Beatrice May Clough of Rimbey, Alberta sadly passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, a few minutes past midnight on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the age of 91 years. ‘Bea’, as she was known to everyone, was born on January 19, 1929 in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up on her parent’s farm northeast of Saskatoon, near Brooksby. While growing up in Saskatchewan, the Salvation Army became an important part of her life. In 1948, Bea moved to B.C., along with most of her family, and ended up in Revelstoke. While there, she became friends with a woman named Florence Clough, who became very anxious for her to meet her grandson. Eventually she did, and they fell in love! Bea and Jesse Clough were married on September 14, 1949. She was still in her 20s when she lost her parents. Bea’s mother, Estelle Jones, passed away not long after the wedding, and her father, William Jones, about eight years later. Bea and Jesse raised their family in Revelstoke. She was an active member of the Moose Lodge and never missed a chance to go dancing. In 1972, the family moved to Alberta and began farming in the Rimbey area; where they stayed, were extremely happy in their new life, and made many, many friends. The couple left the farm and moved into the Parkland Manor in October, 2016. Jesse passed away soon after, and Bea remained at the manor. Bea’s family meant everything to her. She worked tirelessly and endlessly looking after her home, feeding the family, and making sure everyone had everything they needed or wanted. Her cooking skills were legendary. Many neighbours were only too happy to stop and help Jesse with whatever project he might be working on, at least in part for an opportunity to be fed at Bea’s table! In addition to a great deal of sewing and knitting, she enjoyed spending many winter hours, along with other ladies of the community, making quilts for the annual Gimlet Rodeo quilt raffle. Bea was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Jesse Clough on November 26, 2016 at the age of 89 years. Over the years, she lost all but two of her eleven siblings. Bea is survived by her three children: David Clough (Denise) of the Gimlet District; Judy Carlson (Lawrence) of Red Deer; and youngest son, Dwayne Clough, also of Red Deer; as well as four cherished grandsons: Luke Clough of Rimbey; Steven Clough (Trisha), also of Rimbey; Paul Carlson (Keri) of Edmonton; and Carl Carlson (Josie) of Red Deer; and four great grandchildren: Madalynn, Mallory, Zakkary, and Zoey. She is also survived by her eldest sister, Lil Degerness of Melfort, Saskatchewan (99 years old); and her youngest brother, Don Jones of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (81 years old); in addition to many nieces and nephews in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. “Bea will be very sadly missed by many.” Due to the government gathering restrictions at the time, no service was held. She was an aficionado of BBC’s sci-fi series, ‘Doctor Who’, from the early era to the current generation. Phyllis Rose Kluczny of Winfield, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Edmonton on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Phyllis was born in Millet, Alberta on September 14, 1935, the eighth child of Arthur and Mary Cartier. The family later moved to Winfield, where she met the love of her life, Walter. They were married on November 4, 1952, and to this union seven children were born. Phyllis was a life-time farmer’s wife who enjoyed gardening, sewing, and spending time outside in nature. Not a minute did she waste - and that was her motto until the end. Phyllis was content with common sense, and she called it like she saw it. After Walter passed away in 2001, Phyllis had a sad place in her heart … but she learned that joy came back into her life through the people she loved, and those who loved her. Dancing was also something Phyllis really had a passion for. Both Phyllis and Walter were social people, so to endure these last few months of public health measures during COVID-19, Phyllis especially missed being with her dance friends. Her heartfelt concern for everyone’s well-being was felt by many, and her family and friends meant the absolute world to her. “Phyllis’ kind and generous ways will always be missed. She may be gone from our sight, but she will never be gone from our hearts.” Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her children: David, Cathy (George) Ollenberger, Carol (Charles) Collisson, Michael, Brenda (Lyle) Swanson, Annette (Neil) Buschert, and Rita (Barry) Clarkson. She will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Michael, Christie, and Brennen Kluczny; Paul, and Devin (Tonni) Ollenberger, and Melaney (Shawn) Brownlee; Darryl and Shannon Collisson; Jordan and Madison Swanson; Michelle (Jerry) Haskell; Garrett and Dylan Buschert; and Austin and Emily Clarkson; as well as her great grandchildren: Benjamin and Lyra Ollenberger; Violet Fritz; and Lincoln, Cort, and Bowden Haskell. Phyllis will also be missed by her sister, Shirley (Don) Laczo; her sisters-in-law: Doris Kluczny, and Enid Cartier; her brother-in-law, Clarence Kluczny; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and cherished friends. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Walter; and her siblings: Alfred (Clarice), Leo (Joan), Tom (Helen), Emile (Joyce), Agnes (Edward) Abbott, Wilfred, and Dan. A Private Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta on Friday, December 4, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Father Sylvio Lacar, Celebrant. Phyllis was laid to rest beside her husband, Walter in the Poplar Valley Cemetery, Winfield at a later date. - BOYCE
