- HOLLAND
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kenneth Ray Holland of Rimbey, Alberta on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the age of 78 years. Ken was born at Rocky Mountain House and spent his youth on the family farm, seven miles north and east of Leslieville. He attended the Blueberry Valley School, south of the farm, for his education. Ken worked for a few years helping farmers around the Benalto and Leslieville Districts with farm chores. He also worked a few years as a mobile grain cleaner for one farmer. Ken was then employed for nine years for the Alberta Wheat Pool elevators at Bentley, Wetaskiwin, Breton, and Huxley, buying grain. In the fall of 1974, he moved his family north to Fort McMurray where he first worked at Great Canadian Oil Sands, then for Suncor when they bought out G.C.O.S. Ken was employed there for 21 years as a heavy equipment operator and trainer in the Athabasca Tar Sands. He met and was united in marriage to Vivian Hunter on July 11, 1962 in Bentley, and together they raised two children. Countless weekends were spent enjoying the outdoors; hunting and camping where lots of stories were told around the bonfires, as well as fishing and triking the wilderness around Fort McMurray and other places the family treasured. Ken took pleasure in working in additional various fields over the years: carpentry work, pumping gas at a garage, and even on a seismic crew for a while; but, one of his greatest passions was restoring old John Deere tractors. Ken and Vivian moved to Rimbey in August of 1995, and enjoyed residing here ever since. Ken loved his volunteer work with the Rimbey Historical Society, the Rimbey Fish and Game Association, and at the Senior’s Drop In Centre. Many lasting and special friendships came from all those hard-working years. Ken will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife of 55 years, Vivian; his son, Thomas (Tracy) Holland and cherished grandson, Zachary of Athabasca; and his daughter, Sherry Holland (Donald Wenzak) of Edmonton; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many special friends. Ken was predeceased by his father, Thomas in 1963; and his mother, Mary in 1979. All his siblings were born in England and Ken was the only child born in Canada. He is also predeceased by his four older sisters: Mary, Lillian, Elizabeth, and Daisy; and his brother, Thomas. - BURROWS
With family by her side, Josephine “Josie” Virginia Burrows of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Josie was born at home on the Door Key Ranch near Fort Macleod, Alberta on September 20, 1930. She was the fourth child in a family of nine children born to Jim and Mary McNab. Josie always spoke with fondness of her childhood on the ranch; telling stories of cleaning house, cooking for the threshing crews, famous visitors, and riding horseback to school. She met the love of her life, Vern Burrows, while attending high school in Fort Macleod and they were united in marriage on June 1, 1949. To this special union, seven children were born ~ six daughters and one son! It was a household always full of activity, and Josie was kept busy tending to her family. Over the years they lived in various locations, where Josie and Vern were employed in the theatre industry. They settled in Lacombe in 1968, where they resided for 18 years and together operated the Lux Theatre. During that time, Josie obtained her floral design certification and they owned and operated a flower shop as well. In 1986, semi-retirement relocated them to Red Deer where they lived for many years. Vern passed away in 2001, but it wasn’t until a fall broke Josie’s hip that she moved to Rimbey in 2011. She loved the independence of living in her own home, and did so until this past April. Josie loved flowers and her garden, liked to can and pickle, and made great Christmas cakes. She was also an accomplished seamstress, liked to knit, enjoyed crisply ironed white blouses, bingo, and in her later years she was an avid reader - where a compelling book held tremendous appeal! Josie had a good life, living it mostly on her own terms. She had an unending faith, worked hard, and loved harder. Josie’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren filled her life and her heart with the greatest joy. Josie will be forever remembered and sadly missed by her loving family. They say that ‘Mothers are like buttons...they hold everything together’, so this loss is very much felt by Josie’s 7 children who will miss her always: her son, Greg (Michelle) Burrows of Stettler; and her 6 daughters, Dianna (Bill) Harrison of Calgary; Judy (Henry) Reddecopp of Rimbey; Cindy (Terry) Hays of Olds; Theresa Pletz (Darren Damiani) of Rimbey; Michelle (Laverne) Oberhammer also of Rimbey; and Patti (Axel) Nossack of Red Deer. Her most precious gifts were her 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, with another on the way; 3 step-great grandchildren; as well as 2 step-great-great grandchildren. Every single one of them will dearly miss their ‘GiGi’. Josie will also be lovingly remembered by 6 sisters, Grace Kennedy of Fort Macleod; Marjorie MacLennan of Calgary; Betty Gregory of High River; Ruby (Eric) Thomsen of Scotch Creek, B.C.; Jean Anderson of Fort Macleod; and Bonnie (Jim) Murphy of Calgary; and her brother-in-law, Don Sterling of Campbell River, B.C.; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. Josie was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Mary; her beloved husband, Vern; 2 great grandsons, Oak and Connor; her brother, Bob; her sister, Pat Sterling; and many in-laws and other extended family members. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Father Les Drewicki, Celebrant. - GIEBELHAUS
