With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Peter Warta of Rimbey, Alberta. Peter passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at the age of 93 years. Peter will be forever remembered by his loving wife and best friend of 70 years, Jean; his son John Warta of Red Deer; and his three daughters Hilary Warta of Rimbey; Trudy Warta (Leonard Thorne) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; and Jane (Ad) Vos also of Rimbey; in addition to nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren. Ruby Eileen Mandseth of Edmonton, Alberta passed away peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at the age of 95 years. Ruby Eileen Haggis was born on February 5, 1927 in London, England. Her early childhood was spent in the Battersea District near the Thames River where she and her sister Rose were part of a close-knit family. The happy childhood was, however, destined to end early, as by the age of twelve she became part of “Operation Pied Piper” – the evacuation of children from London and other cities in anticipation of Britain entering the conflict which would shape Ruby’s future. She returned to London in time to experience the Blitz – the intense bombing of London by the German Luftwaffe. Nights were typically spent in bomb shelters, including the London underground subway network from which they would emerge each morning to see if their home and neighbourhood had survived. A few years later, Ruby would meet and eventually marry a young Canadian soldier, Rolf Mandseth. When the war ended, she joined the tide of war brides who immigrated to North America to forge a future with their new husbands. The trials of her early life put some steel in Ruby’s spine, strength she would need as she joined Rolf on the family’s subsistence farm. Everything was new to the big-city girl and not made easier by her new family who delighted in teasing her about the challenges presented by her new life. Ruby had to deal with everything from the “outhouse” to the “killer” chickens! But cope she did and she and Rolf began their family, soon moving to the nearby hamlet of Hoadley, Alberta where they lived for the next twelve years before moving to the small prairie town of Altario, Alberta. Ruby was the matriarch of a line which included four children, fourteen grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Ruby was blessed with a life well-lived, surrounded by the love, respect, and admiration of her entire family. Ruby will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two sons Larry Mandseth (Linda Pederson) of Calgary; and Ken (Carolynn) Mandseth of Edmonton; and her two daughters Janice Crawford of Kinuso, Alberta; and Laura McKeddie of Edmonton. She will also be lovingly remembered by her cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchild; in addition to many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and several dear friends. With heartfelt sadness, Evelyn “Ev” Janet Kincaid of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away suddenly at her home on Monday, October 17, 2022 at the age of 68 years. After 50 loving years, Ev is together again with her beloved husband Kerry Patrick Kincaid, affectionately known as “Chief,” who passed away earlier this year, on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the age of 72 years, with his loving family by his side. Evelyn and Kerry will be forever remembered and greatly missed by their loving son Cory Kincaid of Rimbey; and their precious grandson Cadillac. They will also be lovingly remembered by Ev’s brother and sister, Stan (Sharon) New of Prince George, B.C.; and Sally Johnson of Blairmore, Alberta; several other family members; in addition to the circle of close friends they made while Ev worked at Costco Wholesale for many years, and Kerry spent his lifetime in the concrete business. As they both loved to spend their free time at the racetrack, Ev and Kerry will also be remembered by many racetrack friends and acquaintances. The family of Arnold Wayne Hood of Ponoka County, Alberta is saddened to announce his passing at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at the age of 81 years. Arnold was born on July 3, 1941, the middle child of George and Irene Hood. He began his employment career at a very young age, and was extremely proud of the work accomplished and the friends that were made along the way. Arnold was a true friend to all, sharing with everyone his friendly smile and firm handshake. Arnold will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife Gail Hood; his son Wayne Hood of Winfield; two stepsons Patrick Jamieson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Michael Jamieson of Calgary; and his stepdaughter Cathy Jamieson of Hazlet, Saskatchewan; as well as six cherished grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Grace den Engelsen of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away quietly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, November 27, 2022 at the age of 88 years. Grace was born in Breezand, North Holland, Netherlands on March 20, 1934. She and Arie met each other while he was working in her home town of Breezand. They fell in love and soon were married on June 1, 1956. Shortly after, on June 7, 1956, they immigrated to Canada and settled in the Red Deer, Alberta area. Sixteen years later, in 1972, Grace and Arie purchased a small dairy farm just outside the town of Rimbey. They later sold the dairy farm and went into beef farming just north of Rimbey. Grace was a dedicated wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, loved flowers, and nature. Grace was also passionate about photography, and loved photographing family and anything that sparked her interest – even the local Farmer’s Market. Her pictures were often seen in the local newspaper. Shortly after losing her husband of 40 years, Grace moved into Rimbey. She became involved with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, then the Rimbey branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Rimbey Horticultural Group. She also loved to dance and attended many local dances. Grace