The Family of “Dno” (Dean Purdy) of Alder Flats, Alberta, announced his unexpected passing last fall at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the age of 62 years. Dno was born in Calgary and grew up in Hillhurst, a northwest area of the city. In 1972 when he was in his early teens, Dno moved with his family to Rimbey where he graduated from the Rimbey Jr./Sr. High School in 1977. Dno worked on the family farm for years, later entering the construction and concrete field with his close friends, working all around the Rimbey area. In 2005 he met Kathy, in 2006 he moved to Vegreville for a short time, and in 2008 Dno and Kathy settled in Alder Flats. He really enjoyed the acreage at Alder Flats, putting his green thumb to work to produce the most amazing gardens! Dno grew everything imaginable. His last endeavour was working for the Wetaskiwin School Board as custodian, following in his father’s footsteps. Dno was always available to lend a helping hand to others, caring greatly for his friends and relatives. He loved riding his motorcycle, and as you can see by looking at the photo below, he also loved 4x4ing … and mud! He also leaves behind many other close relatives, and a wide circle of cherished friends. Dno never had any children or grandchildren of his own, but treated Kathy’s children and grandchildren as if they were his very own. He was predeceased by his father, Jack in 2003; and his mother, Thelma in 2010. A Graveside Service in Celebration of Dno’s Life will be held at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. An Informal Gathering of Family and Friends, with light refreshments and fellowship, will follow in the Reception Room of Oberhammer Funeral Chapels from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If friends desire, memorial tributes in his memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. With heavy hearts we announce the passing of David Robert Lowe of Rimbey, Alberta on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, with his family by his side. Dave lost his battle with cancer and is now at peace. Dave was born in Lacombe, Alberta on February 3, 1946 to Percy and Verona Lowe. He spent his childhood on a farm in the Aurora District where he attended the Aurora School, and then completed his schooling in Lacombe. Dave apprenticed as a sheet metal mechanic in Calgary, attended SAIT and earned his journeyman sheet metal mechanic ticket. • HOWIE

With heavy hearts, the family of Lorna “Maxine” Howie of Rimbey, Alberta announces her peaceful passing at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at the age of 75 years. Maxine was born on March 7, 1946 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. She was the second child born to Howard and Annie Ward, who had five children: Ron, Maxine, Linda, Sally, and Kathy. Maxine grew up on a farm south of Flaxcombe, Saskatchewan, obtaining her schooling in both the Flaxcombe and Marengo, Saskatchewan communities. She was united in marriage to Pat Howie on July 6, 1963, and together they had a son, Lyle, who passed away as an infant. Their daughter, Cheryl, was born on February 23, 1975, and over the years the family resided in Calgary and then in Hanna, Alberta. In 1979, Maxine and Cheryl moved to Youngstown, Alberta and lived with Maxine’s long-time companion Ken Marr. Maxine made life-long friendships with so many people in the community of Youngstown, creating many memories. Following Ken’s passing, Maxine and Cheryl moved to Red Deer in 1996 where Maxine worked at Cash Casino for a few years. She then moved to Medicine Hat where she retired with her long-time companion Harry Jorgenson. They spent many happy winters touring the southern United States, and enjoyed trips across the border to Algodones, Mexico, as well as to Las Vegas. Maxine was happy to bring along her best friend Edith on their travels for the winter one year, and she was thrilled with a special “all-sister’s holiday” to Las Vegas for her sister Sally’s 60th birthday. Upon Harry’s passing, Maxine then settled in Rimbey in 2006 to be closer to Cheryl who was getting married and starting her career in education. In 2009, Maxine and Cheryl moved into a house together in town, and Maxine was employed at GTI for ten years. She was well-known as the “Elvis fan,” always wearing an Elvis pin and proudly displaying the Elvis license plate on her car. She often spoke of her 55th birthday, when Cheryl had surprised her with a dream trip to Graceland! That vacation was a wish come true! Maxine loved “her people” … especially her brother and sisters, and their families. She also treasured the annual camping “Christmas” family reunions that were held with each side of her family, the Wards and the Clarksons, every year. These reunions were a highlight of Maxine’s summers. Enthusiastically named “Christmas in July” and “Christmas in August,” she took great pleasure in spending any time she could with her first cousins and all of their families. Maxine also enjoyed curling, and was excited when she purchased tickets to attend the famous Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Red Deer several years ago. Together with Cheryl, her sister Sally, and her niece Jody – they really enjoyed the event and built many memories! Maxine also appreciated a great baseball game – especially any game with her beloved Toronto Blue Jays! At a big, special birthday bash for her 70th birthday a few years ago, everyone came to celebrate – with the evening ending at 3:30 a.m.! Maxine cherished that night! She loved her friends and family dearly. Maxine was one in a million – always wanting to make people laugh and ensure everyone was having fun. If you knew her … you simply couldn’t help but love her. Maxine will be forever loved and greatly missed by her daughter Cheryl Rallison of Rimbey; her sisters, Sally Pederson of Cereal, Alberta, and Kathy (Wayne) Rude of Olds; her sister-in-law Ruth Ward (Dean) of Powell River, B.C.; and her brother-in-law Doug Aitken of Red Deer. • NORSTROM