Reuben Edward Giebelhaus of Rimbey, Alberta went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Monday, January 20, 2020, just shy of 97 years. He passed away quietly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre after courageously battling a relentless infection. Reuben was born at home on February 5, 1923, the first son of John A. and Elizabeth (Miller) Giebelhaus of the Martins District near Vegreville and Holden, Alberta. He farmed the Holden homestead in Beaver County along with his wife, Elsie (Fried) whom he married on November 7, 1947. In 2019, Reuben and Elsie celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Reuben was a hard-working, industrious, God-loving man who adapted throughout his journey. He dispersed his cattle and moved to Kelowna for one year (1955) for his son’s health, returned to the farm to rebuild, dispersed his cattle again and rented the farm and moved to Stony Plain in 1965, relocated to Sherwood Park (1967), and then settled in Rimbey since 1974. Reuben and Elsie originally moved to Rimbey to work with his brother, Earl pioneering in embryo transplants on exotic cattle through the company L.I. Ranches. While farming and cattle (often referred to as his first love by his wife) played key roles throughout, Reuben also owned Tydewater Lumber (Rimbey), built two homes (Rimbey), including their current house at age 77, and developed the most southern subdivision of Rimbey with Earl in the late 70s. Many will remember him by the yellow hard hat he wore, his love of music and singing, and the opinions he voiced freely. He and Elsie enjoyed unique travel experiences and opportunities; including trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Hawaii. From the book he wrote at age 89, “I feel we have had a very interesting and educational life, and given the chance to live my life over, I think I would make the same decisions.” He jokingly summed up his story with, “Elsie, not so sure – maybe the title of this story should have read, ‘We Did It My Way’.” Reuben was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings: Edna, Harold, and Mildred. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Elsie; and five children: Carolyn Parker, Glen, Rodney, Rowena Hoeve, and Dale, and their spouses, who gifted him with fourteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. He will also be remembered by four siblings: Ruth, Dorothy, Earl, and Lorraine; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. A Funeral Service Celebration of Reuben’s Life will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Rimbey on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Grant Rainey officiating. A Private Family Interment will precede the service in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. We are very thankful for the compassionate care of Reuben by the doctors and staff of the Rimbey Hospital, where he was lovingly cared for during his last days. - WOLLENBERG
Günter Wollenberg of the Yeoford District, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, November 6, 2020. Günter was born in Germany in June, 1932. At the age of 21 years, together with his friend, Ernie, they decided to immigrate to Canada. Their idea was to only stay a short while, with adventures in New Zealand and Australia being the next part of their plan, but Canada didn’t let them go anywhere! They loved it and stayed! Günter worked for many years in Saskatchewan. He first worked in Fisk, and then later worked with the Goldsmith family in Hoosier. It was at a house party in Kindersley, where Günter met the love of his life, Ilse, and in November, 1963 they were united in marriage. In 1967, Günter and Ilse relocated to Alberta and worked for Keith and Lois Rosenberger, and later for Dale and Beth Massie. Over the years, Günter remained friends with all those he worked for. Günter and Ilse started their family with the birth of their first daughter, Victoria, and Tracy followed a short 14 months later. Having two daughters was his biggest joy! They were very active in the Balzac United Church, and the deep friendships they formed in the Balzac community lasted the rest of their lives. They became truly Canadian! Their dream of owning their own piece of land came true when Günter and his twin sister, Christel inherited some money after the death of their parents. A piece of land in Yeoford became a reality in 1981, and Günter and Ilse moved there permanently in 1991 – with 20+ pregnant cattle in tow! Many happy years were spent building strong friendships in Yeoford and area. In 2018, as Günter’s health deteriorated with a mild stroke and dementia, he stopped farming and rented out the pasture to trusted neighbours. Ilse looked after him full-time until July, 2020 when Günter moved into Rimbey Long Term Care. Despite the excellent care he received, he passed away at 88 years young. Günter and Ilse would have celebrated 57 years of marriage. Günter will be forever remembered and greatly missed by his loving family: his beloved wife, Ilse; and his two daughters, Victoria (Kevin) Walkes of Calgary; and Tracy (Todd) Robertson also of Calgary; as well as four cherished grandchildren: Kurt, Evangeline, Hannah, and Zoe; in addition to several other relatives and many close friends. Günter was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Hedwig; and his twin sister, Christel in 2020. A Gathering of Family and Friends to Celebrate Günter’s Life will be held in the Summer of 2021. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Günter’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Health Services Donations Program, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com). - SHANK