Gwen Elizabeth Boyce (Jones) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at the age of 74 years. Gwen was born on January 5, 1946 to Stan and Jessie Jones. She was raised in the Homeglen District and was well-cared for by both her parents and maternal grandparents, who happily lived in their home together. Although an only child, Gwen's life was filled with many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and neighbours. Gwen attended school in Sylvan Heights and Ponoka. She went on to attend college in Olds, graduating from the Secretarial Sciences program in 1965. Gwen, a dark-eyed, dark-haired beauty, began spending time with Pat Boyce at community dances and events, and eventually they were married in 1966. The couple resided in the Springdale area on the Boyce homestead and raised their three children, Shauna, Shannon, and Steven there. Gwen worked at the Bluffton School as a secretary, with Rimoka Housing as the financial officer, and at the Summer Village of Gull Lake as an administrator. She also partnered with Pat to run both the family farm and gravel company. Gwen retired from the Summer Village in 2007 when her parents required more care. With pride, she supported them as they aged and ensured their needs were met. Gwen took great pride in her children and grandchildren. Her grandkids held a special place in her heart. She was always available to chauffeur, babysit, or chat; and she rarely missed a game, a sale, or an event. Gwen played significant roles in all her children and grandchildren's lives, and saw each of them as individuals. She engaged in long chats on the phone with Sammy, loved hearing about Owen's next animal adventure, had political conversations with Ben, and enjoyed crafting and cooking with Jenna. Gwen was a firecracker, and if you needed her down-to-earth opinion, or her advocacy on a subject, she would give it, but not always on the same side of the argument as you hoped. She always welcomed friends and family to her kitchen table at the farm, or the couch at the condo. Gwen had a love for gardening, preserving, wood work, and was skilled in handicrafts, such as: leatherwork, painting, crocheting, sewing, and knitting. She was not always skilled at getting projects done in a timely manner. Gwen was active on many boards and had many volunteer positions in the community, including Victim Services and the Kansas Ridge Condo Board. She also loved sports, as a participant herself or a fan. Those closest to her knew not to try having a conversation with her if a Jays game or a bonspiel was on. Gwen was never one to sit idle; she was practical and straightforward when things needed to get done. She was an active member in many aspects of 4-H; from a member of home economics as a child, to supporting Pat in leading Light Horse 4-H, and as a leader herself of the Lavesta Sewing Club for many years. Gwen, of course, also supported her children and grandchildren in their 4-H experiences. Gwen will be greatly missed as a mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Shauna Boyce (Sam Paul) of Sturgeon County; Shannon Boyce-Campbell (Gerald Jennex) of the Homeglen District; and Steven (Teri) Boyce of the Springdale District; as well as four precious grandchildren: Sam, Owen, Ben, and Jenna; in addition to other relatives, and many close friends. Gwen was predeceased by her parents, Jessie in 2008 and Stan in 2009; and her husband, Pat in 1996. A special thank you to the Rimbey Hospital, Acute Care unit for the care that they provided to Gwen. In Celebration of Gwen’s uniqueness, and in appreciation for her favorite time of year, Halloween - Gwen’s family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and acquaintances were invited to gather at the Rimbey Jr./Sr. High School parking lot on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. to take part in a Memorial Parade in Gwen’s Honour through the Kansas Ridge Estates condominiums. The Family wished to remind those who attended to please follow provincial health guidelines. Respecting Gwen's wishes, a private family gathering will take place at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Gwen’s Memory may be made directly to the Bluffton 4-H Beef Club, Box 1116, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to the Rimbey Health Services Donations Program, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre - Acute Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com). - SNAIR
Daniel ‘Dan’ J. Snair of Gull Lake, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Monday, October 12, 2020 at the age of 54 years. Dan grew up in Springhill, Nova Scotia, and was the youngest of eight children. At the age of 19 years, he left Nova Scotia and travelled to Red Deer, Alberta to live with his brother, Paul. When he was 21 years old, Dan met the love of his life, Bonnie, and they were married in 1989. He spent the first 11 years in Alberta working at Michener Centre. Dan taught himself sign language so that he could work with the deaf in the group homes. As Michener Centre started to close many of their facilities, Dan decided it was time to try the oilfield industry. He spent the last 21 years of his oilfield career working with Trican Well Services. In 2001, Dan and Bonnie moved to Gull Lake and created a beautiful oasis to eventually retire at. His most favorite spot at home was sitting around the fire pit. Dan’s family was his world - he loved his sons, Josh and Jade, his grandson, Nicholas, and his wife, Bonnie immensely. He was the most kind and generous father, husband, friend, and son. Dan also possessed a tremendous sense of humor, and there wasn’t a day that went by without laughter. He loved to be by the water, either boating or challenging Jade and Bonnie in fish-catching competitions. As a creative woodworker, Dan took the greatest pleasure in making things for his family. He enjoyed puttering around in his garage; either woodworking, rebuilding his RC trucks, or bringing antique toys back to life. For the last 6 months, Dan fought a courageous battle against cancer. He will never be forgotten. Dan will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Bonnie; his two sons, Josh of Sooke, B.C.; and Jade (Lisa) of Blackfalds; as well as his precious grandson, Nicholas. He will also be lovingly remembered by his mother, Bessie Snair of Antigonish, Nova Scotia; and his brother, Brian of Truro, Nova Scotia; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and close friends. Dan was predeceased by his father, Gordon; and his six siblings: Mary, Wayne, Paul, Mike, Frank, and Shane. He was laid to rest in the Columbarium at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey at a later date. - SOUTAR