A true gentleman, Dale Eric Norstrom of Bluffton, Alberta, passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, December 12, 2021 at the age of 85 years, lovingly surrounded by his family. Dale was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta to Gertie and Harry Norstrom on November 29, 1936. He grew up near the Battle River and attended school at Lakedell. After leaving school, Dale worked a variety of jobs. One such job allowed him to travel throughout the country. His time in Tuktoyaktuk was among his favourite places that his work took him to. He found the landscape and wildlife to be fascinating, and had so many stories and pictures to show for it. In 1958, Dale was joined in holy matrimony to Dorothy Della Strain. His career took them to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where their first child, Carol Marie, was born. Deciding that they could no longer be gypsies with a small child, they returned to Alberta and settled in Bluffton. Dale then took a position at the B.A. plant. In 1962 they added their only son, Murray Dale, to their family. The family grew again in 1964 with the addition of another daughter, Leanne Gayl. Dale and Dorothy purchased the farm from Dorothy’s parents in 1967, and Dale found his true passion in life … farming. Like any man that has had to start a farm from square one, Dale had to work various jobs off the farm to keep his dream of farming alive. Together with his wife, Dorothy, not only did the farm stay alive, it thrived. With their hard work and dedication, and their love and respect of the land and animals, Dale and Dorothy had truly found their purpose. In 1971 the family became complete with the arrival of their third daughter, Kari Jo. Although Dale’s stature could be intimidating to some, for those lucky enough to know him, what really shone through was his love, kindness, and respect he had for others. A man of great integrity, he would quickly jump at the opportunity to help a family member, neighbour, or friend. Dale was a huge sports fan, following hockey, baseball, and curling. He also faithfully followed the chuckwagon races, keeping stats in a notebook. Dale was a master cribbage player, and rarely lost a game. If you could ever beat him with a hand of crib, it was something to be celebrated! Dale’s yearly camping and fishing trips with his son were adventures he truly treasured. Of all the hats he wore, that of Grandpa was, by far, his favourite. The addition of his cherished grandchildren made Dale’s already huge heart swell even more with love and pride. His great grandson, Marshall, was the apple of his eye, and he treasured every moment he got to spend with him. Dale was a gentle giant, a true gentleman who lived a life filled with the old-school values of integrity, love, honour, and respect. We are so grateful for the man that Dale was … and so honoured that we got to call him “Dad”. Dale will be lovingly remembered and immensely missed by his family: his son, Murray Norstrom of Bluffton; and his three daughters, Carol (Dave) Kreutz of Bluffton; Leanne (Bill) Coleman of Bluffton; and Kari Norstrom also of Bluffton; in addition to five cherished grandchildren: Nathan (Jeanette), Tanner, Ashley (Travis), Riley, and Kelsey (Murray); and one precious great grandson, Marshall. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by two brothers, Gene (Winnie) Norstrom of Rimbey; and Harvey Norstrom of Edmonton; and his sister, Velma Capaniuk of Alder Flats; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many close friends. Dale was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Dorothy in 2007; one sister, Rita, his brother-in-law, Jim Capaniuk; and his sister-in-law, LaVerne Norstrom. A Family Celebration of Dale’s Life was held at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes in his memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. • PALM

Leo Norman Palm died peacefully at home on Monday, November 1, 2021. Leo was born on September 1, 1926 in his grandparents’ home in the Medicine Hills, and raised on his family’s farm near Eckville. While he attended school at the Estonian School until Grade 8, his life’s work and most significant education was farming. Ruth, his wife of nearly 72 years, was his partner in this, and all things. They were married on January 4, 1950. Two years later, they bought land at Forshee where they built a life full of the things they loved most: children, horses, and music. True to his Finnish heritage, Leo often greeted visitors to the farm with an enthusiastic “Kuinka se menee.” He saunaed most Saturdays for the duration of his life, and passed a deep love of this tradition onto his children and grandchildren. Other pleasures included singing with the Forshee Farmers, old-time dancing, fiddle music, camping (particularly out west), slo-pitch, card games, curling, horseshoes, and horsemanship. While Leo took great joy in all these things, none of them made his blue eyes light up quite like the arrival of a new baby, or music played by the family. Having lived over 95 years, Leo weathered many losses, including the deaths of his parents William and Irene; brothers Harold, Jack, and Ron; sisters Phyllis Erickson, Thelma Staniforth, and Betty Shultz; daughter Lois Johns; sons Rod and Gord; son-in-law Neil White; and grandson Eli. Over the course of his lifetime, Leo amassed a wide circle of family and friends. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ruth; daughters Jocelyn Tennison (Ted), Barbara White, and Kathleen (Gord Rutherford); sons Frank (Gale), Norman (Jane), and Don (Shawn); son-in-law Barry Johns; daughters-in-law Mary and Anette; twenty-three grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; brother Bill (Ellen); brother-in-law Keith Wright (Kathy); and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives, dear friends, neighbours, and community members. The Palm family extends their deepest gratitude to staff at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey FCSS and the homecare workers who took such good care of Leo these last years. We are forever in your debt. A private service was held for the immediate family at the Rimbey United Church on Saturday, November 6, 2021. Leo was laid to rest in the Bradshaw Cemetery at a later date. Donations made in his name may be directed to the Forshee Hall, RR 1, Site 5, Bentley, Alberta T0C 0J0; to Rimbey FCSS, Box 404, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyfcss.com); or to a charity of the donor’s choice. They had a mixed farm that included grain, hay, Limousine cattle, horses, chickens, ducks, and geese; as well as the occasional stray turkey, rabbits, and other assorted animals. • KEITH

The world has lost a hard-working, kind, and genuine gentleman. With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Herbert “Herb” John Daniel Keith of Rimbey, Alberta. Herb passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the age of 94 years. Herb was born on the family farm west of Rimbey on December 3, 1926. He attended primary school in the Fuller District, and obtained most of his high school education in Rimbey. Herb helped out on the farm for many years, supplementing the farm income by trucking and working in the oil patch (cat skinning). In 1950 he was united in marriage to Maxine Strachan, and together they resided on the family farm for a few years before relocating into Rimbey in 1956, where Herb worked for Sylver Service Garage. Their family was blessed with four children: Linda, Randy, David, and Patty. For a short stint, Herb and Maxine moved their young family to the Sundre area, where Herb worked at the sawmill, and Maxine was the cook. They then moved to Viking where Herb stock-piled gravel for the Canadian National Railway. Their hearts always remained in Rimbey though, and it wasn’t long before they moved back home and Herb resumed his employment with Sylver Service Garage, obtaining his mechanic papers. In 1960, he went to work at the Rimbey Gas Plant, retiring in 1989. It was also in 1960 that Herb and Maxine bought and moved an old house into town, a home where they happily resided for many years. He relocated to the Valley View Manor in 2019. Herb was a valued member of the Rimbey community, helping out with the volunteer Fire Department and as a member of the Rimbey United Church. He drove ambulance for a while, and volunteered his time driving the Blindman Handi-Van. Herb was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Rimbey Branch No. 36; the Rimbey Kitchener Masonic Lodge, No. 95; the Scottish Rite; the Order of the Eastern Star; as well as the Al Shamal Shriners, and the Ponoka Shrine Fire Truck Unit. He loved to keep busy in the community, yet he also enjoyed his down-time when he could be found tinkering in his garden, traveling, hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying a relaxing day on the golf course. Herb will be lovingly remembered by his very dear friend of 13 years, Joyce Eggleston, and all of her family; his daughters: Linda (Ray) Babiuk; and Patty Keith; and his daughter-in-law, Linda Keith. He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Nikki (Kyler), Leslee (Troy), John, Danny, Scott, Dean (Amanda), and Kristen; his eight great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and numerous treasured friends. Herb was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Maxine in 2006; sons, Randy in 2011 and David in 2019; and his siblings: two brothers, Sylvanus and Donald; and one sister, Peggy. Herb was the last of his generation to leave us. He will be greatly missed. A Private Family Service in Celebration of Herb’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church on Monday, November 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Marco Ste-Marie officiating. A Public Graveside Service followed at 1:30 p.m. in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Rimbey. Gloria especially took pleasure in quadding, and chasing cows around the farm! She also loved any time that was spent painting or enjoying her unique talent of writing in decorative calligraphy. • ANDERSON

