With intense sadness we announce the sudden passing of Robert ‘Bob’ Edwin Graham on June 25, 2020 at the age of 33 years. Robert will always be remembered for his very loving and soft heart. Throughout his life, and especially in the past five years, Bob worked with his mom and dad at their place of business doing whatever was needed to be done. He was his dad’s right-hand man. His big heart ensured he was always there to lend a helping hand, regardless of what was requested. Bob would simply figure out a way to make it happen. He put his ‘all’ into anything and everything he did, and had no fear of hard work. From a very young age, Bob loved sports, hunting, fishing, and camping – and just about anything else that could be done outdoors. Robert’s passing has left a large hole in his family’s hearts … and in the hearts of the many lives he has touched. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Robert is lovingly survived by his treasured daughter and light of his life, Mysti Galpin; and his much-loved parents, Chris and Julie Graham. His memory will also be cherished by his brother and sister-in-law, Alex and Karesa Graham; his precious nephew, Owen and niece, Anna; in addition to his grandfather and grandmothers; and an endless number of friends, aunts, uncles, and cousins who are scattered across the country. Robert is predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Robert Fizer; and his paternal grandparents, Jenny Covell, Hazel Graham, and Cliff Graham. Following much discussion among his family and close friends, an outdoor gathering to safely Celebrate Robert’s Life was held. Everyone joined the family at the Spruce Haven Golf Resort, Bluffton on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. To maintain everyone’s health and well-being, people brought their own chairs and beverages. Over-night camping was also available. - VARTY
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alicia ‘Lee’ Varty (nee Woodhouse) on Monday, June 8, 2020 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. Lee will be forever remembered by her husband and forever friend, Gerry, who she met and married while they were both students at the University of Calgary. Over the next 37 glorious years, they taught and lived in the communities of Alder Flats/Buck Lake, Ponoka, Crestomere, Mecca Glen, and Bentley, raising their two children, Kami and Ken. Lee was a dedicated and talented teacher, a profession she aspired to from a very young age, and one in which she continued to learn and grow throughout her career; during which she taught from Grades 3 to 10, attained a Master’s Degree, served as a school administrator, and an instructional and technology leader and coach. She will be fondly remembered by her school communities and parents, colleagues and teammates, and the students she loved so much. Lee loved to watch her daughter skate, and became deeply involved with the figure skating community; working at a variety of positions with the Ponoka Skating Club, the Alberta CFSA Section, and loved being a part of that family almost as much as she loved complaining about sitting in the cold bleachers while the kids lit up the ice. In later years, Lee enjoyed being connected to an international network of figure skating athletes, officials, and fans, traveling to competitions across North America and meeting like-minded people previously known only through their internet connections. In later years, as their children grew and moved away from the nest, Lee discovered a new love, traveling. She loved nothing more than to pack up the motor home, and together with Gerry, go searching for new places to camp - driving across Canada and the U.S.A., visiting places they had only seen in pictures or read about in books. Sitting in that front seat, telling Gerry where to go, was a rare pleasure that they planned to pursue even more as Lee wrapped up her teaching career. As her children married and started families of their own, Lee discovered a captivating new hobby … spoiling grandchildren! Kami (Kevin) Gelinas introduced her to Brenna and Paisley; while Kenny (Christy) Varty added Kelton and Lacey to the party. These four darlings knew her as ‘Nannie’, and adored spending time with her almost as much as she enjoyed time with them. She was the matriarch, the central love of our families. Loved deeply by her husband, Gerry; her daughter, Kami (husband, Kevin plus grandchildren, Brenna and Paisley); and her son, Ken (wife, Christy plus grandchildren, Kelton and Lacey). Lee is also lovingly remembered by her stepfather, Edward Brown; her sister, Chris (Gary) Vandebunte and family; and her brother, Bruce Brown. She was predeceased by both her mother, Joyce Brown and her father, Ken Woodhouse Sr. Lee believed that ‘one can never have too much family’, and so she found and reconnected with her ‘other’ family (Woodhouse); consisting of three half-brothers: Larry (Wendy), Bill (Linda), and Ken (Sharon) and their families, who all reside in Ontario. On this side, she was predeceased by her half-brother, Dave Woodhouse. Due to gathering restrictions at the time, a small, private Remembrance Service in Lee’s Honour was held. Keeping the service private was a difficult decision, arrived at after much discussion by the family. We are acutely aware of how many lives Lee touched as a teacher, a friend, a community