sealed deal. He maintained that, "If a man's word is no good, he's no good", "No lie can make the truth go away", and "You'll never be perfect; just do your best and nobody can ask for anything more." His wealth was his family. Dad despised laziness, deceit, greed, dishonesty, and arrogance, but he always took the high road when someone shafted him. Although Dad got really cranky if you didn't hold the flashlight just right, or if the truck didn't get back to the combine before the hopper was full, he had no problem shutting down the whole operation to go donate his rare AB negative blood ... "Because somebody might need it!" Dad would sacrifice anything for his family. The trust and good terms which he cultivated was exemplified when Kathy's husband passed away in BC. Dad dropped all of his harvesting to be a support to her, and the neighbours finished his harvesting for him in his absence. He was very fond of most animals, although he had to rename of his cows after five-year-old Linda recited their names in Show and Tell! Dad delighted in problem solving, inventing, and creating things; whether it be something for Mom, new contraptions to make farming easier - such as a wagon to stack round bales before such a thing was available - or something for his kids. He would pull a few pieces of wood or steel out of the scrap pile and disappear into the shop. As I say this I can still hear the hacksaw, welder, grinder, and his homemade drill press. He would emerge a few hours later with a new doll house, toy barn, bird feeder - complete with stand, or a perfectly-fitted bicycle hitch and trailer for his kids to collect bottles. He made those guys on Junkyard Wars look pretty lame. He loved tractors, reading, dancing, debating political issues, and A&W onion rings. At one point, a large portion of pasture and a quarter mile of fence became submerged in water due to an enormous beaver dam. As a well-taught problem solver, Bill procured some dynamite and blew the dam halfway to Mars, draining the small lake in a matter of minutes. The next day we learned how to own a mistake, as Dad went straight to the neighbour to clear the air over a flooded hay crop. The farm was his career, passion, his hobbies, and his life. Dad was elated when Bill chose to take up the traces on the family farm, and he loved to hear how things were going out there, never hesitating to offer his opinion on how things should be done. A couple of years ago, Linda's husband Brad gave Dad a ride all around the farm in his helicopter. Dad would still be talking about that if he didn't have to leave us ... Here's to our good ol' Dad, Who always gave it all he had. Many years of selfless toil, Nurturing that rich Alberta soil. Good ol' Dad was always there, To show us what's right, and what is fair. You're never stuck, he would proclaim, That giving up was pretty lame. There's always a way, and he'd show us how, To fix what's broken, or catch a cow. He made sure we could help ourselves, To navigate problems, or build some shelves. Perfect he never claimed to be, But Dad cheating others, we'd never see. Dad has certainly done his part, Each one of his kids, is a work of Art.

  • FODOR

Otto Dan Fodor of Bluffton, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Otto was born on October 15, 1934 to Mike and Helen Fodor on the farm by Warburg, Alberta. He was the fourth of five children. Otto attended Rainier School until Grade 8, and then continued to help on the farm. When he was 21 years old, he left home to go to work. Otto worked at a sawmill and on the oil rigs before finally finding a job with the Department of Highways building bridges for nine years. While working on a bridge by Donalda, Alberta, he met the love of his life, Vivian Rider, at a community dance and they were married six months later. They had two sons while travelling with the bridge crew and living in a 20-foot holiday trailer. In 1963, Otto and Vivian bought a farm north of Bluffton, and they built a house where their third son and first daughter were born. They had a mixed farm with dairy, beef, pigs, and grain. Since Otto married a woman who lived by a lake, he learned that fishing was really fun! He enjoyed fishing from a boat even though he couldn’t swim, and liked fishing much better on the ice. Otto also loved auction and garage sales, and was known to find a lot of prizes at the bottom of a box. After selling the dairy cows in 1984, Otto and Vivian spent more time travelling and went to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, and the United States. They also took a bus tour across Canada. When Otto finally retired from farming, he and Vivian went to dance jamborees all over Western Canada. He loved a good polka! Otto also enjoyed floor curling and participated until last year. He was known to be a very competitive player. Otto loved his fifteen grandchildren. He taught them a love of fishing, cards, and was always good for a joke. He was also very proud of his three great-grandchildren.
