It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Donald John Noble of Rimbey, Alberta. Donald passed away quietly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the age of 92 years. Born on March 17, 1927 at Acme, Alberta, Donald was the first son born to Wes and Maria Noble. In April, 1934, the family moved from Acme to a quarter of land east of Rimbey. Donald started his schooling at the Delf School in Acme, and finished his education at the Wooddale School near Rimbey. Donald bought the family farm in 1945, and in February of 1952 he was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Evelyn Starozik. This union was blessed with four children: Wayne in 1956, Jim in 1961, Ken in 1963, and Karen in 1965. For many years, Donald was active in the area doing custom brushing and breaking with his brother, Hardy. In the late 1940s he started Don Noble Trucking; hauling lumber, posts, grain, machinery, gravel, and drill mud to well sites, as well as livestock to several auction markets throughout Central Alberta. In 1981, he was even recognized by CFCW radio station as the ‘trucker of the day’! In the late 1940s and 1950s, Donald also did some sawmilling in the winter months, and in the early ‘80s he even obtained a working sawmill and would happily cut wood for his friends and neighbours. In 1989 Donald’s son, Jim moved back to Rimbey to farm alongside his dad, and that continued right to the day of his passing. Cattle had also been a large part of Donald’s life for over 60 years; and in 2007, at the age of 80 years, the decision was made to sell the cattle and continue with a grain and forage operation. Donald could be seen quite often raking hay, hauling bales, or harrowing mole hills. Whether it was fishing and hunting with family, or just being outside on the quad enjoying what the farm had to offer, Donald took great pleasure in being outdoors. He absolutely loved when family and friends stopped by for a visit, and his story-telling and shared experiences of the past were always memorable. Donald’s love of life will be deeply missed. Donald leaves to mourn his passing his loving family, his sons: Wayne (Karen), Jim (Donna), and Ken (Cheryl); and his daughter, Karen (Keith) Kreil; as well as 14 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered by two brothers: Bill (Sadie), and Johnny (Sharon); and three sisters: Joy (Lloyd) Sheils, Jessie (Robert) Gates, and Rosie Smithson (Delbert); in addition to many nieces and nephews, additional relatives, and a host of special friends. Donald was predeceased by his parents, Wes and Maria; his beloved wife, Evelyn; his daughter-in-law, Laurel; his granddaughter, Jenny; his great granddaughter, Rowen; one brother, Hardy; one sister, Evangeline; and several other cherished family members. In heartfelt appreciation, the family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the Rimbey Hospital for every kindness they extended to Donald, and the wonderful care they provided to him during his stay. With respect for Donald’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Donald’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Health Services Donations Program, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre ~ Long Term Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com). • OLSON

Marie Olson of Rimbey, Alberta, 96 years young, passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. She was very special - and her light will forever be missed. Marie was born on March 8, 1923 at Bluffton, into the family of George and Eliza Donnelly. When she was 14 years old, she left home to finish her high school education at St. Joseph’s Convent, a catholic boarding school in Red Deer. Marie attended the Convent for three years. After her graduation, she became a teacher and taught one year at the Dakota School near Crestomere, then one year at the Rutherford School east of Tees. Marie married Richard Olson (or Dick Olson to all who knew him) on December 23, 1944 in Prince George, B.C. Dick was an enlisted man and his company was stationed in Prince George for six months. At that time, Marie worked as a cashier at the Bank of Montreal. At the end of W.W. II, Marie and Dick settled down in the town of Rimbey. They owned Dick’s Garage, a mechanic shop, and raised a family of 14 children on a farm south of Rimbey. Marie excelled at caring for sick or injured children, bookkeeping, managing monster gardens, organizing to-do lists for each child after school, and cooking huge meals for her family and friends. Marie and Dick travelled and camped extensively throughout Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, and the southwest United States for 15 years. Marie found great pleasure in her involvement with the Catholic Women’s League, the Symond’s Ladies Club, Amnesty International, as a tutor for the Canadian Literacy Guild, a treasurer for St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, and a member of the Rimbey Drop-In Centre. She also had a passion for watching baseball games, reading, playing Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, and completing the Weekender crossword puzzle from the Saturday edition of the Edmonton Journal each week. The last eight months of Marie’s life were spent in the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. Even through this trying time, she displayed a tremendous faith in God, a smile for all who visited her, and a thankfulness and respect for her many caregivers. Marie was a treasure who will be missed by all the souls she has touched through her travels in this life. The Olson Family extends a special thank you to Dr. deBruyn and the many caregivers of the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, in Acute Care and Extended Care, who helped to make our “little mother’s” final hospital stay a comfortable one. • BERKENKAMP