member, a courageous, smiling patient, and a stand-in-rent-a-mom for kids young and old; and we are deeply sorry that we could not have an open, large funeral celebration for everybody to say ‘goodbye’. But, if you really knew Lee, you know that she would have everyone’s safety ranked first on her priority list … if her farewell celebration turned into a Covid super-spreader event, she would be very upset, not to mention quite capable of haunting us all for that poor decision! Those who desire may make memorial tributes in Lee’s memory to the Bentley School Breakfast Program, something Lee started and took great pride in, to help every child start the day with the security of food in their stomach with no judgment or discussion. Any donations may be made payable to the Wolf Creek School Division and mailed directly to: Cards 4 Lee, c/o Bentley School, Box 299, 5314 – 49 Street, Bentley, Alberta T0C 0J0. Please take the time to include a little anecdote, picture, story, or memory you have of Lee – even if you choose not to donate – so that we can all share those inspirations to keep her legacy alive in our hearts. Loving Lee was easy … she loved every one of us, and our lives are a little brighter because of her smile. Cremation Arrangements for the Late Alicia ‘Lee’ Varty entrusted to the care of

- INGLES
Denise Marie Ingles of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with her kids by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the age of 77 years. Denise Marie was born in Lethbridge on September 23, 1942 to Bill and Frances Collin, and resided in Warner, Alberta until she married Roy Smith in 1960. They lived in a few towns before settling in Calgary. The marriage produced four children who were the love of Denise’s life: Marty, Nancy, Jim, and Marlene. In the late 60s, Denise took on a new role of parenting, changing their lives forever. With the support of her brothers, sisters, and close friends, she chose to raise her kids on her own. She sewed most of her kid’s clothes, and always made sure they were warm and in style. Music was handed down from her mom, which Denise loved. Learning to play the guitar and having a strong will, she formed a band and played music to help support her new life. Her kids soon learned that playing music and singing, whether it was at band practice or sitting in the living room with the guitar learning another song, was Denise’s other passion. Denise eventually remarried and moved to the Rimbey area again. For many years she enjoyed life, hosting family and friends in her house at Birch Bay. With her kids all married and grandchildren on the way, she enjoyed life, but something was missing. After many years, her love for music and the western life-style once again changed her direction. Denise moved to Buck Lake where she worked alongside her daughter, Nancy and family on the Buck Lake Community Pasture. This was her true delight in life. She loved family, horses, camping, and the great outdoors. She also spent many years out at the Hummingbird area, helping with horses and trail rides. She loved it there. In the summer, she rode horses, played music, and enjoyed her now-growing family of grandchildren. She stayed on there, hand-feeding grain to 100+ bulls every day, all winter. When her sister-in-law, Sharon passed away in 2005, Denise then moved to Olds and moved in with her brother, Bud. She lived with him for thirteen wonderful years. They made an awesome team. For several years they spent their winters at their place in Mesa, Arizona. When they came back to Canada in the spring, they spent time traveling around and visiting their family and friends. In 2019, with some health concerns, they realized they could no longer spend their winters in Arizona. In September, Denise decided to move back to Rimbey into the Valley View Manor. Once again she was back playing music at every opportunity. She loved seeing her new and old friends enjoying music and making requests for songs. Denise enjoyed life. She loved colors, from colored jeans and boots to her red lawn swing on her deck. She loved sewing western shirts with her logo, ‘Barbwire Bush’; and she loved rodeos, bonfires, and country music. She was singing or humming all the time. She loved spending time with family, playing cards and games. She enjoyed her brothers and sisters. They were a close family. They got together many times throughout the years; spending time together in Arizona, at Wilbur’s cabin, and their annual family Christmas dinners. Denise will be lovingly missed, and will definitely leave a void in many people’s hearts. We love you, mom! Denise will always be remembered and sadly missed by her loving family: her children, Marty (Cindy) Smith of Chilliwack, B.C.; Nancy (Brian) Miles of High Prairie; Jim (Cheryl) Smith of High River; and Marlene (Darcy) Chalmers of Sherwood Park; as well as nine grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her siblings: three brothers, Wilbur (Edith) Collin of Beaumont; Bud Collin of Athabasca; and Terry Collin of Calgary; and two sisters, Collette (Art) McMullen of Calgary; and Catherine Stroman of Kelowna, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many, many friends. Denise was predeceased by her parents, and her oldest brother, Delbert. Small, private Family Gatherings have taken place. A public Memorial Service in Celebration of Denise’s Life was held at a later date. Denise was laid to rest in the Warner Cemetery, Warner, Alberta. