Our hearts are heavy as we share the passing of Judith “Judy” Elizabeth Frayn (née Reirson) of Rimbey, Alberta. Judy passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the age of 92 years, following a fall and a brief illness. Judy was born on July 14, 1933, at the Bentley Hospital. She was the third youngest of thirteen children born to Hans and Martha Reirson, who lived west of Gilby, Alberta in an area known as Snooseville. Judy’s early years were shaped by humble beginnings, where hard work, resilience, and a strong sense of family were essential. The family endured the loss of four children – experiences that deeply influenced Judy’s strength and compassion. Judy attended school at the Leafland and Medicine Valley Schools, later continuing her education at a boarding school in Red Deer where she completed Grades 10 and 11. Following her schooling, she began working as a ward aide at the Eckville Hospital. During this time, she attended a local dance where she met Arthur Frayn, who was working on a bridge construction crew and was originally from the Consort, Alberta area. Their shared values and connection led to their marriage on January 11, 1952. Together Judy and Art built a loving family, welcoming five children: Sharron in 1953, Tom in 1955, Lana in 1956, Murray in 1959, and Randy in 1964. Over the years, they lived in Gadsby and Calmar, Alberta before settling in Rimbey. In 1964, they moved to their farm in the Leedale area, where they raised their family and created a home filled with warmth, hard work, and lasting memories. Judy and Art later retired to Rimbey in 1993. Retirement brought them great joy through involvement in the community, time spent golfing, winters in Arizona, and, most importantly, cherished moments with their growing family. Judy will be lovingly remembered by her children: Sharron (Leroy) of Bentley, Tom (Elaine) of Rimbey, Lana (Bryan) of Rimbey, and Murray of Gull Lake; as well as her daughter-in-law Sheila of Rimbey. She also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-five great-grandchildren (with another expected in September); along with three stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren, all of whom were a great source of pride and joy in her life. Judy is also survived by two sisters-in-law Elvey Brown of Calgary and Pat Frayn of Red Deer; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband Art; her beloved son Randy; and all of her siblings. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care Judy received over the years from Dr. Rylance, the Valley View Manor and Rimbey Home Care staff, and the Rimbey Hospital team who supported her in her final days. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Judy’s Life will be held at the Rimbey United Church, 4931 – 51 Avenue, Rimbey on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverend Ray Goodship officiating. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judith “Judy” Ellen Smith, of Rimbey, Alberta, who peacefully entered into rest at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the age of 84 years. Judy was born on July 6, 1941, to John and Shirley Mustard, in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She was the oldest of three children and lived a very simple and quiet life in which she was an amazing wife and mother. Judy was a voracious reader and would always have a book in her hands. She also had a fantastic memory and knew dates that most people would forget about. Wherever Vera and her husband Bernard lived, they seemed to be loved greatly. After Bernard’s death, Vera lived in Calgary and Grande Prairie before returning back to Rimbey. She became “Mom” and “Grandma” to many adults and children alike… and often stated, “the more the merrier!” Vera liked to knit, crochet, and sew. She made blankets, quilts, knitted afghans, slippers, and socks. Most of what she created, Vera lovingly gave away. Many people have been the lucky recipients of her talents. Vera seldom missed her morning devotions. She read God’s word and prayed for her family and friends. When there was a prayer need, you could count on Vera to pray. And God seemed to listen and act. “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” Matthew 25:21 Vera is survived and greatly missed by her children: Greg (Bev), Douglas (Shelly), Bonnie Mae, Jack (Brenda), and Julie (Victor); as well as being dearly loved by her fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Joyce (Garry) Myers and Donna (Ernie) Schock; in addition to all her nieces and nephews. Vera was predeceased by her loving husband, Bernard Webb; her granddaughter, Katrina Webb; her parents, George and Irene Hunter; her brother, Donald Hunter; her grandparents, Merton and Phena Challand; and her brother- and sister-in-law, Adrian and Thelma Resta. A Funeral Service in Celebration of Vera’s Life will be held at the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene, 5214 – 51 Street, Rimbey on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Reg Lartec and Pastor Doug Webb officiating. ~ Service and Live-Stream Update ~ It is with profound sadness that we announce that Olevia Sophia “Sonja” McAlpin of Parkland Beach at Gull Lake, Alberta passed away peacefully, with the loving support of family and friends at her side, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the age of 72 years. Her obituary notice, written by Sonja herself... “If you are reading this story, you already know the ending. Let me tell you a little about my wonderful life… I was born in Holland on November 28, 1953. I immigrated to Canada in 1956 with my parents, my older brother, and my younger brother. We lived in Red Deer, Alberta until 1971, when I moved away to pursue my nursing career. From 1974 until 1997, I worked at the Calgary General Hospital in the Emergency Room Department as a trauma nurse. I loved this atmosphere, as the pace was fast and you never knew what was coming through the doors. In this time, I also flew a couple of STARS Air Ambulance flights, but I kind of think I was puking more than the patient was! These were experiences I never forgot! From the emergency room, I moved to cancer