Clair Shank would like to advise everyone that his work here is done. On Friday, January 31, 2020, while in his 89th year, Clarence ‘Clair’ Rosario Shank took a call from a higher power to travel to an urgent appointment from which he will not be returning. He was sitting in his favorite chair watching the news at the Rocky View Lodge in Crossfield, Alberta when the call came in. As Clair was mostly deaf, his were the only ears the call was for. We know he is delighted to trade in his Alberta Government pension for a reunion with the absolute love of his life, Rosalind ‘Rose’ Shank (nee Benz), as well as his beloved siblings and other friends and family. Born in Athabasca, Alberta on April 16, 1930, Clair was the youngest child of Eddie Gideon Shank and Rosanna Goulet. Growing up on a farm meant a lot of hard work, but the benefit was a tremendous amount of learned skills. At age 14, Clair helped his brother, Terry build an entire house in Tawatinaw, Alberta. His mother had other ideas for her youngest, however, and Clair was encouraged to finish his high school education. To save his exceedingly good looks from the family sport of boxing, Clarence quickly distinguished himself as an accomplished athlete pitching softball, and took his team to the Provincials. He earned pocket money by hustling at the local pool hall, and was a successful actor and student politician at Athabasca High. He charmed everyone. A love of motorcycles had him set off cross-country on a black Triumph Trophy Twin after graduation to seek fame and fortune, stopping along the way to work and fund his travels. He found love. Working as a psychiatric aide in the criminally insane division of the Weyburn Mental Hospital in Saskatchewan, he met a psychiatric nurse, Rosalind, at a staff dance. They danced. They fell in love. He left. Clarence later travelled to central Saskatchewan to ask permission from Rosalind’s father for her hand in marriage. He returned and proposed. To be worthy of her (and to be able to earn more than her), he enlisted in the Air Force as an officer and reported for boot camp in London, Ontario. After training in Clinton, Ontario as a radio operator for ten months, he was chosen as a marker for the show drill for Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh’s royal visit at Trenton, Ontario. Rosalind was stunned to see her betrothed on the big screen during a video clip before the feature film at a Saskatchewan theatre. Hundreds of love letters inherited by the family attest to their long- distance romance and commitment to each other. Clarence and Rosalind eloped to Montreal on April 5, 1952 during a two-week break in officer training. A telegram to Clair’s family left everyone wondering who he had married, as it was signed only, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Shank’. Relocation found them in Edmonton after Clair was posted to 435 Transport Squadron, which circulated the ‘Fly Boys’ to a ground squad. He was 21 years old. As a radio operator in his Air Force career, Clarence flew all over the world and survived several crashes and near misses. Roxanne was born, and the decision was made for Clair to hang up his flight suit and attend the University of Alberta as a mature student, upon which he completed a B.Sc. and a B.Ed. in 1960. He was the first person in his family to earn a university degree, and the only graduate with a five-year-old daughter in the audience of adults. Clair worked as a teacher in Saskatchewan, and then joined the Federal Government in Ottawa in 1964. The water was good in Ottawa, and the family quickly added Calla and Meritt. Clair relocated the family back to Alberta in 1973 with his new position with the City of Calgary, and then to Edmonton in 1976 with the Alberta Provincial Government in the Lougheed years. His natural leadership and a succession of promotions resulted in Clair’s position as Assistant Deputy Minister of the Attorney General’s Department at the time of his retirement in 1987. Likely, he was the only cowboy gracing the halls of the legislature with his signature western style. Clarence and Rosalind retired to Parkland Beach and enjoyed 23 happy years at Gull Lake, Alberta. Unexpectedly, Clair became a widower after 59 years of marriage, and spent his remaining years at Cedarwood Station in Airdrie, and most recently, Rocky View Manor in Crossfield. He continued to drive, was a prodigious reader, enjoyed his weekly dinners with Meritt and Shelley, his visits from his children and grandchildren, as well as staying