Brian passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the age of 82 years. Born on April 24, 1943, in Calgary, Alberta, Brian was a devoted family man and an educated gentleman who possessed a multitude of passions, interests, and talents in his lifetime. He was an all-round farmer and a true cowboy who held a special love for the land and for animals of all kinds. - TRUMBLEY
Archie Trumbley of Rimbey , Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the age of 84 years. Archie was a twin, born on May 3, 1941, on the family farm northwest of Demaine, Saskatchewan to Martha and Robert “Bob” Trumbley. He was small, but feisty, weighing under 3 lbs at birth. His twin brother, unfortunately, did not survive. Despite not having the benefit of an incubator, his mother wrapped him in layers of cheesecloth and cotton batting to keep him warm. Archie was unable to involve himself in sports, as at the age of 12 years he had a serious bout of rheumatic fever. He channeled his energy into other activities that included cars. The most memorable would be his first car, a 1937 Chev that had previously been owned by his brother Marvin. Archie and friends customized the old Chevy by cutting the top off and turning it into a convertible. The idea was fun… until it rained! At a young age, Archie left home and found employment at a couple of ranching companies. Later, he moved to Saskatoon and worked for Ram’s Construction and then moved to Calgary where he was again employed in the construction industry. Within a few years, Archie became one of three partners in Target Tunneling. Not long after he was the sole owner of Calgary Tunneling and Horizontal Drilling. Through his work, Archie had the opportunity to travel from coast to coast. Archie spent much of his life living in, or near, Calgary; most recently moving to Rimbey about nine years ago. He loved to travel, spending many winter vacations in warmer climates, later enjoying his condo in Costa Rica until his health started to fail. During the seasons he spent in Canada, you could find Archie at his local Legion where he was a strong, supportive member, always trying to win another “meat draw”. Archie is survived by his partner Elizabeth Bakx; his son Roger St. Denis; and his granddaughter Cassandra Annable. He is also survived by his brother Marvin; his brother Ken (Barb); his sister Darlene Murdoch; as well as his nieces Debbie (Doug), Rauncie, LeAnn (Curtis), Jennifer (Steven), and Jolene (Colin); and his nephews Blaine (Betty Ann), Allan (Annette), Laurie (Shirley), Blaine (Marie), and Blair (Jonna), and their families. Archie was predeceased by his parents Martha and Bob Trumbley; his wife Elaine; daughters Yvette, Yvonne, and Yolanda; twin brother John; brother Leroy; brother-in-law Mervin Murdoch; and his sister-in-law Norma Trumbley. A family Graveside Service in Celebration of Archie’s Life will be held at the Waterside Cemetery, near Demaine, Saskatchewan on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. - JOHNSON
We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Leslie “Les” Barry Johnson of Rimbey, Alberta on Thursday, September 18, 2025, while on holidays in Barcelona, Spain, at the age of 73 years. Les grew up on the family farm in the Rimbey area, where he learned the values of hard work, honesty, and integrity; qualities that shaped the person he became. Les left the family farm once he graduated from Gas Technology at NAIT in 1974. Upon completion of his schooling at NAIT, Les’s career in the oilpatch advanced rapidly in the international oil and gas industry. In 1973 the OPEC crisis occurred, which required non-OPEC sources of crude and specialized workers to be in high demand. This afforded Les the opportunity to start an adventurous career lasting 40 years. Les and a couple of friends spent four months in France training to become Flopetrol engineers. They went on assignment in several countries; such as Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Libya. In 1982 Les left the Schlumberger family and moved to Slant Drilling Systems as a technical advisor. He worked as part of the development team; technology that is still utilized around the world today. Les moved on to a stint with Computalog Ltd.’s coil tubing services, where he helped them develop an export market for their coiled tubing units. Les then went back into the oilfield consulting business with Shell in Nigeria, Tesco Corporation in Algeria, Precision Drilling Services in Algeria, and Verenex Energy in Libya, ending his oilfield career with Total E&P in Nigeria. He retired in 2014 from his overseas career. Les always had a vision and a desire to do projects in a safer and more “worker-friendly” manner. Thus, he founded On-site Facilities and Recycling Services out of Rimbey, specializing in stadium light towers and portable washroom facilities equipped with light towers. Les’s ventures overseas provided him the opportunity to develop many long-term friends. It was not uncommon for Les to invite many of these friends to come visit him on the family farm in Rimbey, where Les was only too eager to show them around, followed by a tour of the Rimbey area. Les was proud of his roots and took a keen interest in knowing and researching the history of numerous buildings, businesses, and homes in the area. There were very few buildings or businesses in Rimbey that Les didn’t know the history of, and if he didn’t know, he made it a mission to find out. Les also had a keen interest in preserving history. All one had to do was visit Les’s farm to see how he took pride in bringing old, interesting items back to life, such as his collection of tractors and vehicles. Les also enjoyed the modern era, as evident by his bright yellow Camaro with a whopping 560 horsepower. He matched his car with his iconic yellow vest and hat. Les was committed to preserving the family farm. He set out to restore many of the outbuildings and took special pride in rebuilding the old barn. If you knew Les, you knew that he was meticulous about tools and things having a specific place. No job was done until the tools were back in their spot. Les had pride in ownership, and it showed; whether it was a new fence being built or the lawn being cut, he wanted it done right. All one had to do was take a walk around the farm to see the pride he took in maintaining it. He was so proud to share this special place with many community members, such as the Rimbey Lions Club and the Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol. He gladly shared the yard and barn for weddings, school reunions, and family get-togethers. The farm was a place where everyone looked forward to their gatherings. Les was especially eager to share an iconic hayride with family, followed by a wiener roast. The family farm was always that “feel good” meeting place filled with much fun and laughter. His nieces and nephews truly meant the world to him, and he always took the time to phone or send a birthday greeting whenever a special occasion came around. He would brag about their accomplishments to anyone who would listen. They cherished the farm and loved their Uncle Les. He would tell many interesting stories about his overseas adventures; it was always a treat to hear him speak. Les made friends quickly with little effort wherever he was in the world. He had a special gift of being able to talk with just about anyone. It didn’t matter if you were the CFO of a company or the bag boy at the local grocery store, he felt everyone had something to contribute. Les really loved the strong sense of community around Rimbey and frequently donated to several causes, often anonymously. Les also became an active member of the Rimbey Royal Canadian Legion and supported many projects with his partner Christine. Most notably, they worked on the Veterans Banners Project. These flags will be displayed around the town of Rimbey to honour past veterans. Les’s partner, Christine, came into his life about three years ago. She brought that sparkle back into Les’s eyes and made him young again. We are so happy they found each other, even for a short while. Les and Christine had a wonderful trip planned on a Princess Cruise ship in the Mediterranean, tours through Italy and France, followed by a visit to the Maritimes. Unfortunately, this trip was cut short with his unexpected passing. Les will be remembered for his kind soul, and being that special person you could always count on for a thoughtful conversation. Throughout his life he touched many hearts with his special phone calls, informative emails, and personalized cards. Les’s presence, family values, and steadfast approach to life will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Les will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and his partner Christine Fernie. He is survived by his daughter Kayla; his mother, Gladys Johnson, who Les deeply treasured; two sisters Bev (Darrel) Bohlender and Val (Phil) Dolan; as well as his nieces and nephews Allison (Dave) Coleman, Chelsea Dolan (Matt Chomistek), Sarah Dolan (Joel Varjassy), Becky (Blake) Van Hecke, and Kyle (Ashley) Bohlender. Les will also be deeply missed by his great-nieces and great-nephews Jett, Raye, and Kaden Coleman; Dolan and Cormac Chomistek; Vaya Varjassy; and Wren Van Hecke; in addition to many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Les was predeceased by his father, Herb Johnson, 32 years ago. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Les’s Life will be held at the Keyera Place Community Centre (formerly the Peter Lougheed Community Centre), 5109-54 Street, Rimbey on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend Ray Goodship officiating. A Private Family Interment Service will take place at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. - PAKISH
