  • GREGORY

Betty Marie Gregory of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully at Bethany Calgary on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at the age of 89 years. Betty was born on the Door Key Ranch near Fort Macleod, Alberta on September 21, 1932 to Jim and Mary McNab. She had many happy memories growing up in the family of nine children. At a young age, Betty developed a love for the outdoors – and horses – as she worked alongside her dad. She carried that passion forward throughout her life. When Betty was a young woman she loved to dance, and that is where she met the love of her life, Gordon "Demps" Gregory, a young Air Force officer. They were married on April 18, 1953 in Claresholm, Alberta and lived in many communities across Canada for the next several years, finally settling in Calgary. Together they shared the joy of raising five children: Don, Lonnie, Karen, David, and Gary. In 1978 Betty and Demps were able to pursue their dream and started their own broodmare farm, Down Home Acres, in Delacour, Alberta where they raised Standardbred horses. In 1990 Betty moved with her husband to Meridian Farms near High River, Alberta, where she continued to help breed excellent race horses. Over the years they were awarded with numerous honours; most notably, the Breeders’ Cup Trophy and in 2004, the Breeder of the Year Award. Betty and Demps resided in the High River area for many years, eventually retiring fully and moving into town. Betty loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed many hobbies, although she was best known for her stunningly gorgeous gardens and incredible paintings. Betty is survived by her cherished family: her children, Don Gregory of High River; Lonnie (Ron) Harty of Calgary; Karen Wilson of Chippawa, Ontario; and Gary (Lisa) Gregory of Yanchep, Australia; her daughter-in-law Julie Allan of High River; as well as eight treasured grandchildren: Gordie, Jessica, Shea (Jessica), Tanis (Steve), Kelsey (Marvin), Carlee (Craig), Baylee, and Cleo; and ten precious great grandchildren: Zack, Paige, Arianna, Donovan, Kaylee, Brooklyn, Kai, Kaden, Milarose, and Remi. She will also be lovingly remembered by four sisters, Grace Kennedy of Fort Macleod; Ruby (Eric) Thomsen of Vernon, B.C.; Jean Anderson of Fort Macleod; and Bonnie (Jim) Murphy of Calgary; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, additional family members, and many close friends. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Mary; her husband of 61 years, Demps in 2014; her son David in 2019; one brother Bob; three sisters: Pat Sterling, Josie Burrows, and Marjorie MacLennan; along with many in-laws and other relatives. "Betty will be forever remembered by her loving family ... and will be sadly missed." A Celebration of Betty’s Life was held at the Royal Canadian Legion – Chapelhow Branch 284, 606 – 38 Avenue NE, Calgary on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverend Nancy Nourse officiating. • LACZO

With the heaviest hearts we announce the sudden passing of Mark Joseph Laczo of Bluffton, Alberta on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the age of 55 years. Mark was born on February 16, 1968, to Rosemarie and Dale Laczo in Rimbey, Alberta. He spent most of his life in Bluffton; a life that was a testament to his passion for farming, and an unwavering love for trucks, race cars, and his family. From the earliest age, Mark could be found on the farm, riding his motorbike and 4x4ing down at the river, and in any mud pit he could find. Mark worked as a directional driller on the oil rigs for many years, where he enjoyed his work and made many lifelong friends, all while still running his farm with the intention of returning to farming full time. Yet it was his enthusiasm for big tractors and farm equipment, big trucks and race cars that truly defined his character. Mark spent countless hours at Central Alberta Raceways, where he was the go-to guy for the racetrack for many years. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and his presence and spirit will be dearly missed by everyone in the community that he served with love and dedication. Beyond his passion for farming and racing, Mark was a devoted husband and loving father to Jessi, who was the light of his life, and with whom he spent many afternoons on various adventures around the farm. Mark will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 26 years, Donna; his daughter Jessi; parents Rosemarie and Dale; and his sisters Angela (Neil) of Hussar, Alberta; and Roxanne of Austin, Texas. He will also be lovingly remembered by several nieces and nephews, many extended family members, and a giant circle of cherished friends, neighbours, and acquaintances. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Mark’s Life was held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, 5109 – 54 Street, Rimbey on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Marco Williams-Ste-Marie officiating. • LUNDSTROM