informed and debating current events. A self-professed ‘news junkie’, he remained engaged with the world at a level higher than any of his three children. Clair was keenly intelligent and generous with his time, knowledge, resources, and love. He was exceedingly proud of his family; and remained an active father, grandfather, and great grandfather until mom called him home. One always knew the social group that Clair belonged to. In business, he was Clair; to his Air Force buddies, he was Rosie; to his siblings, he was Clarence; to his kids, he was simply Dad. A strong, tall man who took the time to acknowledge everyone he interacted with, who had a large laugh, and was alternately amused and irritated by people’s poor choices, especially politicians. In his younger years, Clair could dance a mean jive and could recite all of ‘The Shooting of Dan McGee’, as well as sing Tennessee Ernie Ford’s ‘Sixteen Tons’ in a beautiful baritone. He made sure his kids had all the life skills he could impart; whether learning to drive a car, wiring an outlet, shooting a rifle, picking rocks out of the family vegetable garden, filling out tax returns, wielding a chain saw, or drafting a resumé. A study in contradictions, Clair enjoyed fishing, but didn’t eat fish; chose to live by the lake, but couldn’t swim; taught theology, but was conflicted; was outwardly gregarious, but naturally shy. He encouraged everyone to plan for tomorrow, but live for today. Clarence will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Roxanne Shank (Murray Kammer) of Egbert, Ontario; and Calla Shank-Hogue (Mike Magnus) of Greenwich, Nova Scotia; and his son, Meritt (Shelley) Shank of Airdrie; as well as the gifts of his six grandchildren: Forrest Kammer, Rheiner Kammer, Skye Shank, Chad Shank, Jasper Hogue, and Zoe Hogue; and three great grandchildren: Kaleb Shank, Addisyn Shank, and Mason Shank; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and friends. Clarence rejoins his parents, wife, twelve siblings, and his son-in-law. The family wishes to thank the caring and dedicated staff of the Rocky View Lodge in Crossfield, as well as Dr. Odubanjo. Also greatly appreciated is the help and compassion of Sonja McAlpin and Laverne Oberhammer. A Public Graveside Service in Celebration of Clarence’s Life will be held at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Sonja McAlpin, Life Celebrant. A reception will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Clarence’s Memory may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5; (www.cancer.ca); or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #202, 5913 – 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4C4 (www.heartandstroke.ca). - VIK
Bill Vik of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the age of 89 years. The following was written by Bill, himself: My Life by Bill Vik “I was delivered into this world on May 20, 1930 in the Taber Hospital to my parents, Joseph and Teresa Vik. My parents immigrated from Hungary. My grandfather was the first to arrive in the 1920s, followed by my father in 1926. My mother followed in 1928 with my brother, Joe and my uncle, John. They were sponsored by Ted Allen who owned a farm east of Taber on which my grandfather, my father, and Uncle John all worked. I do not recollect my early years on this farm. I recall moving to a farm two miles west of Taber, to another farm owned by the Malloe’s. They owned and ran the lumber yard in Taber. My best recollection was when I started school in Barnwell in 1937, and remember walking to the school bus in the cold winter, a half-mile walk. I do not recollect anything of importance happening on this farm other than our walk to Taber to the movies every Saturday afternoon to the matinee, which was 25 cents. My next note of interest was our move to a farm north of Barnwell. This farm was purchased by my father and uncle, jointly. How they managed this, I will never know as they were dirt poor. By now our family was complete when Bert and George were born on this farm. Brother, Joe, myself, and Barney – which made five boys. Growing up on this farm and going to school was very hard, as I spent a lot of time away from school helping on the farm. When I left school, I enrolled in a vocational school in Edmonton studying diesel automotives. After I received my diploma, I returned to Taber and went to work for Campbell Electric as an apprentice electrician. I never followed the things I studied in Edmonton, but it gave me a lot of experience on engines, which served me well, and I never regretted taking the course. In 1950, I left Campbell Electric and went to work for Calgary Power, as it was known then. I started on July 20, 1950, and worked in the district office in Taber, then spent time on the construction crew, from there to the Picture Butte district, then back to the Taber district office. While in Taber, I met and married by wife (Winifred Jackson). We were married on November 11, 1953. Our children were all born in Taber; Brian in 1956, Cathy in 1959, and James in 1964. We built two homes and a four-suite apartment block during our time in Taber. In 1965, we were on the move again to Lacombe. This move lasted a year and a half, and then we moved to the farm known in the area as the original Rimbey Farm, ½ mile west. This was our last move with TransAlta Utilities, as I retired in 1982 after 32 years. Retirement did not work for me, so I went out and bought a truck and Caterpillar tractor which I worked for a couple of years. I ended up selling the equipment. The Rimbey Farm, which we had been renting, came up for sale and we were given first option to buy it, which we did. I worked the farm and worked for TransAlta for 20 years. After I left TransAlta, I went to work during the summer for Alberta Hail and Crop as an adjuster for a couple of years, then moving on to work as an inspector for the Apiculture Department as a bee inspector for a couple more years. I had considerable knowledge in this field as I had kept bees for 25 years, starting in Taber. In 1992, we sold 142 acres of the 230, and we had approx. 