It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Patricia “Pat” Ann Coston of Rimbey, Alberta, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Pat passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the age of 66 years.
Pat was born on July 16, 1960, in Olds, Alberta, to James and Edna Gardner. She was the fifth of seven children; having three older brothers and an older sister, and one younger sister and a younger brother. The Gardner family resided on a farm west of Olds in the Eagle Hill area, where Pat attended the Hainstock School until its closure, finishing her schooling in Olds.
It was in Olds that Pat met Norm Coston, her high school sweetheart, and on October 23, 1976 they were married. They welcomed a son, Kevin, and a couple of years later, a daughter, Jennifer. The young family lived in the Olds area, as well as in Rocky Mountain House, before settling in Rimbey in 1984. They put down their roots in Rimbey, after moving there for Norm’s job, and they continue to call it home even now.
Pat enjoyed photography, gardening, and crafting. She constantly had her camera in hand to capture the special moments when her grandkids were little. In the summer months you could find Pat tending to her vegetable and flower gardens, with hardly ever a weed to be seen! She also possessed a creative side that showed in her love for making home décor signs, diamond dot artwork, and many other handcrafted treasures. Pat always had time to put on a pot of coffee for family, friends, and neighbours that stopped by for a visit. But most of all, she was an amazing grandma to her five grandchildren. She never missed a chance to attend Christmas concerts, birthday parties, or any opportunity to cheer them on from the stands. Years later, Pat would welcome three precious great-grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart.
Pat will be lovingly remembered by her husband of nearly 50 years, Norm; her children Kevin (Jamie) Coston and Jennifer (Cole) Bramley; as well as her five cherished grandchildren Kennedy (Justin) Tams, Kelsey (Brad) Walker, Ethan Coston, Kess (Curtis) Shippelt, and Austin Bramley; and her great-grandchildren Jack, Claire, and Harrison. She will also be lovingly remembered by her mother Edna Gardner; her mother-in-law Vivian Coston; her brothers, sisters, and in-laws; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many close friends. Pat was predeceased by her father James Gardner; her father-in-law James Coston; her brother-in-law Wayne Coston; and her sister-in-law Jeannette LaRiviere.
A Memorial Service in Celebration of Pat’s Life will be held at the Last West Community Hall, near Rimbey (12 miles west of Rimbey on Hwy 53; then 1.5 miles north on Range Road 44) on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with her son, Kevin Coston hosting. She will be laid to rest in the Columbarium at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey later in the day. If desired, memorial donations in Pat’s memory may be made directly to the Last West Community Hall, Box 793, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.