Surrounded by family, Clair Ellis Lundstrom of Rimbey, Alberta took his last breath on Monday, January 1, 2024, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 86 years. Clair was born on March 1, 1937, in Rimbey, Alberta to Sven and Greta (née Norstrom) Lundstrom.  He started his schooling in a one-room schoolhouse at Harmonien, and then attended Grade 11 in Bluffton before graduating high school in Rimbey.  Following graduation, Clair joined his father Sven on the family farm east of Hoadley.  Together, Sven and Clair raised Hereford cattle and in later years they started to sell more grain.  Early in his farming career, Clair would venture to the Bluffton Creamery to pick up the milk cheque, and it was there that he met a bubbly blonde, Agnes Straarup.  They were united in marriage on June 29, 1960.  Agnes and Clair raised two daughters; with Candis arriving in 1966, and in 1968 Tanya followed to make the family complete. Clair was a kind, patient, and compassionate man, especially when it came to his animals.  There were several times when his daughters would get home from school and they would find their dad in the barn.  Clair would be found with a labouring cow’s head on his lap, and he would be stroking her head and telling her that everything was going to be fine.  When the cattle were ready to be shipped to the auction mart, Clair could pretty much load the truck by himself.  He would round up the cows and walk them down to the loading chute – he would never run his cattle.  There was one autumn when they had sold their cattle to a buyer in eastern Canada.  The train that was transporting the cattle to Ontario had derailed, killing most of the cattle.  Clair was upset about that for months.  He also had a soft spot for the family’s pets.  On one excursion to the vet in Rimbey, the family’s yellow lab, Max, got extra snuggles from Clair.  Since Max had never ridden in the front of the truck, and certainly had never been to town, with every passing mile he scooted closer on the seat towards Clair.  Then with every passing vehicle he would bark directly into Clair’s ear.   Upon arrival at the vet’s office, Clair said his right leg had fallen asleep from the weight of the dog cuddling on his thigh… and he could definitely hardly hear out of his right ear!  But he did say that Max was very happy and popular at the vet’s office! Both Clair and Agnes were very active in the community.  While Agnes tended to her activities with the Liberty Hall, the Springdale Ladies Club, and the Bluffton Parent/Teacher Association; Clair was not far behind her being “volun-told” to paint, clean, or repair something!  Of which he didn’t mind a bit! At the beginning of July every year, the family would go camping and hiking to British Columbia, mostly in the Yoho National Park area.  Clair would pick river rocks and driftwood for hours.  In the winter months, several families in the community would rent the pool in Ponoka, and they would all go swimming.  Clair was also an avid ice fisherman, and he would keep Agnes busy pickling fish.  He did not eat pickled fish, but he liked to think Agnes enjoyed pickling them!  One winter day when Clair and Agnes were out feeding the cattle, Agnes was chased onto the hay wagon by an angry cow.  Three weeks later they ate that cow.  Like a true Alberta beef farmer, Clair loved his steak and potatoes! As the girls left home and life became less hectic, Clair and Agnes took up golfing.  Most often they could be found at the golf course in Breton, and they loved to share their golf stories with their family.  While Agnes was curling in the winter, Clair was more than pleased to become the “official, unofficial coach”! Clair was completely in love with his grandchildren, and over the years he was their proudest spectator as he attended hockey games, baseball games, dance recitals, band performances, and cadet parades.  He took the greatest pleasure in attending birthday parties, graduations, and most recently, the wedding of his granddaughter.  