75 acres left. We started a driving range and golf course on the 75 acres, and operated it for seven years. In 2008, we sold the 75 acres and the golf course, keeping one acre where our present house is located. During my life, I have belonged to several organizations in all the communities we have lived. In Taber: the Kinsmen Club, Fire Department, and Curling Club; in Lacombe: the Curling Club, and Masonic Lodge; and in Rimbey: the Lions Club, Curling Club, and Masonic Lodge. To this day, January 8, 2015, we still reside in Rimbey.” Bill will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 66 years, Winifred; and his three children: Brian (Janice) Vik of Edmonton; Cathy (Jeff) Bryant of Lacombe; and James Vik (Elaine Mcinnes) of Edmonton; as well as six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. It is with great sadness that the family of Roger ‘Ramjet’ Edward Outten, of Gull Lake, Alberta, announces his passing after a brave battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at the age of 74 years. Roger was born on July 30, 1945 in Brooks, Alberta and grew up in nearby Duchess. He was a seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy, before a 30-year career with the Calgary Fire Department where he retired as a Captain. During his three-year stint in the Navy, Roger met the love of his life, Mary Kathleen Roebuck. They met in Burnaby, British Columbia, and shortly after, in 1964, the pair were united in marriage. Since then they have had many adventures together, including raising their two children, James and Teresa. Roger was a golfer, an unofficial photographer, and a king of chili cook-offs. He was also a capable carpenter and could build, fix, and fabricate just about anything. For the last 15 years, Roger and Mary did exactly what they always wanted to do – they travelled the world together, circumnavigating the globe numerous times while making footprints in 6 of the 7 continents. Roger made an impression on those he met wherever they went, and he leaves behind friends all around the world. Roger will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, Mary, as they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on December 19, 2019. He will also be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughter, Teresa (Rob) Simpson of Leslieville; his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Outten of Stony Plain; five grandchildren: Jennifer, William (Jenilee), Clayton, Joel (Aimee), and Jared; four great grandchildren: Tessa, Isaiah, Audie, and Tyson; as well as his brother, Ron Outten of Saskatchewan; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. - SODERBERG
Leonard Clarence ‘Gary’ Soderberg of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Gary was born in Rimbey on February 26, 1942. The following was written by Gary, himself: "Lived in Iola area for first year. Then moved to Red Deer with my younger sister, Gail and my parents, Clarence and Hazel Soderberg in 1943. Grew up in, and took my schooling in Red Deer, Alberta. Grades 1 and 2 at Old North Red Deer School, Grades 3 to 7 at Central School, Red Deer, Grades 8 and 9 at River Glen High School, high school at Lindsey Thurber Composite High School. I then left after two semesters in Grade 10 to commence my working career. I completed my grade 12 GED in 1987, and had the pleasure of sharing the same graduation year as my daughter. I did a lot of odd jobs when I was a kid trying to earn a buck. At nine years old, I sold newspapers on the street, then became a rink rat at the arena for a while. I worked as an usher at three movie theaters. I worked for the D.P.W. at P.T.S. (now Michener Centre) as a laborer, then got on as a ward attendant at D.T.S. and Deerhome. After leaving Deerhome, I worked at many jobs: pump jockey, beer parlor waiter, taxi driver, with my dad on the farm, doing house construction and renovations. I earned my credentials as an insurance adjuster, but didn’t pursue the field. I’ve spent time in the “oil patch” working on service rigs. I then got on as jail guard at Bowden Institute, juvenile section (one of my best jobs ever). From there, due to some life circumstances and an opportunity that arose, I began working in the mine at Pine Point, N.W.T. It was here that my love for “big” mining trucks, loaders, cats, etc. took hold. After a couple of years, I moved down to Smithers, B.C. where I got a job with the B.C. Forest Service, Engineering and Maintenance, as a janitor/laborer. That transitioned into equipment operator and then to