will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her. She is lovingly remembered for her friendly personality and cheerful smile. Grace is survived by her loving family: her son Clark (Shaunna) den Engelsen of Red Deer; and her three daughters Dorothy (Huibert) Vleeming of Ponoka County; Mary Olson of Rimbey; and Ali (John) Fontana of Leslieville; as well as ten cherished grandchildren. Ruby June Anderson (Hartley-Newman) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at the age of 91 years. Ruby was born on June 16, 1931 in Calgary, and moved with her parents and her brother Richard to a farm in Alhambra, Alberta where her sister Tilly was born. In 1944 the young family moved to Red Deer where Ruby finished school. She married the love of her life Roy “Chub” Newman in 1952, and they bought a farm seven miles southwest of Rimbey where they farmed together and raised two children; Roger born in 1953, and Karen born in 1956. Roy and his brother Buster owned a chuckwagon team, and Ruby would spend many hours after the races walking the horses along the Bow River. Sadly, Roy became ill and passed away in 1958 at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton at the age of 37 years. In 1960 Ruby married Clarence Anderson from Bentley, and they had a daughter, Della, born in 1962. Ruby was a very hard-working woman. She was kept busy looking after her farm, raising three children, tending to a huge yard and garden, canning fruits and vegetables, and making homemade bread, buns, butter, and jam. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and no one would ever leave Ruby’s home hungry! She also looked after pigs, chickens, and ran a cow/calf operation. When her calves were sold every fall, Ruby would get top market prices. She was very proud of her cattle. Ruby also operated the concession at the Rimbey Auction Mart for almost thirty years, and the Rocky Auction Mart for seven years. She always had homemade meals and pies, and was known for her famous “Ruby Burger.” People would travel from all over, and the business owners in town would go to the Auction Mart for their lunch, just to have a delicious “Ruby Burger”! Ruby was a kind soul, inside and out, and would always go out of her way to help others. She was very social, loved to visit, and also enjoyed going to bingo. Ruby took great pleasure in riding horses, especially with her brother Richard and his wife Helen. They experienced many good times camping and riding in the West Country. Ruby simply loved horses and hummingbirds, and her favourite flower was the pretty, fringe-petaled carnation! In 2011 Ruby endured very bad heat stroke, and her health slowly kept declining thereafter. In 2017 she suffered a stroke that paralyzed her left side, requiring 24 hour care. Ruby then resided in Long Term Care until her passing. Ruby will be forever loved, and missed, and never forgotten by her three children: her son Roger (Sylvia) Newman of Misty Valley, Alberta; and her daughters Karen (Randy) Cross of Rimbey; and Della Anderson-Thebeau also of Rimbey; as well as six cherished grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. She will also be missed by many other relatives and countless friends. Ruby was predeceased by her parents William and Elizabeth Hartley; her loving husband Roy Newman in 1958; her sister Tilly Riske in 2016; a precious great granddaughter Leaira Wilson (Cross) in 2018 at the tender age of five years; her brother Richard Hartley in 2021; and her husband Clarence Anderson in 2021. Dianne Jane Evers of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Friday, September 23, 2022 at the age of 76 years. Dianne was born in Calgary on August 5, 1946, a daughter to Crawford and Margaret Harrison. As a young girl she played a variety of sports, including baseball and basketball, as well as participated in the Shooting Club. After graduating high school, Dianne met her future husband Darcy at the roller skating rink. They were united in marriage on November 12, 1966, and welcomed their son Troy in March, 1968. In 1971 they moved to Caroline and opened a business, where Dianne kept the books among looking after many other aspects of the business. They resided on an acreage where she could fulfill her other love for horses and many other pets, including skunks at one time! In 1988 they relocated to Rocky Mountain House and Dianne started a bookkeeping business. She was kept busy with this venture until she suffered a brain aneurysm in 1997. Dianne’s first grandchild was born in 2004, followed by two more in 2006 and 2008. The smiles they brought her … never left her face. Dianne loved her family with all her heart. Dianne will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 55 years, Darcy; and her son Troy (Dayna) Evers of Condor; as well as three precious grandchildren Crawford, Waryk, and Aldawna Evers. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Allison Powell of Lacombe, Alberta on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the age of 89 years. He passed away peacefully at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre with family by his side. Harry was born in Strome, Alberta on March 1, 1933. He grew up on the south side of Edmonton, quitting school at Grade 8 to go work pipelines with his brother Duncan and his uncle Chester. Harry worked his entire career as a pipeliner and he loved it. Harry moved with his family from Edmonton to Lacombe, and then to the farm outside of Lacombe in 1970, where he continued to pipeline but also operated a small farm. He raised purebred Simmental cows, and won Reserve Grand Champion at Northlands Stock Show and Sale. In later years Harry switched to Charolais cattle. Harry is survived by his daughters Melinda (Steve) McPherson, Jacqueline Powell, Lori Powell, Arlene Soutar, and Kathy (Gord) Walker; as well as his grandchildren Allison (Devan) Krahn and their family Duncan, and Anwen; Megan (Garth) Meehan and their family Everett, Cal, Audrey, and Matilda; Wes (Kendra) Walker; Madison Walker (Cody Kaiser) and their family Keeva, and Brixton; Austin (Julie) Soutar and their son Sawyer; Erinn McPherson (Jordie