Laurence Roy Anderson of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the age of 89 years, with his wife by his side. Laurence was born on May 27, 1932 near Bashaw, Alberta to Gullie Marie Vicktoria Stenerson (nee Sahlin) and Ole Stenerson, and was the eighth child of ten children. Shortly after his mother died in 1936, Laurence was placed in an orphanage and was soon adopted by Daisy Estella Anderson (nee Cornell), a teacher, and Andrew Anderson, a farmer near Calmar, Alberta. It was there that he became a little brother to Ethel Mae Anderson. Andrew Anderson died when Laurence was just nine years old, and the family remained on the farm until Daisy married a former school mate, Noel Clair “Cube” Swanson, and she relocated to the homestead Cube settled in 1911, northeast of Rimbey. Laurence excelled at school with little effort, and was scheduled to attend Grade 10 in Leduc. When Cube died from pulmonary thrombosis, Laurence had to quit school and take over the farming operation at the age of fourteen years. When he was just nineteen years old, Laurence met Rose Mary Hagemann, the teacher at the Crystal Springs School, and after a seven-year courtship (with letter writing – no phones – and with dates few and far between) they were married on August 6, 1958. Over the next two years, the pride of Laurence’s life - their two daughters, Debbie and Brenda, were born. He welcomed two sons-in-law to the family, Gordon Gustafson in 1988, and Gerald Borgel in 2000. The family was complete with the precious additions of his granddaughter, Alexandra in 1992, and his grandson, Theron in 1996. Laurence was a kind and loving family man who gave the best hugs! He especially made sure his wife, daughters, and grandchildren had vehicles that would get them safely home. Laurence always said that farming was good to him. His farming career started with the use of horses for haying, planting, and plowing. In 1969, Laurence and his brother-in-law, Clarence, purchased a “new on the market” square bale stacker, and for many years they did custom stacking far and wide. He also managed up to 300-head of beef cattle at one time. Laurence was still farming this year, using his modern equipment with air-conditioned tractors and large round balers with computer-controlled electronics! Over the years he made modifications to equipment to help in his farming operation, and invented many tools to make his work easier. With the help of the community, Laurence also built the family home. He liked to work with wood, and created many handy dressers, cabinets, shelves, drawers, box kites, and farm buildings. If he saw a problem, he also came up with a solution. Laurence also enjoyed watching many sports; in particular, those in which his grandchildren were participants. Laurence was seldom seen without his cowboy hat, wranglers, and cowboy boots. He was even asked to pose with several Japanese tourists while on the beach in Hawaii – a picture captured with a “real” cowboy! Laurence enjoyed curling for many years, and just may be the only curler who retrofitted his cowboy boots with permanent slider and grip! He also thoroughly enjoyed his trip to Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden with his sister, Ethel and her husband, Jo Storhaug. They loved seeing the countryside and farm operations in those foreign nations, as well as the experience of driving on the Autobahn. Laurence served on the Rimbey Agricultural Society Board; for over 20 years as a member of the Rimbey Rodeo Board; and over 50 years on the Blindman Valley Rural Electrification Association (now known as EQUS), receiving the Award of Excellence from the Rural Electrification Association on his retirement from the board. Laurence leaves behind to mourn, his devoted wife of 63 years, Rose; his daughter, Debbie (Gordon) and their children, Alexandra and Theron; and his daughter, Brenda (Gerald); as well as his sister, Ethel Storhaug. He also leaves behind his birth brother, Ken (Betty) Opertshauser; his birth sister, Eileen (Ed) Trefz; his brothers-in-law, Clarence (Donna) Hagemann, and Walter (Gladys) Hagemann; his sister-in-law, Lorraine (Gordon) McFadden; in addition to many nieces and nephews; great and great-great nieces and nephews; along with many treasured neighbours and friends. "Forever in our hearts." With respect for Laurence’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. If friends desire, memorial tributes in his memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, or to Rimbey Home Care (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com); the Rimbey FCSS (www.rimbeyfcss.com); the Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca); the Canadian Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.ca); or to the charity of one’s choice. Ronald was born in Innisfail, Alberta on February 15, 1938 to Harris and Eunice Smith. He was a hard worker, farming until 2007, in addition to welding. Welding and tinkering in his shop were the second loves of Ron’s life. He liked nothing better than to dismantle a tractor or engine, and rebuild it. Ron spent the last few years of his life rebuilding antique tractors in his shop with his son, Brent. He loved to show them off and would haul them to Lacombe for Lacombe Farm Days where his W-30 would be on the threshing machine, and his other W-30 would be entered in the tractor pull. Ron was also a fantastic fabricator. He had a photographic memory and only needed measurements to build something. Ron built dune buggies for his children, which they used until the buggies were worn out. He also loved to visit the casino on occasion and gamble a little. Ron and his wife, Judy also spent a few winters in Arizona that they thoroughly enjoyed. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. • BRETON