Eugene Henry Pakish , affectionately known as Hank, was born on February 19, 1951, and passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2025, at the age of 74 years. Although it was very sudden and came as a surprise to his family, it was not totally unexpected as his health had been declining for the last few years. The family takes comfort knowing Hank did not suffer and that he passed away as he would have wanted – in his home – “The Lake” was his favourite place to be. Hank was born in Lestock, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm in the Bankend/West Bend area, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and resilience; qualities that shaped the man he became. Hank left the family farm to start his career at Western Rock Bit in Calgary. While in Calgary he met Pamela “Pam” Clemence. In December 1973, they married, beginning a devoted partnership that lasted over 51 years. In 1975, Hank and Pam moved to Kindersley, Saskatchewan. After the birth of their daughter, Benita, the family relocated to Coleville, Saskatchewan where they purchased their first house and made it a home to raise their daughter and two sons, Jeff and Brendan. The Pakish family established deep roots in Coleville, creating lifelong friendships and cherished memories while raising their young children. While living in Coleville, Hank worked in the oil and gas industry at Golden Eagle, then moved to United Canso where he met his mentor and good friend Glenn. In addition to his work commitments, Hank enjoyed working on the Clemence family farm just south of Coleville, always looking forward to spring seeding season and fall harvest. In 1989, Hank continued his oil and gas career by accepting a foreman position with Deminex in their Alliance field office, prompting the family’s move to Forestburg, Alberta. There, he instilled his strong work ethic and dedication to his career in his children as they grew into young adults. While embracing life in Central Alberta, the family continued to build lasting relationships and grow even closer together. Hank’s career continued to excel. Pam, Hank, and the boys relocated to Calgary in 1996, where he joined NCE Petrofund as a production superintendent. The family adapted to city life and enjoyed all the amenities (and buffets!!) it had to offer. Although Hank lived in the city, he and his brother Peter remained dedicated to their shared passion for the outdoors. They made sure to carve out time for fall hunting trips and ice fishing at local lakes, keeping their traditions alive no matter where life took them. Hank’s years of hard work were rewarded in 2006 when he and Pam were able to retire. Committed to preserving their family values and togetherness, they made the meaningful decision to settle permanently at their family cabin in Poulsen’s Pasture on Gull Lake, Alberta. “The Lake” property became a cherished gathering place for their children and grandchildren; a central hub filled with joy, laughter, and the outdoor activities Hank loved most – all in the peaceful rural setting he adored. There, he and Pam enjoyed well-earned years of rest, devoting their time and attention to their growing family. His grandchildren truly became the highlight of his years and his biggest joy. Hank attended many hockey games, dance recitals, recent graduations, and every other milestone they achieved. He would brag about their accomplishments to anyone who would listen. Hank lit up when they were mentioned, let alone when he saw them. The grandchildren had a way of bringing back his energetic, youthful soul. He would spend hours playing backyard games of kick the can, ladder golf, hide and seek, and croquet which always ended with a campfire, bush pies, and s’mores. Hank was passionate about fishing, hunting, and he loved hockey, golf, football, curling, and watching sports with family and friends. His competitive nature always added a bit of spice to any recreational activity; whether it be bean bags, his golf score, or who caught the biggest fish – Hank always had his pride on the line. A skilled handyman, Hank had every tool imaginable and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. Known for his determination and perseverance, there was nothing he couldn’t build, fix, or accomplish once he set his mind to it. Over the years there wasn’t a car that drove by without noticing Hank’s immaculate lawns and pristine yard; something he took great pride in. His attention to detail and love for maintaining a beautiful home reflected his character: quiet, steady, and full of pride in the life he built. Hank will be remembered for his wisdom, strength, and the deep love he held for his family and friends. Throughout his life, he touched many hearts with his steady presence, sharp wit, infectious smile, and hearty laugh. Hank’s presence, traditional values, and steadfast approach to life will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family is grateful for the life he dedicated to providing for them. Hank will be deeply missed by many; most importantly, his five grandchildren who will carry on his legacy of hard work, determination, dedication, and commitment. Hank is survived by his wife Pamela; and their children Benita (Matt), Jeff (Leslie), and Brendan (Brian). He was the proud and loving grandfather to Jenna, Kate, Carter, Pacey, and Peyton. He is also survived by his brothers Pete and Gerald; his sisters Mary, Phyllis, Sonia, Susan, Pat, Marg, Terry, Donna, Karla, and Joy; as well as many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Hank was predeceased by his parents Nick and Helen; his in-laws Ray and Marg Clemence; his brother Dennis; his sister Emily; sister-in-law Brenda; brothers-in-law Warren, Ray, Ron, Al, Sid, and Dudley; and a nephew Todd. With respect for Hank’s wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. If desired, the family kindly requests that memorial donations in Hank’s memory be made directly to the University of Calgary, Calgary COPD and Asthma Program, Health Research Innovation Centre, 4C60, 3280 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 4Z6 ( www.ccapalberta.ca ); or to the Alberta Conservation Association, 101 – 9 Chippewa Road. - STRELLAEFF
With heavy hearts and fond memories, we announce the passing of Jerry William Strellaeff , a beloved soul who left this world a little brighter – certainly a lot louder – than he found it. Known by all as a true joker, Jerry had a knack for turning even the most ordinary moments into unforgettable stories. His laughter was infectious, his tales always a bit taller each time they were told, and his joy for life absolutely unmatched. Whether it was a perfectly timed punchline or a dramatic retelling of an everyday trip to the store, Jerry could keep a room in stitches. Jerry loved food almost as much as he loved people – though not enough to pay full price for it. A master of finding the best deals and a champion of the “buy one, get one” lifestyle, he made thriftiness an art form and always had a coupon at the ready. Still, he would give you the last bite of his favourite meal without hesitation. A gifted musician, Jerry found joy and peace behind his steel guitar. He loved nothing more than playing in the band, losing himself in the music, and sharing that joy with anyone lucky enough to listen. Whether on stage or just jamming with friends, his music spoke volumes about the heart and soul behind the man. Above all else, Jerry loved his family. He especially adored his grandchildren, Skylar, Bret, Kierra, Caidynce, and Taegan. Time spent with them was his greatest joy, whether he was teasing them with jokes, cheering them on, or simply sitting with them – his love was constant and unconditional. They were his pride and joy, and Jerry never missed a chance to remind them of it. Though we are heartbroken, we find comfort in the countless memories of laughter, love, and shared meals. Jerry may be gone, but the shenanigans – and the joy brought to our lives – will live on. Rest easy, Jerry. Thank you for the laughs, stories, and all the many fond memories. With respect for Jerry’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. - WASELENKO
