It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerimiah “Jerry” Wager Thompson of Rimbey, Alberta. Jerry passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the age of 82 years.
Jerry was born on June 3, 1942, in Bentley, Alberta, the second of four children born to Willie and Jessie Thompson. He married the love of his life, Geraldine Bohlender, in January of 1972. Jerry was raised on the family farm in the Last West area, where he resided and continued to farm until his passing. He was a true farmer at heart, spending almost his entire life with love and respect for the land, and everything on it. Jerry was full of pride to have his grandchildren help him on the farm, running his equipment in the fields. Up until the age of 80 years, he was still actively haying his crops and finally, a year later, he sold the last of his cows.
Although he retired, Jerry still continued to spend many hours on his quad touring the farm, fixing fences, spraying weeds, trapping moles, checking out the renter’s cows, and inspecting their crops. Even after he sold his cows, Jerry still loved going to the auction mart every Tuesday to see the current cattle prices, have coffee with the neighbours, and catch up on all the local news.
Jerry treasured his family immensely, especially his grandchildren of whom he was extremely proud. He cherished taking them with him when he went for coffee and loved introducing them to his friends. He would always find time to watch them play ringette and hockey, whenever they were playing nearby. Jerry also enjoyed many trips camping and fishing at Open Creek Dam Campground, and he always took great pleasure in attending numerous functions and ball games at the Last West Community Hall. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his kind heart and his terrific sense of humour.
Jerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Geraldine; and his son Trevor (Donna) Thompson, grandson Will, and granddaughter Kaitlyn, all of Crossfield, Alberta. He is also survived by two brothers Bill (Marie) Thompson of Calgary; and Allan Thompson of Rimbey; one sister Dianne Thompson of Rocky Mountain House; in addition to numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and good friends. Jerry was predeceased by his parents Willie and Jessie.
A Celebration of Jerry’s Life will be held at the Last West Community Hall, near Rimbey on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with the Reverend Ross Smillie officiating. If desired, memorial donations in Jerry’s memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