Our beloved husband, dad, papa, brother, and uncle, Daniel ‘Danny’ E. Soutar of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away peacefully, with his wife, Arlene by his side, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, October 9, 2020 at the age of 62 years. He was a loving man who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Danny was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on March 18, 1958, the second of four boys. He spent his childhood moving to and from mining towns, ending up in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he joined CP Rail. Upon moving to Red Deer years later, Danny continued working with CP Rail as a track maintainer in the Maintenance-of-Way Department. This is where he met Arlene, while she worked in the office. He came in once to use the photocopier, and caught her eye. After that, he would regularly stop to chat with her. For two years they saw each other at work, until finally Arlene took it upon herself to ask when he was taking her for supper! That’s all it took, and they were happily together for nearly thirty years! Danny was a family man who loved to cook for his family and friends, and was famous for his Caesar salad. He also loved to experiment with new ingredients to put a new spin on food. Danny always enjoyed listening to Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Def Leppard, and many more great artists while relaxing around the house, or doing chores. One of his favorite things to do on Friday nights was to have a wiener roast with family and friends in the back yard. He would always say to his friends, “Help yourself; if you can’t find it, we don’t have it”. Danny also loved to tease. When invited to supper, after serving what you believed to be a large meal, he would ask, “What’s for supper?” – then chuckle. Danny adored his son, Austin. He loved Austin shadowing him during house renovations, and sharing with him the basic skills of construction. Austin will always be thankful for the time his dad spent with him on these projects. Danny enjoyed watching Austin’s practices and many performances with the Red Deer Royals Marching Show Band. Danny first discovered his love of international travel when he and Arlene joined Austin with the Red Deer Royals on their competitive trip to Europe. After this trip, Danny and Arlene returned to Paris, England, and Scotland. While visiting any castle, palace, or famous landmark, Danny made a point of kissing Arlene. Not a man to show too much affection, he told her that this way she would have been kissed at the Louvre, Edinburgh Castle, and the Eiffel Tower, just to name a few. His grandson, Sawyer was Danny’s pride and joy. Papa saved every snack he found to give to Sawyer, and he was always spoiling him with little gifts and gadgets he found that he knew Sawyer would love. Danny enjoyed finding things to keep Sawyer entertained; from building forts in the living room, to blowing up water balloons in the back yard. Papa also loved to just sit and cuddle with Sawyer. Danny loved all of his nieces and nephews. When they came to visit, you would find them climbing all over him. Many would fall asleep in his lap. As they grew older, Danny made a point of giving them rides on the CP trains (along with any of their friends that tagged along). Many remember this as one of the coolest days of their childhood. Arlene comes from a large family, and whenever projects were being done, Danny would lend a hand. One time, digging more than 300 holes for a tree planting; and another time, shoveling all the cement mix into the mixer for a massive barn floor. The mixer couldn’t keep up with him, and Danny had to wait for it! In fact, years later, Austin was helping Auntie Dale and Uncle Wayne pour concrete for deck foundations. When Austin arrived on site, they joked that he would have to try his best to load the same mixer as fast as his father had all those year ago. Austin could almost match Danny’s legendary speed. Danny always went in, sleeves rolled up, ready to show everyone how it’s done - something he instilled proudly into his son. He will be lovingly remembered by all. xx Danny will be forever remembered by his wife, Arlene; and his son, Austin (Julie) of Red Deer; as well as his loving grandson, Sawyer. He will also be remembered by two brothers, Tom (Debbie) of Stonewall, Manitoba, and their family: Scott (Serina), and Tommy (Kitty); and Bill (Barb) of Calgary, and their family: Nika (Rob), Tasha, and Alex; his sister, Christine (Ian) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and their family: Tina (Mario), and Lucia (Steve); and his stepbrother, Al (Sherri) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and their son, Cory. Danny is also survived by his six sisters-in-law, Melinda (Steve) and their family: Morgan, and Erinn (Jordie); Jacqueline; Lori and her daughter: Allison (Devan); Kathy (Gord) and their family: Megan (Garth), Wes (Kendra), and Maddy (Cody); Dale (Wayne) and their family: Cody (Cody), and Dustin (Janelle); and Suzanne (Bill) and their family: Jenny, Ashley (Braedy), and Cody (Sarah); in addition to numerous aunts, uncles, great nieces and nephews, and many friends. Danny was predeceased by his father, Tom; his mother, Connie; and a younger brother, Rusty. With respect for Danny’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. At a later date, Danny was laid to rest in the Columbarium at the Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer. - CARRUTHERS