care at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, and then to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre in Red Deer for an additional 15 years. I believe I found my calling there, and I hope my care of cancer patients helped them through some of the most difficult times of their lives. After I retired, I enjoyed staying active and became a Marriage Commissioner, and later in 2019, I obtained my certification as a Funeral Celebrant. I always joked that I could either marry you or bury you! I enjoyed my retirement immensely and kept very busy. I married my best friend, Phil, on January 24, 1976, in Red Deer on a cold winter’s day at –27 degrees. It was so cold! Our union was blessed with two sons, in addition to my three beautiful grandchildren. In our younger years, Phil and I travelled to many beautiful places: Africa, Rome, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, the Galápagos Islands, the Dominican Republic, and the Amazon River, along with many unforgettable islands along the way. I have also been very fortunate to have made many friends that have touched my heart over the years. My deepest thanks to each of you who have made this journey with me – and have made it bearable this last while. I would like to especially thank my family, as well as Dr. Rylance and the all the staff at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. Thank you also to Laverne and Michelle for the opportunity to work with you, and your friendship.” Sonja will be lovingly remembered by her husband of almost 50 years, Phil; her sons Greg (Kathleen) McAlpin of Airdrie; and Donny (Lisa) McAlpin of South Surrey, BC; as well as three precious grandchildren, Natalyia, Ellie, and Ava. She will also be lovingly remembered by her siblings Chris (Cindy) de Jong of Swift Current, Saskatchewan; Bill (Shirley) de Jong of Airdrie; Winnie (Ben) Huisman of Bowden; and Arne de Jong of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many good friends. Sonja was predeceased by her parents Arie and Freda de Jong. A Celebration of Sonja’s Life will be held at the Keyera Place Community Centre (formerly the Peter Lougheed Community Centre), 5109-54 Street, Rimbey on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Marco Williams-Ste-Marie officiating. - STRAIN
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our brother, dad, and uncle, Shane Michael Strain, of Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the age of 55 years. Shane was born on March 16, 1971, to Lloyd and Loretta Strain, and grew up on the family farm in the Hoadley, Alberta area. From a young age he was immersed in the game of hockey, where he truly excelled. Shane could be found at every pond, lake, or outdoor rink around – anywhere that there was ice and a puck. He loved his friends and never struggled to make them. Shane spent countless hours outdoors with his buddies riding anything with two wheels – nothing with four legs! Growing up on a farm gave him the ability to fix almost anything. If he broke it, Shane could fix it – and he broke a lot of things along the way. Shane chose to begin working at a young age, heading into the oilpatch at just 16 years old. He worked various jobs before finding his place on a drilling rig. Shane’s career took him to many different countries, and he always returned home with great stories to tell and pictures to share. He was immensely proud of his work as a drilling consultant for many years. Shane was also passionate about fishing, skiing, golfing, and camping. He especially loved taking family and friends on trips to the Fraser River in B.C. Shane was the happiest when he was out on the water or in his ice fishing shack – and one thing he certainly knew how to do, was catch fish! Shane often reflected on the many special moments he shared with his daughter, whom he loved more than anything. They spent treasured time together on ski trips, fishing adventures, camping excursions, and caring for their beloved pets. Shane leaves behind his daughter; his brother Darrell (Karen), niece Tracy (Pete), and nephew Tyler (Noelle); and his sister Shauna (Rob), and nieces Abigail and Chloe; along with his great-nieces and great-nephews Brynley, Hunter, Declan, and Hadley; as well as numerous other relatives and close friends. The family would also like to acknowledge his lifelong buddies Jamie, Danny, and Steve; his special friend Gem; and his friends Darry and Brooklyn. Shane was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Loretta Strain. “Shane will be forever in our hearts and always remembered for his mischievous antics, his great sense of humour, and his warm smile.” With respect for Shane’s wishes, no public funeral service will take place. A private family service will be held at a later date. If friends desire to make memorial tributes, donations in Shane’s memory may be made directly to the Alberta Conservation Association, Box 336, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta T4T 1A3 (www.ab–conservation.com). - KARLSTROM
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Larry Evert Karlstrom of Bluffton, Alberta. He left us unexpectedly on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the age of 76 years, to go and be with his wife Helen once again – the love of his life and best friend – who he missed greatly. We know they are back together and smiling down on us. We now have two amazing, loving guardian angels watching over us all. Larry’s greatest loves of his life were his wife, daughters, son-in-law, and very precious granddaughters – that had grandpa wrapped around their little fingers, and he enjoyed every second. Larry was born in Rimbey, Alberta on September 15, 1949, to Enid and Evert Karlstrom. He grew up and lived his whole life on the farm in the Springdale area. Larry attended school in Bluffton, and upon finishing school he ventured north to the Northwest Territories and operated a CAT during the winter. Larry married the love of his life, Helen Simpson, in 1973. They were married for almost 51 years when she was taken too early in 2024. In Helen’s words, “we had an amazing life together,” which Larry agreed with… missing