With heartfelt sorrow, the family of Louis Julien Joseph Breton of Rimbey, Alberta shares the sad news of his sudden passing at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at the age of 61 years. Louis was born on October 1, 1959 in Quebec. He was raised in New Brunswick, and moved to Alberta in 1977. Louis worked many jobs throughout his life, although his main profession and love was trucking. He hauled cattle, but mostly worked in the oilfield industry and hauled equipment for various companies. Louis absolutely loved trucking, until a shoulder injury in January of 2020 left him unable to drive a truck. He then worked in the shop at Midwest Propane when a second injury rendered him unable to work at all. Louis had many talents, and enjoyed sharing them. He played the piano, guitar, and harmonica. Louis was also exceptionally crafty and knowledgeable, and could build just about anything. He was a very happy man, who also enjoyed any time visiting with friends and family. He possessed an extremely large heart, and would go out of his way to help anyone in need. His oldest daughter and son-in-law joined the R.C.M.P., and that filled Louis with tremendous pride. He had always been a family man, with his family being the most important thing to him, and he was certainly the best husband a girl could ever dream of. Louis was incredibly loved, and will be terribly missed. Louis leaves behind his loving family: his wife, Emily; two daughters, Jennifer “Jai” Wells and her husband, John and their son, JR of Ponoka; and Cindy Breton and her son, Phillip of Penhold; as well as his stepson, Dylan Carruthers of Rimbey; and his stepdaughter, Samantha Carruthers of Kelowna, B.C. Richard Lee Adams of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Acute Care on Friday, September 10, 2021 at the age of 74 years. Richard was born in Rimbey to Peter and Margaret Adams, the fourth of their six sons. In his early years he lived on his grandfather’s farm east of Rimbey in the summer, and moved with the family to the sawmill site west of Rimbey for the winter months, where they lived in a small cabin. It was truly a homesteader’s life. Later the family moved to their own farm, and as the boys grew they had plenty of work to do. Their cousins came to spend the summer and also took part in fall hunting trips so there was fun as well, making good memories. It was a childhood many today would envy. Richard lived on the farm with his parents for most of his life, but did have his own place for a few years. During this time he was blessed with the friendship and extraordinary kindness of his close neighbours. A few years before his mom passed, he moved back to the family home. Over the years, Richard spent a lot of time with his dad. With others, they restored a lath mill, and in the summer they enjoyed getting together with a crew to put on mill demonstrations at local country fairs. Perhaps Richard’s happiest times were when he joined his younger brother, Russell, to entertain by singing and playing his guitar at a circuit of care homes in Rimbey and surrounding communities. He liked to visit and made many friends there. Part of their program was gospel music, a way to share an abiding Christian faith. After his dad passed, Richard moved to the Rimbey Valley View Manor where he resided until his passing. Richard will be missed by his family, who carry their special memories of him: his brothers, Gerald (Donna), Brian (Beverly), Stuart (Judy), Ronald (Janet), and Russell (Lori); many nephews, nieces and their children; his dear aunt, Peggy (Lyle) Wahl; as well as numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and grandparents; two sisters-in-law, Helen Adams and Dallas Adams; his nephew, Stanley Adams; and many aunts and uncles. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Richard’s Life was held at the Meadowbrook Church, near Crestomere, Alberta on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. To view the pre-recorded service, please visit the following link: https://youtu.be/V6Myg5o4Zpw. • HATALA

With great sadness we say goodbye to a wonderful man, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Dale Joseph Hatala, affectionately known as “Speed,”of Rimbey, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, September 10, 2021 at the age of 75 years, after a long struggle with personal health issues. Dale was born in Lacombe, Alberta on February 24, 1946 to Joseph Paul and Agnes (nee Olson) Hatala. He grew up in Crestomere, and in 1962 his parents moved the family to a farm 2 ¼ miles west of Rimbey. Love struck Dale in 1965 when he met Linda Hawkings, and they were united in marriage on March 18, 1966. They resided in Rimbey for a short time before moving to the Leedale area in 1969, where they farmed and milked cows. In 1974, Dale and Linda bought and built the dairy farm located 2 ½ miles west of Rimbey where they milked cows, raised cattle, and grain/hay farmed for almost 20 years. In 1994, they sold the operation and relocated to the original family farm 2 ¼ miles west of Rimbey, where they currently reside. Dale was a man of character, and a jack-of-all-trades. He was a mechanic, a body man, and worked on the oil rigs. He had a water-drilling company, a welding company, and a corral-cleaning company. Dale was a dairy farmer, a grain and beef farmer, and even did a little bale hauling. He owned a welding truck, was forever a car salesman, and was – most definitely – a professional bullshitter! He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Dale loved his family and friends. The coffee was always on … and you were always welcome. Dale will be forever remembered by his best friend, partner, and wife of 56 years, Linda; and his children: Tracey (Tom) Gardner, Shawn Hatala, and Tammy (Chad) Holmes. He will also be lovingly remembered by his five cherished grandkids: Danielle (JR - as Dale called him), Riley (Erin), Josh (Sam), Alena (Stu) and Baby Brinley; as well as six precious great grandkids: Hunter, Jacob, Faith, Chase, Bryer, and Waylon. Dale is also survived by many other family members and friends that he cared deeply for. He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Agnes; his brother, David; a brother-in-law, Jack; and his in-laws, Duke and Helen Hawkings. • LOHMANN