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Allan ‘Al’ Edwin Carruthers, a loving husband and father of many. Al passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Monday, October 5, 2020 at the age of 83 years. Al was born on June 16, 1937 in Grenfell, Saskatchewan to Herbert and Caroline (Mohr) Carruthers. Caroline raised the family of six children as a single mother. Al was united in marriage to Miriam (Baur) on November 2, 1957; and together they raised four daughters, four sons, and over 25 foster children throughout the years. While raising their family, they resided in Edmonton, Red Deer, and Blackfalds; later settling in Sylvan Lake. Al endeavoured to honour and serve God in all he did. His faith in Jesus was very important to him. He was an ambitious, caring, and fun man. He was also a hard worker who broke a lot of negative fatherly cycles, and we admired his fighter spirit. Al’s passion was to help others, and he did it well through many avenues. Together with Miriam, they loved to be involved in many church activities. Al held a special place in his heart for the youth, and enjoyed the role of Sunday School Superintendent, as well as his involvement with Scouts Canada. He would also organize rodeos for Michener Centre and for the church, and was helpful in many other organizations over the years. Al was known to invite others to join him on trips, even to Hawaii; and he would often take people out for a meal, or buy them an ice cream cone, just to simply brighten their day. Al and Miriam were also involved in many business ventures over the past 60 years, including: many construction projects, owning rental properties, Rim Rock Resort at Gull Lake, Lakewood Golf Course, the Lost Harbor Inn, and the Sylvan Lake Marina - where Al was very instrumental in getting the original light house constructed. For 13 years they also owned and operated Miss Mermaid Dinner Cruises, where he enjoyed being ‘Captain Al’. During their ‘retirement’ years, Al and Miriam spent 28 years in Juarez, Mexico with their charity, Operation Amigo. During that time, they built many orphanages, schools, and churches. They accomplished this feat by taking teams of workers from all around Canada, and physically working very hard themselves, often taking up to five trips per year to achieve their goals. Many lives were improved because of their generosity of time and money; and more importantly, their compassionate spirit. Mexico will never be the same. Al enjoyed entertaining and humour. He always had a quick joke, liked to tease, and he was also known for a prank or two (throwing the odd pie)! Al was also a great storyteller - sometimes his stories were true - and sometimes they were told with considerable embellishment! He liked to jokingly refer to himself as ‘the man of steel’. Al was not a perfect man, but God loved him perfectly. Al will be lovingly remembered by his God-fearing and loyal wife of almost 64 years, Miriam. They were a great team that worked together side-by-side. Al was the visionary, and Miriam was the detail person behind the scenes who wove it all together. He will also be forever remembered and greatly missed by his eight children: Sugar (Willy) Goertzen, Patti Brady, Wendy (Ray) Block, Perry (Cathy) Carruthers, Tim (Laurie) Carruthers, Darcy (Susan) Carruthers, Amelia Carruthers (Ron), and Roger (Lori) Carlson; in addition to twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Al is additionally survived by his sisters: Alice, Ruth, and Donna; and his brother, Bill. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Audrey. “You were an incredible man - who left us with a strong legacy. Thank you. You have fought the good fight. You have finished the race.” Due to gathering restrictions at the time, a family-only Celebration of Life Funeral Service in Al’s Honour was held at the Bentley Community Church, Bentley on Friday, October 9, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Rathjen officiating. Everyone was invited to join Al’s Celebration of Life online, (Meeting ID: 480 821 0835), by following the Zoom Link at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4808210835 A private Interment Service preceded the Celebration of Life in the Bentley Cemetery, Bentley. Condolence messages may be forwarded to the family by visiting: www.ofc-ltd.ca Desiderata – Words for Life Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. - Max Ehrmann, 1927 Cremation Arrangements for the Late Lori E. - WILSON
James ‘Jim’ Edwin Wilson of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at the age of 80 years. Jim was born and raised in Vegreville, Alberta, and was the middle child in a family of nine children. As a young man, he loved his time spent in the army cadets, becoming a corporal in the Reserve Force. Jim joined the Alberta Treasury Branch and worked at branches in Vermilion and Olds before moving to Camrose, where he met the love of his life, Vera, who was a daily customer. Due to his work, they resided in several communities throughout Alberta before settling in Rimbey in 1978, where they raised their family and later retired. Retirement, however, didn’t sit well with Jim. It wasn’t long before he re-entered the workforce, working part-time at Rimbey Builders Supply until his health declined. He absolutely loved this ‘second career’. Jim was actively involved in his church and the community, and never missed an opportunity to go for coffee with his friends. He enjoyed a vast number of activities, such as: curling, bowling, golfing, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, water skiing, softball, badminton, tennis, woodworking, and tinkering with his model trains. Jim also appreciated any opportunity to travel near and far – often making adventurous family vacations a priority, and in later years, he loved to embark on many road trip excursions with his wife, Vera. His most precious moments were those he spent in the company of his family, and he delighted in spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He possessed a mischievous side, a gentle humour, and a kind and peaceful spirit. Jim lived his life in song – turning random phrases into little ditties throughout each day. His melody will be greatly missed. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 55 years, Vera; and his three sons: Darin Wilson of Calgary, Doug Wilson of Truro, Nova Scotia, and Jason (Angie) Wilson of Rimbey; as well as two grandchildren: Katlyne and Kristina (Eric); and three great grandchildren: Nevaeh, Karissa, and Geoffrey. He will also be lovingly remembered by six sisters: Fran Ewart of Westlock, Gladys Wilson of Edmonton, Hazel (Wayne) Krywalt of Lethbridge, Liz (Cliff) Badger of Calgary, Doris Pierce of Lestock Saskatchewan, and Terry (Don) Bernard of Delta, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many cherished friends. - CADSAND
Elaine Evangeline Cadsand of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Area Three on Monday, June 29, 2020 at the age of 92 years. Elaine was born in her grandfather’s home at Ghost Pine, Alberta on November 8, 1927. At the young age of three years, the family moved to Burnaby, B.C. It was there that she attended school until Grade 9. At the age of 17 years, Elaine and her Aunt Margaret entered hairdressing school. Elaine had to sell her guitar and cash-in her savings bonds to pay for her education. Elaine met Dan shortly after, and they were married on February 6, 1946. After their boys were born, Elaine and Dan decided to buy a ranch in Mamit Lake, B.C., where Dan worked as logger while Elaine stayed home and looked after the ranch doing chores and hairdressing. She was an extremely hard worker, and lived a very rustic lifestyle for many years. In 1972, Elaine and Dan relocated to Rimbey, bringing David and Gordon to what the boys call ‘Lower Slabovia’. Elaine opened Elaine’s Beauty Salon, working until the age of 80 years, when her hip gave out and she needed surgery. Family ties, history, and photographs were incredibly important to Elaine. She kept in touch with all her relatives and friends, handwriting letters and cards. Every summer Elaine would drive out to B.C., many times alone, to visit all her friends and relations, making her way across the province. She also loved her garden and flowers, spending hours outside planting and weeding. Elaine possessed a strong faith, kind nature, and a heart of gold … always giving whatever she had to help someone out. She will be greatly missed. Elaine will be forever remembered by her loving family: her three sons, Daniel (Sharon) Cadsand of Rimbey; David (Paula) Cadsand of Pike Lake, Saskatchewan; and Gordon (Lana) Cadsand of Rimbey; as well as seven treasured grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren. - GRAHAM
With intense sadness we announce the sudden passing of Robert ‘Bob’ Edwin Graham on June 25, 2020 at the age of 33 years. Robert will always be remembered for his very loving and soft heart. Throughout his life, and especially in the past five years, Bob worked with his mom and dad at their place of business doing whatever was needed to be done. He was his dad’s right-hand man. His big heart ensured he was always there to lend a helping hand, regardless of what was requested. Bob would simply figure out a way to make it happen. He put his ‘all’ into anything and everything he did, and had no fear of hard work. From a very young age, Bob loved sports, hunting, fishing, and camping – and just about anything else that could be done outdoors. Robert’s passing has left a large hole in his family’s hearts … and in the hearts of the many lives he has touched. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Robert is lovingly survived by his treasured daughter and light of his life, Mysti Galpin; and his much-loved parents, Chris and Julie Graham. His memory will also be cherished by his brother and sister-in-law, Alex and Karesa Graham; his precious nephew, Owen and niece, Anna; in addition to his grandfather and grandmothers; and an endless number of friends, aunts, uncles, and cousins who are scattered across the country. Robert is predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Robert Fizer; and his paternal grandparents, Jenny Covell, Hazel Graham, and Cliff Graham. Following much discussion among his family and close friends, an outdoor gathering to safely Celebrate Robert’s Life was held. Over the next 37 glorious years, they taught and lived in the communities of Alder Flats/Buck Lake, Ponoka, Crestomere, Mecca Glen, and Bentley, raising their two children, Kami and Ken. Lee was a dedicated and talented teacher, a profession she aspired to from a very young age, and one in which she continued to learn and grow throughout her career; during which she taught from Grades 3 to 10, attained a Master’s Degree, served as a school administrator, and an instructional and technology leader and coach. She will be fondly remembered by her school communities and parents, colleagues and teammates, and the students she loved so much. Lee loved to watch her daughter skate, and became deeply involved with the figure skating community; working at a variety of positions with the Ponoka Skating Club, the Alberta CFSA Section, and loved being a part of