her every day until he joined her again. After they were married, Larry bought a gravel truck and started hauling gravel. They pulled a trailer, that they lived in, behind a gravel truck and travelled around northern Alberta to do gravel-hauling jobs. Later, Larry, his dad, and his brothers started a gravel-crushing company. Larry and Helen put a place on his parents’ farm, where they lived together for the rest of their lives. They had four daughters, which were Larry’s pride and joy. When people would ask him, “Don’t you wish you had a son?” Larry’s reply was always, “Nope.” He loved his daughters dearly, and he was the very best dad they could have asked for. Larry was a very talented man; he could fix and build anything. He was a self-taught mechanic, regular and heavy duty, as well as a welder. Anything that needed fixed, Larry knew or could figure out how to fix it. He really could do anything… there wasn’t much he couldn’t figure out! Larry also felt it was important for his girls to know how to change a tire or check and change the oil in their vehicles – a skill they all still possess. After they graduated, all his daughters had the pleasure of calling their dad their boss, as they also worked on the crusher and operated the equipment. During this time, they really got to know their dad much better. Larry taught his daughters how to operate loaders and stockpiling trucks, as well as helping to fix the equipment and crusher. He was the best boss and dad in the world. Larry loved to be outdoors; hunting, fishing, and trips to the mountains where he would roll down the window to breathe the fresh mountain air. His favourite part of Christmas was the Christmas tree and the Christmas tree hunt; something he enjoyed doing with his daughters, and when they were old enough, his granddaughters too. They would head out into the bush and find an amazing Christmas tree and each morning when he got up, Larry would turn on the lights on the tree. Larry and Helen also went to all their daughters’ sports tournaments while they were in school, and when their girls got older, they attended all their ball games and tournaments. They were their daughters’ biggest fans and were always there to support and cheer them on no matter what the girls were doing. Larry loved to listen to music and whistle along, and in the last few months he enjoyed drumming along to the music, especially BTO (Bachman–Turner Overdrive). Larry was always there to help his family whenever they needed it. In the words of his youngest brother, “Larry was a great husband, dad, grandpa, and brother.” No truer words can be said to describe him. He didn’t say much, but those who got the chance to know and love him were very lucky. Larry is already greatly missed by his daughters, son-in-law, very precious granddaughters, and his brothers. He was predeceased by his wife Helen in 2024. With respect for Larry’s wishes, there will be no service. The family of Mario Ruperto Castro Avendaño, of Rimbey, Alberta, is saddened to announce the passing of their beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, and friend on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the age of 84 years. Born in Chile, Mario met and married the mother of his children. He was blessed with two beautiful children, a son and a daughter. In 1975, they moved to Calgary, Alberta where they raised their children. Mario loved going camping with his family. They would go in their camper as often as they could, getting away from the hectic daily activities to enjoy some peace and relaxation. Mario also enjoyed going fishing, especially with his son, even if it was only for a few hours. When his son and daughter grew up, they both had three beautiful children with their spouses. Mario’s oldest granddaughter would make him a great-grandfather with three adorable children. He was proud of his family and loved spending time with them, always looking forward to visiting them and their dogs. In 2000, Mario met and fell in love with Teresa. They enjoyed going to jam sessions, dancing, and spending time with friends. They were married in 2007, spending 26 years together. Mario enjoyed the times spent with Teresa’s two daughters and their spouses. He welcomed their four children with open arms and was honoured to be a great-grandfather to their two adorable children. To escape Canadian winters, they would travel to Chile where Mario had lots of extended family. It brought him great pleasure, and he was always happiest when it was time to go to Chile. His dream was to retire and move back home. Mario worked several years in the construction industry, being a part of many projects; such as the Saddledome, Sikome Lake, and numerous others. He was also part of the team responsible for the construction of the big T-Rex in Drumheller, Alberta. This is something his grandchildren took great pride in letting their friends know. Whether hosting a house party with family and friends or going out to the club, Mario loved dancing. “When someone you love becomes a memory, The memory becomes a treasure. Don’t cry because it is over, Smile because it happened. Until we meet again.” With respect for Mario’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. - JENNER