He even attended the playschool’s, “Spring Fling”, to which he exclaimed he might never make that mistake again! Clair adored his grandchildren, loved listening to stories about the great-grandchildren, and he was so proud of them all! Our lives go on without you, but nothing is the same. We have to hide our heartache, when someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that loved you, silent are the tears that fall. Living here without you, is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, your heart was kind and true. And when we needed someone, we could always count on you. The special years will not return, when we are all together. But with the love in our hearts, you walk with us forever. Clair is survived by his daughters Candis (Richard) Edwards of Red Deer; and Tanya Lundstrom of Sylvan Lake; as well as four cherished grandchildren Jessa (Chris) Wilkinson; Kimberley (Dustin) Patapoff; Scott (Danika) Morse; and Carter Taylor; and three precious great-grandchildren Layne, Blake, and Ryder.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law Kenny (Lucille) Straarup of Calgary; a nephew Gary (Teresa) Barr of Edmonton; and close family friend Susan Grieshaber-Otto of Hoadley; in addition to many close cousins, nieces and nephews, and dear friends.  Clair was predeceased by his parents; and by his beloved wife and best friend of 63 years, Agnes, who passed away a few short months ago in September, 2023. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Valley View Manor and at Rimbey FCSS for their absolute care and compassion through these difficult few months. With respect for Clair’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held.  He will be laid to rest, together with his loving wife Agnes, in the Hoadley Cemetery at a later date.  With consideration for Clair’s love for animals… if desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Saving Grace Animal Society, Box 852, Alix, Alberta  T0C 0B0 (www.savinggracecanada.com).  Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. • SKEELS

With broken hearts the family of Delmer Skeels was left to say goodbye, upon his unexpected and sudden passing at home on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the age of 86 years. Delmer was born in the Bentley General Hospital on June 30, 1937, to his parents Lester and Alda Skeels.   He was brought home to the farm where he resided for the next 86 years.  As a youngster, Delmer enjoyed life on the farm with his parents and siblings Louise, Gerald, and Thelma.  He always had a variety of animals to care for and nurture.  Delmer attended school to Grade 8 at the Monte Vista School, riding to and from class on horseback.  His education was complicated by health problems and hearing loss. As a young man – along with farming – Delmer did some carpentry work with his uncle Harold and Harold’s sons.  In addition, he broke numerous horses to ride, and milked a countless number of cows.  Delmer switched wells at the Rimbey Gas Plant for a while, and he loved dancing – privileged to be the best man at six weddings!  In 1963 Delmer married Joyce Holosko and they moved about 200 feet into their new home.  They continued to dairy farm with Lester and Alda until 1970; venturing into beef cows, transplant heifers, feed horses, as well as developing a fine herd of commercial Simmental-Limousin cross cattle. Delmer enjoyed participating in amateur rodeo, and served on the Rimbey Rodeo Board for 20 years.  He also fulfilled roles with the Rimbey Agricultural Society and the Alberta Range Patrol program.  As a family they were actively involved with the Bluffton 4H Beef Club, with Delmer spending some time as both an assistant and as the club leader.  The Skeels Family was acknowledged with the Ponoka County Farm Family honour in 1987. As a young family, they enjoyed many memorable times with very good friends, the Riley family.  They also enjoyed more than 20 years of trail riding in the mountains with family and friends, particularly the Muller and Jaburek crews; and they are fondly remembered working cattle with special neighbours Bob and Donna Pecharsky.  Delmer even had a dandy fish pond built in the pasture to enjoy with his family – especially the grandkids! In 2007 Delmer semi-retired and sold most of the herd; blending the few remaining cattle with Dan’s herd, and he continued winter feeding right up until this year.  He has always enjoyed staying active on the farm.  Delmer and Joyce continued haying right into this year – in fact, he was hauling bales in October!  Well into his 80s, on Delmer’s bucket list was a bigger “manure spreader” – of which he finally got!  In June of this year, the Skeels family was recognized as a long-standing pioneer family of the Rimbey area at the annual Oldtimers Reunion. In later years, Delmer and Joyce were fortunate enough to take pleasure in many bus trips across Canada and the U.S.A.; creating many memories and friendships along the way.  