Jr. Road Foreman. At this time, the Forestry phased out Engineering and Maintenance and starting contracting out the work. At that time, I moved over to the town of Smithers as an equipment operator. This, however, didn't last too long as ambition got in the way. I had gotten married to Mary Schenk and started a small family ... shortly after, we moved to Telkwa, B.C. I bought a logging truck and hauled logs for the West Fraser Mill in Smithers. After a few years, I sold the truck and our home in Telkwa, B.C. From here we moved to Grand Forks, B.C. I got on with the Highways Department driving snowplows/sanding truck for the winter. Then in the spring of 1980, a business opportunity came along and we ended up in the pub business at a little place called Wasa, B.C. We had some tough times for a bit, but got through them. But unfortunately, a family split forced the sale of the pub in late 1983. It was one of the best, most fun, hardest working jobs I had, but I loved it. From there I odd-jobbed it, driving gravel truck, etc. for a couple years. I then got on with the Department of Highways in Cranbrook, as plow/sander truck driver, etc. This lasted to early 1989, when I got a chance to go back to mining at Tumbler Ridge, B.C. I worked there until 1992, when I was laid off and returned to Rimbey, AB. Here I began working for two different contractors in the oilfield business, operating dozers and hoes till January, 1995. Then I was called back to Tumbler Ridge and worked till the shutdown until early '98. From there I moved down to Winfield, AB and bought a home. In 1999, I went to work for a private contractor in Fort McMurray, AB driving haul trucks and dozers at Syncrude. I then got the chance to get on at Suncor as an equipment operator. I worked here until late 2003 when torn shoulder ligaments and muscles forced me onto long-term disability. I wasn’t able to return to work and I retired officially in 2007. I spent my time at home in Winfield. My original home was lost in a devastating fire in 2001, while I was away in Fort McMurray. We bounced back with a new 16 x 76 manufactured home, and this I shared with my special gal-pal, Maudie for many years. Around this time, I was fortunate to connect with my son, Mark, thanks to my daughter’s assistance. Due to my increasing health challenges (I beat lung cancer x2), Maudie had to relocate to Lacombe and I had to sell my Winfield home. I bought a motorhome and spent the winter of 2013-14 touring Vancouver Island, a lifelong dream on my bucket list. I never got to the East Coast or Alaska as I wished I could have, as continued failing health forced me into this old folks home here in Rimbey. My love of music was ignited when my mother gave me an old “Stella” guitar when I was about 14. I learned a few chords and played along with my sister, Gail on her accordion. I had always loved music, all kinds, but leaned to old time/country and western, old time rock and roll. I had played with several different groups/people, etc. since I was a teenager, and ended up forming an old time dance band (The Midnight Ramblers) while in Smithers. We all became great friends and shared many good times. We became quite popular and played a pile of wedding dances, service clubs, rodeos, hotels, fall fairs, etc. We played together for about 6-7 years. Unfortunately, the band broke up when I left the Bulkley Valley. While in Wasa, I continued pursuing my love of music and set up P/A's, amps, keyboards, etc. at our pub and played there myself, and often invited fellow musicians to drop in and play along. It was a great time! I also used to play solo at times in some of the other pubs and hotels in the area. I took a break from playing after selling the pub. I did start playing again a bit after I had moved to Winfield. I played once a month with some locals at the local Legion Branch. All through the years I had been writing songs and poems, and had been writing a lot more from the 80s on up. A chance and offer came up to record some of my songs onto CD. I recorded two CD’s, all my own songs. Some people liked it. This was another bucket list item that I was proud to accomplish. I still have enough new and old songs to fill a couple of more CD's. I don't know if I'll ever get them down on tape, because my hands are so numb I have a hard time playing my guitar. I have a song, special for my daughter, Stacy that I sure want to get recorded. Anyway, it's nap time.” Gary leaves behind his loving family: one daughter, Stacy Soderberg (Guy Maloney) of Calgary; one son, Mark Stade of Edmonton; and a very special friend and partner, Madeline ‘Maudie’ Hoy of Lacombe. He is also survived by his sister, Gail Nesimiuk of Surrey, B.C.; two nieces and several cousins; as well as many friends, old and new. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Hazel Soderberg (Aldrich); and his nephew, Bryan Mitchell. With respect for Gary’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Gary’s Memory may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5 (www.cancer.ca). Carole Ann Cech of Bluffton, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Carole Ann Sutherland was born on May 23, 1942 in New Westminster, B.C. to Dave and Ella Sutherland. She was their first born. The young family did not stay long in B.C., moving into a small general store near Unity, Saskatchewan when Carole was very young. Her parents, along with Carole and her four siblings, ran the general store for many years. When she was about ten years old, the family packed up again, this time relocating to Alberta. They bought a farm and became new farmers in Bluffton, where Carole attended school alongside her siblings. After they were married, Carole and Frank moved into a home on the Cech family farm, only three miles away from her parent’s home. Together they worked on the mixed farm and raised two children, Jerry and Marie, who also pitched in to help. Between farming and raising a family, Carole found time for a few part-time jobs … some of them a bit unusual! She was known as the ‘Bluffton egg lady’, often calling herself the ‘crazy egg lady’! She sold fresh farm eggs and pickled eggs by the dozens! She was also the ‘auction truck lady’ for Allen Olson auctions, and she enjoyed meeting many people and sharing farming stories. In her spare time, Carole was a large part of the Bluffton Hall for many years, working in the kitchen with the ladies club, as well as serving as a hall board member. Carole and Frank were big supporters of the Bluffton Hall, helping to organize fall suppers and monthly cabarets! She was also a terrific cook and was renowned for her many home-cooked dishes; and she was a fantastic hostess - a role she absolutely loved! Carole was thrilled whenever she had a house full of family and friends to share food, drink, and music. Many nights after cooking all day, she would join in with her accordion and would play music into the wee hours. Carole worked hard and played hard her whole life. She was not one to say ‘no’ to helping out her neighbours - whether it was helping with farm work, or building the first straw house! She will be dearly missed at home, and in the community. Carole will be forever remembered by her loving family: her son, Jerry (Sheila) Cech of Bluffton and their two children: Kara (Justin Van Heuvel), and Cory; and her daughter, Marie Cech of Bluffton and her two children: Tia, and Trent. She will also be lovingly remembered by her siblings: three brothers, Allen (Cheryl) Sutherland also of Bluffton; Jim (MaryAnn) Sutherland of Calgary; and Don (Marie) Sutherland of Princeton, B.C.; as well as one sister, Kathleen (Rick) Smith of Port Alberni, B.C.; in addition to many nieces, nephews, other family members, and several close friends. Carole was predeceased by her parents, Dave and Ella; and her beloved husband, Frank in 2015. A Public Graveside Service in Celebration of Carole’s Life was held at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Terry Oke presiding. A time of fellowship and refreshments followed at the Royal Canadian Legion, Rimbey. - FROM
Inez From (nee Sherwood) of Bentley, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the age of 95 years. Inez Agnes Sherwood was born in Lacombe, Alberta in 1924, the first child of Kathleen Parry and Ivan Sherwood. The family eventually expanded to include four more sisters and two brothers. Inez attended the Galbraith School in Lethbridge until the family moved to the Winfield area, where they found themselves a busy life of farming and tending to a number of pigs, cows, chickens, and a team of horses. All the children had to do daily chores, and as the oldest, Inez was in charge of cooking. This was the beginning of becoming an exceptional cook. In the winter, she also had to melt snow for water to wash clothes. Soon the children would attend Norbuck School, which was one-room for Grades 1 to 9. There were many stories of walking 2 ½ miles (one way), cutting through fields in all types of weather, carrying Roger’s Golden Syrup pails which would contain their lunch of a Roger’s syrup sandwich … and maybe an apple for dessert! Luckily, in the winter months these frozen sandwiches would thaw out by lunch time from the warmth of the barrel fire used to heat the classroom. Inez attended the Winfield School before returning to Lethbridge Collegiate. It was there she realized a future career in education, and travelled to Victoria, B.C. to attend Normal School where she received her teaching certificate. Her first teaching position was at Kraus Creek School in Westbridge, B.C., yet another one-room school house for Grades 1 - 8. Inez was an excellent teacher, and proceeded to encourage her kid sister to pass Grade 8. In 1947 a young man, Oliver From, cut and supplied the school with firewood. After a few square dances and do-si-dos together, they were united in marriage in 1949 and moved to a small farm and began raising purebred registered Hereford cattle. In 1960, Oliver and Inez relocated to Calgary to continue ranching before moving north and settling in Bentley in 1963. It was here that Inez created a full life as a farm wife for the next 50 years. She continued with her outstanding cooking skills; providing the hired hands working in the fields with delicious fresh-baked cinnamon buns, and awesome ginger snap cookies. Her bachelor brother was always given an ice cream bucket of cookies to take home with him whenever he stopped by for a visit. A summer tradition was making Christmas cakes, where everyone had to have a stir and make a wish! Birthday cakes were also a joy for Inez to bake! She also had a beautiful garden