PAYNE
With broken hearts we announce that Wilma Elizabeth Payne of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Acute Care. This beautiful, proud, witty, hard-working, humble, thoughtful, and strong lady went to join the love of her life, Roy, on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at the age of 91 years.
Wilma, affectionately known as “Billie” by her family, was born a coal miner’s daughter in Drumheller, Alberta. Her charming accounts of her youth, and the long, full life she lead, were absolutely captivating! Wilma held a deep love for her husband Roy and her family, and was always supportive and encouraging. She continuously kept herself busy doing something, and never asked for anything. Wilma was fond of occasionally dabbling in a little gambling, and was a mega-huge sports fan! She absolutely loved hockey – especially Sidney Crosby – in addition to curling, baseball, and horse racing. She did not like to miss any game or race! In the summer, Wilma took great pleasure in either venturing to the local racetrack to watch her son Derrick burn down the drag strip, or spending a day at Century Mile watching the horse races – always placing bets on the horses her son Jodey trained. Anyone who had the pleasure to get to know and love her, soon discovered that she was a woman of integrity. Wilma will be deeply missed by her loving family and treasured friends, old and new.
She made everyone’s lives so much better and brighter. We love you, Mom.
Wilma will be forever remembered by her three sons Derrick (Rhonda) of Rimbey; Jodey (Sheri) of Millet; and Bradley (Deanna) of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; and her two daughters Wendy (Cliff) Reiling of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta; and Roxanne (Glenn) Waddell of Stony Plain; as well as sixteen cherished grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She will also be forever remembered by her sister Jean Warkentin of Drumheller; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Wilma was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2014; two sons Rory and Kevin; her brother Stewart; and three sisters Cathy, Essie, and Lolo.
With respect for Wilma’s wishes, no formal funeral service was held. In her memory, indulge yourself this summer in a “small” butterscotch sundae – a treat Wilma savoured! If desired, memorial donations in her memory may be made directly to Kids in Sports, Box 1684, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to any other organization in your area that supports kids playing sports. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