With sadness we announce the passing of George Ian Jenner of Rimbey, Alberta on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 74 years. He was an amazing husband, dad, grandpa, and papa who was affectionately known as “Papa Squarehead.” Born in Penticton, B.C., George was a heavy-duty mechanic in the automotive industry for most of his life. Those who knew of him, thought him to be a no-nonsense, straight to the point, and blunt man that could come off as slightly abrasive. Haha! To those who knew George, were close to him, or who loved or were loved by him, would describe him as a pillar of strength who had a profound love and unending compassion for his family. He possessed a soft heart and a deep fondness for animals as well, especially dogs. He also showed an interest and curiosity in anything antique, or anything with history and a story to tell. George made it seem like there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do! Even with one good arm for most of his adult life, he built and restored houses, built award–winning hot rod cars, and was a mechanic, carpenter, plumber, electrician, farmer, roofer… and the list could go on and on. He could literally fix anything! George even mastered “The Floss” – a Fortnite dance he quickly learned when challenged by the grandkids. “He will be greatly missed and will live on in our hearts and in our minds every day… always.” George is survived by his wife Deanna; his three children Darren (Treena), Carrie (Trent), and Jackie (Reeve); as well as his cherished grandchildren Dani, Emery, Keelee, Trey, Flynn, and Kyra. He is also survived by his brother Dale (Ruth); in addition to many nieces and nephews, other family members, and several close friends. George was predeceased by his parents, John and Sadie; and his siblings Jim, Daryl, and Janet. A private informal gathering to Celebrate George’s Life will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Central Alberta Humane Society, 4505 – 77 Street, Red Deer, Alberta T4P 2J1 (www.cahumane.com). - KOWALZIK
With sadness we announce the passing of Neva Lorraine Goldie Kowalzik of Rimbey, Alberta. Neva passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the age of 92 years. Neva was born in the Lockhart District to Lawrence and Margaret (née Cummings) Calkins. She became a dedicated farmer’s wife in 1952, marrying John Kowalzik. Neva nurtured a large garden in order to feed their growing family: Jack (1950), Yvonne (1951), Richard (1956), Keith (1961), and Terri (1968). In the sixties they were fortunate to receive a dairy license, and the good times started as they built a large modular home to house their five lovely children, who turned out to be hard-working, successful people. Everything was perfect until Johnie developed lung cancer and died at the age of 47 years. Two years later, Neva lost her son Keith. She relied on her grit to get through those difficult times. Eventually, Neva sold the farm and moved back into Rimbey where she became an active community member and built the lovely home she lived in until recently. She gradually became the matriarch of the Calkins clan and the Kowalzik family. Neva lived an amazing 92 years. Neva is survived by her partner Erling “Earl”; her sons Jack and Richard (Meredith); and her daughters Yvonne (Allan) and Terri (Terry); as well as her brother Trevor (Maureen). She was also blessed with eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren and their pictures adorned many of the walls in her home. Neva was predeceased by her husband John in 1977; her partner Jack Knowles; her son Keith in 1979; brother Dale in 2021; and a grandson Kyle in 1993. - HANSEN
Elaine Ann Hansen of Rimbey, Alberta went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care, just days before her 82nd birthday. Her life was a testimony of faith, love, and unwavering devotion to God. “Her life’s journey was not always easy, but her destination is perfect.” Elaine was born in High River, Alberta to Frank and Jean Hansen. She spent her early childhood on the family farm near Blackie, Alberta before moving in the spring of 1952 to the family farm west of Three Hills, Alberta. Elaine attended the Blackie School, then the Allingham School until its closure, and continued her education at the Torrington School, where she graduated. Following graduation, Elaine worked in Three Hills and Red Deer before entering nursing school in Lamont, Alberta, where she trained as a registered nurse. Her nursing career took her across Alberta, British Columbia, Oregon (USA), and the United Kingdom. Elaine later pursued further education at St. Stephen’s University in New Brunswick, continuing to grow both professionally and spiritually. Yet beyond all her accomplishments, Elaine’s greatest passion was to serve her Lord. She lived out her faith daily – through acts of kindness, caring for others, offering comfort to the hurting, and faithfully sharing the message of the Gospel. Elaine was known for her generous spirit and servant’s heart. She opened her life to others, often providing care and support to those in need, including hospice care. Whether with family, friends, or strangers, Elaine sought to be a light for Christ – bringing warmth, encouragement, and hope wherever she went. Her joyful presence will be remembered through her infectious laugh, her ever-present candies and treats she loved to share, her deep love for her dogs, and her readiness to speak about her faith. Time spent with Elaine – whether in large family gatherings or quiet visits – was always marked by love, laughter, and a gentle reflection of God’s grace. Elaine will be lovingly remembered by her brothers Ernie (Marg) Hansen of Calgary and Bill Hansen of Rimbey; her sisters Frances Simpson (Martin Reedyk) of Three Hills and Connie Hansen of Rimbey; as well as thirteen nieces and nephews; twenty-one great-nieces and great-nephews; and many extended family members and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Jean Hansen; and her brother Alfred. “Elaine will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her family rejoices in the assurance that she is now at peace in the presence of her Lord, whom she faithfully served throughout her life.” The family would like to thank all the caring staff – which includes all doctors and nurses, as well as all the staff in housekeeping, laundry, dietary, and maintenance at the Drumheller Care Centre, Rimbey Home Care, and in Long Term Care at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, for helping look after Elaine with compassion and support along her life’s journey. Joe Winowich of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care, on the evening of Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Born in rural Saskatchewan, Joe lived a long life of 85 ½ years. He was a talented drywall finisher for most of his life, continuing to work full time until the age of 79 years, when his health began to fail and he was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Before the disease officially took hold of him, Joe suffered as all have