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Red Lodge Guest Ranch, 34502 Range Road 22, Red Deer County, Alberta T0M 0K0 (www.redlodgeoutfitters.com); or to the Friends of the Eastern Slopes, Box 6093, Innisfail, Alberta T4G 1S7 (www.foesa.org). Richard ‘Dick’ Roy Osokin of the Homeglen District, Alberta passed away suddenly on Monday, May 11, 2020 at the age of 74 years. Dick was born and raised wreaking havoc in Homeglen with his siblings his entire childhood! He attended the Homeglen School for Grades 1 to 6, Sylvan Heights for Grades 6 to 10, and the Ponoka High School for Grades 11 and 12. It was during his high school years that Dick developed into a high-profile football player, sought after during his time playing with the Edmonton Huskies. Sport did not trump his ability to master other skills; including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and just about anything else! A jack-of-all-trades and a master of all, Dick used his skills to assist anyone who needed his help. He met the love of his life, Frances McCall while working at the Ponoka Hospital. Despite thinking he was a patient, Dick won her over and they were inseparable from that point on. They settled on Dick’s childhood farm and built a new life for their family, becoming a well-known and loved couple within the community. Dick was employed full-time with his job at the Rimbey Gas Plant as a respected maintenance foreman, as well as maintaining his full-time job farming. He had a very strong work ethic, teaching his daughters early on that, “there’s no such thing as ‘can’t’ - just ‘won’t’!” As an avid motorcyclist, Dick eventually encouraged Fran to join him on the bike to embark on new adventures for the couple. That, and his passion for golf, filled his life with joy. Dick was well-respected, known for his love of a good time, and for always lending a helping hand. Dick will always be remembered and greatly missed by his loving daughters, Michelle Osokin (Andre Doornbos) of Castlegar, B.C. and their daughter, Edie; and Leanne Osokin (David DeRosa) also of Castlegar, B.C. and their children, Marlo and Marcus. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his two sisters, Maggie Leladharsingh of Edmonton; and Joanne (Brent) Thirsk of Ponoka; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other family members, and a host of close friends and neighbours. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Joan; his beloved wife, Fran in 2016; and his older brother, Bob. A Gathering of Family and Friends to Celebrate Dick’s Life was held at a later date. In Dick’s memory, the Family has asked that we all extend a helping hand to our friends and neighbours … as Dick would have always done. - PERLITZ
‘Bill’ Billy Jack Perlitz of Blackfalds, Alberta passed away at his home on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at the age of 42 years. Bill was born at the Bentley Hospital and went home to Rimbey. Growing up, he loved to skidoo. When Bill was just three years old, he would wake up and put his skidoo suit on over his PJ’s, put his snow boots on with no socks, and go outside and sit on the skidoo waiting for his dad to get up and take him for a ride. A short time later when the family was landscaping a new lot for a mobile home, Bill’s dad, Paul, was building a fence. Bill was trying to help by giving his dad boards, but he kept taking boards from only one side of the pile in the wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow eventually tipped over, pinning Bill’s head between the handle of the wheelbarrow and the side of the trailer. On another occasion, Paul was filling the garden tractor with gas to use it, stepping into the trailer for a moment only to realize that meanwhile, little Bill was putting dirt into the gas tank to help out his dad! The family moved to Edmonton when Bill was 3 or 4 years old, where he started school and made many life-long friends. He played hockey and baseball, and loved to skateboard. Bill was 15 when they relocated to Lacombe, and three months later his parents separated. Bill had kept a sense of humour through it all and said, “At least we all get a vacuum.” (Paul was famous for not saying ‘no’ to a salesman.) Bill left school and moved to Provost with his dad and started his working career. He worked service rigs for several years and then went into the drywall business, which eventually was too hard on his body. Bill was a perfectionist at everything he did and was a hard worker. He absolutely adored his animals, and loved his three dogs and cat immensely. They were Bill’s pride and joy. He lost his dog and best friend, Charlie, on October 17, 2019. As soon as the owner of the dog that was mothering Charlie’s puppies found out, she called Bill and offered him his pick of the litter. Bill selected a female pup that was mainly white and had similar markings as Charlie. As soon as we saw her, we knew she’d be named, ‘Charlie’s Angel’. Bill’s niece, Kayla, affectionately writes: “When I hear the name Billy Jack Perlitz, I don’t see the young boy that grandma raised, I don’t see the brother that mom grew up with. I see my uncle. I see my friend. He was the most giving person that I know, and he always put others before himself. He never denied