Their recent favourite pastimes included eradicating gophers; and road trips out west looking for wild horses, which they did just four days prior to Delmer’s passing. “He was a farmer, hardworking – straightforward – social and caring… Delmer will be missed, but his memory will live on.” Delmer is survived by his loving wife and partner of 60 years, Joyce; his sons Stan (Vykki), Wes (Leslie), and Dan (Karen); as well as his grandchildren Mackenzie (Corey), Garren (Trinity), Kesler (Korah), Tyler, Jodi, Chelsea and her son Keaton, and Jessie.  He is also survived by his sister Louise Sanderson; his brother Gerald (May) Skeels; in addition to numerous additional family members; and many close and dear friends.  Special mention to Rick and Evelyn Sanderson for allowing Delmer and Joyce to use their children Crystal, Kim, and Tony as practice grandkids; and also to honorary grandson Gary Waldron.  Delmer was predeceased by his parents; his sister Thelma Galisky; along with many special aunts, uncles, other relatives, and good friends. With respect for Delmer’s wishes, an Informal Memorial Gathering will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, 5109 – 54 Avenue, Rimbey on Sunday, November 19, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  If desired, memorial donations in Delmer’s memory may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance, Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, Alberta  T2E 8M7 (www.stars.ca); or to the charity of one’s choice.  Thoughts and messages to the family may be shared through the condolence area located at the bottom of this page. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Shirley Alice Ford, of Rimbey, Alberta, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care, at the age of 87 years. Shirley was comforted by her daughters at her side, passing away surrounded by love on Thursday, October 19, 2023. Shirley was born in Haliburton, Ontario on June 9, 1936. She was the first of twelve children born to Norman and Lenita Hirons. As a young woman, Shirley met Gerald Tustian at the race track in Fort Erie, Ontario, where Shirley was a cook and Gerald was a jockey. They were united in marriage and moved to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan where they lived in a little cabin that had no power or water. Through the course of several years, they raised three daughters Joanne, Lynita, and Sandra. The family relocated to Cochrane, Alberta, where they resided for many years before selling their acreage there and moving to an acreage at Rimbey. After 21 years of marriage, Shirley and Gerald separated. Shirley later married Tom Ford of Rimbey, and after quite a few years they also separated. Eventually Shirley and Gerald found their way back to each other, and they moved to their daughter and son-in-law’s farm near Rimbey. It was during this time that Shirley endured a bad stroke, but was able to go back home following her rehabilitation. Sadly, Gerald suffered a heart attack shortly after that, so Shirley then went to live with her daughter Joanne for many years. Shirley subsequently relocated to the Winfield Seniors Lodge where she was a resident for a time before moving into Rimbey Long Term Care where she resided until her passing. Shirley had many friends and possessed an amazing sense of humour. She absolutely loved her old cat, Booties, who was her cherished furry companion. Shirley is survived by her two daughters Joanne (Cliff) Reynolds; and Lynita (Roy) Stevenson; as well as four brothers Dale (Peggy), Garry, Terry (Lou Anne), and Bobbie (Debbie); four sisters Donna (Jon), Norma (Rick), Sandy (Bill), and Cindy (Jim); in addition to numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends. Shirley was predeceased by her first husband Gerald; her daughter Sandra “Sandy”; her parents Norman and Lenita; three brothers Denny, Philip, and Larry; along with several close friends. With respect for Shirley’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. She will be laid to rest in the Bradshaw Cemetery at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in her memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com). For one thing, I’d have told you not to worry about me… I’m with the Lord in Heaven now – You knew that’s where I’d be. I’m sorry that you’re feeling sad for I’m so happy now… I’ve asked the Lord to ease the hurt and comfort you somehow. It’s hard at the beginning, but I know you’ll make it through. • LUNDSTROM