Beate Lohmann of Hoadley, Alberta passed away peacefully at her home, with family by her side, on Monday, August 23, 2021 at the age of 88 years. Beate “Trixie” was born on June 14, 1933 in Friesack, Germany to Lutheran Pastor Otto Wettberg and Ilse Wettberg. In her youth, she enjoyed many adventures with her friends and family. Her strength of character began when she, along with her parents and three brothers, endured many hardships during WWII. Her kind and compassionate nature compelled her to study pediatric nursing in Germany. During this time, she met and married Bernd Lohmann on December 23, 1952. Not long after, in April of 1953, they fulfilled their dream of immigrating to Canada. Their arrival in Canada started at the Halifax harbour, and they drove their Volkswagen car to the prairies. They purchased their first three quarters of land, and their farmland base continued to expand in Hoadley, Alberta. Their mixed crop and livestock farm flourished over the years with pigs, sheep, beef and dairy cows, horses, chickens, and of course, many family pets. Through the years, they lovingly raised five children who worked tirelessly together with their parents in the production of these animals and crops. Beate, as a dedicated and caring mother to her five children, was inspired to grow a very large vegetable garden, milk dairy cows (cream quota), bale hay, sew her children’s clothing, cook, bake, do canning, crochet, knit, and quilt – all to lovingly provide for her family. She was very proud to support each and every one of her children through their completion of post-secondary education; making her feel ensured that they would each have a strong and stable future. Beate loved to travel, play bingo, take bus trips to casinos, volunteer for the Hoadley Happy Gang, enjoy activities at the Hoadley Hall; and she also joined TOPS. Some of her most memorable trips included: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many areas of the United States - including an Alaskan cruise - as well as Nova Scotia/Cape Breton, and Hawaii. She tremendously enjoyed her five children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, along with her siblings, extended family, friends, and neighbours. Beate made a devoted effort to maintain the German language and traditions. Everyone who spent time with Beate knew her for her smile, kind words, sense of humour, and generosity. Her family is very thankful for her numerous caregivers, the Wetaskiwin Dialysis Unit, Rimbey Handi-van volunteer drivers, the Rimbey Hospital and Respite Care, the Rimbey Health Unit and Home Care, the Red Deer Hospital – Unit 31, and so many more… Our angel, our Mutti, Oma and Omi, has left earth and now resides in heaven. Beate will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Lutz (Ina) Lohmann of Hoadley; Jörg (Edelgard) Lohmann of Hoadley; Dieter (Lue-Ann) Lohmann also of Hoadley; Antje (Detlef) Rottmerhusen of Valleyview; and Sigrid (Shaun) Marchand of Leduc; as well as thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers, Wolf (Gerti) Wettberg of Germany; and Karsten (Gisela) Wettberg also of Germany; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Beate was predeceased by her parents, Ilse and Otto Wettberg; and her brothers, Heinz Wettberg, and Jobst Wettberg. A Funeral Service to Celebrate Beate’s Life was held at the Hoadley Hall, Hoadley on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Barry Klassen officiating. • SALLOWS

Our hearts are heavy, but also grateful, as we celebrate the lives of our parents, Robert and Vivian Sallows.” Robert Eugene Sallows, “Bob”, was born on April 15, 1933 to Roy and Lenna Sallows in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, the eldest of six children. Along with his family, he moved to Penticton, B.C. where he graduated high school, worked in the orchards, and enjoyed many sports; especially tumbling and hockey. Bob’s work life began as a power lineman in 1952. He was united in marriage to Vivian Holte on September 4, 1954, and the young couple set up their first home in Rimbey where Bob began his first Assistant District Manager position with Calgary Power. Three children joined the family over the next few years, and many happy memories were made as the family grew together. Advancements in Bob’s career to District Manager required moves to Wetaskiwin, Rockyford, Rimbey, and finally to Calgary in supervisor management divisions for TransAlta Utilities, completing a 38-year career. In each community, Bob was an active volunteer of church boards, Lions Clubs, volunteer fire departments, and other various clubs. Many may remember him as their Boy Scout leader, or as an instructor of hunter training courses. A return to Rimbey for the third time brought them home for their retirement years. Bob loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with a special group of friends. He was especially proud of his family, quietly encouraging them in all their endeavours. Bob gained even more of their admiration as he fought a lengthy, brave journey with Parkinson’s disease; never complaining as the illness brought many difficult and challenging changes. Bob passed away on July 28, 2021, at the age of 88 years, surrounded by family who loved him dearly. Vivian Olga Sallows (nee Holte), “Viv”, was born on October 16, 1934 to Edwin and Inga Holte in Amisk, Alberta, the youngest of three children. She excelled at school, graduating high school at the age of 16 years from the Camrose Lutheran