that family almost as much as she loved complaining about sitting in the cold bleachers while the kids lit up the ice. In later years, Lee enjoyed being connected to an international network of figure skating athletes, officials, and fans, traveling to competitions across North America and meeting like-minded people previously known only through their internet connections. In later years, as their children grew and moved away from the nest, Lee discovered a new love, traveling. She loved nothing more than to pack up the motor home, and together with Gerry, go searching for new places to camp - driving across Canada and the U.S.A., visiting places they had only seen in pictures or read about in books. Sitting in that front seat, telling Gerry where to go, was a rare pleasure that they planned to pursue even more as Lee wrapped up her teaching career. As her children married and started families of their own, Lee discovered a captivating new hobby … spoiling grandchildren! Kami (Kevin) Gelinas introduced her to Brenna and Paisley; while Kenny (Christy) Varty added Kelton and Lacey to the party. These four darlings knew her as ‘Nannie’, and adored spending time with her almost as much as she enjoyed time with them. She was the matriarch, the central love of our families. Loved deeply by her husband, Gerry; her daughter, Kami (husband, Kevin plus grandchildren, Brenna and Paisley); and her son, Ken (wife, Christy plus grandchildren, Kelton and Lacey). Lee is also lovingly remembered by her stepfather, Edward Brown; her sister, Chris (Gary) Vandebunte and family; and her brother, Bruce Brown. She was predeceased by both her mother, Joyce Brown and her father, Ken Woodhouse Sr. Lee believed that ‘one can never have too much family’, and so she found and reconnected with her ‘other’ family (Woodhouse); consisting of three half-brothers: Larry (Wendy), Bill (Linda), and Ken (Sharon) and their families, who all reside in Ontario. On this side, she was predeceased by her half-brother, Dave Woodhouse. Due to gathering restrictions at the time, a small, private Remembrance Service in Lee’s Honour was held. Keeping the service private was a difficult decision, arrived at after much discussion by the family. We are acutely aware of how many lives Lee touched as a teacher, a friend, a community member, a courageous, smiling patient, and a stand-in-rent-a-mom for kids young and old; and we are deeply sorry that we could not have an open, large funeral celebration for everybody to say ‘goodbye’. But, if you really knew Lee, you know that she would have everyone’s safety ranked first on her priority list … if her farewell celebration turned into a Covid super-spreader event, she would be very upset, not to mention quite capable of haunting us all for that poor decision! Those who desire may make memorial tributes in Lee’s memory to the Bentley School Breakfast Program, something Lee started and took great pride in, to help every child start the day with the security of food in their stomach with no judgment or discussion. Any donations may be made payable to the Wolf Creek School Division and mailed directly to: Cards 4 Lee, c/o Bentley School, Box 299, 5314 – 49 Street, Bentley, Alberta T0C 0J0. Please take the time to include a little anecdote, picture, story, or memory you have of Lee – even if you choose not to donate – so that we can all share those inspirations to keep her legacy alive in our hearts. Loving Lee was easy … she loved every one of us, and our lives are a little brighter because of her smile. Cremation Arrangements for the Late Alicia ‘Lee’ Varty entrusted to the care of

- INGLES
Denise Marie Ingles of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with her kids by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the age of 77 years. Denise Marie was born in Lethbridge on September 23, 1942 to Bill and Frances Collin, and resided in Warner, Alberta until she married Roy Smith in 1960. They lived in a few towns before settling in Calgary. The marriage produced four children who were the love of Denise’s life: Marty, Nancy, Jim, and Marlene. In the late 60s, Denise took on a new role of parenting, changing their lives forever. With the support of her brothers, sisters, and close friends, she chose to raise her kids on her own. She sewed most of her kid’s clothes, and always made sure they were warm and in style. Music was handed down from her mom, which Denise loved. Learning to play the guitar and having a strong will, she formed a band and played music to help support her new life. Her kids soon learned that playing music and singing, whether it was at band practice or sitting in the living room with the guitar learning another song, was Denise’s other passion. Denise eventually remarried and moved to the Rimbey area again. For many years she enjoyed life, hosting family and friends in her house at Birch Bay. With her kids all married and grandchildren on the way, she enjoyed life, but something was missing. After many years, her love for music and the western life-style once again changed her direction. Denise moved to Buck Lake where she worked alongside her daughter, Nancy and family on the Buck Lake Community Pasture. This was her true delight in life. She loved family, horses, camping, and the great outdoors. She also spent many years out at the Hummingbird area, helping with horses and trail rides. She loved it there. In the summer, she rode horses, played music, and enjoyed her now-growing family of grandchildren. She stayed on there, hand-feeding grain to 100+ bulls every day, all winter. When her sister-in-law, Sharon passed away in 2005, Denise then moved to Olds and moved in with her brother, Bud. She lived with him for thirteen wonderful years. They made an awesome team. For several years they spent their winters at their place in Mesa, Arizona. When