With unending love in our hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce that Agnes Elise H. Lundstrom (née Straarup) of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, at the age of 85 years, on Friday, September 22, 2023, after battling several health conditions. Agnes was born in a farmhouse in the Last West District on September 13, 1938, to Danish immigrants Alfred and Mary Straarup. Shortly after her birth, the family returned to Denmark and remained there until WWII ended. Upon the family’s return to Canada, Agnes started her education at the Rimbey Elementary School and completed her schooling in Rimbey. Following high school, she was employed with Alpha Dairy in Calgary; returning to the Rimbey area to work at the Bluffton Creamery. It was during her years of working at the Bluffton Creamery that she met her lifelong soulmate, Clair Lundstrom, who farmed east of Hoadley. They were married on June 29, 1960. Agnes threw herself into farm life, working together with Clair and her in-laws to expand their cow/calf and mixed farming operation. In addition to farming, Agnes and her mother-in-law Greta Lundstrom grew a huge garden and preserved hundreds of canned vegetables and fruit every year. She prided herself on preparing meals for her family that were truly derived from “living off the land”. Agnes and Clair were blessed with their daughters, Candis and Tanya, who arrived in 1966 and 1968, respectively. During her time as a new mom, Agnes began partaking in events within the local farming community, especially at the Liberty Hall. Over the years, she became actively involved with the Liberty Hall Board, the Springdale Ladies Club, and the singing group, the Liberty Belles. Agnes loved the farming community, and she worked hard to contribute what she could to the community’s friendly and generous ways. As their daughters grew up, Agnes and Clair found time to add two more hobbies to their daily routine. During the summer months, they could be found on the “greens” at any one of the local golf courses; and during the winter months, Agnes was on the ice, curling. She became a curling enthusiast, with a competitive nature that helped their team land a position in the curling provincials one year. In 2004, with the completion of their child-raising years behind them and the arrival of their grandchildren, Agnes and Clair decided to leave the farm and retire to Rimbey. Agnes also loved living in town, as she enjoyed being able to surround herself with people and build a healthy social life. Everyone was always welcome at her kitchen table, as she served coffee and home-baked treats to family and friends several times a day. She also took great pleasure in hosting holiday events and preparing extravagant holiday meals. Agnes always made sure to add both the Danish, as well as the Swedish (Clair’s family) traditions to her holiday baked goodies. She also became the family’s official “hardtack” maker, which is a delicious Swedish oatmeal flat bread that everyone quickly devoured. Agnes loved her family and friends immensely, and leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and kindness. She will be forever remembered and deeply missed. Agnes is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 63 years, Clair; her daughters Candis (Richard) Edwards of Red Deer; and Tanya Lundstrom of Sylvan Lake; as well as four cherished grandchildren Jessa (Chris) Wilkinson; Kimberley (Dustin) Patapoff; Scott (Danika) Morse; and Carter Taylor; and three precious great-grandchildren Layne, Blake, and Ryder. She is also survived by her brother Kenny (Lucille) Straarup of Calgary; in addition to her close and dear friends, who she called her chosen sisters, Helen West of Edmonton; Helen (Carl) Coers of Rimbey; and Susan Grieshaber-Otto of Hoadley; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives; plus many additional friends. Agnes was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Anna Perry and Ellen McManus; and her brother Thomas. With respect for Agnes’ wishes, no formal funeral service will be held at this time. If desired, memorial donations in her memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Food Bank, c/o Family and Community Support Services, Box 404, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyfcss.com). • JACKSON

Suddenly and sadly, our beloved Jesse R. Jackson of Rimbey, Alberta was taken from us far too soon at the young age of 27 years. He was doing what he loved, just as the beautiful sun was setting for the evening on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Forever race the rain, Jesse. Ride the wind. Chase the sunset. Jesse was born in Wainwright, Alberta on December 2, 1995. At the age of ten years, he moved with his family to Rimbey where he completed his schooling. Jesse possessed an enormous passion for life that encompassed anything to do with bikes, trucks, heavy equipment, fire trucks, and fishing. Jesse enjoyed his occupation as a heavy equipment operator in the oilfield industry. He especially appreciated anything that was built out of yellow iron! As long as it was a hefty piece of extra large equipment, he was