OUTTEN

It is with great sadness that the family of Roger ‘Ramjet’ Edward Outten, of Gull Lake, Alberta, announces his passing after a brave battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at the age of 74 years.

Roger was born on July 30, 1945 in Brooks, Alberta and grew up in nearby Duchess. He was a seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy, before a 30-year career with the Calgary Fire Department where he retired as a Captain. During his three-year stint in the Navy, Roger met the love of his life, Mary Kathleen Roebuck. They met in Burnaby, British Columbia, and shortly after, in 1964, the pair were united in marriage. Since then they have had many adventures together, including raising their two children, James and Teresa. Roger was a golfer, an unofficial photographer, and a king of chili cook-offs. He was also a capable carpenter and could build, fix, and fabricate just about anything. For the last 15 years, Roger and Mary did exactly what they always wanted to do – they travelled the world together, circumnavigating the globe numerous times while making footprints in 6 of the 7 continents. Roger made an impression on those he met wherever they went, and he leaves behind friends all around the world.

Roger will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, Mary, as they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on December 19, 2019. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughter, Teresa (Rob) Simpson of Leslieville; his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Outten of Stony Plain; five grandchildren: Jennifer, William (Jenilee), Clayton, Joel (Aimee), and Jared; four great grandchildren: Tessa, Isaiah, Audie, and Tyson; as well as his brother, Ron Outten of Saskatchewan; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. Roger was predeceased by his parents, Edith and Thomas; his son, James in 2017; and two sisters, Shirley and Cynthia.

With respect for Roger’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Roger’s Memory may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenue N.W., Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1Z2 (www.albertacancer.ca).