they came back to Canada in the spring, they spent time traveling around and visiting their family and friends. In 2019, with some health concerns, they realized they could no longer spend their winters in Arizona. In September, Denise decided to move back to Rimbey into the Valley View Manor. Once again she was back playing music at every opportunity. She loved seeing her new and old friends enjoying music and making requests for songs. Denise enjoyed life. She loved colors, from colored jeans and boots to her red lawn swing on her deck. She loved sewing western shirts with her logo, ‘Barbwire Bush’; and she loved rodeos, bonfires, and country music. She was singing or humming all the time. She loved spending time with family, playing cards and games. She enjoyed her brothers and sisters. They were a close family. They got together many times throughout the years; spending time together in Arizona, at Wilbur’s cabin, and their annual family Christmas dinners. Denise will be lovingly missed, and will definitely leave a void in many people’s hearts. We love you, mom! Denise will always be remembered and sadly missed by her loving family: her children, Marty (Cindy) Smith of Chilliwack, B.C.; Nancy (Brian) Miles of High Prairie; Jim (Cheryl) Smith of High River; and Marlene (Darcy) Chalmers of Sherwood Park; as well as nine grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her siblings: three brothers, Wilbur (Edith) Collin of Beaumont; Bud Collin of Athabasca; and Terry Collin of Calgary; and two sisters, Collette (Art) McMullen of Calgary; and Catherine Stroman of Kelowna, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many, many friends. Denise was predeceased by her parents, and her oldest brother, Delbert. Small, private Family Gatherings have taken place. A public Memorial Service in Celebration of Denise’s Life was held at a later date. Denise was laid to rest in the Warner Cemetery, Warner, Alberta. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Red Lodge Guest Ranch, 34502 Range Road 22, Red Deer County, Alberta T0M 0K0 (www.redlodgeoutfitters.com); or to the Friends of the Eastern Slopes, Box 6093, Innisfail, Alberta T4G 1S7 (www.foesa.org). - OSOKIN
Richard ‘Dick’ Roy Osokin of the Homeglen District, Alberta passed away suddenly on Monday, May 11, 2020 at the age of 74 years. Dick was born and raised wreaking havoc in Homeglen with his siblings his entire childhood! He attended the Homeglen School for Grades 1 to 6, Sylvan Heights for Grades 6 to 10, and the Ponoka High School for Grades 11 and 12. It was during his high school years that Dick developed into a high-profile football player, sought after during his time playing with the Edmonton Huskies. Sport did not trump his ability to master other skills; including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and just about anything else! A jack-of-all-trades and a master of all, Dick used his skills to assist anyone who needed his help. He met the love of his life, Frances McCall while working at the Ponoka Hospital. Despite thinking he was a patient, Dick won her over and they were inseparable from that point on. They settled on Dick’s childhood farm and built a new life for their family, becoming a well-known and loved couple within the community. Dick was employed full-time with his job at the Rimbey Gas Plant as a respected maintenance foreman, as well as maintaining his full-time job farming. He had a very strong work ethic, teaching his daughters early on that, “there’s no such thing as ‘can’t’ - just ‘won’t’!” As an avid motorcyclist, Dick eventually encouraged Fran to join him on the bike to embark on new adventures for the couple. That, and his passion for golf, filled his life with joy. Dick was well-respected, known for his love of a good time, and for always lending a helping hand. Dick will always be remembered and greatly missed by his loving daughters, Michelle Osokin (Andre Doornbos) of Castlegar, B.C. and their daughter, Edie; and Leanne Osokin (David DeRosa) also of Castlegar, B.C. and their children, Marlo and Marcus. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his two sisters, Maggie Leladharsingh of Edmonton; and Joanne (Brent) Thirsk of Ponoka; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other family members, and a host of close friends and neighbours. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Joan; his beloved wife, Fran in 2016; and his older brother, Bob. A Gathering of Family and Friends to Celebrate Dick’s Life was held at a later date. In Dick’s memory, the Family has asked that we all extend a helping hand to our friends and neighbours … as Dick would have always done. - PERLITZ
‘Bill’ Billy Jack Perlitz of Blackfalds, Alberta passed away at his home on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at the age of 42 years. Bill was born at the Bentley Hospital and went home to Rimbey. Growing up, he loved to skidoo. When Bill was just three years old, he would wake up and put his skidoo suit on over his PJ’s, put his snow boots on with no socks, and go outside and sit on the skidoo waiting for his dad to get up and take him for a ride. A short time later when the family was landscaping a new lot for a mobile home, Bill’s dad, Paul, was building a fence. Bill was trying to help by giving his dad boards, but he kept taking boards from only one side of the pile in the wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow eventually tipped over, pinning Bill’s head between the handle of the wheelbarrow and the side of the trailer. On another occasion, Paul was filling the garden tractor with gas to use it, stepping into the trailer for a moment only to realize that meanwhile, little Bill was putting dirt into the gas tank to help out his dad! The family moved to Edmonton when Bill was 3 or 4 years old, where he started