Laidlaw); and Morgan McPherson. Even with her roots firmly planted, Shellie loved to travel. Brian passed away at the Bentley Care Centre on Sunday, September 4, 2022 at the age of 78 years. Brian was born on May 1, 1944 in Birmingham, England, UK to his parents Joseph and Rose Coley. He was a brother to his siblings John, Margaret, Susan, Ian, Gillian, Michael, and Terry. Together for 43 years and married for 37 of those years, Brian is survived by his loving wife Ingrid; and his sons and daughter: Simon Day, Jeanette Johnson, and Jason Bennett. He was also blessed with beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brian had a strong passion and love for his career working as an engineer that allowed him to travel throughout Canada. He retired happily from Olymel in Red Deer in 2018. Brian was very much a family man and cherished the moments he spent with everyone. It is with deep sorrow we announce the unexpected passing of Winnifred “Winnie” Elaine Amie Norstrom (née Bushey) of Rimbey, Alberta. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at the age of 77 years, reunited in heaven with her loving husband Gene. Winnie was born in Rimbey in March of 1945 to Wilfred and Amy Bushey, the eldest of six children, and spent her childhood on the family farm in the Lavesta area. Her early schooling took place at the Lavesta School, then a year at Buck Lake, later finishing her education in Bluffton. One day while walking down the street in Bluffton with her cousin, Virginia, a handsome young man working at the Esso Bulk Station approached Winnie and asked her out on a date. Their first date was a movie in Rimbey at the theatre. In 1962 Winnie and Gene became engaged and were married in September of that year. Winnie and Gene resided in Bluffton and started their family shortly thereafter with the births of Raymond, Dean, and Steven. During this time Winnie was not only raising her own family, but also babysitting for other families. In 1972 the family moved to Rimbey, and a couple years later Brent completed the family of four boys. In those early years, Winnie loved spending time camping, fishing, and being a loud, cheering hockey mom to her boys! Visiting the farm in Lavesta was also an important weekly venture for Winnie and her family, where many fond gatherings took place. Winnie was baptized, confirmed, and married at the Zion Lutheran Church. Being raised and having a Christian life was very important to her. She was an active member, and served on the board of the LWML and the church’s Ladies Aide. She also joined the choir and had a beautiful singing voice. Winnie’s first job, outside of being a homemaker, was working at the Rimbey Beauty Salon. Her next job was at the Rimbey Co-op, starting first in the bakery and then in the meat department. Winnie ended her working career with employment at the Parkland Manor as the supervisor of housekeeping. Winnie also enjoyed many hobbies and loved being creative. She especially accomplished a lot of crocheting, a pastime she greatly enjoyed. Together with her sister Michelle, they pursued candle-making, building Christmas centre pieces, and drying sliced apples to make rose bouquets which they sold at the Rimbey Market. Winnie also loved to bake, and she poured her love, heart, and soul into it. It was always a treat to taste her fresh-baked bread or buns, lefse, potato donuts, or a delicious jelly roll. Most important in Winnie’s life was her family, and spending as much time as she could with them. And when playing any type of card game or horseshoes, she was always up for a challenge and was quite competitive. Winnie is survived by her loving children Raymond (Kathy), Dean (Jennifer), Steven (Bob), and Brent (Natasha); as well as her cherished grandchildren Jordan (Stephanie), Mitchell (Jacqueline), Connor, Kristin, Megan (Nic), and Logan; and precious great grandchildren Colter and McKenna. She is also survived by her sisters Melody (Bob) Hansen, Myla (Brian) Hansen, and Michelle (Garry) Zelasek; her sister-in-law Velma Capaniuk; brother-in-law Harvey Norstrom; and brother-in-law Rick Gibson; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Winnie also leaves to mourn her passing, her best friend Ruth Donald. She was predeceased just a short time ago by her beloved husband of 60 years, Gene. Jack enjoyed riding horses, camping, and being with family and friends. It is with great sadness that we announce that Michael John Grumbach of Calgary, Alberta has passed away suddenly at the age of 37 years. Michael was born in Red Deer on May 21, 1985, the second son of Edward and Mhairi Grumbach. He had a full head of black hair at birth. Michael was raised on the family farm south of Rimbey, where he had many adventures with his brothers James and Andrew. Chores included forking up silage for the cows by hand and gathering eggs each day after school. Michael liked to drive tractors, trucks, and anything that moved; and was able to drive the large tandem truck around the farm at a relatively young age (once he could reach the pedals). He was operating the silage cutter as a teenager, and had a healthy competition with James who operated the swather. Once, Michael actually caught up to James and insisted a picture be taken as proof. During the summer his cousin John Badger would stay at the farm, and between him, Michael, and Andrew it was decided to build a fort in the bush. The fort was built on stilts on the side of a hill and was engineered to last. Having not known that floor joists sit vertically, the floor was made of a solid four inches of wood with liberal amounts of nails. It still stands to this day and is structurally sound. Michael grew up in the Anglican Church in Rimbey where he attended Sunday School, was baptised, and confirmed. He also attended the Nazarene youth group with James and Andrew. For many years, Michael was involved with Scouts, having gone through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Ventures. There was many a camping trip with the Waldners out to the bush in every season, including winter. Michael enjoyed camping with friends, hiking, snowboarding in the mountains, and