thrilled! Jesse was also a dedicated member of Ponoka County Regional Fire Services, volunteering for the Fire Department in the Rimbey area. He respected his fellow firefighters, and strived diligently to obtain his Fire and Rescue qualifications and licensing. Mostly, he was excited to finally be able to boast being allowed to drive the pumper truck – or anything else that was big and available that he could get his hands on! In Jesse’s free time, he looked forward to the opportunity to venture out for a day of fishing. It was being in the comfort of nature, with a fishing rod in his hand, that he was the happiest. Nor could a day end until Jesse witnessed or imagined the splendor of a magnificent sunset. His greatest love above all was for his family, especially his son Dawson who was the biggest and brightest sparkle that completely filled Jesse’s heart. While Jesse is riding with the angels, he will be greatly missed by those he has left behind: his parents Brian and Cathie; and his son, Dawson, who Jesse adored with unending love and attention; as well as his partner Kiera Davick; longtime best friend Travis Adzich; his brother Clinton (Cassandra) and their daughter Lucy; and his brother Cody. Jesse will also be greatly missed by his maternal grandparents Tim and Sara Herman; his paternal grandparents Harold Jackson and Dale Baldwin; in addition to several extended family members; his cherished fire department family; and many close and treasured friends. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Jesse’s Life will be held at the Co-operators AgRim Centre, 4905 – 48 Avenue, Rimbey on Friday, September 1, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., with Chris Chabot hosting. Sharing time together in an arena filled with dirt, while wearing jeans, a buckle, and a pair of old boots, is an honest tribute to the down-to-earth, kind, and generous man that Jesse was. If desired, memorial donations may be made in his memory directly to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, 800 College Plaza, 8215 – 112 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2C8 (www.stollerykids.com). It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Robert “Bert” Dixon Fraser of Bentley, Alberta. Bert passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at the age of 50 years. Bert was born in Bentley, Alberta on August 17, 1972, the youngest child of Ellen “Jean” Fraser (née Mulloy) and Gordon “Frank” Fraser. If you needed anything fixed, he was the person to go to. Bert was a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of guy, a millwright by trade, and a remarkable person who possessed a great sense of humour that could make anyone laugh. He graduated from the Bentley High School in 1990 as class president, and following graduation worked at the Bentley Ski Hill, Esso, and at Valley Steam Ltd. In 1999, Bert was blessed with his daughter Paige and they relocated to Blackfalds, Alberta. In 2003, he endeavoured upon his own pressure washing company, Wash Wizards, and operated this business for many years. Bert moved back to Bentley a few years ago and worked at Teamworks Fabricating Ltd. He enjoyed many other ventures in his lifetime, but his extensive knowledge of farming, animals, heavy-duty and electrical repairs, as well as his technical expertise in arcade machines kept him active. Bert also owned a unique Coca-Cola motorhome which he took great pleasure in keeping in top-notch shape. He always loved a good project to keep him busy. It was a rare occurrence if Bert didn’t know how to fix something; however, he would always find the answer. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Bert is survived by his loving daughter Paige and her son Lincoln; and three brothers Scott (Yvonne), Jack (Cheryl), and Lorne. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews Madisson (Rick) and their daughter Parker; Westin (Abreena) and their children Saige and Nash; Lee (Justine) and their son Nolan; Wyatt (Lindsay); Lucas; and McKenzie (Randy) and their daughter Revi; as well as several extended family members and many dear friends. • MILLAR