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Donald “Don” Waselenko of Rimbey, Alberta on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the age of 76 years. Born in 1949 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Don was raised under the prairie sunshine on the family farm near Scout Lake. In Winnipeg, he met the love of his life, Isabell Koch, and the two were married in July, 1974; a loving partnership of 51 years together. Don’s career began with Zellers, where he rose through the ranks to become a general manager, leading stores in Calgary, Grande Prairie, and Sherwood Park. Later, he served as a district manager for Stedmans, travelling widely throughout British Columbia and the prairie provinces. In 1987, Don embraced a new opportunity; managing, and eventually owning, the Stedmans store in Rimbey. It was here he truly put down roots, falling in love with the rolling hills and the mixed farming community. Over the years, he also lent his talents to Co-op Lumber, Macleods, Rimbey Western Wear, Fields, and the Red Apple. Everywhere he worked, Don was known for his ready smile, hearty handshake, and a quick-witted sense of humour. A committed community builder, Don gave generously of his time and skills to the Rimbey Historical Society and the Rimbey Chamber of Commerce. He was particularly involved in the PasKaPoo Park pavilion project and contributing to the Rimbey International Truck Museum. Don’s love of the outdoors was boundless. Whether whisking his family and friends away for spontaneous mountain trips, cooking hearty meals as the “camp cook” on trail rides, or tending to his vegetable garden, he humbly embraced life with energy, gratitude, and joy. Above all, Don’s faith in Jesus Christ was his foundation, and he placed his trust in what is eternal. Don will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Isabell; his children Jason (Lynnea) Waselenko and Nathan (Kali) Waselenko; as well as his cherished grandchildren Lysia, Breeya, Casen, and Colter. He is also survived by his twin sister Bonnie (Marvin) Broughton; sister Barbie (Ian) Clark; and brother Tim (Julie) Waselenko; along with many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched. - BUCKLER
With broken hearts we announce the passing of David “Dave” Lloyd Buckler of Alder Flats, Alberta. Dave passed away at home on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the age of 83 years. A full circle of life. Dave was born in a cabin at Pendryl, Alberta; the third son in a family of four children born to Albion and Hazel Buckler. The family moved and resided for a short time in the Rimbey/Lacombe area before making their way to Bowden, Alberta, where Dave grew up. He attended SAIT in Calgary to complete his automotive mechanics certification, obtaining a job in Innisfail where he met his wife and where they settled to start their family. They raised two children, David Jr. and Brenda. Dave moved his family from Innisfail to Drayton Valley, where he purchased a gas station with a partner, and where he worked for many years. He later considered a shift in his career and decided to work in the oil and gas industry, which took him and his family to Lloydminster, Alberta, and eventually to Lac La Biche, Alberta. Dave also loved to farm. While in Lac La Biche, the family ventured onto their first farm, where they broke ground together and manually picked rocks and roots. Thank goodness there were four of them! The family then made the decision to relocate south to the Rimbey area, where Dave bought a farm at Hoadley and worked at the county school bus shop. He met many great friends while he worked there. Years later, Dave sold the farm at Hoadley and purchased a quarter of land in the Buck Lake/Alder Flats area – making it back home, full circle, close to where he was born. He was blessed to have his granddaughter and great-granddaughters grow up on the farm. Dave continued his love for farming until his passing. Dave loved the outdoors, the beauty of nature, and took great pleasure in exploring the wilderness. He enjoyed the company of many friends and family who will remember spending quality time with him while they embarked on many adventures together. Dave opened his home to everyone who ventured his way – always believing that his home was their home. He was a social butterfly who loved to play his guitar and visit with friends. Dave was known for enjoying a glass of wine on a Friday night, surrounded by his friends and family as everyone gathered around a cozy fire while Dave happily strummed on his guitar. He will be greatly missed. Dave will be lovingly remembered by his son David Jr. (Jaci) Buckler of Hardisty; his daughter Brenda Buckler of Winfield; and his stepdaughter Rachel Ellery of Edmonton. He will be greatly missed by his granddaughter Alanna (Kevin) Naumann of Alder Flats; his step grandchildren Jared Ruston of Blackfalds, Jordan Ruston of Sylvan Lake, as well as Jackson and Spencer Ellery, both of Edmonton; in addition to three precious great-granddaughters Natalie, Josie, and Brittany Naumann. - LEWIS
Lori Annette Lewis (née Bernhardt) of Rimbey, Alberta, the chosen daughter of Hermann and Sharon Bernhardt, was born on February 25, 1971, in Red Deer, Alberta. She was called by God and brought into His family through Holy Baptism on April 18, 1971. Lori publicly announced the faith into which she was baptized as her own in the Rite of Confirmation on May 26, 1985. At the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 5, 2025, God called her into her eternal home following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 54 years. Lori obtained all her schooling in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Following her high school graduation, she attended Concordia College in Edmonton for a short time. Lori found her life’s vocation when she entered the Alberta College of Paramedics training program, becoming an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Not content with this level, Lori successfully completed training as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). She worked as an EMT for Guardian Ambulance in Ponoka and Rimbey Emergency Services in Rimbey. While there were tough days and heartbreaking calls, Lori truly loved working on the ambulance. She enjoyed challenging medical students to start an IV on her saying, “If you can start on me, you can start on anyone.” Lori was a notorious ‘hard start,’ as can be attested to by many lab technicians and nurses in Rimbey and Edmonton. Lori was described by some of her co-workers as being great to work with, a wonderful person, fiercely determined, and she genuinely cared for her patients. The term ‘bossy’ was even affectionately used by some! After leaving the ambulance profession, Lori worked for a short time at the front desk at the Rimbey Super 8 Hotel before starting in the Admitting Department at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, among other duties. During this time, she successfully completed the course study to be certified in Health Information Management. Her family and friends used to tease and giggle with her, as her official designation was Certified Health Information Management Professional – CHIMP! Lori and Allen “Al” were married in Rimbey on July 3, 1999. It has been said that there is a blessing for each raindrop that falls on your wedding day. If this is true, then Lori and Al were truly blessed beyond numbers… as it poured the entire day they got married! Some guests remarked that they could see the animals marching by the church, two-by-two! Their family was complete with the birth of their son Paul on October 5, 2002. Lori commented several times on the importance of the October 5th date, as it was the same date that Al was installed as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey in October of 1997. By his mid-teens, Paul had grown taller than his mom, and he took great pleasure in calling her ‘short stack’! In 2005, with the blessing of her parents, Lori connected with her birth mom Kathy Bohme (née Hall). With Kathy came a half brother Lance, a half sister Odette, and a stepfather Vern. Odette often remarked that she had always wanted a sister, and now she has one. Geographically separated, they still managed to get together a couple of times a year. They had a close and special relationship. Diagnosed with cancer, Lori underwent major surgery in October of 2024 with the removal of a tumour on her tongue, its subsequent reconstruction, and the removal of most of the lymph nodes in her neck. While