being active. As a teenager, Michael took dance lessons with Mom and quite enjoyed it. He went on to being involved in a dance club at the UofA, and later various dance groups in Grande Prairie. He even did some competitive dancing. Michael went to school in Rimbey, and after graduation was accepted to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. He specialized in electrical engineering, and was accepted into the co-op program. Michael graduated from the University of Alberta in 2008. Following graduation Michael spent a short period back on the farm, and then found his EIT job in Grande Prairie. He purchased a house in Grande Prairie and rented out the rooms, including to his brother Andrew, to pay his mortgage. Michael later completed his EIT and became a professional engineer. He had several different jobs before contracting to Xcel Automation, where he made many friends and really felt in his element. Michael was a proficient engineer and well respected by all those he worked with. He enjoyed working at Xcel and he had only good things to say about them. He proudly wore his matching Xcel hat and jacket home on many occasions. Michael decided to move to Calgary and sold his house in Grande Prairie to Andrew. He then purchased a condo near downtown Calgary, and commuted for a few years while renting a room from Andrew while in Grande Prairie. Xcel opened an office in Calgary recently, and Michael mostly stayed in Calgary in recent years. Even from a young age, Michael always cared about his appearance. He wore a hand-me-down suit to many family weddings, and was always able to find a girl to dance with. In later years he did his hair just so, and cared about what he was seen in. During his first year of university he was placed with a roommate, Kamal, and the two struck up a close friendship. Kamal helped Michael refine his style and encouraged him to go out and be social. Michael also took up cooking and wasn’t afraid to try things, including making his own bread with flour he milled, making a turkey for a holiday meal with friends, or growing his own upright hydroponic vegetable/herb garden in his condo. Michael was always a deep thinker, and always to the point when he did speak. He had that special “Michael smile” when you said something he appreciated. Michael will be dearly missed by his parents Edward and Mhairi Grumbach; and his brothers James (Shawna) Grumbach of Rimbey, and Andrew Grumbach of Grande Prairie; as well as two nephews Nathaniel and Eli; and his niece Julianne. It is with sadness we say goodbye to Jo Hamm (Jahnke). Mother of son Michael; grandchildren Sam, Jake, Jewel and family; and daughter Robin (Alan); grandchildren Sean, Samantha and family. Eldest daughter of Katherine and Arthur Jahnke, big sister to Charles Jahnke (Darlene) and family, Krista Routledge (George) and family, and Marti Gramlich and family. “She was such a beautiful baby, always cuddly and smiling!” Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, moving to Canada when she was a small girl, travel was in her blood. She lived in Scotland when her children were young, fell in love with the people, and made lifelong friends. Jo loved life and had a great sense of humour. She was fun-loving and had a zest for life. Being raised on the prairie farm, she was a hard worker. There was always much to do and good work ethic was learned. In future years, she was the heart and soul of the family business, cultivating client relationships that lasted a lifetime. As the personal taxi for her children’s many sporting activities, she was their biggest cheerleader. She and her family spent many hours playing on or in the water, which they lived near all her life; Sylvan Lake, Alberta, Idaho’s Priest River, and La Paz, Mexico. Winter in Canada was filled with snowmobiling, and being avid downhill skiers, time on the slopes in many resorts was cherished family time. Music was a huge part of Jo’s upbringing. She was a gifted and talented piano player creating honky-tonk of many a tune. Her alto voice was a great addition to Sweet Adeline’s Chorus and singing harmony with her sisters every opportunity they were together. She was baptized in the Sea of Cortez by her cherished friend and pastor from Sylvan Lake in the 1990s. With her son by her side she left this earth, knowing she is at peace and we will meet again. Randy passed away at his home, with his loving wife Martine by his side, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Randy retired from the City of Calgary in 2015, after 35 years of service. He loved to travel with his wife, and also enjoyed tinkering in his garage. He took great pleasure in the ownership of many cars, some of them being true classics. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Louise Rose Damiani at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at the age of 85 years. Shirley was born on September 28, 1936; the youngest of seven children born to Charles and Ida Stern. Her youth was spent on the family farm in the Lavesta District, attending school at Lavesta, and riding her beloved horse “Zip.” Shirley became an integral part of the farm work, being significantly younger than her siblings and the only one left at home. As she grew into a young woman, she met a good-looking young man named Reg Damiani who piqued her interest, and they were married in 1954. Shirley travelled with Reg as he worked the rigs in Alberta, in the days when families could live in the trailer camps set up close to the rig. They lived and had their first two children while residing in those little trailers, which Shirley remembered fondly. In 1960, they purchased the Lavesta District farm from her parents. Shirley raised her four children, farmed, gardened, built a new house in 1970, and lived and loved as one should. In 1992, Shirley and Reg sold the home quarter to their son Shane and moved to the next quarter where they built a new house. They remained there until 2014 when they settled into a new home in Rimbey. Shirley was the consummate mother. She was definitely an involved parent. She had some uncanny abilities (we called them “witch powers”); she