With profound grief and sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Purle “Henry” Bergey of Rimbey, Alberta. Henry passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the age of 87 years.
Henry was the eighth child of Lewis David and Ruth Maude Bergey, born on November 8, 1937, in a log cabin near Meadowview, Alberta. His birth, attended only by his father, marked the beginning of a life filled with compassion, love, and quiet strength. On January 4, 1964, Henry met Julianna “Julie”, the loved of his life and whom he fondly called, “Baby”. They were married shortly after, on March 30, 1964, and spent over six decades together. Earlier this year, on February 5, 2025, Henry held Julie’s hand as she peacefully passed away, their love enduring until her final breath.
Together, Henry and Julie authored Our Story, a photo-filled memoir chronicling their life’s journey. The family is honoured to share this cherished book with anyone who wishes to know them better.
Henry and Julie opened their hearts and home to many over the years, caring for numerous foster children – once even nurturing ten children at the same time, including three babies under one year of age. Their love knew no borders; they formed deep and lasting bonds with their “Mexican Family” during their time in Mexico, a place that held a special spot in their hearts.
Henry is deeply mourned by his children Lewis, Gordon (Cindy), and Kimberly (Jason); as well as his cherished grandchildren Peyote, Cyrus, Ripley, Ezlan, Sahara, and Tifa; and many others whose lives were touched by Henry’s boundless kindness, generosity, and sharp sense of humour.
With respect for Henry’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. In honour of his memory, donations may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