anybody help, no matter the circumstances. Oh, and he always had to have his chocolate ice cream and Slurpee! He will forever be missed by all that knew him. Love you, Bill.” Bill will always be remembered by his loving family: his mother, Donna Perlitz of Blackfalds; his father, Paul Perlitz of Provost; and his older sister, Stacey Dawe of Blackfalds; as well as his treasured niece and nephew, Kayla and Dylan Dawe, also of Blackfalds; and many other relatives and close friends. Bill was predeceased by his grandparents. With respect to the wishes of Bill’s family, no formal funeral service was held. Bill was laid to rest in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Bentley at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Bill’s Memory may be made directly to the Central Alberta Humane Society, 4505 – 77 Street, Red Deer, Alberta T4P 2J1 (www.cahumane.com). - LONGMAN
With deeply saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Brooke-Lynn ‘Brookie’ Longman of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Too soon and too young she was taken from us at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the age of 12 years. Brooke-Lynn was born at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on January 28, 2007 to Jamie and Jared Longman. She came into this world loving her family with everything she had. For those who were touched by Brooke-Lynn’s love, a special bond was intertwined into everything she did with you. We believe it takes a community to raise a child, and Brooke-Lynn’s community was built on a circle of loyalty, fierce friendship, and plenty of fun! She was always so helpful, especially if it involved taking care of babies or hanging out with her cousins. Brooke was so good with animals, especially Blue and Spaz. No matter what she was doing, she was caring and loving. Brooke-Lynn took great pride in her active lifestyle. Her athleticism was showcased through cheer, swimming, dance, and climbing mountains. Basically anything she tried. She was inseparable from her dear friends Hayden, Kira, Abby, and Teagan. They bonded through their many years in French Immersion at Steffie Woima. Brooke-Lynn’s claim to fame this year was making the senior basketball team while being a junior. She made sure to remind her older sisters, Zoey and Daytona of her achievement daily. Such a proud moment in the Longman household. Brooke-Lynn was taken from us far, far too soon. She will forever remain in our hearts and in our lives. She made a profound impact on everyone she graced with her beautiful soul. She made her entrance into heaven on December 19, 2019. It won’t take long for the angels to realize what an amazing gift they received; a ready-made angel. Much love to our precious Brookie forever and always! “Now she flies with the butterflies” Brooke-Lynn’s community was large and loving. She will be greatly missed and remembered forever by her parents, Jared and Jamie; and her two sisters and best friends, Daytona (Isaiah) and Zoey. She will also be sadly missed by her aunts and uncles, Angelique (Dean) Power and their son, Nicholas; Shannon (Avery) Lozowy and their family, Max, Sam, and Allena; Norris (Lindsay) Longman and their family, Nixon and Masen; and Alex (Andrea) Longman and their family, Madison and Owen; as well as her grandparents, Patrick Summers, Sheilagh (John) Detka, Cliff (Vivian) Longman, her GG, Annette Lapointe; in addition to many cherished friends and other relatives. - HOLLAND
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kenneth Ray Holland of Rimbey, Alberta on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the age of 78 years. Ken was born at Rocky Mountain House and spent his youth on the family farm, seven miles north and east of Leslieville. He attended the Blueberry Valley School, south of the farm, for his education. Ken worked for a few years helping farmers around the Benalto and Leslieville Districts with farm chores. He also worked a few years as a mobile grain cleaner for one farmer. Ken was then employed for nine years for the Alberta Wheat Pool elevators at Bentley, Wetaskiwin, Breton, and Huxley, buying grain. In the fall of 1974, he moved his family north to Fort McMurray where he first worked at Great Canadian Oil Sands, then for Suncor when they bought out G.C.O.S. Ken was employed there for 21 years as a heavy equipment operator and trainer in the Athabasca Tar Sands. He met and was united in marriage to Vivian Hunter on July 11, 1962 in Bentley, and together they raised two children. Countless weekends were spent enjoying the outdoors; hunting and camping where lots of stories were told around the bonfires, as well as fishing and triking the wilderness around Fort McMurray and other places the family treasured. Ken took pleasure in working in additional various fields over the years: carpentry work, pumping gas at a garage, and even on a seismic crew for a while; but, one of his greatest passions was restoring old John Deere tractors. Ken and Vivian moved to Rimbey in August of 1995, and enjoyed residing here ever since. Ken loved his volunteer work with the Rimbey Historical Society, the Rimbey Fish and Game Association, and at the Senior’s Drop In Centre. Many lasting and special friendships came from all those hard-working years. Ken will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife of 55 years, Vivian; his son, Thomas (Tracy) Holland and cherished grandson, Zachary of Athabasca; and his daughter, Sherry Holland (Donald Wenzak) of Edmonton; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many special friends. Ken was predeceased by his father, Thomas in 1963; and his mother, Mary in 1979. All his siblings were born in England and Ken was the only child born in Canada. He is also predeceased by his four older sisters: Mary, Lillian, Elizabeth, and Daisy; and his brother, Thomas. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Ken’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. - BURROWS