Dr. William (Bill) Brodie Berkenkamp died quickly and peacefully at the age of 88 years on March 14, 2019, with his daughter, Christine and son-in-law, Robert at his side. Bill was born on January 30, 1931, and was raised by his father, William (Bill) and mother, Dorothy on the family ranch, now part of Mesa, Arizona. After high school, Bill went to agricultural school intending to take over the family ranch. However, after marrying his wife, Garlo (nee Freestone), Bill was drafted into the US Army for service in the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to university and stumbled upon the microbiology of algae, which led to a life-long passion for science. While attending university, Bill supported his young family by working odd jobs and warehouse night shifts. After graduating from the University of Arizona with his Doctorate in Plant Pathology, he accepted a research position with the Federal Department of Agriculture in Canada. In a decrepit old station wagon, loaded with their possessions, Bill, Garlo, and their children drove to Lacombe, Alberta where he intended “to shoot a moose and a goose” and later return to Arizona for a higher paying job offer. However, in 1972 Bill and Garlo became proud Canadian citizens, and while he did shoot a moose and a goose, Bill nor his family ever returned to live in the USA. During his career, he was internationally cited and served as president of the Canadian Phytopathological Society which published much of his work in the Canadian Journal of Plant Pathology. Bill was an avid naturalist and outdoorsman. He maintained a keen interest in global affairs, the arts, and advancement in science. Following his retirement, Bill and Garlo moved to their property west of Rimbey where he remained active until his death. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Garlo; his son, Dale; and his daughter-in-law, Dawn. He is survived by his son, Brodie Berkenkamp; his daughter, Christine (Robert) Leinweber; his sister, Gayl Foshee; his brother, Steven (Carol) Berkenkamp; and his sister, Jean Dearborn; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces. As per Bill’s wishes, his cremated remains were honored at a private family service. And finally, as was his wish, “he went out with his boots on”. • FEYS

Richard A. Feys of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Acute Care on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the age of 82 years. Richard was born in Rocky Mountain House on February 16, 1936. Richard, “Dick”, attended school in Rocky Mountain House. Well, sort of. It is said he often could be caught playing hooky and spending his time at the train trestle or fishing instead. He did not complete high school and went to work. Richard, with his cousin, Carly Turnquist, got jobs at the Atlas Lumber Yard peeling bark off railroad ties. At about age 18, Richard went to work as a professional truck driver (with the assistance of his uncle, Maurice Feys) driving truck at the Nordegg mine. He worked at the tipple, delivered coal to Nordegg residents, and hauled coal slag. After the mine closure, Dick worked in a lumber camp (Camp 15) and hauled lumber to Rocky to the Atlas yard. He also worked at the Atlas Lumber Yard stacking lumber; and as well, picked up work with local farmers at harvest, shoveling stooks into the separator, and shoveling grain from wagons into granaries. Richard married Joan Kelm in July of 1959. They began their life together in a small trailer first parked at his parent’s farm by Rocky. From there, Richard and Joan moved north and resided in Valleyview and Slave Lake. They had a daughter, Rhonda who arrived in 1969. While there, Richard hauled for the oil companies and eventually came to own his own unit. After 25 years up north, they moved to Blackfalds where he continued to drive for Gibson’s. Richard retired from trucking and he and Joan moved to Rimbey. Retirement was not for him yet so he hauled milk for Alpha Dairies in Red Deer for a short period. Eventually he retired permanently. Through the years whenever possible, Dick would help out at his sister’s farm as well as his niece’s. He enjoyed the farm machinery and being a part of the harvest. Richard had always owned a dog, and most were pointer hunting dogs. His dogs were great companions and a huge love in his life. Throughout his life, Richard spent many hours fishing, hunting, and camping. He loved the West Country and took every opportunity to enjoy it. Richard also purchased a couple of acreages in his later years, and would beautify them and then sell them for a profit. On one such acreage he decided to try his hand at a few cows. Richard purchased six Holsteins, all of which became pets. He would go and spend time with them almost daily. He gave them names and had them following him around like puppies. Richard did eventually give in and sell them, but it was a sad time for him. On another acreage he worked very hard and built a successful u-pick berry farm with saskatoons and raspberries. Richard was a hard worker and enjoyed landscaping and beautifying his properties. Richard will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his two nieces, Cindy (Brian) Martinson of Eckville; and Darlene (Bruce) Walter of Red Deer; his nephew, Lee (Dawn) Stronach of Bentley; and his brother-in-law, Pete Hansinger; as well as several great nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Richard was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Louise (Counnic) Feys of Rocky Mountain House; his daughter, Rhonda in 1985; his beloved wife, Joan in 2004; and two sisters, Marjorie Hansinger of Leslieville; and Ruby (Robert) Stronach of Rocky Mountain House. A Celebration of Richard’s Life will take place in the spring of 2019, of which a date is yet to be determined. Richard will be laid to rest alongside Joan in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Rocky Mountain House. • HARTMAN