getting out of bed on the day after the surgery, she suffered a stroke which affected her peripheral vision on the right side. She entered the Rimbey Hospital for the last time on May 31, 2025. One day, following an appointment with her oncologist at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Lori said that she was not angry at God over what was happening, but she did wonder, ‘why’? Why is this happening? What good is God going to bring out of this? Alluding to St. Paul writing, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 ESV) Lori was loved by many and touched the lives of all with whom she met. She will be missed. With faith in Jesus as Saviour we don’t say goodbye, Lori, rather we simply say, “See you later, as we await the great and wonderous day of the resurrection when Jesus returns in glory and triumph.” “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labours, for their deeds follow them!” (Revelation 14:13 ESV) Lori will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Al; their son Paul Lewis (Jacky Singer); her parents Hermann and Sharon Bernhardt; a brother Kevin (Alex Carreon-Perez) Bernhardt; and a sister Debbie (Matt) Stirrat; along with Al’s sister Linda Lewis. She will also be lovingly remembered by Al’s family who Lori loved as her own: two daughters Rachel Lewis (Steve Braun) and Andrea Lewis (Rob Merlino); three grandsons Joel (Sophie) Wittenberg-Cardinal, Troy Chadwick, and Nico Lewis Thibodeau; and seven granddaughters Kristen Wittenberg (Kurt Dal), Katie Wittenberg, Jillian Wittenberg (Nathan Thunder), Candace Lewis, Mikayla Lewis, Robyn Chadwick (Samuel Hughes), and Ivy Lewis Thibodeau; as well as two great-granddaughters Teena Cardinal and Athena Wittenberg-Cardinal. Lori additionally leaves behind her stepfather Vernon Bohme; a brother Lance Bohme, and his son Dylan; and a sister Odette Rosselli, and her daughter Scarlett; in addition to her aunt Elsie (Ken) Rodeman; her uncle Don Gabert; nephews Devin Stirrat, and his children Caleb and Scarlett; and Aaron Bernhardt; in addition to cousins James (Jen) Mair, Scott Mair, Andrew (Feena) Gabert, Keith (Carla) Gabert, and Barbara (Char) Tristrand. Al’s nieces and nephews will also fondly remember Lori: Dane Lewis (Erin Hermanson); Emily Lewis; Andrea Lewis, and her sons Rowan and Elwood; and Alec Hermanson. Lori was predeceased by her birth mother Kathlene Bohme; son-in-law Jordon Wittenberg; daughter-in-law Kim Wittenberg; a great-grandson Jordon Wittenberg-Cardinal; and her in-laws: father-in-law Rolland Lewis; mother-in-law Bonnie Chesher; stepmother-in-law Norah Lewis; and a nephew-in-law Samuel Lewis. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Lori’s Life will be held at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite (formerly the Zion Lutheran Church), 4521 – 54 Avenue, Rimbey on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. Interment will follow in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If desired, memorial donations may be made in Lori’s memory directly to the Cross Cancer Institute, c/o the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 710, 10123–99 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 3H1 ( www.albertacancer.ca ). - SHAW
With deep sadness and profound love, we announce the passing of Marilyn June Read Shaw – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, rancher, and the steady heart of our family. She left this world surrounded by those who loved her most, leaving behind a legacy built with strength, grace, and quiet determination. There is now a path left unridden, hoof-prints that stop too soon, a smile that lit up our days now rests in stillness. Born in Outlook, Saskatchewan on June 17, 1944, to Bessie and Frank Read, Marilyn was a small-town, prairie girl through and through. At the age of twelve years, her family made a difficult move to Alberta as her father faced the challenges of dementia, and her mother sought both work and support. Even in the face of such change and uncertainty, Marilyn’s sense of resilience and responsibility only deepened – early lessons in strength and adaptability that shaped the woman she would become. She married the love of her life, her forever partner in everything, Richard Allan Shaw. Their bond was unshakeable; a true partnership built on love, and a shared passion for the land and life they created together. For over 60 years, they did everything side-by-side. Ranching was more than a livelihood; it was their rhythm, their joy, and their shared legacy. Marilyn’s formative years of work and responsibility began at the Holy Cross Hospital as a ward aide, alongside her mother. This experience shaped her deep work ethic and sense of duty and responsibility. She later studied bookkeeping at Mount Royal University and worked for Andy’s Tire, ran the office and invoicing for Fish Creek Excavating, and eventually the Town of Okotoks. In Okotoks, Marilyn launched her business, XB-Bar Sewing, building it stitch by stitch. She repaired and crafted custom equine gear – custom horse blankets, boot bags, hat bags, and anything else a rider or horse did not know they needed until she made it. Her sewing was not just functional; it was art, done right and her way. Marilyn and Richard lived briefly in Linden, Alberta, before settling in Okotoks, where they built a life over 30 years. Their ranch was filled with horses, cattle, and any other animal one could raise – along with all the dust that comes with a well-lived life. In 2007, they moved to their retirement ranch outside Bentley, Alberta. Marilyn did not seek the spotlight, but she met life head-on – with steady hands, clear eyes, and a quiet kind of courage. Whether she was joining the chase crew for a hot air balloon launch, climbing into a saddle, or hitching a cutter for a drive, she moved through life with resolve and an open heart. She was the kind of person who would try anything at least once, sometimes twice, if it made for a good story. Her bookshelf was a mosaic of her life – loved, well-used, and reflective of her ever-curious mind. It held photography manuals beside gardening guides, western history alongside natural remedies, and composting techniques next to Canadian history books. Her passion for antique collecting meant she rarely left an auction without a treasure tucked under her arm. In later years, her collection grew to include books on investing and trading, as she taught herself to navigate the stock market in retirement. Marilyn faced life, and later, cancer, with courage, clarity, and no time for nonsense. Diagnosed in April 2025, she met her illness with the same quiet strength she brought to everything: determined and still cracking jokes, even when the coffee was not up to par. She asked for no long goodbyes. Though her hoof-prints have faded from the path, her first wish is that you keep riding forward – that joy finds you, and the sun still warms your days. We will miss her more than words can express. But we will carry her with us in every honest laugh, every well-built fence, every sunset ride, and every wild, beautiful moment that reminds us of the life she so fully, fearlessly lived. Marilyn is survived by her husband Richard Allan Shaw; her children Todd Read (Karen), Travis Read (Mandy), Roberta Lauzon (Stephane), and Zabrina Shaw (Eric); as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She now joins her parents, Bessie (1995) and Frank (1966). True to Marilyn’s nature, they wished for no long goodbyes or fuss, no funeral or memorial will be held. The family invites you to honour her memory in your own way. If desired, the family kindly requests that donations be directed to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, c/o Alberta Cancer Foundation, 710, 10123–99 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 3H1 ( www.albertacancer.ca ); or to The Lending Cupboard, #1, 7803–50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4P 1M8 ( www.lendingcupboard.ca ). It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Percy Jacob Toews of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Percy passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the age of 73 years, after a courageous battle with cancer. Percy was born in Steinbach, Manitoba on November 3, 1951, to Jacob and Katherine Toews. He married his wife Carolyn Greta Gabler on July 26, 1974. Together they raised five children, moving all across western Canada, eventually settling in Rocky Mountain House in 1988 to be close to the mountains. Over the years, Percy became very well known in the area for his artistry and craftsmanship as a tile and stone setter. Percy was an extremely creative person whose favourite past times included painting, playing various stringed instruments, and singing – either by himself or with his family. Family gatherings were always