seemed to know when something bad was going to happen before it happened (or had just happened). If you thought you had fooled her about something growing up, you probably hadn’t (at least not for long!) Shirley also developed her own private “descriptive terminology” to assist in describing certain things in life the English language was apparently inadequate for, to no end of amusement to her children and grandchildren. Her primary focus was always her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley’s love for them was unjudgemental and complete. During her final hours with her children gathered around her, she demonstrated an amazing level of strength and courage. Her children will carry Shirley’s love forward in the care and protection of those precious grandchildren who meant everything to her. “Forever remembered” Shirley is survived by her four children; Pamela (Bob) Lawson, Shane (Shelley) Damiani, Darren (Theresa) Damiani, and Shauna (Geoff) Brodie; as well as nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Beth Damiani. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Reg in 2020; her parents; her father- and mother-in-law, Dominic and Maria Damiani; brothers George, Wilfred, and Norman; sisters Amy, Irene, and Elsie; brothers-in-law Joe Reis, Wilfred Bushey, Harold Cross, Wilfred Marchildon, and Reno Damiani; and sisters-in-law Norma Stern and Lena Marchildon. With sadness we announce the passing of Norman Douglas Hawksworth of Rimbey, Alberta. Norman passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Monday, July 11, 2022 at the age of 88 years. Norman was born in Debden, Saskatchewan on July 18, 1933 to Tillie and Douglas Hawksworth, the sixth of eight children. He did a bit of travelling – at one point spending five years in California with his brother Walter – eventually finding his way to Rimbey. Norman purchased a quarter section of land in 1960, married Iola Rose Schwieger in 1962, and together they raised three children: Dee, Dwayne, and Holly. Norman worked in the automotive service industry for many years. He worked at Sylver Service Garage for Syl Keith and Vergil Stevens. He then did a brief stint as a meat cutter for Percy Waldner, discovering that was not his thing! Norman then returned to the automotive field working for Bill McGeachy and Elmer Brown at B & E Services, which was later known as Rimbey Safety Services. The business was then sold to Dale Burchnall, then to Dean Vig, and finally to Keith Spelrem. Norman went with the business each time! He later retired, and unfortunately dementia became an issue a few years later. When Norman’s wife Iola passed away on December 24, 2009, Dwayne took a year off to care for him. Norman then moved into the Manor, and eventually to Long Term Care at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. While in Long Term Care, Norman was blessed with amazing care until his passing. Jim Gross February 11, 1938 – July 26, 2022 Our much-loved husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa went fishing in the sky the evening of Tuesday, July 26, 2022. Jim had a small-town childhood with his siblings Ward, Vivian, Ron, and Carol. A lot of great stories from his days in Gretna and Altona while growing up. Dad met Mom in Stettler when he came to Alberta for work, and they courted for four years and tied the knot on October 31, 1958 (64 years if you’re counting). Jeff came along in 1963, Lori in 1965, and the twins Lynn and Lee in 1966. Throughout his work career and oil patch years, Dad made his way from Manitoba to Alberta with him and Connie making their final retirement home in Rimbey. Whitecourt and Okotoks were great stops along the way. Dad’s work spanned as many miles as his fishing career. There wasn’t a fish that Dad couldn’t snag at least once or twice. Countless trips to B.C. salmon fishing and camping. Literally 100s of lakes have seen his lures. All of us kids, grandkids, and friends fit in the boat at one time or another. When living in Okotoks, Dad influenced a lot of local teens at the hockey rink, and celebrating a provincial win with Jeff and his team. He was a great coach who could shoot the eagle or tape your hands to a stick if need be. Dad was a great junior baseball and senior hockey player. Dad and Mom’s family grew with Jeff’s twins, James and his daughter Kolby and a little man on the way, and Derek and his son Braxton; Lynn and Wayne brought along Taylor and Victoria; and Lee and Rod’s son Tyler just blessed Dad with his newest great grandson Jax. Dad and Mom had great vacations and family gatherings together with each of us. Lori and Jay went with Dad and Mom to the Dominican Republic, Halifax with Lynn and Wayne for Taylor’s curling and Missoula MT for Victoria’s softball. Lots of trips to the farm, Campbell River, and Fairmont with Lee and Rod. Countless trips to the lake with Jeff and the boys. Dad also enjoyed hunting and a back road drive with Mom on any given day. Moosejaw Spa and Casino with Mom was a personal favourite of Dad’s. Mazatlán was a great retreat with extended families as well. We are saddened to announce the passing of Tomeko Kristinsson (née Yamaguchi) of Rimbey, Alberta on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at the age of 87 years. Tomeko was born in Tsu, Japan on February 20, 1935. She met and later married Gudmundur “Kris” Kristinsson in Kobe, Japan around 1956 and they lived in Yokohama, Japan until 1957. They then decided to relocate to Canada and moved to Montreal, Quebec. Tomeko and Kris had three children: Robert, Diana, and Linda. They lived in Montreal together until they divorced in 1967. She then returned to Japan for a period of time until she decided to move back to Canada several years later, settling in Vancouver, B.C. in about 1980. Tomeko also resided in Richmond, B.C. for a while before heading to Alberta and settling in Rimbey. She lived on her good friend Shoichi’s cattle ranch until her passing. Tomeko was a very classy lady who consistently looked very put together when it came to fashion. She was an extremely generous woman, continually wanting to take care of others before taking care of herself. Her love over the past few years was always with her cats: Pete-chan, Mimi-chan, Ku-chan, Hanako-chan, Cocoa, Dee-dee, and Nicki-chan. She was a lovely woman who will be dearly missed, but in our hearts forever. Tomeko’s life was blessed by her family. She was predeceased by her son Robert; her father Shusaku; her mother Yuki; and three brothers Toshimichi, Saburo, and Yoshihiro. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Diana and Linda; and four sisters Mitsuko, Atsuko, Hiroko, and Kazuko; as well as numerous additional relatives and many cherished friends. With sadness we announce the sudden passing of Elaine Dorothy McLean of Buck Lake, Alberta on Monday, June 27, 2022 at the age of 80 years. Elaine was born on the family homestead in Minnehik, Alberta, now known as Buck Lake, on February 26, 1942 to James and Agnes Miku. She was the youngest of six children and was doted on by her siblings: Lloyd (Anne) Micku, Esther (Frank) Smella, Sylvia (George) Pozsgai, Margaret Surgenor, and Alice Irwin. Elaine often fondly recalled how, as a teenager, she babysat for her brother and sister-in-law while they farmed the homestead, and her close bond with her nieces and nephews. She married Joel McLean and they raised their children: Darren (Charlene), Dwayne (Nicole), Angela (Mike), and Cheryl (Luke) on a farm in the Buck Lake area, where they resided for the remainder of their days. Duane was born in Rimbey and raised on the family farm in the Hoadley District. He attended school a mile from his home in a one-room school house, the Western Sunset School. The school was located 5 miles west of Hoadley, and was the same school his father went to. Duane took great pleasure in growing up on the farm, enjoying every moment spent outside on the land and with the animals. He especially appreciated his mules, and could always be found feeding his cattle with his team of horses. “Reunited with his mule, Charley, and heading to greener pastures …” Duane will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his son, Casey Page (Karen Dolan) of Calgary; and his cherished granddaughter, Hunter Page. Gordie was born on April 6, 1935 in Trochu, Alberta, one of five children born to Rebecca and David Zeh. He drove a cement mixer in Calgary for Burnco Rock Products for 35 years, retiring to the Summer Village of Parkland Beach in 1996. His loving wife, Betty, kept him busy tending to their acreage, feeding the squirrels and birds, and making half-hearted attempts to keep the “goddamn deer” out of the vegetable garden! Gordie was a self-taught banjo player and a life-long lover of music. He enjoyed picking his banjo for family and friends, and played in several bands into his 80s. Gordie is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty; his children: Barb (Gord) Titterington, Vance (Kathy) Zeh, Colleen Donaven, and Kevin (Kathleen) Zeh; as well as his cherished grandchildren: Leanne (J.C.) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory George Jonasson of Bluffton, Alberta. Gregory passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at the age of 65 years. Greg was born in Gimli, Manitoba where the Jonasson family resided prior to moving to Central Patricia, Ontario. He attended schools in Central Patricia, Thunder Bay, and Sioux Narrows, Ontario. Greg was a roofer by trade and worked alongside his brothers in Central Alberta. He was a great carpenter, and also dabbled in commercial fishing in Great Slave Lake, N.W.T. While in the Northwest Territories, Greg made many friends. The Northwest Territories stole his heart, and this is where Greg gravitated to later in his life. He moved to Lutsel K’e, N.W.T. to live with his brother Jerry and wife Addie. Greg loved to help family, and continued to make many friends with his kind nature. He would give you the shirt off his back – that was his caring character! Greg also possessed a great sense of humour. In the last five years of his life, after relocating back to Alberta, he got to know and love his grandchildren. They will remember him dearly. Sandra Lee Baker Bruhn was born in Vancouver, B.C. and passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at the age of 66 years on their beautiful farm near Rimbey, Alberta, with her husband at her side. Sandy moved to Red Deer, Alberta with her mom Edna at a young age, and her mom passed away when Sandy was a week from her 9th birthday. She lived with her grandma Lucy Opp for three years, and then with her uncle and aunt, Elmer and Frances Opp for six years. Sandy graduated from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in 1973, and had many interesting and diverse jobs over her lifetime. She always said the ones she enjoyed the most, was where she dealt with people. Sandy is survived by her darlin’ husband Chris; her sister-in-law Ulla; Chris’ children, Michael and Janean; her cousin Barb; and her fur babies, Kelsey and Scooter; as well as many cousins and friends. She firmly believed that family was so much more than blood, and therefore she is also survived by special sisters, Connie Pipke and Shannon Wilson, and their families; special sis Audrey Tippe and her family; and many special nieces and nephews. Bruce Arnold Tona of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at the age of 87 years. Bruce was a loving man who possessed strength of character that inspired those around him. He was charmingly articulate, and he eagerly spoke his mind – there was a harmony in the way he carried himself – it’s no wonder he had a natural talent for melody. Bruce was born and raised in Rimbey, growing up on the family farm. At a young age, he left home to work in the Alberta oilfields. Three years later, Bruce traveled to B.C. where he found a job working on road construction in the B.C. interior. This is where he met Lucille “Lee” Plamondon at a dance, and the two were united in marriage on August 30, 1958 in Trail, B.C. The young couple made their home in Rossland, B.C., and welcomed three children to their family: Tammy, Kim, and Derek. A job promotion in 1962 to foreman for the Department of Highways resulted in a move to