College. Vivian always had a passion for music; singing and leading choirs in high school, then conducting many children and adult choirs. She enjoyed bookkeeping and worked in accounting, medical, and dental offices. Vivian enjoyed volunteer work, and always felt honoured to have been asked to lead a pilot project, which succeeded, and became the Rimbey FCSS. In retirement years, she loved traveling around Central Alberta playing music. Bob always accompanied her, faithfully transporting instruments and sound equipment, always staying to enjoy the music. Whether it was playing along with special friends at care centres, the Rimbey and Bentley Farmer’s Markets, at church, joining jam sessions, or being a member of the West Country Four band, Vivian loved it all. Her slogan was “Happiness is Music”! Vivian and Bob enjoyed traveling to many destinations, but a favourite was the annual road trip, for eleven consecutive years, to the Norsk Høstfest Music Festival in Minot, North Dakota. She was thrilled to play her accordion along with huge groups of fellow accordion players. Vivian was active in the church and had a quiet, strong faith in her Lord. She loved her family, and was always happiest when they gathered together. In June, 2020, Vivian moved into the Rimbey Continuing Care Centre to be with her beloved husband who resided there. She grieved the loss of Bob for just 21 hours before leaving us to join him again, passing away on July 29, 2021, at the age of 86 years, held closely by family who dearly loved her. Bob and Vivian took pride in watching their family grow as they warmly welcomed each new son- or daughter-in-law. They were thrilled when grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived. • TURCHET

It is with very sad hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Giovanni “John” Alfred Turchet of Stauffer, Alberta. He passed away at his home on Monday, July 26, 2021 at the age of 60 years. John began his life on an acreage outside of Calgary. At an early age he learned how to put in a hard day’s work, alongside his dad, Lino. They enjoyed many weekends hunting and spending time together. John loved being outdoors, and that passion to spend time outside continued into his adult life with frequent nature walks and trips out to the bush with his Jeep. In the early 70s, the Turchet family moved to Stauffer because Lino wanted to be a farmer. Together, father and son, they learned how to run a grain and cattle operation. Their land and cattle company expanded to several quarter sections and a decent-sized herd of cattle. John raised his own family on the Stauffer farm. In the early 2000s, John and Lino retired from farming, and John pursued a career as a long-haul truck driver. He always loved the open road, and would take his family on road trips whenever he could. His journeys took him all across Canada and the United States. Wanting to be closer to his family, John then obtained his journeyman heavy-duty mechanic ticket. He outfitted his own mobile mechanic service truck and contracted to various companies in the west Central Alberta area. John was fond of family visits up to the work camps he was quite often based out of. Family meant a lot to him, and he tried to spend as much time as he could with them. This included annual trips to Agri-Trade in Red Deer, George’s Family Restaurant, coffee at the farm, and even a visit to the local meadery with his daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Lucas. During visits to the farm, John would frequently inform Katrina and Lucas of the latest developments in farm machinery. He would always be a farmer at heart. At any time, he was just a phone call or text message away if someone was in need of a helping hand or expert advice. John will be remembered as a gentle, quiet, and kind man who loved his family and did all he could for them. He will be missed greatly. John will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Katrina (Lucas) Lachambre of Bentley; and his two sisters, Mary (Steve) Pool of Calgary; and Barb Lorek (Jim Beckerleg) of Summerland, B.C.; as well as several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many, many cherished friends. John was predeceased by his parents, Lino and Ursula; and two sons, Matthew and Ryan. A Gathering of Family to celebrate John’s Life took place on the family farm at a later date. He will be laid to rest alongside his parents in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clearwater County. If friends desire, memorial tributes in John’s memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. • RATZLAFF

With sadness we mourn the loss of Bruno Ratzlaff of the Rocky Mountain House, Alberta area, who was taken from us on Monday, July 19, 2021 after an intense and unexpected struggle for life. He passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre at the age of 67 years. Those who knew Bruno will forever remember his zest for life, his outgoing personality, and his exuberance for his family and his friends. Bruno began his life on September 2, 1953 at the family home in Acme, Alberta. His family eventually moved to Calgary. Bruno attended the James Fowler High School. He made many life-long friends, several of whom he had recently reconnected with. Bruno attended SAIT in 1975 and began his career in the engineering field, focusing on mechanical systems design for buildings. He had well-respected, successful careers in the private sector, with the Alberta Government and the City of Calgary. Bruno was a passionate man; he never did anything half-way. He loved fishing, hunting, carpentry, and loved the challenge