before him, with the personal loss of his abilities. Joe spent the last two years of his life residing at Rimbey Long Term Care, and with the love and support of the amazing staff there, he began to have a sense of peace within himself again. They kept everything calm and loving for him, as well as for many others. If Joe still had the ability to have a conversation, he would have enjoyed each of you immensely as his friends! Thank you very much to all the staff for being the kind and caring people that you are! Joe has now joined his friends and family that have passed before him, with the peacefulness that was compassionately provided to him. We believe he is finally able to see, smell, and touch all things again – Joe is able to enjoy and become excited with these old – “new” sensations! “Rest in peace, Dad, and thank you Lord God for taking our dad home! Amen.” Joe is survived by his family: daughter Jodine of Saskatchewan; daughter Debbie (Brian) of Alberta; son Michael of Newfoundland; and two stepsons Michael and Matthew, both of Ontario. With deep sadness we announce the passing of Robert “Rob” Clifford Budd of Bluffton, Alberta. Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the age of 68 years. Rob was born in Camrose, Alberta on April 4, 1957. Following his schooling, he worked in the oilfield industry on oil rigs before finding employment with the Department of Transportation in Lacombe. Rob transitioned into working for Lacombe Fertilizer, a job he took pleasure in for the next 18 years. He then began a career as a chemical distribution manager for United Agri Products, and enjoyed the task of getting chemical to the agricultural businesses throughout Alberta. However, Rob’s greatest passion for the last 29 years was as a school bus driver. He thoroughly appreciated the challenges and adored the kids. Upon retirement, Rob found a new passion – race cars! He loved his get-togethers with his support group, and enjoyed any day spent at the races as a spectator at Central Alberta Raceways. The girls spoiled him there! Rob’s greatest love of all was for his family. He had fun rekindling with all of his cousins from the Budd side of his family this past summer. He really delighted in seeing everyone and was thankful for that time together. Most of all, Rob cherished any time spent with his three children. He loved them dearly and was immensely proud of them all. He was always so happy to see his grandkids – treasuring their hugs and hearing the word, ‘grandpa’. Rob built their farm, house, fencing… and truly was a handyman of all the trades. He loved reading and figuring out plans for building things and other pending projects around the yard. There was always a project on the go. Rob also took satisfaction in his puzzles; and for his wife, he especially enjoyed the fun of making little house structures and enacting his designs for intricate fairy gardens. Actually, there were plans for a lot of things… and there was never a moment for boredom! Rob took pleasure in teasing people, he always had a joke to tell, and he possessed an enthusiastic sense of humour. He always took time to enjoy camping, reading, and his faithful, furry partner, Tigger, who misses him dearly. Rob leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Sheila; his loving children: two daughters Angela Budd and Bobby–jo (Brant) Stickel; and his son Christopher (Kelly) Budd; as well as ten grandchildren and one great-grandson. He also leaves behind his sister Rita (John) Jackson of Gwynne, Alberta; his brother Stephen (Kelly) Budd of Ponoka; his sister-in-law Peggy Mueller of Langley, B.C.; in addition to many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends. Rob was predeceased by his father Clifford; his mother Patricia; two brothers-in-law Norman Mueller and Larry Nachtegaele; and his parents-in-law Victor and Charlesena Nachtegaele. With respect for Rob’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 ( www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com ). - ALBERS
The lake was his sanctuary, animals were his friends, and quiet mornings with a fishing rod in his hand was his passion. On Friday, January 16, 2026, we said a sad goodbye to Mark Wayne Albers of Bentley, Alberta; a man whose heart belonged to his family and friends, his many furry companions, and to the beauty of the outdoors. He passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, with his family by his side, at the age of 65 years. Mark was born in Lacombe, Alberta on June 23, 1960, to Carol and George Albers. He attended school in Lacombe and eventually entered the workforce in the transportation industry as a safety advisor. One of Mark’s greatest accomplishments that he was most proud of, was achieving his Occupational Health and Safety Certificate. Through the University of Alberta, Mark completed this course on weekends and in any spare moment he had, while also working full time. He continued to further his education by completing courses to obtain his Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation. Mark loved fishing, and absolutely everything about it, sharing this enthusiasm and excitement with his wife Tammy. They loved their time together fishing, camping, and enjoying the outdoors. Just recently, Mark was also learning the logistics behind flying remote airplanes. Alongside his grandson, Felix, they spent quality time together flying these planes… although not always successfully! Mark often encountered trouble with his landings; and as a matter of interest, one of his remote airplanes disappeared while in flight. Despite a thorough search… several times… the plane has never been found – causing Mark to affectionately name the plane, “Amelia”. “Mark’s patient and compassionate heart, his love for family and friends, nature, and animals, and his kind, gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.” Mark will be lovingly remembered by his wife and high school sweetheart of 49 years, Tammy; his daughter Christi Manicke and son-in-law David; his cherished grandson and fishing buddy, Felix; and his cats Linus and Tigger. He will also be remembered by his mother Carol Albers of