WOLLENBERG

Günter Wollenberg of the Yeoford District, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, November 6, 2020.

Günter was born in Germany in June, 1932. At the age of 21 years, together with his friend, Ernie, they decided to immigrate to Canada. Their idea was to only stay a short while, with adventures in New Zealand and Australia being the next part of their plan, but Canada didn’t let them go anywhere! They loved it and stayed! Günter worked for many years in Saskatchewan. He first worked in Fisk, and then later worked with the Goldsmith family in Hoosier. It was at a house party in Kindersley, where Günter met the love of his life, Ilse, and in November, 1963 they were united in marriage. In 1967, Günter and Ilse relocated to Alberta and worked for Keith and Lois Rosenberger, and later for Dale and Beth Massie. Over the years, Günter remained friends with all those he worked for. Günter and Ilse started their family with the birth of their first daughter, Victoria, and Tracy followed a short 14 months later. Having two daughters was his biggest joy! They were very active in the Balzac United Church, and the deep friendships they formed in the Balzac community lasted the rest of their lives. They became truly Canadian! Their dream of owning their own piece of land came true when Günter and his twin sister, Christel inherited some money after the death of their parents. A piece of land in Yeoford became a reality in 1981, and Günter and Ilse moved there permanently in 1991 – with 20+ pregnant cattle in tow! Many happy years were spent building strong friendships in Yeoford and area. In 2018, as Günter’s health deteriorated with a mild stroke and dementia, he stopped farming and rented out the pasture to trusted neighbours. Ilse looked after him full-time until July, 2020 when Günter moved into Rimbey Long Term Care. Despite the excellent care he received, he passed away at 88 years young. Günter and Ilse would have celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Günter will be forever remembered and greatly missed by his loving family: his beloved wife, Ilse; and his two daughters, Victoria (Kevin) Walkes of Calgary; and Tracy (Todd) Robertson also of Calgary; as well as four cherished grandchildren: Kurt, Evangeline, Hannah, and Zoe; in addition to several other relatives and many close friends. Günter was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Hedwig; and his twin sister, Christel in 2020.

A Gathering of Family and Friends to Celebrate Günter’s Life will be held in the Summer of 2021. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Günter’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Health Services Donations Program, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhealthdonations.com).
