FINNEN
On Friday, July 28, 2023, Aubrey John Finnen of Rimbey, Alberta passed away, surrounded by his loved ones, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 77 years.
Aubrey was born in Crystal City, Manitoba on April 29, 1946, the first of four children of Wilfred and Rose Finnen. The family moved many times between Manitoba, Ontario, and B.C. Aubrey attended thirteen schools in twelve years! The family finally settled in Calgary, residing right next door to a pretty girl, Mary, and her family. Aubrey and Mary’s first date in August, 1967 blossomed, and they were married on August 24, 1968. They remained in Calgary where their son Matthew was born in 1975, followed by their daughter Laura in 1977. They then made the decision to buy a farm west of Rimbey in 1981, in hopes of providing a better life for their family.
Besides running a small cattle operation, Aubrey worked as a carpenter and handyman. He took great pride in his work, and there was little he couldn’t build or fix. Aubrey was a principled man who didn’t shy away from sharing his opinion in hopes of creating change. His letter writing was legendary. He also held a great sense of humour, often having those around him laughing – sometimes in wonderment at how he came up with things! He will be greatly missed.
Aubrey will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Mary; his children Matthew (Lesley-Ann) of Edmonton; and Laura (Derek) Middleton of Blackfalds; as well as his cherished grandchildren Caitlin, Marley, and Clara. He will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings, several nieces and nephews, other extended family, and many friends. Aubrey was predeceased by his parents, Wilf and Rose.
With respect for Aubrey’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A Family Gathering will take place at a later date. Aubrey will be laid to rest at a later time in the Columbarium at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to Family and Community Support Services, Box 404, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyfcss.com); to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com); or to the charity of one’s choice.