filled with music, teasing, and laughter, especially when his brothers-in-law Perry and Calvin were present. Percy’s love of muscle cars, art, and music were surpassed, however, by his love for his family. One of his favourite activities was piling all his kids into the van and heading out camping. In later years, Percy and Greta spent much of their time outdoors enjoying the west country. Percy leaves behind his wife of over 50 years, Greta; and his five children: Bonita (Randy) Catalano and children Isaiah, Abigail (Kayden), Sophie, and Jackson; Leif (Tekoa) Toews and children Keely and Thane; Renée (Ian) Bellamy and son Charlie; Caitlin (C.J.) Toews and son Jett; and Luke (Jasmine) Toews and children Lincoln, Oliver, and Honora. He is also survived by one brother and three sisters, and their families; in addition to being greatly missed by his large extended family. With respect for Percy’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. Richard Regnier of Winfield, Alberta was born on August 14, 1940, at Big Prairie, Alberta. With sadness we announce that he passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 84 years. Richard was raised in the Sundre/Bergen, Alberta area, which was a great location to grow up considering his passion for horses and the outdoors. This passion ensured a natural progression from childhood into Richard’s adult work career that started in the west country. Richard began his guiding career in the Jasper and Lake Louise areas as a wrangler, packer, and guide. While working in the Parks, he met the love of his life, Naomi Land, and they were married in 1963. Richard became a ‘Class A’ guide, a license he proudly held for over 40 years. He guided most sheep hunts for various outfitters west of Sundre, Caroline, Rocky Mountain House, and a few trips to the Yukon Territories. In the late 1960s, Richard was hired by Parks Canada to raise and train horses for them at the Ya Ha Tinda Ranch, the only federally operated working horse ranch in Canada. It was here that their son, Shawn, joined the family. In the early 70s, Richard and Naomi purchased a farm west of Caroline. During this time, he also got a job in the oil industry on oil rigs. He worked his way up to the position of driller and was employed with various companies for 25 years. At one point, Richard and Naomi sold the farm and moved to Alix, Alberta for a couple of years, but the mountains called them back to Caroline where they then bought an acreage. They tried their hand at raising pigs while Richard worked on the rigs. Richard also took an opportunity to buy a gravel truck, and eventually a tank truck, which kept him on the road until the oilpatch slowed down. At this time, Naomi was operating a restaurant in Caroline and Richard was promoted to a new position as the head dishwasher, coffee server, and gopher! Their next adventure was to sell the acreage and the trucks and purchase The Boundary Store and Café. They called The Boundary home until 1995 when they then purchased a quarter of land west of Buck Lake. While at Buck Lake, Richard worked various jobs; including at the PMU barn, as a truck driver, a pipefitter, and as a mechanic’s helper on oilfield engines and compressors until he eventually retired. Richard was an outgoing, outspoken man who told it like he saw it. There was never a doubt as to where he stood on any position, on any topic. Richard was also a hard-working and great neighbour. He was always full of stories to tell of his exploits in the back country, and he recited the most unusual, colorful, made-up poetry – that often was not suited for young ears! Richard was a devoted grandfather to his one and only grandchild, Brayden. Richard is survived by his son Shawn (Elaine) Regnier; his grandson Brayden; and his brother Ray (Marlene) Regnier; as well as a special niece Diane (Dave) Ketchum; and a special nephew Dusty (Birdy) Cooper. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Elliot (Sharon) Land; sister-in-law Nancy Land; brother-in-law Fred (Sandra) Land; brother-in-law Roger Land (Shelley Sands); sister-in-law Laurie (Rob) Bullick; in addition to many other nieces and nephews, family members, and good friends. Richard was predeceased by his wife Naomi; his parents Alphonse and Nora; along with eight siblings. With respect for Richard’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A private family gathering in his honour will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in Richard’s memory may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance, Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 ( www.stars.ca ). - TONA
God so loved her; He called her home. On April 24, 2025, in the quiet of the night, the angels came to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre and quietly whispered her name – Joyce Lorraine Tona (née Hinde) – it’s time. Joyce joyfully went to her eternal life, and to see, once again, her loving husband Jim. Joyce was a gift to Joe and Rosie Hinde, born into their farming family. She learned at a young age how to manage horses and farm equipment, that by our standards today would be considered primitive. In fact, her dad often remarked that Joyce could get the horse and binder through the potholes or bumps in the field very well, “But she always forgot about me in the back! I spent more time in the air than birds!” Joyce’s brother Joe arrived seven years later, and the family was complete. Joyce began her education in a one-room schoolhouse at the Grand Court School near Elnora, Alberta, which was a quick run down the hill from her house. She completed high school in Trochu, Alberta, close to home. Her love of school helped Joyce choose her career as a school teacher, as well as a piano teacher upon the completion of her musical studies with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her first teaching position was in Rimbey, teaching Grade 3. She always appreciated the opportunity to board with the Leboldus and Hoffman families. Her fellow teacher, Eva Tona, decided Joyce would make a great catch for Eva’s nephew, Jim Tona, and the set-up was on! They married = matchmaking successful! Donna, Diane, and Cindy made up the young family. In later years, Jim was always happy to get away to bull sales, as he said, “Everything on the farm was female: the cows, chickens, dog, horses, and all those girls in the house!” Soon after Diane was born they were told she had profound life challenges, and after much study, doctor consultations, and tears, Diane began living at Michener Centre where she still resides today – comfortable, in good health, and much loved. Joyce eventually retired from teaching, but continued as a substitute teacher and taught music in her home for over twenty years. Working together, both Joyce and Jim built a successful grain and cattle operation and brought purebred Charolais to the farm to start new adventures. In their retirement they travelled, went on cruises, ventured overseas, and spent a great deal of time enjoying their moments together. Joyce touched many lives through her musical and volunteer efforts at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, the Community Chorus, in addition to the Rimbey Lions Club, where Joyce was bestowed with the highest honour of a Melvin Jones Fellowship within the club. Joyce will be remembered for helping the neighbourhood ladies learn to drive, her horsemanship, her fair disposition, and her great, big heart. She was an amazing wife, mom, and mother-in-law and will be dearly missed. Joyce leaves to join her beloved husband Jim; her parents Joe and Rosie; her brother Joe; parents-in-law Peter and Fara; and her son-in-law Ray. She entrusts the stories of her life to Donna (Lyndon), Cindy, and Diane; along with her sisters-in-law Carollyne (Bob), and Marylin (Gene); her goddaughter Holly (Tom); special friends Bill Geertsma, Dawn Nesbitt, and Laverne (Michelle) Oberhammer; as well as several nieces and nephews; other extended family members; and many additional friends. She thanks all of you who impacted her life of 88 years! Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Father Leon Kler, Celebrant. The family wishes everyone to dress casually and comfortably. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow. A private Family Interment Service will be held later at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bluffton. At Joyce’s request, memorial donations may be made in her memory directly to the Rimbey Lions Club, Box 326, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. - WETTSTEIN