of a house renovation. Bruno and his wife, Linda spent thousands of happy hours together on their quarter section of land near Rocky Mountain House. Hard work was something he thrived on – and Bruno always had a project, or five, on the go! But most of all, he loved to be surrounded by music, his family, and his friends. The West Coast was one of Bruno’s most treasured places. He enjoyed the feel of the ocean, deep-sea fishing, and the many friends Bruno took into his life circle. To close the end of each beautiful day, Bruno loved to watch the sunset; to Bruno it was an event to be savoured to the last minute – which was exactly the way he lived his life! “We will miss you, Bruno.” Bruno will be forever missed by his loving wife, Linda; his brother, Oly; and his sister, Gerda (Sami). He will also be greatly missed by all of his additional family and treasured friends. Bruno was predeceased by his parents, David and Maria; and his brother, Kurt. A Funeral Service in Celebration of Bruno’s Life was held at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5236 – 54 Street, Rocky Mountain House on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Amison officiating. • JAFFRAY

Mrs. Elsie Christine Jaffray of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Monday, June 7, 2021 at the age of 98 years. Elsie was born on March 25, 1923 in Provost, Alberta to Ed and Caroline Johnson. She had three older sisters: Alma, Signe, and Luella. After following her sister, Luella Halvorson to Rimbey, Elsie went to work in a local café. It was here she met Jimmy Jaffray, and they were united in marriage in 1945. Together they farmed in the Lockhart District and raised a family of three sons: Ken, Larry, and Eddie. Elsie loved the farm they called ‘Lingerwood Farm’. She grew a large garden, had her own orchard, and was always preserving and freezing produce. Elsie also enjoyed baking, and there was always coffee and cookies for friends and neighbours when they stopped by for a visit. Being of Norwegian heritage, she made a lot of ‘lefse’ and other treats at Christmas time. After moving to Rimbey in 1990, Elsie would still head out to the farm to pick saskatoons and apples, of which she made juice and fruit leather. A smaller garden in her backyard still produced plenty, and she loved to share with neighbours. Elsie was a member of the Rimbey United Church, and welcomed opportunities to volunteer her time. After Jimmy passed away in 2011, she moved to the Parkland Manor and eventually into Rimbey Long Term Care. The family would like to extend a thank you to the manor and hospital staff for all the care and support Elsie received while she was a resident. Elsie is survived by her two sons, Ken (Kathy) Jaffray of Bluffton; and Larry (Leslie) Jaffray of Rimbey; as well as her cherished grandchildren: Travis (Nicole), Jamie (Greg), Julie (Aaron), Darren (Joan), and Joanne (Bob); and her great grandchildren: Breanna, Chase, Kayla, Cassidy, Hanna, Ken, Kate, Landon, Marley, Troy, and Everly. She also has numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her. Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Jimmy in 2011; her son, Edward in 1971; and her three sisters. A Private Family Funeral Service in Celebration of Elsie’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Marco Ste-Marie officiating. • KREIL

Rick Kreil of Ponoka, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Sunday, July 11, 2021. Rick passed away at the age of 65 years, following a lengthy 42-year battle with multiple sclerosis. Rick was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta on April 21, 1956. He worked in the automotive industry as a shop foreman and service manager for many years. Rick and his co-worker, Dave Sandin won the prestigious ‘Chrysler Troubleshooting Contest’ in the mid 80s, attesting to Rick’s prowess as a very competent mechanic! To this end, he was the service manager at Wilder’s Motors in Ponoka until his health no longer permitted him to work. Rick then resided at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care until his passing. Although Rick was diagnosed with MS when he was only 23 years old, he worked hard and fought a hard fight in his lifetime. In fact, up until the time he had to retire, Rick had received every service award that Chrysler could present him! For a quiet soul, he sure was a lot of fun! Rick was also a people pleaser, almost to a fault at times, as helping other people with their problems always came first before anything he wanted to do for himself. Rick was profoundly admired by his family and friends, and their cherished memories of him will live forever in their hearts. Rick will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his mother, Esther; and two sisters, Melody (Scott) Campbell of Crestomere; and Debbi (Wade) Raugust of Ponoka; in addition to his sister-in-law, Mabel Kreil of Rimbey and her family. He will also be greatly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, many cousins and additional family members, as well as several close friends and his ‘chosen siblings’, Charlie and Sharmayne. Rick was predeceased by his father, Rolly in 2013; an infant brother, Donald; and his older brother, Reg on July 3, 2021. Rick and Reg were always racing in life, but Reg won the race to heaven where he was waiting for a week for Rick to catch up. Rick also leaves behind two children, Mathew and Shannon. As Rick’s passing was expected and imminent, his life was also celebrated by family and friends at his brother, Reg’s memorial service held on Saturday, July 10, 2021. An additional service was not held.