With family by her side, Josephine “Josie” Virginia Burrows of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Josie was born at home on the Door Key Ranch near Fort Macleod, Alberta on September 20, 1930. She was the fourth child in a family of nine children born to Jim and Mary McNab. Josie always spoke with fondness of her childhood on the ranch; telling stories of cleaning house, cooking for the threshing crews, famous visitors, and riding horseback to school. She met the love of her life, Vern Burrows, while attending high school in Fort Macleod and they were united in marriage on June 1, 1949. To this special union, seven children were born ~ six daughters and one son! It was a household always full of activity, and Josie was kept busy tending to her family. Over the years they lived in various locations, where Josie and Vern were employed in the theatre industry. They settled in Lacombe in 1968, where they resided for 18 years and together operated the Lux Theatre. During that time, Josie obtained her floral design certification and they owned and operated a flower shop as well. In 1986, semi-retirement relocated them to Red Deer where they lived for many years. Vern passed away in 2001, but it wasn’t until a fall broke Josie’s hip that she moved to Rimbey in 2011. She loved the independence of living in her own home, and did so until this past April. Josie loved flowers and her garden, liked to can and pickle, and made great Christmas cakes. She was also an accomplished seamstress, liked to knit, enjoyed crisply ironed white blouses, bingo, and in her later years she was an avid reader - where a compelling book held tremendous appeal! Josie had a good life, living it mostly on her own terms. She had an unending faith, worked hard, and loved harder. Josie’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren filled her life and her heart with the greatest joy. Josie will be forever remembered and sadly missed by her loving family. They say that ‘Mothers are like buttons...they hold everything together’, so this loss is very much felt by Josie’s 7 children who will miss her always: her son, Greg (Michelle) Burrows of Stettler; and her 6 daughters, Dianna (Bill) Harrison of Calgary; Judy (Henry) Reddecopp of Rimbey; Cindy (Terry) Hays of Olds; Theresa Pletz (Darren Damiani) of Rimbey; Michelle (Laverne) Oberhammer also of Rimbey; and Patti (Axel) Nossack of Red Deer. Her most precious gifts were her 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, with another on the way; 3 step-great grandchildren; as well as 2 step-great-great grandchildren. Every single one of them will dearly miss their ‘GiGi’. Josie will also be lovingly remembered by 6 sisters, Grace Kennedy of Fort Macleod; Marjorie MacLennan of Calgary; Betty Gregory of High River; Ruby (Eric) Thomsen of Scotch Creek, B.C.; Jean Anderson of Fort Macleod; and Bonnie (Jim) Murphy of Calgary; and her brother-in-law, Don Sterling of Campbell River, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. Josie was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Mary; her beloved husband, Vern; 2 great grandsons, Oak and Connor; her brother, Bob; her sister, Pat Sterling; and many in-laws and other extended family members. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Father Les Drewicki, Celebrant. Interment followed at 3:00 p.m. in the Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer. - GIEBELHAUS
Reuben Edward Giebelhaus of Rimbey, Alberta went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Monday, January 20, 2020, just shy of 97 years. He passed away quietly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre after courageously battling a relentless infection. Reuben was born at home on February 5, 1923, the first son of John A. and Elizabeth (Miller) Giebelhaus of the Martins District near Vegreville and Holden, Alberta. He farmed the Holden homestead in Beaver County along with his wife, Elsie (Fried) whom he married on November 7, 1947. In 2019, Reuben and Elsie celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Reuben was a hard-working, industrious, God-loving man who adapted throughout his journey. He dispersed his cattle and moved to Kelowna for one year (1955) for his son’s health, returned to the farm to rebuild, dispersed his cattle again and rented the farm and moved to Stony Plain in 1965, relocated to Sherwood Park (1967), and then settled in Rimbey since 1974. Reuben and Elsie originally moved to Rimbey to work with his brother, Earl pioneering in embryo transplants on exotic cattle through the company L.I. Ranches. While farming and cattle (often referred to as his first love by his wife) played key roles throughout, Reuben also owned Tydewater Lumber (Rimbey), built two homes (Rimbey), including their current house at age 77, and developed the most southern subdivision of Rimbey with Earl in the late 70s. Many will remember him by the yellow hard hat he wore, his love of music and singing, and the opinions he voiced freely. He and Elsie enjoyed unique travel experiences and opportunities; including trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Hawaii. From the book he wrote at age 89, “I feel we have had a very interesting and educational life, and given the chance to live my life over, I think I would make the same decisions.” He jokingly summed up his story with, “Elsie, not so sure – maybe the title of this story should have read, ‘We Did It My Way’.” Reuben was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings: Edna, Harold, and Mildred. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Elsie; and five children: Carolyn Parker, Glen, Rodney, Rowena Hoeve, and Dale, and their spouses, who gifted him with fourteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. He will also be remembered by four siblings: Ruth, Dorothy, Earl, and Lorraine; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. A Funeral Service Celebration of Reuben’s Life will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Rimbey on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Grant Rainey officiating. - WOLLENBERG
Günter Wollenberg of the Yeoford District, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, November 6, 2020. Günter was born in Germany in June, 1932. At the age of 21 years, together with his friend, Ernie, they decided to immigrate to Canada. Their idea was to only stay a short while, with adventures in New Zealand and Australia being the next part of their plan, but Canada didn’t let them go anywhere! They loved it and stayed! Günter worked for many years in Saskatchewan. He first worked in Fisk, and then later worked with the Goldsmith family in Hoosier. It was at a house party in Kindersley, where Günter met the love of his life, Ilse, and in November, 1963 they were united in marriage. In 1967, Günter and Ilse relocated to Alberta and worked for Keith and Lois Rosenberger, and later for Dale and Beth Massie. Over the years, Günter remained friends with all those he worked for. Günter and Ilse started their family with the birth of their first daughter, Victoria, and Tracy followed a short 14 months later. Having two daughters was his biggest joy! They were very active in the Balzac United Church, and the deep friendships they formed in the Balzac community lasted the rest of their lives. They became truly Canadian! Their dream of owning their own piece of land came true when Günter and his twin sister, Christel inherited some money after the death of their parents. A piece of land in Yeoford became a reality in 1981, and Günter and Ilse moved there permanently in 1991 – with 20+ pregnant cattle in tow! Many happy years were spent building strong friendships in Yeoford and area. In 2018, as Günter’s health deteriorated with a mild stroke and dementia, he stopped farming and rented out the pasture to trusted neighbours. Ilse looked after him full-time until July, 2020 when Günter moved into Rimbey Long Term Care. Despite the excellent care he received, he passed away at 88 years young. Günter and Ilse would have celebrated 57 years of marriage. Günter will be forever remembered and greatly missed by his loving family: his beloved wife, Ilse; and his two daughters, Victoria (Kevin) Walkes of Calgary; and Tracy (Todd) Robertson also of Calgary; as well as four cherished grandchildren: Kurt, Evangeline, Hannah, and Zoe; in addition to several other relatives and many close friends. Günter was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Hedwig; and his twin sister, Christel in 2020. A Gathering of Family and Friends to Celebrate Günter’s Life will be held in the Summer of 2021. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Günter’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Health Services Donations Program, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com). - SHANK
Clair Shank would like to advise everyone that his work here is done. On Friday, January 31, 2020, while in his 89th year, Clarence ‘Clair’ Rosario Shank took a call from a higher power to travel to an urgent appointment from which he will not be returning. He was sitting in his favorite chair watching the news at the Rocky View Lodge in Crossfield, Alberta when the call came in. As Clair was mostly deaf, his were the only ears the call was for. We know he is delighted to trade in his Alberta Government pension for a reunion with the absolute love of his life, Rosalind ‘Rose’ Shank (nee Benz), as well as his beloved siblings and other friends and family. Born in Athabasca, Alberta on April 16, 1930, Clair was the youngest child of Eddie Gideon Shank and Rosanna Goulet. Growing up on a farm meant a lot of hard work, but the benefit was a tremendous amount of learned skills. At age 14, Clair helped his brother, Terry build an entire house in Tawatinaw, Alberta. His mother had other ideas for her youngest, however, and Clair was encouraged to finish his high school education. To save his exceedingly good looks from the family sport of boxing, Clarence quickly distinguished himself as an accomplished athlete pitching softball, and took his team to the Provincials. He earned pocket