Annelise Wettstein (née Temperli) of Rimbey, Alberta was born on April 7, 1946, in Uster, Switzerland. With sadness we announce that she passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the age of 79 years. Annelise’s early years were full of mischief; closely watched by her older brother and surrounded by cousins who adored her. Although she was raised on a farm just outside of Zurich, she was determined not to become a farmer herself. Annelise pursued training as a hairdresser and attended a school for young women, where she learned a variety of homemaking skills. In her late teens, she met Hans Wettstein – who ultimately foiled her plans to escape farm life – and she married him at the age of 20 years. Together, they welcomed three children: Monika, Irene, and Andreas. In 1977, the family immigrated to Canada to further pursue a life in agriculture. Annelise was deeply involved in her community and spent many years volunteering with organizations such as the Chinook Ladies Club, the Beatty Heritage House Society, and the German-Canadian Club of Red Deer; as well as singing in both the United Church Choir and the Rimbey Community Chorus. Music was a lifelong passion for her. Annelise loved singing and playing both guitar and piano, often filling her home with music late into the night, surrounded by family and friends. She was always active and engaged in life. In her later years, Annelise enjoyed gardening, swimming, practicing yoga, playing music, and spending time with loved ones – often over a glass of wine… or two. Annelise will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Monika (Rob) Rondeel and Irene (Roland) Grutterink; as well as her five treasured grandchildren Jennifer Rondeel, Justin (Jessica) Rondeel, Aya (Nicolas) Karpluk, Rico Grutterink, and Selena Grutterink; and three cherished great-grandchildren Morrison, Johannes, and Petra. She will also be lovingly remembered by numerous relatives in Switzerland; in addition to many friends in Rimbey, and at the Country Roads RV Village in Yuma, Arizona. Annelise was predeceased by her parents Erna and Willi Temperli; her husband Hans; her son Andreas; and her brother Freddi. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Annelise’s Life will be held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend Ray Goodship officiating. She will be laid to rest alongside family in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. Henry was the eighth child of Lewis David and Ruth Maude Bergey, born on November 8, 1937, in a log cabin near Meadowview, Alberta. His birth, attended only by his father, marked the beginning of a life filled with compassion, love, and quiet strength. On January 4, 1964, Henry met Julianna “Julie”, the loved of his life and whom he fondly called, “Baby”. They were married shortly after, on March 30, 1964, and spent over six decades together. - WARTA
Jean Warta of Rimbey, Alberta was born Jantje de Jong on April 4, 1931, at Eindhoven, Holland, to Hilly and Gerrit de Jong, whom she adored. With great sadness, Jean’s family announces her passing at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the age of 94 years. Jean grew up in Holland with her two brothers Seine and Albertus during World War II. If they were eating soup when the bombing started, plaster fell into their soup, meaning no supper that night. After the war, she met and fell in love with Pieter “Peter” Warta, whom she married. Their first child, a daughter named Hilary, arrived in 1954. Three years later, they immigrated to Canada with only $75.00 to their name. They settled in Rimbey, Alberta, where they purchased a cozy little house, which they would live in for the remainder of their days. It was a very comfy nest for them and their children. After Hilary came two more daughters, Trudy and Jane, and their desire for a son was fulfilled when they were blessed with the birth of John. Jantje, wishing to be more Canadian, modified her name to Jean. She was a volunteer with Family and Community Support Services and was very involved with the church. Having a beautiful voice, Jean sang in the choir. Her love of singing was also evident in her home where she was often heard singing. Jean was also active in several bible classes, and she knew her bible well – from cover to cover. It was awe-inspiring to discuss her faith with her. Jean was soft-spoken and humble, making it easy to go to her and tell her your troubles. Being an excellent listener, she did not judge and offered sage advice. She had a love for quilting and produced numerous beautiful works. Jean’s garden was also a joy with abundant flowers, and she produced buckets of raspberries which she picked each summer. As a couple, Jean and Peter enjoyed travelling and ventured by car across much of Canada. These adventures resulted in many interesting stories in later years. Jean was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by her family in Canada and in Holland. She is survived by her children Hilary, Trudy (Leonard), Jane (Ad), and John (Koreen); along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and in Holland; as well as several extended family members and many friends. Jean was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband Peter; and her two brothers. A Graveside Service in Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey on Monday, May 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Ken Vanderploeg officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Columbarium alongside her loving husband. With a shared love with Peter for dogs, memorial donations in Jean’s memory may be made directly to Saving Grace Animal Society, Box 852, Alix, Alberta T0C 0B0 ( www.savinggracecanada.com ). Jerry passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the age of 82 years. Jerry was born on June 3, 1942, in Bentley, Alberta, the second of four children born to Willie and Jessie Thompson. He married the love of his life, Geraldine Bohlender, in January of 1972. Jerry was raised on the family farm in the Last West area, where he resided and continued to farm until his passing. He was a true farmer at heart, spending almost his entire life with love and respect for the land, and everything on it. Jerry was full of pride to have his grandchildren help him on the farm, running his equipment in the fields. Up until the age of 80 years, he was still actively haying his crops and finally, a year later, he sold the last of his cows. Although he retired, Jerry still continued to spend many hours on his quad touring the farm, fixing fences, spraying weeds, trapping moles, checking out the renter’s cows, and inspecting their crops. Even after he sold his cows, Jerry still loved going to the auction mart every Tuesday to see the current cattle prices, have coffee with the neighbours, and catch up on all the local news. Jerry treasured his family immensely, especially his grandchildren of whom he was extremely proud. He cherished taking them with him when he went for coffee and loved introducing them to his friends. He would always find time to watch them play ringette and hockey, whenever they were playing nearby. Jerry also enjoyed many trips camping and fishing at Open Creek Dam Campground, and he always took great pleasure in attending numerous functions and ball games at the Last West Community Hall. With broken hearts we announce the passing of Alyssa Leah Bundt of Bluffton, Alberta. Alyssa passed from this world, to join her grandmother, on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 18 years. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Alyssa spent the first seven years of her life in the Calgary and Cochrane areas before moving to Bluffton. Her bubbly and outgoing personality allowed her to make friends easily wherever she went. Alyssa’s kindness and compassion were evident to all who knew her. Comfortable in a ball gown, but known more for flannel shirts and overalls, Alyssa was a ruthless competitor in many sports, and she loved her time on her dirt bike and longboard. She was a talented artist and would spend hours hand-drawing Christmas and birthday cards for her loved ones; another sign of her thoughtfulness that did not go unnoticed. Alyssa possessed a great interest in mental health care; and she held a deep love of animals, as she helped look after numerous dogs and cats over the years. An avid reader, Alyssa could spend countless hours reading or re-reading one of the books in her extensive collection. Alyssa is survived by her loving parents, Kim and Kelly; her older brother Brett; and her twin brother Logan. She is also survived by her grandfather Len; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends whom she treasured. Alyssa was predeceased by her uncle Scott; her cousin Savanna; and her grandmother Debbie, who cherished her grandchildren more than words can describe, and who Alyssa loved so deeply. Alyssa had a fiery temper and was quick to unleash her wrath on those she felt had done wrong, as well as defend those who were treated unjustly. In Alyssa’s spirit, let us please be kind to one another, treat each other with respect