school and made many life-long friends. He played hockey and baseball, and loved to skateboard. Bill was 15 when they relocated to Lacombe, and three months later his parents separated. Bill had kept a sense of humour through it all and said, “At least we all get a vacuum.” (Paul was famous for not saying ‘no’ to a salesman.) Bill left school and moved to Provost with his dad and started his working career. He worked service rigs for several years and then went into the drywall business, which eventually was too hard on his body. Bill was a perfectionist at everything he did and was a hard worker. He absolutely adored his animals, and loved his three dogs and cat immensely. They were Bill’s pride and joy. He lost his dog and best friend, Charlie, on October 17, 2019. As soon as the owner of the dog that was mothering Charlie’s puppies found out, she called Bill and offered him his pick of the litter. Bill selected a female pup that was mainly white and had similar markings as Charlie. As soon as we saw her, we knew she’d be named, ‘Charlie’s Angel’. Bill’s niece, Kayla, affectionately writes: “When I hear the name Billy Jack Perlitz, I don’t see the young boy that grandma raised, I don’t see the brother that mom grew up with. I see my uncle. I see my friend. He was the most giving person that I know, and he always put others before himself. He never denied anybody help, no matter the circumstances. Oh, and he always had to have his chocolate ice cream and Slurpee! He will forever be missed by all that knew him. Love you, Bill.” Bill will always be remembered by his loving family: his mother, Donna Perlitz of Blackfalds; his father, Paul Perlitz of Provost; and his older sister, Stacey Dawe of Blackfalds; as well as his treasured niece and nephew, Kayla and Dylan Dawe, also of Blackfalds; and many other relatives and close friends. Bill was predeceased by his grandparents. With respect to the wishes of Bill’s family, no formal funeral service was held. Bill was laid to rest in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Bentley at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Bill’s Memory may be made directly to the Central Alberta Humane Society, 4505 – 77 Street, Red Deer, Alberta T4P 2J1 (www.cahumane.com). - HANCHER
Laverne R. Hancher of Leedale, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Area Two on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the age of 89 years. Laverne was born on his parent’s farm at Leedale, Alberta, and received his education at the Benjamin School. He helped his dad farm until he turned 21 years old. Laverne then enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Ottawa, where he met his wife and best friend, Kathleen ‘Kay’. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Laverne and Kay moved out west to start farming. Tragedy struck the family on November 10, 1979 when their second son, Dallas, was killed in a motor vehicle accident. Their hearts were broken. In the winter months Laverne put together a curling team, and for several years he enjoyed curling at the Leedale Hall. When the Benjamin School was closed down, Laverne was asked to drive the school bus and take the children to the Eckville School. He happily drove the school bus for 10 ½ years. - LONGMAN
With deeply saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Brooke-Lynn ‘Brookie’ Longman of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Too soon and too young she was taken from us at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the age of 12 years. Brooke-Lynn was born at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on January 28, 2007 to Jamie and Jared Longman. She came into this world loving her family with everything she had. For those who were touched by Brooke-Lynn’s love, a special bond was intertwined into everything she did with you. We believe it takes a community to raise a child, and Brooke-Lynn’s community was built on a circle of loyalty, fierce friendship, and plenty of fun! She was always so helpful, especially if it involved taking care of babies or hanging out with her cousins. Brooke was so good with animals, especially Blue and Spaz. No matter what she was doing, she was caring and loving. Brooke-Lynn took great pride in her active lifestyle. Her athleticism was showcased through cheer, swimming, dance, and climbing mountains. Basically anything she tried. She was inseparable from her dear friends Hayden, Kira, Abby, and Teagan. They bonded through their many years in French Immersion at Steffie Woima. Brooke-Lynn’s claim to fame this year was making the senior basketball team while being a junior. She made sure to remind her older sisters, Zoey and Daytona of her achievement daily. Such a proud moment in the Longman household. Brooke-Lynn was taken from us far, far too soon. She will forever remain in our hearts and in our lives. She made a profound impact on everyone she graced with her beautiful soul. She made her entrance into heaven on December 19, 2019. It won’t take long for the angels to realize what an amazing gift they received; a ready-made angel. Much love to our precious Brookie forever and always! “Now she flies with the butterflies” Brooke-Lynn’s community was large and loving. She will be greatly missed and remembered forever by her parents, Jared and Jamie; and her two sisters and best friends, Daytona (Isaiah) and Zoey. She will also be sadly missed by her aunts and uncles, Angelique (Dean) Power and their son, Nicholas; Shannon (Avery) Lozowy and their family, Max, Sam, and Allena; Norris (Lindsay) Longman and their family, Nixon and Masen; and Alex (Andrea) Longman and their family, Madison and Owen; as well as her grandparents, Patrick Summers, Sheilagh (John) Detka, Cliff (Vivian) Longman, her GG, Annette Lapointe; in addition to many cherished friends and other relatives.