money by hustling at the local pool hall, and was a successful actor and student politician at Athabasca High. He charmed everyone. A love of motorcycles had him set off cross-country on a black Triumph Trophy Twin after graduation to seek fame and fortune, stopping along the way to work and fund his travels. He found love. Working as a psychiatric aide in the criminally insane division of the Weyburn Mental Hospital in Saskatchewan, he met a psychiatric nurse, Rosalind, at a staff dance. They danced. They fell in love. He left. Clarence later travelled to central Saskatchewan to ask permission from Rosalind’s father for her hand in marriage. He returned and proposed. To be worthy of her (and to be able to earn more than her), he enlisted in the Air Force as an officer and reported for boot camp in London, Ontario. After training in Clinton, Ontario as a radio operator for ten months, he was chosen as a marker for the show drill for Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh’s royal visit at Trenton, Ontario. Rosalind was stunned to see her betrothed on the big screen during a video clip before the feature film at a Saskatchewan theatre. Hundreds of love letters inherited by the family attest to their long- distance romance and commitment to each other. Clarence and Rosalind eloped to Montreal on April 5, 1952 during a two-week break in officer training. A telegram to Clair’s family left everyone wondering who he had married, as it was signed only, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Shank’. Relocation found them in Edmonton after Clair was posted to 435 Transport Squadron, which circulated the ‘Fly Boys’ to a ground squad. He was 21 years old. As a radio operator in his Air Force career, Clarence flew all over the world and survived several crashes and near misses. Roxanne was born, and the decision was made for Clair to hang up his flight suit and attend the University of Alberta as a mature student, upon which he completed a B.Sc. and a B.Ed. in 1960. He was the first person in his family to earn a university degree, and the only graduate with a five-year-old daughter in the audience of adults. Clair worked as a teacher in Saskatchewan, and then joined the Federal Government in Ottawa in 1964. The water was good in Ottawa, and the family quickly added Calla and Meritt. Clair relocated the family back to Alberta in 1973 with his new position with the City of Calgary, and then to Edmonton in 1976 with the Alberta Provincial Government in the Lougheed years. His natural leadership and a succession of promotions resulted in Clair’s position as Assistant Deputy Minister of the Attorney General’s Department at the time of his retirement in 1987. Likely, he was the only cowboy gracing the halls of the legislature with his signature western style. Clarence and Rosalind retired to Parkland Beach and enjoyed 23 happy years at Gull Lake, Alberta. Unexpectedly, Clair became a widower after 59 years of marriage, and spent his remaining years at Cedarwood Station in Airdrie, and most recently, Rocky View Manor in Crossfield. He continued to drive, was a prodigious reader, enjoyed his weekly dinners with Meritt and Shelley, his visits from his children and grandchildren, as well as staying informed and debating current events. A self-professed ‘news junkie’, he remained engaged with the world at a level higher than any of his three children. Clair was keenly intelligent and generous with his time, knowledge, resources, and love. He was exceedingly proud of his family; and remained an active father, grandfather, and great grandfather until mom called him home. One always knew the social group that Clair belonged to. In business, he was Clair; to his Air Force buddies, he was Rosie; to his siblings, he was Clarence; to his kids, he was simply Dad. A strong, tall man who took the time to acknowledge everyone he interacted with, who had a large laugh, and was alternately amused and irritated by people’s poor choices, especially politicians. In his younger years, Clair could dance a mean jive and could recite all of ‘The Shooting of Dan McGee’, as well as sing Tennessee Ernie Ford’s ‘Sixteen Tons’ in a beautiful baritone. He made sure his kids had all the life skills he could impart; whether learning to drive a car, wiring an outlet, shooting a rifle, picking rocks out of the family vegetable garden, filling out tax returns, wielding a chain saw, or drafting a resumé. A study in contradictions, Clair enjoyed fishing, but didn’t eat fish; chose to live by the lake, but couldn’t swim; taught theology, but was conflicted; was outwardly gregarious, but naturally shy. He encouraged everyone to plan for tomorrow, but live for today. Clarence will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Roxanne Shank (Murray Kammer) of Egbert, Ontario; and Calla Shank-Hogue (Mike Magnus) of Greenwich, Nova Scotia; and his son, Meritt (Shelley) Shank of Airdrie; as well as the gifts of his six grandchildren: Forrest Kammer, Rheiner Kammer, Skye Shank, Chad Shank, Jasper Hogue, and Zoe Hogue; and three great grandchildren: Kaleb Shank, Addisyn Shank, and Mason Shank; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and friends. Clarence rejoins his parents, wife, twelve siblings, and his son-in-law. The family wishes to thank the caring and dedicated staff of the Rocky View Lodge in Crossfield, as