Shirley Louise Hartman (nee Knuff) of Hoadley, Alberta, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, friend, entrepreneur, gardener, and community contributor, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family members at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, after a brief illness with leukemia, on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the age of 76 years. Shirley was born on January 11, 1942 in Unity, Saskatchewan, the fourth and final daughter born to her homesteading parents. She became the son her father never had, and it was on the farm that she learned the value of hard work with her dad and grandpa in the fields, and her mom in the farmhouse kitchen. Indeed, Shirley worked hard the entirety of her life. She met her husband, Floyd Hartman – a farm boy from nearby Rockhaven, Saskatchewan – in 1959, and they were married on April 5, 1960. Shirley had a keen interest in business. She worked for the Royal Bank of Canada in Calgary and Okotoks for many years prior to purchasing the Hoadley General Store in 1975. In 1980 Shirley added to their ownership, the grocery store known as Hartman’s Shopright in Winfield, Alberta – complete with an Alberta Treasury Branch agency which she was certified to operate. In 1991, she and Floyd launched Hill’s Power Tongs 1991 Ltd., and Shirley served as the chief executive officer until her passing. Through 25 years in the Alberta oil patch, she was a well-known and respected business woman. Shirley was also a community contributor. For many years, she served as president of the Wetaskiwin constituency of the former Reform Party of Canada, and worked closely with long-time MP Dale Johnson. For the past 40 years, Shirley served as a member of the Hoadley Happy Gang and a board member of the Hoadley Community Hall – often heading up fundraising projects. A central focus for Shirley each spring was an event known as the Alberta Men and Women of Country Music – a day-long music festival held at the Hoadley Hall. For the past 16 years (beginning at age 60), Shirley spearheaded the organizing and promoting of the festival – including catering the Saturday evening meal for all who attended. There was no question she made the best potato salad in the country! The effort Shirley invested in the music festival each year could only be described as ‘Herculean”! She was also a talented musician herself, and played the accordion and piano – often accompanying others. For many years, Shirley led a group of men known as the Hoadley Country Gentlemen who became popular in the community. She was an avid gardener and developed an extensive flower garden at her country home. Shirley enjoyed hosting friends and family members, and delighted in cooking extensive dinners for them, and she became a master at preserving fruits and vegetables – so much so that she had a “canning kitchen” added to her home. Each December, Shirley and Floyd orchestrated the hanging of tens of thousands of lights and ornaments at their home in Hoadley to create a spectacular Christmas festival of lights enjoyed annually by hundreds of people. Shirley was a devoted Christian throughout her life, and was gifted in mentoring people in their Christian faith. In the 1970s, she and Floyd served in a volunteer ministry at the Stoney First Nation at Eden Valley, southwest of Calgary. For decades, they have been active members of the Rimbey New Life Fellowship Church. Above all else, Shirley was generous with her time and finances. She supported numerous charitable causes; ranging from having water wells dug in third-world countries, to homelessness in Canada. Left with an inexpressible absence is Shirley’s cherished family: her loving husband of 58 years, Floyd Hartman; her two treasured children: her son, Kurt (Kim) Hartman; and her daughter, Shelly (Christopher) Bruce; her precious grandchildren: Kristen (Derek) Gully, Zoe Hartman (Corey Legace), Johnnie Hartman, Jackson Alm-Bruce; and Patrick, Nora, Christopher, and Chrisian Bruce; as well as her beloved great grandchildren: Jordyn, Meg, Cora, Nathan, Rebecca, and Kohen; and her dear friend, work mate, and helper, Richele Hjelmeland. Her loss will also be felt deeply by her sisters, Marie Buziak and Verla Erlendson; her brother-in-law, Brent (Shirley) Hartman; and her sisters-in-law: Lynn (Art) Warren, Joanne (Judy Peach) Jowsey, and Bernice (Bob) Kurtz; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews and their families in whom she showed great interest and affection; her many treasured friends, neighbours and business associates; along with her church family at the Rimbey New Life Fellowship Church. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Grace Knuff; her parents-in-law, John and Virginia Hartman; and her sister, Dorothy Price. A Public Funeral Service in Celebration of Shirley’s life was held at the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene, Rimbey on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Reg Darnell officiating. Interment took place immediately after the service in the Hoadley Cemetery, Hoadley, Alberta, with a luncheon and “jam session” following at the Hoadley Community Hall with members of the Alberta Men and Women of Country Music. Everyone was cordially invited to attend. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Shirley’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Food Bank, c/o FCSS, Box 404, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to the charity of one’s choice.