Gordon “Gord” Kennedy Millar of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, after a short battle with leukemia, on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Gord was born on October 8, 1934 at Foster’s Nursing Home in Olds; the third child of Charles E. and Doris (neé Botham) Millar. He spent his early years near Sundre until the Millar family moved to Banff in 1936. Gord attended elementary school in Banff and spent much of his time in the mountains skiing, horseback riding, and fishing. In 1947, the family relocated to Calgary where he finished his schooling and started working for Canadian Pacific Railways as a messenger between offices along the line in Calgary. Growing up around horses, in his late teens and early 20s Gord had the opportunity to work as a trail hand with his father, Chuck Millar, a well-known guide and outfitter in the Canadian Rockies. In the mid-50s, he returned to the mountains to begin working as a timekeeper for Parks Canada in Banff National Park at Lake Louise. When the Lake Louise office closed and moved to Banff, Gord moved to Banff as well and continued working until his retirement in 1991. Since childhood, Gord’s greatest love was cars! Before he retired he built his home at Gull Lake, Alberta, with the most important part being a garage big enough for his ’80 Trans Am, ’89 Firebird, ’81 El Camino, and many more over the years. At family gatherings the question was always, “I wonder what kind of car Uncle Gordie is driving these days?” Gord moved to Rimbey in the early 2000s, and yet again bought a home based on the size of the garage that came with it! He spent the last years of his life at the Valley View Manor in Rimbey where he met his partner, Sandy, who was a great companion until his death. Gord is survived by his son Tom Millar; his sisters Gertrude Wiechula of Calgary, and Gail (Sig) Seidel of Winnipeg, Manitoba; and his brother George (Betty) Millar of Nelson, B.C. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Paul, Wendy, George, Ken, David, Colin, Nola, Jeannie, and Christel; as well as several cousins and many friends. • ZELASEK

For those who wish to view the live-stream of Garry's Memorial Service, please visit the following link: https://teams.live.com/meet/9321961218299 With aching hearts and intense sadness we announce the passing of Garry William Zelasek of Morningside, Alberta. Garry passed away peacefully, in the loving arms of his wife Michelle, on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at the age of 56 years. Garry was born in Rimbey, Alberta on January 18, 1967, to Harvey and Sharon Zelasek, the eldest child and a brother to Greg and Michelle. Growing up, Garry and Greg were not only brothers, but were the best of friends. They spent time doing many things together: motorbiking, skidooing, fishing, hunting, and camping – just to mention a few. However, Garry always said the best times they had were when they went down to the river valley. Garry was a very competitive athlete and participated in many sports. He enjoyed an array of school sports, as well as golfing, slow pitch, and – of course – his passion for hockey! Garry played hockey all through his childhood, up to and including his time playing Junior B hockey for the Rimbey West Stars, and finishing in more recent years with the Senior Men’s League. He absolutely loved hockey; especially when cheering for his favourite team, the Edmonton Oilers, and when engaging in a fun rivalry with Greg, who is a Flames fan. For a couple of years, Garry was also an outrider on the chuckwagon racing circuit – racing for his chosen second family, the Mayans. Throughout his career, Garry was employed for various companies. He enjoyed his employment with the Rimbey Co-op, All Structures, Teak Oilfield, PCS, NAL, and lastly, for Tamarack. It did not matter what job Garry had, he always worked hard and was a great co-worker. He continuously said that he loved his job – and he really meant it! In 1990 Garry married his high school sweetheart Michelle Bushey, and shortly thereafter they were blessed with three boys Justin, Lance, and Nathan. He was very proud of his boys. Garry loved to tease them and make them laugh – and, oh boy, that laugh of his was contagious! Garry was the happiest when he was outside with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, playing with his granddaughters, or being competitive in any type of family game. In December of 2020, Garry was diagnosed with ALS. Even when he received this devastating news, he never let this horrific disease define who he was. Garry always had a smile on his face, a joke to tell, a poke to give, and a laugh beyond measure. He was the first person in Canada with ALS to volunteer for the Capture ALS Study – a study that is trying to find a cure by taking spinal fluid for research. Garry’s doctor told him that he was the pioneer for this project, and that his number would be, like, 000001! Garry just laughed! He never hesitated when they asked if he was interested in participating in a research study, he just responded with a “yes”! His thoughts were: “I might not find a cure for me, but maybe it could help someone else with a cure, or at least give them a longer life with a slower progression.” Garry was very selfless when it came to the ALS studies, and he was