Lacombe; his siblings: Marvin, Wanda (Darrell Salewski), Lonie (Rhonda), Jackie (Don Healing), and Dawn (Chris Aikenhead); in addition to his parents-in-law Miles and Violet Palmer; his brothers-in-law Todd Palmer (Linda) and Paul Palmer (Delphi); his sister-in-law Susie Albers (Mike Stegmann); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, past co-workers, and many good friends. Mark was predeceased by his father George Albers. In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 11, 2026, with a warm chinook wind blowing, Kelly Edward Bundt of Bluffton, Alberta quietly and comfortably slipped from the world at the age of 65 years, surrounded by those who loved him. He was content and cared for in his own bed at home. Born the third child of Carl and Dolores Bundt, Kelly’s life began on March 22, 1960, in Carroll, Iowa in the United States. Shortly before his first birthday, the family moved north and settled near Bottrel, Alberta. Kelly attended the Westbrook School in his early years, then went on to high school in Cochrane. In these years, Kelly – “The Reverend”, created so many friendships and bonds that lasted his entire lifetime. Following high school, Kelly went to work for Spray Lake Sawmills. In the early ‘80s Kelly met Joan, and before long they moved back to the farm at Bottrel, where they raised their four sons. Once Kelly’s boys were raised, he moved north to Bluffton and went to work for Castle Building Supplies in Sylvan Lake, a company and crew he appreciated working with. Not long after moving to Bluffton, Kelly and Kim were married and raised two more sons and a daughter, and they always had an open door for the dozens of neighbourhood kids over the past decade. “The Reverend” loved get-togethers. He also possessed the unique gift of being a great storyteller. Kelly could captivate his audience, animating any story within the first few sentences. His laugh echoed in any room, and it would surely bring a smile to your face! Kelly enjoyed any time spent with family. He also took pleasure in the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. Kelly had a soft place in his heart for the forgotten and unloved… and would offer anything to help. Kelly retained an unwavering connection to the past and truly loved his people. With such sorrow in our hearts, we had to say goodbye to our loving son and brother. Dustin John McLaughlin passed away suddenly in Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the age of 36 years. Dustin was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on July 4, 1989, where he resided with his mother and sister until he was two years old. They then relocated to Drumheller, Alberta and his family grew with the addition of his dad, a brother, and another sister. At the age of six years, Dustin gained another brother. The family moved several times before finally settling in Rimbey, Alberta, where Dustin completed some of his schooling and then joined the workforce. At a young age, Dustin did not like to be confined – he needed to be free. You knew immediately… evident from all the times he escaped his crib, the backyard, or got out of the house. Once he was outside, he was gone! He was either down the street or out in the backyard where he liked to play… he simply loved to be outside. Once Dustin was older, he couldn’t wait to leave home and go to the city where he could be free to pursue whatever he felt was worth pursuing; whether it was work, hanging out with his friends, or catching the eye of a pretty girl. Dustin found his calling in carpentry. He really loved to help build homes, and his family was so proud of him when he pointed out all the homes he had helped build. Dustin also enjoyed listening to music and he valued spending time with his friends. He touched the hearts of all those he met. Dustin is survived by his mother Patty McLaughlin and father Glenn Cormack; as well as his daughter Ameliah, son Axel, and son Ryler. His is also survived by his sister Christine (née McLaughlin) Turner (Micah), and their family Asher, Ameliah, and Abigail; his brother Mitchell Cormack (Anna), and their family Shande and Anastasia; his sister Michelle (née Cormack) Bascom (Mike), and their family Phoenyx and Falcon; and his brother Jesse Cormack (Nicole Baxter). Dustin was predeceased by his grandfather Martin McLaughlin and grandmother Gail McLaughlin. Dustin will be extremely missed… and no words can describe the pain in our hearts. When Tomorrow Starts Without Me By David Romano When tomorrow starts without me And I am not here to see If the sun should rise and find your eyes Are filled with tears for me I wish so much you wouldn’t cry The way you did today While thinking of the many things We didn’t get to say I know how much you love me As much as I love you And each time you think of me I know you’ll miss me too But when tomorrow starts without me Please try to understand That an angel came and called my name And took me by the hand And said my place was ready In heaven far above And that I’d have to leave behind All those I dearly loved But when I walked through Heaven’s gate I felt so much at home When God looked down and smiled at me From his great golden throne He said this is eternity And all I promised you Today your life on earth is past But here it starts anew I promise no tomorrow For today will always last And since each day’s the same way There’s no longing for the past So when tomorrow starts without me Don’t think we are far apart For every time you think of me I’m right here in your heart With respect for Dustin’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held at this time. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. *PRE-RECORDED VIDEO DETAILS UPDATED* With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Travis Dean Jaffray of Rimbey, Alberta, a devoted husband, loving father, beloved son, adored brother, and treasured friend, who left us far too soon at the age of 51 years. Travis passed away from an aneurysm at the descending aorta on Saturday, September 27, 2025, while checking his wheat fields on his side-by-side with his dog Chip. Travis was born on July 11, 1974, and raised southwest of Rimbey on the farm his grandpa, Jimmy Jaffray, homesteaded in 1946. He attended school in Rimbey, where he made lifelong friends, played volleyball and basketball, and participated in 4–H. After graduation, Travis attended the DeVry Institute of Technology in Calgary with his friend Byron Danser, where he made more lifelong friends. In 1995, he received his Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology. Travis worked for six months in Edmonton and quickly realized he wanted to be back together with all his friends in Calgary. He went to work on offshore directional drilling rigs from 1997 to 1999, providing real-time drilling data with the latest drilling and computer technology. In 1999, Travis bought into a start-up company, Subnet Solutions Inc. in Calgary. His professional career included many titles over the years: SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) automation and controls lead, cyber security specialist, SCADA architect, solution sales, regional and sales manager, and senior integration specialist. Travis spent 80% of the time travelling for work, mostly in the United States. Whenever he was home from work you could find Travis hanging out with all his friends camping, Calgary stampeding, dirt biking, and being a groomsman or best man for all his friends’ weddings. Travis married the love of his life, Nicole Fox of Delburne, Alberta, on May 30, 2009, and they welcomed their first child, Breanna Marie, on March 29, 2011. On April 28, 2012, Travis and Nicole moved from Red Deer into the dream home they designed and had built on the Jaffray homestead, where Travis’s grandparents had lived and where Travis had been raised in the same yard. On April 11, 2013, Travis delivered his son, Chase Nolan, at home. Their family was complete with the birth of Kayla Christine on August 18, 2015. In 2014, Travis decided that living a life with less stress and being with his family was most important, and he sold his shares at Subnet and “retired” at the age of 40 years. His love of the farm, learning and problem solving, led to the rebirth of Lingerwood Farms as he decided to try his hand at raising Black Angus cows, which went on to include sheep and pigs. Travis also started Hometown IT with Phil Swanson, providing tech services out of Rimbey. He researched and helped to complete grant applications for fibre optics to be put into rural communities in Central Alberta. Travis’s love for the technology industry, and with previous colleagues and industry leaders seeking him out, in 2015 he started to do contract work for various companies within Alberta. He made a tremendous impact as a power automation specialist, mentoring many engineers, and connecting substations to solar power in Joffre and Drumheller, Alberta. Travis also wanted to give back to the community, joining the Rimbey Kinsmen Club in 2012. He served in all club positions, including club president, where he helped to raise money for the skateboard park, purchase chairs for the playschool, basketballs for the school, and bursaries for graduating students. Travis also served on the board of Central Alberta Raceways, volunteering many hours to the development of the tracks, as well as racing. Busy with contract work and wanting more time to spend with family, Travis and Nicole decided in December, 2023 to sell their cow/calf operation. With a feeling of pride and accomplishment, as Dean Edge sold their cattle for top dollar as buyers commented on how good they looked, another goal was met. Meanwhile, Travis had started to do some grain farming in 2020, and in 2023 decided to expand. He upgraded his combine, tractor, seeder, sprayer, purchased another combine, in addition to building a 70 x 130 machine shed. More than anything else, Travis’s love for his family was undeniable. He was a dance dad, a hockey dad, and a supportive husband. Travis and Nicole had a marriage that was lived with intention, and together they created memories to last a lifetime that included family vacations, camping, hosting many Christmas and New Year celebrations, card parties, and firepit gatherings with friends and family. His infectious smile will be forever remembered by all. Travis will be deeply missed and his memory cherished always in the hearts of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Nicole; their children Breanna (14), Chase (12), and Kayla (10); his parents Larry and Leslie Jaffray of Rimbey; and his sister Jamie (Greg Baas) of Calgary. He is also survived by his parents-in-law David and Phyllis Fox of Delburne; his sisters-in-law Dianna (Jay Redmond) of Nova Scotia and Patricia (Phil Laurie) of Tofield, Alberta; and his brother-in-law Albert Fox (Michaela) of Delburne; as well as several nieces and nephews. Travis will be lovingly remembered by lifelong school friends; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Travis’s Life will be held at the Keyera Place Community Centre (formerly the Peter Lougheed Community Centre), 5109-54 Street, Rimbey on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Mr. Dean Edge hosting. Travis loved pies! In lieu of flowers or cards, please feel free to bring a pie to share with others during the luncheon. Pie was his favourite dessert! If desired, memorial donations may be made directly to the Kinsmen Club of Rimbey, Box 97, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. Mark passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 4, 2025, after a short and unexpected battle with cancer. To describe Mark’s complex and yet simple life would be almost impossible. - FRIES
