Byron “Barney” Arnot of Eckville, Alberta, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the age of 85 years.
A man deeply connected to the outdoors; Barney found his greatest joy in fishing and spending time in nature. Whether casting a line in a quiet reflection, or simply soaking in the beauty of the land, he felt most at home under open skies. One of Barney’s favourite places was the deck he shared with his wife, where countless hours were spent talking, laughing, and enjoying the simple comfort of being together.
Barney had a lifelong love for horses; admiring their strength and spirit, and he cherished every opportunity to be around them. Above all else, family was at the heart of his life. He took great pride in time spent with his loved ones, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Barney will be remembered for his steady presence, kind heart, and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the traditions passed down, and the deep love he had for his family.
Barney is survived by his devoted wife Janice; and his children Tami (Perry), Elaine, Terry, and Bobby. He is also survived by his treasured grandchildren Ashley (Chad), Raelynn (Brandon), Cody (Aimey), Dustin (Lisa), MacKenzie (Andrew), Andrea (Rocky), Sarah (Alan), and Erin (Brad); as well as twenty-seven great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law Jim (Linda); and his sister-in-law Paddy, all of whom will miss him dearly. Barney was predeceased by his mother, Babs and father, Barney Sr.; his son Randy; his sister Sharon; his parents-in-law, Ruth and Fred Morton; in addition to a brother-in-law Neil Lamond.
“He will forever remain in our hearts – found in the quiet of the outdoors, the stillness of the water, and the warmth of family gathered together.”
With respect for Barney’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. He will be laid to rest in the Bradshaw Cemetery, Leedale at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in Barney’s memory may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 (www.stars.ca).