participating in as many as he could. Then he suffered a fall in 2022, and endured a brain bleed that needed to be operated on. After this unfortunate fall, Garry was no longer allowed to participate in the studies because they did not know if his progression was because of ALS, or due to complications of his fall. Garry was distressed that he could not continue with the research; however, even with all of the setbacks and his terminal diagnosis, he still maintained an optimistic view on life and never once did he say, “Why me?” Garry is survived by his ever-loving wife and best friend of almost 33 years, Michelle; and his sons Justin, Lance (Braelyn), and Nathan (Shelby); as well as five cherished granddaughters Scarlett, Harper, Sarah, Esmé, and Sophia – whom Garry loved beyond measure. Those little girls made him laugh so much, especially when they would rip off his slippers and tickle his feet! He is also survived by his mother Sharon (Johnny) Nobel; his brother Greg (Susan) Zelasek; and his sisters-in-law Melody (Bob) Hansen, and Myla (Brian) Hansen; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and many great friends. Garry was predeceased by his father Harvey; his sister Michelle; parents-in-law Wilfred and Amy Bushey; his sister-in-law Sharon Bushey; brother-in-law David Bushey; and his sister- and brother-in-law Winnie and Gene Norstrom. A public Memorial Service in Celebration of Garry’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Mark Schultz officiating. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Garry’s memory may be made directly to the ALS Society of Alberta, 7874 – 10 Street NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8W1 (www.alsab.ca). • DITTRICK

With deep sadness and unending love we announce the passing of Wayne Kenneth Dittrick of Rimbey, Alberta. Wayne passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the age of 71 years. Wayne was born on February 26, 1952, in St. Catharines, Ontario to Mac and Joan Dittrick. He was the eldest of four children: Wayne, David, Delena, and Robert. Wayne had an adventurous childhood growing up on the Niagara Escarpment. The family spent lots of time camping and fishing. He talked of occasions catching eels and snapping turtles. Wayne and his brother David had many good times together exploring wooded areas around their home. At the age of 22 years, Wayne joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He, kind of, informally met his future wife Joan during basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, by accidently kicking a soccer ball in her face! After basic training, Wayne was transferred to Borden, Ontario for his trades training. He went through Borden at the same time as Joan, as they were in the same trade. After graduating the Air Frame Technician course, Wayne did not get any of his posting preference requests of Ottawa, North Bay, or Trenton. Instead he got posted to Cold Lake, Alberta, which a month later is where Joan got posted to. Fate ensured they found each other again, they started dating, and – well, the rest is history! Wayne and Joan were married in November, 1975. They spent 14 years in Cold Lake where Wayne was involved in Scouting, fishing, bird hunting, camping, and boating. Afterward, Wayne and his family received a posting to Trenton. He was assigned the task of setting up the inside of 707s to please Brian Mulroney’s lovely wife Mila. It was not a pleasant task! The family then spent nine months in Borden before Wayne obtained his discharge and they moved back to Alberta, settling in Sherwood Park. Their final move was to Rimbey, where Wayne and Joan were active members of the Rimbey Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as the Rimbey Fish and Game Association. Wayne continued to enjoy camping and fishing until the last year before his passing. Wayne leaves behind his loving wife Joan; one son Justin (Leanne) Dittrick and their family Trinity, Tyler, Sam, and Hudson; and one daughter Shawna (Matthew) Wecker and their family Jesse, Layne, Rylan, and Kacey. He also leaves behind his mother Joan Dittrick of Thorold, Ontario; two brothers David (Donna), and Robert (Angie); and one sister Delena (Peter), and their families. Wayne was predeceased by his father Mac in 2020. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Wayne’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Al Lewis officiating. Wayne was laid to rest in the Glenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Sherwood Park at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in his memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and NWT, #306, 10430 – 61 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T6H 2J3 (www.alzheimer.ca).