Creston, B.C. A few years later, Bruce’s father had decided to retire from farming, and this presented the opportunity to move his family back to Rimbey and continue the family farm with his brother Jim. So in 1967 with a truck full of their possessions, they were Rimbey bound! An additional son, Darren, was born in Alberta, and the excitement to create a family legacy began to take shape. Bruce loved farming – he loved the land and everything it embodied. He had an ingenious mind, with an enthusiasm to innovate and successfully modify the machinery he used. Tona Corp. was formed in 1990 with his sons, Derek and Darren. His grandsons, Dagen and Ethan, will proudly be carrying on Bruce’s farming legacy into its fifth generation. Until his passing, Bruce was always thinking about the farm. Over the years he was also very involved in the community, spending time with Blindman Valley Surface Rights, the Rimbey Agricultural Society, the Knights of Columbus, GLDC Gas Co-op, and the PC Party. That natural talent for melody also ensured that Bruce was a musical man. He played accordion with his mother in a band when he was younger, and in Rimbey he was a member of a dance band. Skilled at both the accordion and piano, Bruce played by ear only. This joy for music was still present as recently as January, 2022, where he entertained patients at the manor and in long term care once a month for the past eight years. Throughout his life, farming and family were Bruce’s true passions. In his own words … “It is not what you have in life, but what you leave behind.” Bruce leaves behind a family that loved him dearly and will miss him greatly. Linda Marion Campbell (née Jehn) of Bluffton, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at the age of 73 years. Linda was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta on January 3, 1949, and was raised around the Pipestone and Rimbey, Alberta areas. She moved to Fort St. John, B.C. with her family when she was 17 years old. Linda met her husband Roderick “Buzz” Campbell in Fort St. John, where they were later united in marriage. They were blessed with two children, Jason and Stacy. In 1980, the family moved to Summerland, B.C. where they resided for several years; and in 1997, Linda and Buzz relocated to Bluffton where they lived until Linda’s passing. Linda will be forever remembered and greatly missed by her loving family: her husband Buzz; son Jason Campbell of Bluffton; and daughter Stacy Campbell (Keegan Andrews) of High River; as well as her granddaughter McKaela (Jonathan) Griffin; and three treasured great grandchildren: Reilly, Emersyn, and Silas. Our dearly cherished and loved mother and grandmother, Averill Lucille Walders (Tobin) nee Weiss of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at the age of 99 years, following a courageous and challenging battle with Alzheimer’s. Averill will be lovingly missed and always remembered by her son Ken (Rosemary) Walders; her son-in-law Sterling Graham; as well as her treasured grandchildren: Patrick Graham, Jackie (Mike) Loe, Daniel (Tia) Walders, Steven Walders, and Jessica Walders; and great grandchildren: Shyla, Jakob, and Addison. She will also be lovingly remembered by two sisters, Betty Gawthorne and Shirley Rogan; her sister-in-law Shirley Weiss; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Averill was predeceased by her parents; her husband David; daughter Diana Graham; two infant sons; three brothers: Marcy, Don, and Alan; and her sister Vivian McDougall. Averill was born in Stavely, Alberta to Robert and Daisy Weiss, and lived in Alberta her entire life. She loved being a mom and cherished her children deeply, spending many wonderful years caring for them and being a big part of their lives, and the lives of her grandchildren. Averill loved spending time with her grandchildren, and taught them how to swim, play card games, bake, and the enjoyment of fishing. She was also one of the best bridge players around, hosting many bridge parties at her home and serving her culinary delights to the girls. Averill very much enjoyed curling as well, and entered many bonspiels at the Big Four. When she could no longer play the game, watching curling was a must! Averill took pleasure in being social with her friends, but she was also an outdoor girl that loved camping, fishing, and homesteading on a trapline west of Sundre with her late husband, David. She was a proud and independent woman that lived every minute to the fullest, and conquered every challenge and obstacle that she encountered throughout her life; especially her determination to beat breast cancer and become a survivor. When Averill was in her 60s, she moved from Calgary to her daughter’s farm where she raised the best chickens and turkeys. After her husband’s passing, she relocated to Innisfail where she met new friends, continued her swimming, and took up drawing and painting. Averill also thought nothing of painting the house or tiling the bathroom when it needed it. We all used to say that “Grama had a bee in her bonnet!” Averill had a wonderful sense of humour and a twinkle in her eye. She took trips to Victoria, Ontario to visit her family, and to Bermuda to soak in the sun with a rum cocktail. She enjoyed time out to play bingo, loved the horse races in Calgary, and had fun at the casino. We could all learn a lesson from Averill, as she enjoyed all that life had to offer until Alzheimer’s changed her and we started the “long goodbye”. She lived the last of her nine years at the Lacombe Continuing Care Centre, where she was lovingly cared for by her son, Ken and her wonderful caregivers, and we “thank you” all so much for that. In remembrance of Averill, we should all celebrate life every day! She will be greatly missed and forever cherished. With respect for Averill’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. With deep sadness we announce the passing of Stanley “Stan” Palamarek of Lacombe, Alberta who passed away at his home on Saturday, February 12, 2022, just over a month away from his 87th birthday. Stan was born in the Lamont Hospital in Lamont, Alberta on March 24, 1935. He was the