CARRUTHERS
It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Richard “Rick” John Carruthers of Rimbey, Alberta. Rick passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the age of 60 years.
Rick was born on March 24, 1964, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta to Carol and Glenn Carruthers. He was the eldest of three children. Rick’s childhood was spent in Wetaskiwin, Winfield, Edmonton, and Fort Saskatchewan. He started school in Winfield, then attended elementary school in Edmonton, and completed his junior and senior high school years in Fort Saskatchewan. During his years in Edmonton, Rick joined the Air Cadets – an experience he quite appreciated. In 1988, he relocated to Rimbey. Rick was employed at several jobs during his lifetime, most notably: DRT, Delta Cats Contracting, Pollitt Construction, the County of Ponoka, and at the Bluffton Landfill. He loved his job at the Bluffton Landfill because of the puppies and children he encountered on the days that the landfill was open to the public.
Rick was a quiet, shy man who throughout his life enjoyed any opportunity for adventure. He loved hiking and camping, but after a while the tent was swiftly replaced with a more comfy motel room in the last few years. One of Rick’s greatest passions was fishing. Together with his brother Calvin, many days were spent out on the lakes around Rimbey trying to catch the big one. Rick also enjoyed road trips, and often would embark on unforgettable adventures with Calvin. He possessed a huge heart and was an awesome big brother. Rick was compassionate like his father, loved animals, and children adored him. His biggest secret was his innate ability to bake amazing cookies – especially meringue cookies! He also liked gardening, which he inherited from his Grandma Langmuir.
Rick is survived by his children Joshua, Dillan, and Samantha; his beloved brother and sister, Calvin Carruthers and Wendy (John) Parker; as well as a grandson Matthew. He will also be remembered by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Rick was predeceased by his parents Carol and Glenn; his maternal grandparents Esther and Sandy Langmuir; and his paternal grandparents Audrey and Roy Carruthers.
With respect for Rick’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. He will be laid to rest with his parents in the Mount Clare Cemetery, Winfield at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 100 – 119, 14 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 1Z6 (www.heartandstroke.ca). Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page.