and compassion, and help those in need every chance you have. Remember Me By Margaret Mead To the living, I am gone,To the sorrowful, I will never return,To the angry, I was cheated,But to the happy, I am at peace,And to the faithful, I have never left. He spent many hours on his quad touring the farm, and many more hours puttering in the shop building things out of anything he could get his hands on! Adolf was notorious for making everyone laugh and smile – whether it was his jokes or his pranks – there was never a dull moment when he was around. He also possessed a strong love for music and was always willing to play a song or two on his harmonica. Adolf lived a full life surrounded by an active belief and faith. He will be dearly missed. Adolf is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lillian; his three sons Lorne (Terisa) of Langley, B.C.; Shane (Michele) of Airdrie; and Allen (Lisa) of Rimbey; as well as eight cherished grandchildren Alexandria, Austin, Kassandra, Brandon, Tina, Adrien, Blaire, and Colton; and four precious great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers Leon of Rimbey; and Gussie (Faye) of Bashaw; one sister of Sherwood Park; one sister-in-law Erna Adam of Camrose; in addition to several nieces and nephews; his extended family in Germany; and many close friends. Adolf was predeceased by his parents; along with two brothers and a sister. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Papa, and husband, Donald “Donny” Gordon Bell of Bluffton, Alberta. Don passed away at the age of 56 years at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday, March 1, 2025, with his sons holding his hands, his wife by his side, and his daughter-in-law Kristen helping ease his passing. Don was born and raised in Rimbey, Alberta; a son to Gordon and Ruby Bell. He was a very special person who loved nothing in life more than he loved his family; and he was an incredibly caring and generous Papa to his ten grandkids. Don possessed a genuine sense of humour that could easily make people laugh. He truly touched the life of anyone he met. He also had a passion and love for his dogs like no other. Eva, his German Shepherd, was Don’s travel companion and would cruise everywhere with him in his work truck and personal vehicles. She was at every hunting camp, just like one of his kids. Don will be most remembered for his intense passion for hunting and fishing, and the incredible knowledge of the outdoors that he was never shy to teach. He will also be fondly remembered for his loud contagious laugh, the candy bags and chocolate milk in hand at the door for the grandkids, and the rev of those Harley’s! Don leaves behind his legacy that nothing matters more than family, in addition to his ongoing gift for sharing and passing on his vast abundance of hunting and fishing knowledge. To say that Don will be greatly missed is a huge understatement. His memory will always live on though his family legacy that will ultimately be cherished in the hearts of all. He was a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart Charleyne; and a loving father to his sons Don Bell Jr., Jerry Bell, and Tom Bell. Don was an extremely proud Papa as Don Jr. and Chelsea blessed him with three beautiful grandchildren Dawn, Ryder, and Rowan; Jerry and Kristen provided Don with two more beautiful grandchildren Isaac, and Charley; and Tom and Danielle together gave him another five beautiful grandchildren Tucker, Kasey, Jeppson, Rosie, and Penelope. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel “Dan” James Egeland of Rimbey, Alberta on Friday, February 28, 2025. Dan passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 74 years. Dan was born on December 30, 1950, the sixth of nine children born to Ellard Robert “ER” and Jean Selma Egeland in High River, Alberta. He grew up in Blackie, Alberta and excelled at sports; including basketball, baseball, curling, plus track and field. Dan also enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, riding motor bikes, and classic cars. Throughout his high school years and for many years afterwards, Dan worked at the Egeland family John Deere dealership, right up until it was sold in 1981. His love for anything John Deere continued throughout his life. After the sale of the dealership, Dan moved north to the Bowden and Innisfail areas where he farmed and worked as a mechanic. He was then employed by Davron Trucking, and through a co-worker, Andrew, he met Pat. This meeting transformed into a long and loving relationship with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who Dan adored – and the feeling was mutual! After a few years, Dan bought his own manure spreader with Davron, and he made many friends while he was employed there. Dan also worked at Watts Projects, Pollitt Construction, and Crossfield Directional Drilling through the years. He gained many endearing nicknames from friends and family; including Pookie, Pook, Eggy, and Danny. In 2006, Dan and Pat purchased their dream acreage just south of Rimbey, where Dan could fix up his collection of Ford trucks and keep himself busy with other projects on the property. Dan was always there to help anyone if they needed help, and many times they would end up staying with Dan and Pat until they were able to get back on their feet. He possessed a kind and caring heart. Dan cherished his friends and family immensely, especially the grandchildren, and he would spend as much time as he could with them. He would attend hockey games, piano recitals, hang with everyone at the acreage, or just simply relax and watch movies together. Dan also had a very special relationship with two of his nephews Jerry Ellice and Larry Molyneux, and their sons Luke and Justice, who were like grandchildren to him. “Pook will be dearly missed by many. He touched many lives and will live on in our memories.” Dan is survived by his spouse Patricia Chapman; and his children Richard Chapman, Andrew Chapman, Michael (Marie) Chapman, and Helen (Alvin) Peck. He was adored by his grandchildren Cody, Cassandra (Len), Jesse, Erin (Paul), Kirstyn (Hayden), Janessa (Matt), Myles, and Harry; and his great-grandchildren Tashia, Trinity, Karson, Kaylee, Ryder, Lily, Quinn, Adalyn, Hope, and Raven. He is also survived by his brothers Bob (Linda), Ray (Jean), and Eric (Teresa); his sisters Velma Huntsberger, Jan (Jim) Ellice, Judy (Spence) Molyneux, Penny (Barry) Egeland, and Cindy (Doug) McFadden; as well as many nieces and nephews, and their children; several other extended family members; in addition to a large circle of treasured friends. Dan was predeceased by his parents, ER and Jean Egeland; his brothers-in-law Bob Huntsberger and William Marbrow; and his sisters-in-law Ann Pierce and Gwenda Scott. With sadness we share that Louise Ruth Sanderson (née Skeels) of Rimbey, Alberta was taken into the Lord’s arms on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the age of 91 years. Louise was born in Bentley, Alberta, the eldest daughter of Lester and Alda Skeels. At the age of three years, she moved with her family from the Forshee area to the farm northeast of Rimbey. Louise attended school at the Monte Vista School, later graduating from the Rimbey High School as the proud valedictorian of the Class of ’52. Shortly following her graduation, on November 10, 1952, she married the tall, handsome neighbour, Tom Sanderson, who only lived 1 ½ miles from where she grew up. Together with Tommy, the couple raised two sons, Rick and Jim. They farmed together with Tommy’s parents until Donald passed away, and his mom, Dorothy, moved into the Parkland Manor. In August of 1977, Louise and Tommy, along with Jim, moved to British Columbia, settling in Kelowna, while Rick took over the family farm. Louise was a lover of learning. She attended Okanagan College and received her business administration diploma. For a few years she worked for H & R Block. Louise was an avid gardener, and appreciated the fact that she could grow ‘soooo’ many more vegetables, flowers, and fruit in the Okanagan! In the late 80s, Louise and Tommy became caretakers at the Fraser Lodge Campground on Sugar Lake, an absolute highlight of the British Columbia chapter of her life. In 1990, they relocated from Kelowna to Lumby to be closer to the lake, and they loved the smaller community. After Tommy’s passing, Louise returned to Alberta and settled in Red Deer where she was very involved with the Cornerstone Gospel Church. Louise was fortunate to move into the Valley View Manor in Rimbey when it was newly built, and she absolutely loved the view from her room that overlooked the valley – and livestock – to the west. She also loved her daily walks out of town on the trail “down to the bush.” Louise was an enthusiast of walks in nature, the farming culture, and a good “chewing of the fat” with friends and loved ones. Lovingly remembered, Louise is survived by her sons Rick (Evelyn) Sanderson of Rimbey; and Jim Sanderson (Tracey Baryski) of Calgary; as well as her five precious grandchildren Crystal (Stephen) Frost, Kimberley (Joshua) Estabrooks, Tony (Haleigh) Sanderson, Zachery (Sua) Sanderson, and Sasha Sanderson; her step-grandchildren Kendra and Jensen Wadams; and three great-grandchildren London, Arlo, and Darius. She is also survived by her much-loved brother Gerald (May) Skeels; and her sister-in-law Joyce Skeels. Louise was predeceased by her husband Tom; sister Thelma Galisky; and brother Delmer Skeels. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Louise’s Life will be held at the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend Dale Fallon officiating. She will be laid to rest at a later date in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Rimbey. If desired, memorial donations in Louise’s memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, 306, 10430 – 61 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T6H 2J3 ( www.alzheimer.ca ); or to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 ( www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com ). Our world lost a remarkable man. James “Jim” Harry Anderson passed away peacefully at home in Rimbey, Alberta, surrounded by his family, on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the age of 74 years. Jim, one of three children of Ron and Mary Anderson, was born on November 9, 1950, in Rimbey. He grew up on the Anderson Farm south of Rimbey, always building and inventing things, even as a young boy. Jim enjoyed 4H, hockey, and was a great help to his parents on the farm. He graduated from the Rimbey High School in 1969. After a short stint of driving truck for the Bluffton feed mill, Jim attended Red Deer College and then Olds College. In 1972 Jim met the love of his life, Jackie Jacobs, the district home economist in Rimbey at the time. They both knew early in their relationship that this was the person they each wanted to spend their life with, and they were married in November of 1973. They had two sons, Jeff and Brendon. The farm was a busy life, but everyone pitched in. Jim did many innovative things, early adopting rotational grazing and electric fencing, and fencing off the riparian area along the Blindman River. He was also actively involved in his community as a 4H leader, a director of the Grey Wooded Forage Association, a board member for the Forshee Hall, and mentoring in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Jim was known for his inventive spirit, having developed the Frostfree Nosepump in 1999, which became his passion for the next 25 years. The pump sales have reached every province in Canada and many of the states in the USA, as well as some countries in Europe. Jim continued to farm until his youngest son Brendon and family took over the farming operation in 2012. He has also been blessed to have his eldest son, Jeff, take over the Frostfree Nosepump business. Jim was predeceased by his mother, father, aunts, and uncles. He is survived by his wife Jackie; his son Jeffery and wife Danielle Anderson of Airdrie, and their sons Josh, Alex (Nicole), Stephen (Claire), and Zac; his son Brendon and wife Melanie Anderson of Rimbey, and their children Henry and Ellie. Jim was a great-grandpa to Stephen and Claire’s children Isabel, Bryson, and Arden. He is also survived by his sister Marion Anderson of Innisfail, and her children Stephen and Leanne Ejack (Justin Raycraft); his brother Bob (Gloria) Anderson of Calgary; in addition to numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins who he was very close to. Jim was a deeply loved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, cousin, and friend… and his passing leaves a significant void in the family and in the community. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, 5109 – 54 Street, Rimbey on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with Mr. Blake Hall hosting. - SCHEFFELMAIER
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, and brother Albert Harold Scheffelmaier of Rimbey, Alberta, formerly of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on Monday, February 10, 2025, at the age of 96 years. Albert was born at the Coronation Hospital on December 18, 1928, and was the first of ten children born to Adolf and Molly Scheffelmaier. His early years were spent in Spondin, Alberta before the family moved to Battle Ridge, Alberta, where he began his education. After completing school, Albert worked on his father’s farm and also spent summers working for Mr. Shacker. In 1951 Albert married Gwendoline Cole, who lived just down the road. Their wedding was special – it was the first held in the newly built Fairfield Baptist Church. Together, Albert and Gwen raised three children Ken, Larry, and Connie. As a family, they were active members of the church where Albert played many roles, including Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and, fondly, “the candy man” to all the children. Albert was a man of many passions. He loved the game of baseball, where he pitched and played third base for the Bonnie Doon Baseball Club. He and Gwen also shared a love for curling, often participating in bonspiels together. A dedicated grain farmer, Albert took great pride in his Purebred Simmental cattle. He was among the first to import these cattle from Switzerland, and his success at cattle shows throughout the province was a testament to his hard work and expertise. Yet, it was hunting that became his true passion – spending countless hours with his favourite people at Limestone Mountain, quadding and hunting. In 2011 after more than 60 years of farming at Brownfield, Albert and Gwen retired to Sylvan Lake, where they quickly made new friends and enjoyed the simple pleasures of meeting for coffee. They also joined the Sylvan Lake Seniors Club and became active members of the Alliance Community Church, where they cherished the fellowship of their new community. When their health began to decline, they moved to long-term care in Rimbey, where they received exceptional care. Albert, in particular, was pampered by all his special ladies. Albert’s legacy lives on through his children Ken (Randi), Larry, and Connie (Dan); as well as his ten grandchildren Andrea (Kelly), Brett (Lisa), Jonathan, Rebekah (Charlie), Stephanie (Roland), Sasha (Eric), Julia (Matt), David (Anita), Cody (Alicia), and Brandon (Chantell). He also leaves behind seventeen great-grandchildren Kendra, Kyle, Alexis, Brielle, Sophie, Keira, Ezra, Darius, Forest, Arwen, Willamina, Aries, Hunter, Blake, Keaton, Kaden, and Adley. Albert is also survived by his sisters Helen, Esther, Shirley (Bill), and Linda (Leo); his sister-in-law Marie; and his brother-in-law Don; in addition to being cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends. Albert was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Molly; his beloved wife Gwen; son-in-law Hugh Symons; parents-in-law Glen and Hilda Cole; brothers Sam, Herb, and Richard Scheffelmaier; sisters Verna and Erv Altheim, and Jean Geddes; and brother-in-law Alvin Suchotzky. Albert’s life was a reflection of his love for family, faith, and community. His dedication to his family, his passions, and the countless lives he touched will remain in our hearts forever. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Albert’s Life will be held at the Brownfield Baptist Church, Brownfield, Alberta on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend Jim Rilling and Pastor Nathan Harris officiating. Interment will precede the Service, at 11:00 a.m., in the Fairfield Cemetery, near Brownfield. On January 4, 1964, she met Henry, the love of her life, and they were married on March 30, 1964. Their bond was unwavering, and Julie’s greatest wish was to be with Henry until the very end. She passed away peacefully while holding his hand. Julie’s love extended far beyond her immediate family. For many years, she and Henry cared for foster children, including a time when they opened their hearts and home to ten children, with three babies under one year of age. Julie also possessed a special love for Mexico and cherished the close-knit “Mexican family” she came to know and love. Julie’s legacy of love, compassion, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Julie is deeply mourned by her devoted husband Henry; her children Lewis, Gordon (Cindy), and Kimberly (Jason); as well as her cherished grandchildren Tifa, Peyote, Cyrus, Ripley, Ezlan, and Sahara; and many others whose lives were touched by Julie’s warmth, kindness, and generosity. With respect for Julie’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. If desired, memorial donations in her memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice.