middle child of local farmers, Andrew and Pearl Palamarek. As an Aries, Stan chose his own path in life. After finishing Grade 12, he went to work for the Imperial Bank of Canada in August, 1954. Stan started his training as a teller with the Alberta Treasury Branch in February, 1958 in Vermilion, Alberta. By that November he was transferred to Hanna, Alberta, which was his lucky break because it was there that he met the love of his life, Ruth Anderson, who was a teller at the Treasury Branch there. Not wanting to wait until spring, the couple was united in marriage on November 20, 1959, which Stan said was the best day ever! Four children and six moves later, Stan and his family settled in Lacombe where he was the bank manager for three years. Stan was elected to Lacombe Town Council from 1980 until 1992, where he served on the Red Deer Health Unit and the Lacombe Foundation organizations. For many years after that, Stan bought and sold his collectibles, some of which included: coins, pins, dinky toys, military items, books, and comic books. He loved books, history, numbers, and photographs … but most of all he loved his family. Stan will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Ruth; and his four children: Barb (Chris) Angel, Dianna Palamarek (Ron Bray), Wendy (Randy) Kolesar, and Michael (Marlene) Palamarek. He will also be lovingly remembered by his treasured grandchildren: Nigel Sharp, Eric Kolesar, Jillian Kolesar, Ethan Palamarek, and Logan Palamarek; as well as his brother Alec Palamarek; and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Stan was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Pearl; and three siblings: Nick Palamarek, Olga Betey, and Rose Busdegan. With sadness we announce that Russell “Russ” Roland Robson of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the age of 89 years. Russ was born on May 26, 1932 in Bentley, and as a young man met his soul-mate and best friend, Joyce Stevenson. They were united in marriage on February 4, 1955 in Rimbey, and celebrated their milestone 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2005. For 35 years, Russ and Joyce lived and farmed in the beautiful Lockhart Valley, where they raised their family of five children. In 1992 they retired and sold their farm, moving into the Town of Rimbey. Upon his retirement, Russ always had time for a good cup of coffee, a fun card game, and a challenging round of golf. He also enjoyed cheering on his favourite NHL hockey team, the Calgary Flames. In his lifetime, Russell was passionate about many things; especially raising cattle and the blessings of life on the farm, but his greatest love of all was for his family. Russ is now at rest with his beloved wife, Joyce, and oldest son, Wane. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his two sons, Lee (Tina) Robson of Rimbey; and Doug (Karen) Robson of Calgary; and his two daughters, Debbie (Bev) Kallis of Red Deer; and Cheryl (Duane) Daines of Innisfail; in addition to five cherished grandchildren and one great grandson. As well, he will be fondly remembered by several nieces, nephews, other family members, and many valued friends. Vera Karen Wilson of Rimbey, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the age of 77 years, as a result of a stroke. Vera was born in Lacombe, Alberta and raised in the Kingman and Camrose, Alberta communities. She was the youngest child in a family of three children. As a young woman, Vera attended the Covenant Bible Institute in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Following bible school, she obtained a job at Northwestern Utilities in Camrose, which is when she met the love of her life, Jim, whom she saw every day while making business deposits at the Alberta Treasury Branch. Due to Jim’s work, they resided in several communities throughout Alberta before settling in Rimbey in 1978, where they raised their family and eventually retired. Vera was the first special needs assistant at the Rimbey Elementary School, and developed the program’s curriculum. She also operated four home-based businesses over the years, and was always actively involved in her church. Vera took pleasure in gardening, baking, decorating cakes, making chocolates, canning, sewing, crafts, scrapbooking, and creating slideshows, along with welcoming any opportunity to entertain her friends and family. She greatly appreciated visiting with her many dear friends over tea, or by phone. Vera was also very active, and enjoyed activities such as: golfing, bowling, curling, badminton, tennis, skating, boating and water skiing, cross-country skiing, and hiking. She additionally enjoyed the adventures of traveling, but most of all she loved camping and going on holidays with her family. Vera cherished any time spent with her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was gentle and kind, driven and industrious, and extremely giving and generous with her time. Above all, Vera was loving, caring, and compassionate. She will be greatly missed. Vera will be lovingly remembered by her three sons: Darin Wilson of Calgary, Doug Wilson of Truro, Nova Scotia, and Jason (Angie) Wilson of Rimbey; as well as two grandchildren: Katlyne and Kristina (Eric); and four great grandchildren: Nevaeh, Karissa, Geoffrey, and James. We are sad to announce that Stuart “Stu” Douglas Shippy of Crestomere, Alberta passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at the age of 62 years. Stuart was born in Weiser, Idaho on September 6, 1959, and immigrated as a child to Bluffton, Alberta in 1969. He was clever, generous, and enjoyed making people laugh. Stuart and his brother owned a heavy equipment construction company, and he was very passionate about running equipment. He always said that his customers weren’t just his customers, but they were truly his friends. In the off season, Stuart loved to travel, with Hawaii being one of his favourite destinations. He also loved to golf, ride his motorcycle, and visit with family and friends. In his younger years, Stuart was an avid hunter with many cherished trophies. “Stu was loved by many, and always brought a smile to the table.