After a brief disagreement with gravity, Ronald Edward Fries of Winfield, Alberta, age 79 years, everybody’s favourite human (either to love or to hate) passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, surrounded by a handful of those who loved him. Ron was born on January 14, 1946, the youngest of five children born to Ralph and Lillian Fries. He grew up in the Nanton, Alberta area and lived a life full of more stories than could be believed. Ron attended school in Nanton and Rimbey. At the behest of local law enforcement, Ron may or may not have left town to cool his heels in Kitimat, B.C. and other locations as a young man. He eventually returned to Nanton where he would meet a young Hope Florence and begin his job with the Mosquito Creek School Division, building cabinetry and furniture for all the schools in the area. Ron completed his journeyman carpentry apprenticeship at SAIT in 1979-80. Because he couldn’t get any time off work to go hunting, but was allowed time off for a honeymoon – Ron and Hope were wed in November 1976. Eventually they divorced in 1992, to the shock of nobody who knew them. Looking for a fresh start of sorts, Ron followed Cupid’s arrow to Winfield in 1998 to live with Sue and her family. They had no idea what they were in for. In the years since, Ron lived a (relatively) quiet life; farming, hunting, drinking coffee with friends at the feed store, and doing whatever the hell he wanted. He enjoyed many things. Among those things were: hunting, fishing, drinking, smoking, fist fights, playing cards, spending time outdoors, horseshoes, shooting, teasing his grandkids, and spending time with family on the farm. Ron is lovingly remembered by his daughters Lynnette (Dave), Jody (Brett), Jackie (Michael); his overly-patient partner Sue and her family, Aaron (Heather), Trudy (Kelly), and Elisha (David); as well as grandchildren Hailey, Alex, Kaiden, Emmeline, Ethan, Austin, Jade, Rylie, Aubree, and Cohen. He is also lovingly remembered by his brother Albert (Gail) Fries; and sister Carolyn Hoffarth; in addition to more nieces, nephews, cousins, kin and kindred than can fit within a reasonable character limit. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Loraine Gazdag, and brother Claire Fries. Rusty could not be happier to have his favourite human by his side once again. A gathering of family and friends in Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at the Winfield Agriplex – Main Hall, 401 – 6 Street East, Winfield on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A second gathering will take place at the Kozy Korner Seniors Centre, 2211 – 20 Street, Nanton on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider instead an option from the list below: Have a drink Play a game of crib or smear Build an irresponsibly high bonfire Eat too much of a meal and complain about it, then continue to eat a little bit more Pass gas, followed by one of the following phrases: “There’s a kiss for you”, or “I think I heard a buck snort.” Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. - CARRUTHERS-JOHNSON
With sadness we announce the passing of Miriam Doreen Carruthers-Johnson (née Baur) of Red Deer, Alberta; a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Miriam passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 86 years. Miriam was born on September 20, 1939, in Edmonton, Alberta to Hans and Lydia (née Hahn) Baur, and was raised in the greater Edmonton area. She was united in marriage to Al Carruthers on November 2, 1957, and together they raised four daughters, four sons, and over twenty-five foster children throughout the years. While raising their family, they resided in Edmonton, Red Deer, and Blackfalds before finally settling in Sylvan Lake. Miriam and Al were involved in many business ventures together during their marriage, including: several construction projects, owning rental properties, Rim Rock Resort at Gull Lake, Lakewood Golf Course, and the Sylvan Lake Marina. They also owned and operated the Miss Mermaid Dinner Cruise on Sylvan Lake, where Miriam was the main chef for many years. The roast beef dinner was her specialty, and her homemade salad dressing was a hit – which they bottled and sold separately. The also owned and operated the Lost Harbor Inn. During their “retirement” years, Miriam and Al spent 28 years in Juarez, Mexico with their charity, Operation Amigo. During that time, they built many orphanages, schools, and churches. They accomplished this feat by taking teams of workers from all around Canada, plus physically working very hard themselves, often taking up to five trips per year to achieve their goals. Many lives were improved because of their generosity of time and money, and more importantly, their compassionate spirit. Mexico will never be the same. After the passing of Al, Miriam married Melvin “Mel” Johnson on November 17, 2021. Miriam had a deep trust in her Saviour and friend, Jesus. She had the honour of leading some of her children to Jesus. Miriam was a lady of positivity. The following is a poem that was written for Miriam on her 85 th birthday: Mom, you are one amazing Wonder Woman! All that you’ve done and accomplished in these 85 years is quite extraordinary. Starting from a child who was often very sick, marrying young and raising a family of four boys and four girls, along with thousands of foster kids. On top of that, you kept a home; a place of care and love for all, and you have been a gracious host to countless guests. Your flexibility to go from one thing to another in your support for Dad with his many ventures, was phenomenal. Also, what is phenomenal was you putting up with Dad! (ha, ha) You have been a loyal supporter to all your family, and several others too. Mom, you’re one amazing Wonder Woman, and we are grateful to you for pouring many good things into our lives, whether recognized or not! You have an incredible resilience in life, a strong faith in God, and you always pray! We are happy for you, Mom, to have found a new love and husband in Mel. You regularly say, “The Lord has blessed me with a very good man” … and we agree. Thank you for giving all that you did and could. You weren’t perfect, but God loves you perfectly. We celebrate you for who you are, and we honour you as the mother, who God in his wisdom, chose for us. Mom, you are one amazing Wonder Woman. Miriam will be remembered by her loving and servant-hearted husband of four years, Mel. She will also be forever remembered and missed by her eight children Sugar (Willy) Goertzen, Patti Brady, Wendy (Ray) Block, Perry (Cathy) Carruthers, Tim (Laurie) Carruthers, Darcy (Susan) Carruthers, Amelia Carruthers, and Roger (Lori) Carlson; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
