JARL

*SERVICE UPDATE*

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Raymond “Ray” Sidney Jarl of Rimbey, Alberta. Ray passed away, with family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Monday, June 26, 2023, at the age of 89 years.

Ray was born on October 11, 1933 to Roy and Nellie Jarl in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As a young man, he ventured onto a few different career paths before discovering his skills in the electrical trade as an electrician. He also worked for a time as an instrument technician while employed with Texaco and Esso. Ray met the love of his life Lorraine in 1952, and they were united in marriage on June 18, 1955 in Saskatoon. To this union, Ray and Lorraine were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was always very proud of his family.

Shortly after the family settled in Rimbey in the early 1970s, Ray became very involved in the community; a dedication towards helping others that spanned across several decades. He joined the Rimbey Lions Club in 1972, holding many club and district positions; including director, club secretary, and district Zone Chairman. Ray received several club awards over the years, as well as a District Governor’s Appreciation Award. He was recognized with a Lions Club International Life Membership in 2007, and continued to attend club meetings until just a few weeks ago. Ray also served for many years with several other organizations; including as a director with the Community Futures East Parkland Board, on the Health Facility Review Committee, and he was also instrumental in helping with the construction completion of the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.

Over a span of eighteen years, Ray enjoyed fulfilling several terms on Town Council; proudly serving for four of those years as Rimbey’s mayor. In 2017, he received national recognition as one of the recipients of the Senate of Canada Anniversary Medal, acknowledging his generosity, dedication, volunteerism, and hard work. Ray was a faithful Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, and a dedicated Edmonton Oilers enthusiast! He possessed a terrific sense of humour, loved to sit around the campfire while on camping adventures with his family, and he took the greatest pleasure in devouring any kind of ice cream treat!

Ray will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Lorraine; his son Gary (Sharon) Jarl and their son Ryan (Trisha); and his three daughters: Lori (Grant) Hillis and their children Leanne (Kevin), Shelley (Gavin), and Derek; Patti (Dave) Misner and their sons Blaine and Cory; and Cathy Jarl (Kevin) and their children Alyssa (Matt), Kyle, and Travis; as well as thirteen precious great-grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered by two sisters Joyce (Dennis) Ebell; and Erma (Barry) Johnsen; his sister-in-law Vivienne Ward; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other family members, and many close friends. Ray was predeceased by his parents Roy and Nellie; his brother Erv; and an infant brother Ralph.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Ray’s Life will be held at the Seniors Drop-in Centre, 5110 – 53 Avenue, Rimbey on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in the Columbarium at the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in Ray’s memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, c/o the Rimbey Hospital Legacy Committee, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0 (www.rimbeyhospitallegacycommittee.com).