with lots of veggies and, of course, those favourite ‘to-die-for’ raspberries! Fruit and venison were canned to last over the long, cold winters. Raising chickens provided fresh eggs, while milking cows provided fresh cream and butter. Every day began with the morning ritual of turning on the radio to listen to the weather forecast … a must-know for all involved in the farming industry. Following that, one must not forget to feed the hungry mouths of the cats and dogs waiting at the back door for their breakfast. Then, of course, the wonderful and colorful display of hollyhock plants had to also get their morning drink as well. They provided much pleasure and brightened Inez’s day! Calving time was especially busy. Inez would be decked out in her rubber boots, hat, scarf, gloves, and at least four layers of ‘clothing’ to venture out to the barn at all times of the day and night to help bring a newborn calf into the world. Later, many hours would be spent bottle-feeding those precious little ones. When not tending to the outside world, Inez would be found inside sewing on her treadle Singer sewing machine, crocheting, or reading numerous letters received from her brother who was working in the oilfields in the Middle East. She also had a love of classical music, and at the age of 60 years, she studied and received her piano certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Inez enjoyed life to the fullest and worked very hard at any task set before her. She spent her last years at the Eckville Manor, and will be fondly remembered as kind, warm-hearted, gracious, and friendly. Inez will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her siblings: her brother, Don Parry of Cardston, Alberta; and her two sisters, Illaena Rudy of Ladysmith, B.C.; and Irene Shelfontiuk of Castlegar, B.C.; in addition to her nieces and nephews: Suzanne, Shirlene, Michelle, Illa, Sean, and Rick; as well as many other relatives, and several dear friends. Inez was predeceased by her parents, Kathleen and Ivan Sherwood; her husband, Oliver in 2016; one brother, Menz Sherwood; and two sisters, Peggy Sewell, and Betty Sherwood. A Public Graveside Service in Celebration of Inez’s Life was held at the Bentley Cemetery, Bentley on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Mrs. Sonja McAlpin presiding. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Inez’s Memory may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #202, 5913 - 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4C4 (www.heartandstroke.ca). Condolence messages may be forwarded to the family by visiting: www.ofc-ltd.ca Just as Inez always extended to everyone her friendly wave and a ‘best wishes’ salutation … we wave back for the very last time. Best wishes, Inez … you will be missed by many. Burial Arrangements for the Late Inez From (nee Sherwood) entrusted to the care of

Annie ‘Ann’ Krossa of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, with her loving daughter, Bev by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Area Two on Friday, August 23, 2019 at the age of 90 years. Ann was born at home near Mendham, Saskatchewan. In April, 1943 she moved with her family to a farm east of Rimbey, and in May she turned 14 years old. Ann, along with many of her siblings, were hired out to neighbours doing any job they could get. The days were long and the work was hard. Ann met Henry ‘Hank’ Krossa at the age of 17, and two years later, on October 9, 1948, they were united in marriage. Ann and Hank worked construction and painted houses. They started in Ponoka, and then worked at the barracks at CFB Griesbach in Edmonton, and the homes at CFB Penhold. In 1954 they purchased the Ray Stoner farm on Westlake Road by Gull Lake, and in 1965 they purchased the Ed Ellsworth farm as well, also on Westlake Road. They raised two children, farmed, and kept painting - this time locally. In her lifetime, Ann worked hard in the fields with her father, and then for many years alongside her husband. She also waitressed, cleaned rooms, painted, and had a huge market garden. Ann sold homemade baking, milk, cream, veggies, and eggs to bring in extra income. She also baked and made many meals for family and guests, and was well-known for her exceptional kuchen and delicious donuts! She was also known for her beautifully kept home and yard. Ann loved dancing, a good game of cards, and ice fishing. After her husband passed away, Ann became Don McFadyen’s dance partner, and for five years they entertained in several long-term care facilities. In July of 2012, Ann broke her hip. Her struggles continued between 2012 and 2018, as during this time she broke both of her hips, her leg, and her back. In September, 2018, with the onset of dementia, Ann moved into Rimbey Long Term Care. Throughout her life, Ann always had a strong work ethic. She believed that if you were going to do something - do it to the best of your ability. She was kind, helpful, always welcoming, and possessed a wonderfully wicked sense of humour. She loved her family unconditionally, and they, in turn, loved her. She will be missed and forever remembered. Ann will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughter, Beverly Dorey; her daughter-in-law, Brenda Krossa; and her two precious grandchildren: Jason, and Michelle (Kyle Fodor).
