It is with heavy hearts that those who knew and loved Willem “William” Geertsma of Rimbey, Alberta sadly announce his passing on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the age of 85 years.

Born in the Netherlands on April 23, 1940, “Bill,” as affectionately known by his friends and family, immigrated to Canada in 1953 at the young age of 13 years.  He met his best friend Lillian in 1961, and they were united in marriage in 1966.  Together, they dairy farmed in the Ponoka area until 1978.  They eventually sold the farm and moved to an acreage west of Rimbey.  When Lillian passed away in 2000, Bill remained on their acreage, residing there for almost 50 years.  For those who knew him, Bill was a giving person who quietly volunteered wherever help was needed.  He was a faithful volunteer with the Rimbey Lions Club, and even though he was not a club member, Bill was honoured with a Melvin Jones Fellowship award, the highest honour the club can bestow upon a community member in recognition of continuous dedication and service to helping others and the community.  Helping in whatever way that Bill could to contribute to the benefit of others was his enjoyment in life.  He never turned down an opportunity to assist anyone, and his many kindnesses, generosity, and compassionate care will never be forgotten.

Bill will be deeply missed by his friends and family.  He is survived by five brothers Sid (Gladys) of Bashaw; Clarence (Donna) of High Prairie; Jack (Evelyn) of Ponoka; Howard of Ohaton, Alberta; and Michael (Shauna) of Camrose; and two sisters Jennie (Merle) Goetz of High Prairie; and Hilda (Jim) Tomaszewski of Camrose; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many close and dear friends.  Bill was predeceased by his wife, Lillian; and his parents Bert and Margje.

With respect for Bill’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held.  If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com). Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