well as Dr. Odubanjo. Also greatly appreciated is the help and compassion of Sonja McAlpin and Laverne Oberhammer. A Public Graveside Service in Celebration of Clarence’s Life will be held at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Sonja McAlpin, Life Celebrant. A reception will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Clarence’s Memory may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5; (www.cancer.ca); or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #202, 5913 – 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4C4 (www.heartandstroke.ca). Bill Vik of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the age of 89 years. The following was written by Bill, himself: My Life by Bill Vik “I was delivered into this world on May 20, 1930 in the Taber Hospital to my parents, Joseph and Teresa Vik. My parents immigrated from Hungary. My grandfather was the first to arrive in the 1920s, followed by my father in 1926. My mother followed in 1928 with my brother, Joe and my uncle, John. They were sponsored by Ted Allen who owned a farm east of Taber on which my grandfather, my father, and Uncle John all worked. I do not recollect my early years on this farm. I recall moving to a farm two miles west of Taber, to another farm owned by the Malloe’s. They owned and ran the lumber yard in Taber. My best recollection was when I started school in Barnwell in 1937, and remember walking to the school bus in the cold winter, a half-mile walk. I do not recollect anything of importance happening on this farm other than our walk to Taber to the movies every Saturday afternoon to the matinee, which was 25 cents. My next note of interest was our move to a farm north of Barnwell. This farm was purchased by my father and uncle, jointly. How they managed this, I will never know as they were dirt poor. By now our family was complete when Bert and George were born on this farm. Brother, Joe, myself, and Barney – which made five boys. Growing up on this farm and going to school was very hard, as I spent a lot of time away from school helping on the farm. When I left school, I enrolled in a vocational school in Edmonton studying diesel automotives. After I received my diploma, I returned to Taber and went to work for Campbell Electric as an apprentice electrician. I never followed the things I studied in Edmonton, but it gave me a lot of experience on engines, which served me well, and I never regretted taking the course. In 1950, I left Campbell Electric and went to work for Calgary Power, as it was known then. I started on July 20, 1950, and worked in the district office in Taber, then spent time on the construction crew, from there to the Picture Butte district, then back to the Taber district office. While in Taber, I met and married by wife (Winifred Jackson). We were married on November 11, 1953. Our children were all born in Taber; Brian in 1956, Cathy in 1959, and James in 1964. We built two homes and a four-suite apartment block during our time in Taber. In 1965, we were on the move again to Lacombe. This move lasted a year and a half, and then we moved to the farm known in the area as the original Rimbey Farm, ½ mile west. This was our last move with TransAlta Utilities, as I retired in 1982 after 32 years. Retirement did not work for me, so I went out and bought a truck and Caterpillar tractor which I worked for a couple of years. I ended up selling the equipment. The Rimbey Farm, which we had been renting, came up for sale and we were given first option to buy it, which we did. I worked the farm and worked for TransAlta for 20 years. After I left TransAlta, I went to work during the summer for Alberta Hail and Crop as an adjuster for a couple of years, then moving on to work as an inspector for the Apiculture Department as a bee inspector for a couple more years. I had considerable knowledge in this field as I had kept bees for 25 years, starting in Taber. In 1992, we sold 142 acres of the 230, and we had approx. 75 acres left. We started a driving range and golf course on the 75 acres, and operated it for seven years. In 2008, we sold the 75 acres and the golf course, keeping one acre where our present house is located. During my life, I have belonged to several organizations in all the communities we have lived. In Taber: the Kinsmen Club, Fire Department, and Curling Club; in Lacombe: the Curling Club, and Masonic Lodge; and in Rimbey: the Lions Club, Curling Club, and Masonic Lodge. To this day, January 8, 2015, we still reside in Rimbey.” Bill will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 66 years, Winifred; and his three children: Brian (Janice) Vik of Edmonton; Cathy (Jeff) Bryant of Lacombe; and James Vik (Elaine Mcinnes) of Edmonton; as well as six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two brothers, Barney (Tootsie) Vik of Taber; and George (Marilyn) Vik of Chilliwack, B.C.; his sister-in-law, Helen Vik of Calgary; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and several close friends. Bill was predeceased by his two brothers, Joe and Bert. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at the Rimbey Christian Reformed Church, Rimbey on Monday, January 27, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend David Holmes officiating. He will be laid to rest in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey at a later date.
